Blocking Out The Calls Of Help

Today was a bright day as usual despite the snowstorm that attacked North-East outskirts on the day a vampire was found in the market.

Prior to that incident, Kiki and Nana were in their humble abode in the Homeless Shelter.

Kiki made sure Nana was kept warm and fuzzy so she won't start having flu which could deteriorate her health drastically.

Now they were seated on their couch with a blanket shielding them from the cold and a mug of hot chocolate to warm their insides as they watched the delicate snowflakes appear from an unknown destination and hit the ground with a subtle brush.

The room was in complete silence and the only noise that disrupted the tranquility was the deep snores from the old man on the cot.

After the doctor unhypnotized him, he has been sleeping like a log and all efforts to wake him up had been effectively put to vain.

Nana eventually gave up on the old man and she left him to sleep in peace and kept her thoughts which streamed from chastising her granddaughter for her foolish naive self and to wanting the old man to just pass on so she could finally have her peace of mind back, all in her head.

"Snow never fell at South-Mairak" Nana said with a hint of nostalgia as her grey eyes shined under the dim light.

"I know right? It was always so warm there" Kiki smiled and took a sip from her mug.

"Yeah, your grandfather always loved the weather there"

"He loved it so much that he took us on picnics almost every week" Kiki chuckled and her eyes sparkled as she thought of her grandfather.

"He just used that as an excuse to see you smile. He loved you so much,"Nana said with a wistful smile.

Kiki frowned. She wasn't used to seeing her Nana so dull and mundane, her grandmother was always a breath of fresh air and she never failed to laugh every minute of the day.

"Of course he did, but I don't think I can compare to his dearest beloved, Nana of all" Kiki said in a chirpy voice, and her plan to make Nana smile worked.

"Duh, Of course, He only had eyes for me," Nana said and flipped her hair for the effect.

They both laughed out loud and Kiki was relieved to have her vivacious grandmother back.

"Oh, my darling Kiki" Nana stroked Kiki's hair with affection.

"Nana" Kiki said as a warning because she knew where this conversation was leading to.

"My sweetheart, I'm your grandmother and I have raised you to be this beautiful and courageous young vampire but your life is not confined to me. You have a bright future ahead of you, don't trap yourself within these four walls" Nana tilted her head and looked at her granddaughter with pleading eyes.

"My future is nothing without you. I can't do anything without you so enough with the advice for me to leave you and pursue my dreams" Kiki explained.

"One day or another, I won't be with you anymore. You need to learn to be independent and fight for that fire inside your heart"

"You're not going anywhere, Madam. I'm always going to be by your side and ensure you don't fall. We have the life span of a hundred centuries, Why do you want to give up at just seven?" Kiki scolded.

"You need to do something about your life" Nana insisted and Kiki sighed in frustration.

"My life is perfect. With you safe and healthy, I want nothing more" Kiki assured.

"I have the most stubborn granddaughter in the world," Nana hit Kiki's head but her smile wasn't hidden.

"Oh please, it's not easy to keep up the legacy of the family" Kiki shrugged and Nana shook her head at her silliness.

"But-"

"Oh, I just remembered. We need to go to market, the spices we have won't be enough for this week" Kiki quickly changed the subject and got up from the couch.

Nana was about to say more but decided to drop the topic for another day.

"Let's go together," Nana said and got up.

"What? No, it's just a few things. You can stay"

"I need to stretch my old limbs before I start to get cramps on my butt too" Nana threw her knitted sweater over her body and got ready to leave with Kiki.

"Who on earth gets cramps on their butt?" Kiki rolled her eyes at her grandmother's absurd excuse to accompany her to the market.

"Well, I may be the first to get one, who knows?" Nana chided and Kiki laughed out loud at her silliness.

"Will the old man be fine on his own?" Kiki asked.

"The market is just right down the corner, we won't even spend close to an hour there. He'll be fine" Nana asserted and they locked the door after stepping out.

"My God, the weather is freezing" Nana screeched as they walked down to the market.

Upon getting to the market, Kiki was quick to get the items she needed without a hitch.

Nana expertly bickered with the sellers to reduce the price for them and the sellers being familiar with Nana's sharp mouth, they obliged without a fight.

They were about leaving when they heard an uproar coming from the crowd and someone screamed,

"It's a vampire!!"

Nana and Kiki quickly put their guards up as their eyes roamed through the crowd, searching for the vampire.

Her red hair wrapped in a ponytail wasn't difficult to find and they were surprised by the bravery and unwavering tone she used to answer the old man.

When she was held down by the women and even slapped by one, Kiki reached forward but was instantly held back by Nana.

"What do you want to do?" Nana whispered as she watched out in fear.

"I need to help her"

"Then what? You get swiped into the mess and we all die. They are too much, you can't fight them all so stay put until we find the safest opportunity to escape" Nana held Kiki with a stern look.

Her intense, engulfing wail rang out as the blade roughly stabbed her stomach.

Kiki clenched her fist as she could do nothing but stand and watch her fellow vampire being vandalized by the werewolves.

The harsh guilt reached out and gripped her heart so tight that for a moment, she was unable to breathe.

Then she turned around, never looked back and blocked out the calls of help coming from the vampire, and stored it in a dark corner in her head.

A place where she never ventured to unless the darkness succumbed.
