The Autopsy

Orochimaru stared hatefully at Saikuru, his former playful and amused demeanor replaced with an angered one.

Orochimaru loathed the fact that his little experiment, his plaything, was capable of such insubordination.

Regardless of that though, Orochimaru's mood rapidly returned to its former state, as the snake quickly got over the humiliation.

So what if the bandit spit in his face? Even if for merely a moment, He succeeded in his goal of implanting nature transformation kekkei genkai into one who does not normally have it.

Just thinking about it made him giddy. What other kekkei genkai could he infuse artificially into test subjects. Perhaps maybe even Hashirama's wood style?

Perhaps the transplant of kekkei genkai was not limited to just nature transformations though. Perhaps he could even find a way to transplant other styles of kekkei genkai. Potentially visual in nature..

With a satisfied smile on his face, Orochimaru reviewed his detailed notes of the operation, also being sure to add to it about what the man's capabilities with the scorch style were in the mere second he had that power to call his.

Rumour has it that Sungakure has a kunoichi who was a master of the scorch release who was going to fight in the coming war.

However, Orochimaru's research for this experiment was not done yet.

He needed to know specifically how the patient died and why. All in order to improve the experiment. To further his goal of learning every single jutsu.

Even those which limited him by his very blood.

With his goal in mind, Orochimaru turned to his assistant, who had a cold look in his eye.

Orochimaru: "You know what I am going to ask of you, don't you Mizuki"

Mizuki: "Yes Sensei, Although I have only been trained as a field medic, I don't know the first thing about conducting an autopsy"

Orochimaru: "Fair enough, than you will be my assistant for this time so that you can learn, it is an important skill to learn as my assistant"

Mizuki: "Yes Sensei"

Hearing his acknowledgement, Orochimaru walked towards the desk in the corner of the room before pulling out a drawer, revealing a set of specialized tools.

A set of metal instruments, several which Mizuki was not familiar with, although he could see a pair of scissors and what appeared to be the autopsy equivalent of tweezers.

(A/N: Oh boy, I am even more clueless on autopsies than I am on surgeries, so this is not going to be realistic at all).

Although arguably a horrible human being, Mizuki had to admit that Orochimaru was an incredible teacher.

Whilst most senseis were effective, very few were as knowledgeable on such a wide variety of topics as Orochimaru.

Forget allowing for things such as learning forbidden jutsu, or anything remotely morally grey.

With Orochimaru, so long as the idea could get you stronger, he would basically give you free reign over your own training.

Not to mention the fact that he was able to experiment with several jutsu that the rest of the world didn't even know existed, and even experiment with kekkei genkai.

Orochimaru: "Alright, the first thing I want you to do is to create an incision across the collar and than another one down the chest, try to form a Y shape"

Mizuki looked at Saikuru's corpse, which was still slightly warm to the touch from his residual body heat and could only clench his teeth as he performed the action requested of him.

Although he found the actions themselves immoral, Mizuki refused to waste an opportunity to learn such a skill and so, he put his personal distaste aside and listened to his sensei intently.

Mizuki created a curved slash that followed the corpse's collar, being just below it, following Orochimaru's instructions to a tee. As he slipped his knife into the corpse, Mizuki could only focus on the task at hand, trying to forget about how the man whose body he was desecrating had taught him a life lesson not five minutes prior.

Mizuki could feel the scalpel as it slipped through Saikuru's skin and pierced his muscles, like a hot knife through butter.

Although, the feeling that gave Mizuki the greatest discomfort, was that of the still warm blood as it occasionally brushed against his gloves, which did nothing to prevent the feeling.

It served as a constant reminder to Mizuki that he had just killed a man.

And as much as he loved to pretend that he was unaffected by the suffering of others, the truth was that being raised on earth, in an environment where he was raised to believe the complete opposite, he simply couldn't remain cold and stoic as he took a life.

Mizuki: {What the fuck have I done?}

Mizuki: {What would my family think of me back home?}

Mizuki: {Am I a Monster?}

Although, as he was having these thoughts, Mizuki also remembered why he made the resolution to be cold towards those people in the first place.

He knew that in the future several of his friends would die, suffer, and quite a few would do both.

Although he did not show it, Mizuki was desperately trying to contain his anxiety.

Although, strangely, similar to storm clouds sweeping overhead only to later reveal a blue sky, Mizuki's anxiety passed as he felt a sense of peace overcome him.

Mizuki: {I may have no clue what the answer is right now, but that would make my reincarnation kind of boring wouldn't it. Life is only interesting because we can improve after all.}

And with that, Mizuki continued to follow his sensei's instructions, the next incision he performed was one in which he slashed down the middle of Saikuru's chest.

Orochimaru nodded in acceptance at his assistants movements, although he had never done an autopsy before, he was still doing things at an acceptable level, and if he were to do this more often, then he would be able to become a master at the craft.

Mizuki then continued with the autopsy alongside Orochimaru's instructions, expertly creating incisions in the chest cavity and using his scalpel to maneuver around organs which he would then extract and hand to Orochimaru for testing with deadly efficiency.

After roughly thirty minutes passed, Mizuki stared over Saikuru's corpse with a look that mixed several emotions.

Sadness, Pity, Releaf, Fear and even Pride?

Mizuki shivered as he realized the last one.

Regardless of the morbidness and moral depravity of the scene, Mizuki could not help but be proud at what he had accomplished in the autopsy, a true work of delicate precision and incredible chakra control on his part.

The chest cavity was opened completely, with all of the organs being completely gone, alongside portions of his ribs that were removed in order to access them.

After the Autopsy, They had concluded that Saikuru had died of a heart attack which was caused by a mixture of overexerting his chakra, insanely high stress that was sustained over the course of several hours and the rejection of the foreign DNA.

Although, after determining the cause of death, the autopsy continued, this time on Saikuru's arm.

After all, the DNA of a scorch style user was still a resource, regardless of where it had been, it wasn't like they were going to waste it or anything.

Mizuki replicated a version of what he had accomplished previously during the surgery, delicately cutting through flesh to reach the bone in Saikuru's upper arm.

Although notably, this time it was much easier compared to the last.

Most notably due to the fact that he had more experience with the procedure now, and the fact that his patient was not flailing around, screaming and begging for his life.

In another twenty minutes, Mizuki was able to cut through connective tissue, skin and muscle to reach the bone which had been implanted.

Being an experienced medic, Mizuki could effortlessly see where the foreign DNA started and where Saikuru's ended.

He used the chakra scalpel technique to effortlessly hack through the bone, thankfully without a chisel and hammer this time.

Mizuki removed the bone sample and placed it on the table next to him before turning to his sensei.

Mizuki: "Is anything else required of me?"

With his classic snake like grin, that did not reveal a single emotion of his behind the mask, Orochimaru replied.

Orochimaru: "Just One More Thing"

Orochimaru: "Follow Me"

He wrapped the bone in a damp cloth before turning around and walking out of the door, seemingly not caring as to whether ot not Mizuki was following him.

Naturally, Mizuki did so.

Only being able to shoot one last pitying look towards the corpse before turning around and chasing after his sensei.

Thankfully for Mizuki, the walk to their next destination did not require nearly as much walking as it took to get to the Operating Room. Only About Five Minutes.

What Mizuki saw in that room could only be described as exactly the type of scene one would expect from Orochimaru.

The large, open room was filled with several cylinders of glass that stretched from floor to ceiling that lined the room in rows and rows across the entire area.

These tubes were filled with a neon green liquid that offered the only source of light in the room, although this was clearly not their intended purpose.

Rather, their intended purpose was to keep what was inside of them preserved.

Each of the test tubes had a different body parts, mainly bones inside them, Bones that most definitely belonged to assorted kekkei genkai users.

There was even the occasional whole corpse that was just remaining neutrally buoyant inside the tank.

However, the most disturbing thing about the scene was that the fact that several different test tubes were filled with the exact same thing.

It appeared as if somebody had copy pasted a series of objects dozens of times and placed them all in that lab.

Although he believed he had the gist of what was going on, Mizuki looked towards his sensei for clarification, as he knew that they would not be in this room for no reason.

Orochimaru: "Tell me Mizuki, what do you know about cloning?"

Behold the long awaited chapter!

There will be a more frequent release schedule in the coming weeks.

So, if you haven't been able to tell yet, Mizuki's character arc over this volume and the next will be about finding a compromise in his morals between those of earth and those of the ninja world. I mainly decided upon implementing this character arc in particular as I felt it would be an interesting direction to explore that I haven't really seen that many fanfics do.
