Chapter 40 : Come Back

*Amaya*

I was cradled under a bed of velvety soft moss. It smelled like rain on big oak leaves. The air had an unnatural crispness that I could feel pricking my skin.

My wrists and ankles no longer burned. After I broke my leg, even after it healed, a slight twinge lingered that was barely painful but just enough to remind me that my leg wasn’t the same. But as I lay on the moss, my leg felt amazing, better than it ever had before the break. I felt nothing remaining of Caine’s mark.

I slowly opened my eyes, mentally preparing myself for the sting of them adjusting to the sunlight but it never happened. The sun was shining but instead of bright yellow light, it omitted a soft gray glow.

I sat up and crossed my legs under me. I closed my eyes as I inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled. The air tasted different, I couldn’t completely understand why or how but I knew it wasn’t the same. It tasted the way drinking ice-cold water tasted, refreshing.
