I relaxed and finished the park lunch with him. Done eating, we gathered up our litter, stuffed it into a bag, and walked back to his Hummer, which was parked in the east lot. It didn’t take long for Jax to slip his hand over mine and provide it with a gentle squeeze.

“This may sound absurd, but you’re the kind of guy I would like to have as a boyfriend.”

I laughed. “You don’t even know me.”

“I’m going off my intuition. Most relationships begin that way. First comes attraction, then comes intuition, and…”

“Stop, Jax,” I interjected. “Don’t make a fool of yourself. It’s just a lunch date on company time. You’re maybe reading too much into these minutes together.”

Unaffected by my response, he said, “I’ll change your mind. You’re going to look back on this afternoon as the beginning of something great between us. The first of a long novel.”
