Chapter 3: Broadway

Near the rocking chair, there is a coffee table.

From inside the office, a voice comes, "come in. "

After hearing that, Eren enters the room. He first surveys the room. Next, his eye stayed on the poster of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn for flew second.

He watches the poster with concentration. So he raises both of his eyebrows.

While Queal watches all this with an amused smile and slips coffee. He rises right eyebrow and asked, "Did you find something interesting?

Queal put down his cup and said, "Good, my boy. You made the old man proud. "

It seems Eren doesn't want to talk about it, so he asked "You called me sir? "

" *ahem* I want to adopt your drama script in our next theatre play."

"Tomorrow, bring your agent. "

"I don't have one."

"You didn't hire an agent?"

"Again, remember to hire an agent. They are the ones who will represent you. They help negotiate your pay, contract, and working conditions. Without making an enemy with your possible work partner, may not now but might in the future, you understand?"

"yes."

"Money. "

"..... Selling the Right to perform of your play."

"oh, *ahem * $250 per performance plus 12% profit."

"you remember that our theatre is 500 seated? Not 5000 seated? And you are a novice playwright? "

*ahem* "$150 and 8%".

"$60 and 1%"

"$110 and 4% that's my last offer."

"Ok deal, but I want to work as An Assistant Director."

Eren just smiles and walks out.

Eren knows that selling the rights to perform a play is like tenants paying rent to a landlord. A playwright allows others to use his play for royalties from their production in theatres.

A playwright can decide how much to charge for royalties, but the standard is anything from $50 to $250 per performance, with the playwrights requesting 8% to 12% of the total earnings of a production.

Two factors determine the price that the playwright decides on.

The size of the theatre.

Your own experience as a playwright.

If the theatre has 5,000 seats. You can claim more of the royalties as they will earn more from ticket sales. Smaller theatres with 500 seats or fewer will bring in less profit, meaning lower royalty checks.

In terms of experience, a professional playwright who has had their plays produced several times and knows the industry well can charge a lot more for their scripts.

They've built up a rapport with producers, and thus their work won't be a financial risk.

A novice playwright is a financial risk. If their play doesn't land with audiences, nobody profits off of the production, least of all the playwright.

You can sell a play script for between $60 to $1000. The exact amount depends on the experience level of the playwright.

What they value in their work, and the size of the theatre.

While you might not make much money for your scripts, the good news is that you can buy dinner with your sale.

So for Eren to sell the right to perform at $110 per performance and 4% of profit, it's quite good!!

Now Eren just needs to hire an agent. But that's for another time. Now he just wants to go home and play with Elia, if she is not sleeping and have a good night's sleep.

today was a fatiguing day but a delightful day.

It's been two weeks since the last existing days, Eren preparing for the play scripts.

He has already revised play scripts, over 3 times. But old Queal always says. 'Something is missing.'

It may be because in the play most of the characters are Men or kids.

And our Old Queal is a man with high standards. He wants full of character.

...No, ...maybe he just wants to warm to eyes with angles. Not with men.

Anyway, after Eren adds a few more characters in the play, with some interesting backgrounds.

Queal accepts it.

But then he asked to give that character a happy ending.

That character is a woman, a young single mother.

Eren describes the character well. Her body, her face, her size. How she behaves, how she walks, how she talks, how she laughs.

And you bet, old bat asked him to draw a portrait of the young lady.

He believed he found an accurate description of the angel.

Eren has already been in contact with the creative team.

Since he working as An Assistant Director. It allows him to learn about the production process and the work of the overall director. This means after a while of assisting a director, he could work towards becoming the Director.

Of course, it's for the theatre director. Not for the film director.

He would attend the run rehearsals. Assist the Director, including taking notes and discussing the process. Sometimes rehearse scenes if an actor is absent.

After every rehearsal, he would attend production meetings.

When he returned home, he would already be tired.

With all hardness, good things come to his life. Now that, he is no longer a box office clerk. And rehearsals were done in the daytime. His evening is quite free.

In the evening he would revise for the SAT exam. while cooking dinner for the princess. Or play a doll game with her.

Yes, it's childish, but it can put a beautiful smile on her face. He also regrets that for the past 3 months he didn't take good care of her, due to him in the evening shift.

But now Eren promises himself, he will correct all his wrongs.

Speaking of Elia, she started going to school.
