Azriel ran as fast as he could, his heart racing. The sky was filled with meteorites—fiery rocks falling from above. The bright light from the meteors made everything look both amazing and scary.
He breathed heavily, trying to get back to the base quickly. The high wall that surrounded their safe place was just ahead, but it seemed to be getting farther away with every step.
Suddenly, Azriel felt a shiver down his spine. He glanced back and saw a meteorite coming straight at him. Panicking, he rolled to the side just in time. The meteorite crashed into the wall with a huge bang, sending dust and debris everywhere. He covered his head and waited for the shaking to stop.
When the dust cleared, Azriel saw the worst news: the small hole he used to sneak in and out of the wall was now blocked by debris. Cursing under his breath, he looked up and saw the electric fence on top of the wall. Climbing over it was too dangerous.
