The next few days at the Academy passed in a blur. Rayne's growing reputation as a formidable student had not gone unnoticed by the teachers or his peers. While Naruto continued to pester him about their last exercise, Sasuke had become more distant, though the intensity of his stares had not diminished. Rayne could feel the rivalry between them brewing, like a storm on the horizon.
Rayne's Copy Talent had grown sharper, and with it came an ever-deepening connection to the chakra he copied. The simplest techniques—transformations, fireball jutsu, and chakra control—were now second nature. Yet, despite this, Rayne felt an unease within him. There was more to his power than he understood, and it frightened him.
That evening, Iruka-sensei had called Rayne, Sasuke, and Naruto to the front of the class after a sparring session.
"You three have shown great potential as a team," Iruka said, his tone encouraging. "So today, I have a special mission for you. Outside the village, near the forest, there's been some unusual activity. Several villagers reported strange movements, and while we don't suspect anything too dangerous, the Academy has been asked to investigate. You three will take the lead."
Rayne blinked in surprise. "An actual mission?"
Iruka smiled. "Don't worry, it's low-risk. Just scout the area and report back anything unusual."
Sasuke stood to the side, his arms crossed. "This is a waste of time," he muttered, clearly unimpressed. Rayne said nothing, though he shared some of Sasuke's skepticism. However, a mission was a mission, and it would give him a chance to learn more about the world beyond the village.
Naruto, on the other hand, was ecstatic. "Yes! A real mission! This is gonna be awesome!"
A few hours later, the three of them stood at the edge of the village, looking out at the darkening forest ahead. The moon was rising, casting long shadows through the trees, making the forest seem even more ominous.
"Stick to the plan," Rayne reminded them as they ventured into the woods. "We scout the area, keep quiet, and report back."
Naruto nodded eagerly, his energy barely contained. Sasuke remained silent, his eyes scanning the surroundings with sharp focus.
They moved deeper into the forest, the sounds of rustling leaves and distant animal cries filling the air. Rayne's senses were on high alert, his Copy Talent already beginning to pick up the subtle shifts in the environment. He felt something strange—an unsettling presence, though it was faint.
"Do you feel that?" Rayne whispered, his eyes narrowing. "We're not alone."
Sasuke nodded slightly. "Yeah. Someone's here."
Naruto, uncharacteristically quiet, gave a slow nod as well. "I don't see anything, though."
They moved cautiously through the dense foliage, their steps measured. Rayne kept his chakra steady, not wanting to give away their position, but he could sense it—a flicker of movement, the rustle of leaves that wasn't caused by the wind.
Suddenly, a shadow darted between the trees ahead, so fast that Rayne almost missed it. He signaled for the others to stop.
"Did you see that?" Rayne whispered, his voice tense. Sasuke's eyes narrowed, and Naruto looked confused.
"I saw something," Sasuke replied, his voice low. "Fast, but not fast enough."
Without warning, the shadow moved again—this time closer. Rayne's Copy Talent reacted on instinct, and his chakra surged as he readied himself. He couldn't see their enemy, but his body was already analyzing the movements, preparing to counter.
The figure stepped into the moonlight. A man, draped in dark clothes with a mask covering half his face, stood before them. His eyes glinted with malice.
"Academy students, huh?" the man said with a sneer. "Looks like I've found some easy targets."
Rayne's heart raced. This wasn't some harmless mission. This was a real threat.
Sasuke was the first to act. Without hesitation, he formed hand seals, unleashing a fireball jutsu directly at the masked man. The flames roared toward the figure, but in a flash, he dodged, disappearing into the trees.
"Damn it," Sasuke muttered, scanning the area. "He's fast."
Rayne's Copy Talent locked onto the man's movements. He was skilled, but Rayne could feel his pattern—his rhythm. There was a window, a moment where the man's speed faltered.
"Naruto, Sasuke, wait for my signal," Rayne whispered.
The masked man appeared again, launching a barrage of kunai toward them. Rayne dodged with ease, his body moving instinctively. He copied the man's attack pattern, analyzing the flow of his movements.
Rayne's mind raced. I can see it. His weakness.
"Now!" Rayne shouted, launching himself toward the masked man. Sasuke followed suit, and Naruto, always quick to jump in, charged ahead, his hands forming seals.
The masked man's eyes widened in surprise as Rayne's hand intercepted his next attack, deflecting it with precise accuracy. In that moment, Rayne's Copy Talent kicked into overdrive. He mimicked the man's speed, his reflexes, even the rhythm of his strikes.
The man swung a kunai at Rayne, but Rayne was faster. He twisted out of the way, his fingers grazing the man's arm. The moment they made contact, Rayne's Copy Talent surged, absorbing the man's chakra flow.
"Got you," Rayne whispered, and with a burst of energy, he knocked the man off balance.
Sasuke was quick to follow up, delivering a well-placed kick that sent the masked man crashing into the ground. Naruto cheered as he prepared to launch another attack, but Rayne stopped him.
"Wait. He's done," Rayne said, breathing heavily.
The man groaned, trying to stand, but Sasuke placed his foot on the man's chest, keeping him down.
"You underestimated us," Sasuke said coldly.
As they secured the man and prepared to return to the village, Rayne couldn't shake the feeling of unease. This wasn't an ordinary mission, and the man they had captured wasn't just some bandit. Who sent him?
The answers would come later, but for now, Rayne knew one thing: his Copy Talent was evolving, and with each new challenge, the line between control and chaos grew thinner.
