Chapter 60 Marriage Talk

May was once again seated in her office and Gwendolyn was sitting in front of her.

Both stayed silent waiting for the other to start the conversation.

As the minutes passed May continued to observe the blond in front of her, she looked dishevelled like she had not showered or taken care of her appearance for a long time but even with all that May had to admit that Gwendolyn was really good-looking and it was pleasant to stare at her but they had to get down to business.

So May ended up starting the conversation.

"So you got everything right ?" May asked while wearing a small smirk.

Gwendolyn was slightly pleased that Pope Paker started the conversation as in her mind that meant she needed Gwendolyn more than Gwendolyn needed her.

But when Gwendolyn saw the small smirk that Pope Paker was giving her, her mood immediately soured.

But she still kept her cool.

"Of course why would I be here if I didn't have everything you wrote on that stupid paper" Gwendolyn answered with her signature emotionless voice and her expressionless face.

"Good, Well guess now's the time for the talk" May stopped the joking mood and turned serious in an instant.

Gwendolyn was surprised by the quick change of demeanor but she did not show it.

"What Talk?"

"..." May did not say anything she just looked at Gwendolyn unsure if she was really clueless or if she was making light of the conversation that was going to follow.

"The marriage talk" But May still chose to clarify.

"Oh"

'That all I get a 'Oh' what am I a chopped liver you should be screaming in joy at the mere thought that I would marry you' May silently thought but did not voice her unhappiness.

Ignoring Amira's text box May continued.

"Why did you agree to marry me? Why not marry another noble?"

Gwendolyn took some time to think about May's question and after a while, she answered.

"You are the safest option"

Her answer shocked May

'I am the safest option? I would like you to know I committed 2 massacres and I violated the Geneva Convention every other Saturday'

May still kept her thoughts silent she still needed her no need to burn this bridge after all, May was sure if she told her all she did then any hope of getting those tropes would be crushed.

Gwendolyn seeing May's visible unhappiness at her answer decided to elaborate.

"You fulfil the 3 things I needed from a spouse"

"First you have the common people in the back of your hand, so that will allow me to quell any thoughts of rebellion"

With those words, it finally clicked to May why Gwendolyn looked so familiar to her.

'So that's the blond that nearly got me killed'

With her reasons said Gwendolyn stopped talking and started observing May she saw the subtle twitch of her brows and how her mouth twitched every so often.

After a while, May processed Gwendolyn's words and chose to ask some questions.

"What's wrong with the economy?"

Gwendolyn looked at May like she was insane, usually she would not state the obvious she would just stay silent but May's earlier smirk flashed in Gwendolyn's mind.

"I don't know maybe the fact that bread costs a silver and the fact that a regular commoner earns half a silver per day of work "

May was able to see that the corners of Gwendolyn's mouth slightly curved upwards, she was obviously happy at her remark.

May was sure that she knew how to ruin Gwendolyn's mood but she chose to let her have this one.

After a while of discussing some more unimportant details they both finally put forth their terms for this marriage to work.

Gwendolyn went first

"When we get married you are not allowed to make any decisions that might affect the dukedom in any way shape or form, you are only allowed to control the economy of the dukedom and if it is below my standard even that will be stopped, understood?"

"Hmmmm I am fine with that "

Hearing May's answer, Gwendolyn nodded.

"My conditions are as follows you will not date, sleep with or cheat on me with anybody as that will make me a hypocrite to anyone following my religion, of course, I will follow this rule as well and I would like to make one this clear the religion is mine you will not use it for any purpose that includes using my title of Pope, you will not sabotage, try to scheme or try to destroy my religion, you are marrying Mey Paker not Pope Paker is that understood ?"

This time Gwendolyn took more time to think she was unsure what May had planned but she needed her support.

"I am fine with that."

May sprouted a huge grin as she stood up and extended her hand.

"To a happy marriage"

Gwendolyn followed after her and shook her hand and gave her a nod.

"Good now shoo I have a poison to make and a wedding document to make"

Gwendolyn took a good look at May and her grin, she had nothing to say so she turned away and started making her way towards the door,

She turned around for one last look at May and continued out the door her last thought before she exited was still in her head.
