Chapter 21: "Can i be cured?"

"Come on Aria, I'm gonna be late for my shift."

"I'm putting on my shoes. Jeez!"

"Good evening, what would you like to order?"

"I'll have the choco lava please."

"Will that be all?"

"Yes thank you."

I politely nod and walk away

"My battery died!" Aria nags

"I have thirty minutes left then we can go home."

Aria just rolls her eyes

"You want me to get you something?"

"A chocolate croissant." She states rudely

I nod and walk to the kitchen to get my sister a chocolate croissant. As i walk back to give her the chocolate croissant, my body weakens and i fall. The glass of the plate shattering as it hits the ground. My body starts to shake and jerk.

"Elle!"

Is last thing i hear as my vision starts to blur and my hearing starts to fail me.

I open my eyes. Its so bright. Without moving my body I look around. I see enough to know that im in a hospital. I hear beeping. I'm tangled in pipes. I start to panic. All of a sudden a voice talks over me.

"Miss Davis, im Daniel Jefferson. Im a nurse surgeon." The voice says

I'm too weak to talk so i nod slowly

"Lets see what's going on with you. Elle im gonna shine this light into your eyes." He says before shining what looks like a small torch into my eyes.

"What happened?" He asks

"I don't know. My whole body just started jerking."

"Have you been having headaches?"

I nod.

"For how long?"

"Two. Two weeks." I say

"Things aren't looking good Elle."

"What do you mean?" I ask confused

"You had a seizure. We ran some tests while you were asleep. There's something in your head called a tumour called glioblastoma."

He hands me a tab, on the screen i see a picture of my brain. I see how the tumor has spread all over.

"Can i be cured?" I ask giving the tab back

"I'm sorry. Elle. It has spread so much."

"Radiotherapy?"

He shakes his head

I fight back the tears and nod

"Can i see my sister please?"

He nods and walks out.

After a short while Aria walks in then stops. Tears running down her cheeks as she looks at me.

"Oh come on! I don't look that bad!" I say giving her a smile

She runs to me and lays besides me. Crying even more.

I comfort her by rubbing her back

"Please tell me you're gonna be okay." She asks through sobs

"Aria. I don't wanna lie to you."

"What do you mean?" She asks sitting up and looking at me straight in the face.

"Im sick Aria. I have brain cancer." I say

Her face turns pale

"But you'll take medicine and get better right?" She asks sounding a bit hopeful.

I shake my head

"No Aria. It's too late." I say as a tear runs down my cheek.

"No! I can't lose you too Elle."

"Ill always be with you Elle. In here." I say placing my hand over her heart.

Later that night i got discharged. I had to go home to look after Aria. Daniel said that there's no accurate answer for how long I'd still live. I have to just take it day by day being aware that each one might be my last. No treatment in the world could cure me. The tumour had spread really fast. I've lost so much weight and i didn't even realize. All those headaches were symptoms, Every time i lost my balance, Everytime my vision blurred, I didn't even know that i was slowly dying everyday.

Ma is still unconscious in hospital. I lost my job and I'm too weak to go to school.

Tuesday

"Are you excited to spend your day with Xavier today?" I ask buckling my seatbelt up

"Can't i just spend the day with you?" Aria asks

"No way! You have been waiting for this day for so long. How about tomorrow after school?"

"What if you don't wake up tomorrow?!"

I don't say anything and start the car.

"I'll pick you up later." I tell Aria as we stop infront of Xavier's house.

"Im sorry Elle."

I nod and give her a smile

She returns the smile and gets out.

I drive until i reach the forests. Once the car is parked, i jump out and make my way to the secret spot. As i walk i get flashbacks on the first time Zach brought me here. I smile. I walk to the edge of the cliff, taking the beautiful scenery in as if it's the first time seeing it. I remember all the times i spent here with Zach. When we opened up to one another. When we watched the sunrise. Im gonna miss it.

I hear footsteps coming from behind me. Zach. A smile crosses my face.

The footsteps get closer and then two hands are covering my eyes

"Guess who?" Zach asks cheerfully

"Hmm let me guess." I say pretending to think

Zach chuckles

"Perhaps some handsome guy with beautiful hazel eyes and dark brown hair." I say

"That's me baby!" Zach exclaims taking his hands away from my eyes and turning me around so that I'm facing him.

I giggle.

Zach looks at me with a sad expression on his face.

"What happened?" He asks referring to the scratches on my face

"A little accident at the cafe."

"How? Did someone hurt you?"

"No. I was clumsy and fell."

Zach just nods.

"Next time you get hurt, i need you tell me okay?" He talks in a serious tone

"Okay."

"I don't want you getting hurt. The thought of losing you is unbearable."

"You won't lose me."

He stays silent for a while then talks again

"Promise me you'll never leave?" He asks

Not trusting my voice, i nod. It would break him if I told him. I can't tell him... not yet.

"Promise?" He asks again

"I promise." I say

I lie to him.

Zach smiles and kisses me on the forehead.
