Chapter 41 : Witches and Elves

I settled in beside my mother. Her dress was a soft plush velvet in a deep forest green. She almost blended into the moss that we were sitting on. She began to play with my hair, braiding it into small intricate braids.

“Are you comfortable?” she asked as I leaned onto her. I nodded my head yes and she kissed my forehead. “The Elves lived in Shadowguard for many an age before the shifters crept from the south. If you need to know anything, my love it’s that shifters are animals more than they are human.”

“But elves are neither,” I said to counter her offensive comment. I didn’t want to deal with any snobbery or pride. It felt pointless and stupid, we were on the verge of war. Caine reveled in his pride and sense of superiority as did my father.

The witches segregated men causing witches like my mother to choose between their son or returning to Bludleach. It was all so stupid. Shifters, witches, elves - what really was the difference?
