Chapter 7 - City Cleanup

After the giant zombie fell, the normal ones became more disorganized.

'It seems that the giant one was controlling the little ones. Now that it's gone, their overall intelligence has dropped.'

The zombie horde began spreading out more, unlike the previously focused attack.

Thankfully, this meant that we now could deal with them as we normally did.

An hour later, all the 1 million zombies in the vicinity were killed.

As crazy as it sounded, modern technology was really the MVP.

Whilst gathering up the corpses to burn them, somebody tapped my shoulder.

It was the previous technician I talked to, behind him were the group of non-police office workers who worked at the police headquarters.

"What's up?"

I asked them.

"Is it possible for us to go with your group?"

"Yeah, it's totally fine. But what made you want to do so?"

"I asked one of your men and he said that the north was empty from zombies. Is it true?"

I merely nodded to answer him.

"Great, so can we go with you?"

I did not immediately answered but pretended to think of it.

"Please!! We'll even work under you!"

Hearing this, I inwardly smiled.

"Fine, but you'll have to do one thing."

"What is it? We'll do anything as long as it's within our capabilities."

"Take all the weapons and robots from the headquarters, we'll need all of them to guard the northern side."

"Deal!!!"

The technician didn't even consider discussing the deal with his fellow co-workers and just one-sidedly accepted it.

****

After the deal was made, we returned to the northern barricades with a full supply of armored vehicles, all sorts of guns, and a huge amount of robots.

Now that the robots could guard the barricades, I could now take most of our men to eradicate the zombies.

For the next 7 days, me and around 700 people left the barricades in order to systematically eradicate the zombies.

Along the way, we encountered more ordinary civilians who hid inside their homes.

Then after 2 months of a back and forth effort to save all the uninfected civilians, we began cleaning up all the corpses.

By this point, I was deemed the de facto leader of our faction, or rather almost the entire city.

We still had to make sure, so we spent another 2 months carefully inspecting each house, area, and building, in order to kill any hidden zombies.

Then, after saving some city officials who were surprisingly still alive, we found out that there was an entire underground facility beneath the city.

When I asked how large it was, they didn't know.

All they knew was the fact there were multiple entrances to the facility spread throughout the city.

After hearing about this, I quickly spent a brief month to clean up all the zombie corpses and gathered 500 people to go down to the facility.

****

'What the hell?'

The facility was teeming with zombies, some of them have mutated into giant zombies and other strange forms.

Luckily, since we were all quite experienced, we dealt with them quickly.

'Phew, the zombies here are a lot less than some of the hordes we faced, but the limited space makes it seem as if they're endless.'

We spent 3 days cleaning up the facility.

And since it was a wide facility with multiple entrances withen the city, we had to send more people to clean up those areas as well.

'I think I know the source of those parasites.'

In one of the labs inside the facility, there were numerous terrariums made of bulletproof glass.

Inside those terrariums were the parasites that made people zombies.

"So it's because of these that we had to deal with all that trouble??"

I aimed my gun to shoot at the terrariums, and the people around me did the same.

We were all disgusted by these creatures.

"WAIT!!!! DON'T KILL THEM!!!!"

A desperate woman's voice came from a wall-mounted speaker in the corner of the room.

I glanced around the room and noticed that there was a CCTV camera looking straight at us.

'She must be one of this facility's survivors.'

"Why should we not kill them?"

I asked while readying to shoot them.

"It's for the sake of our research! So please don't kill them!"

"Your research? These things have killed half of the city's entire population and you're telling us that we should let them be?"

"Look.... it wasn't our fault, okay?? There was a security breach and the perpetrator released a bunch of them for some unknown reason. Please believe us!"

The woman pleaded with all her might.

"Even if that was what happened, it's still dangerous to keep these things alive."

"No, please not yet! We're so close to discovering a cure to aging. Just give us a few more years and we'll get the chance to achieve immortality!!"

"What the hell are you talking about? A few more years? How are you even going to do it?"

I began to sense that we weren't speakimg in the same wavelength.

"W-what do you mean? We can still replenish our staff and advance our research. I feel really bad that half of the city was killed, but if we finish our research, 12 billion of us humans can't die of old age anymore! We'll be forever young!"

I furrowed my eyebrows and then asked her bluntly.

"Look here lady, do you not know what happened outside?"

"Didn't the escaped specimens infect half of the city population?"

"Yes, but before that all happened, don't you know what happened?"

"No, we were too focused on research, so the last time we were outside was a month ago. No way, did World War 3 happen???"

The woman's tone started to become shaky.

"No, I think you've been seeing too many conspiracy theories. But something worse did happen."

"...."

The woman was silent as if thinking about something.

Then, she started speaking again.

"Does.... does it have something to do with giant squid aliens?"

"Wait wait wait wait, how do you know about that?"

'Don't tell me they're also the ones responsible for it?'

The plot thiccens.
