Failing would cost him his life?
Vince swallowed hard.
"That is the condition of the Blood Trial. It is only offered once during every entry exam; however, if you fail, the consequence is death. A judge has the right to offer it, but the question is, can you take the risk, young man?"
He couldn't give a prompt answer to Lord Damian and gritted his teeth.
"You have the right to say no, of course. Elder Damascus is right. There might be someone in the final round who needs it and is far more deserving of a second chance than you."
"But you're offering this to me. Why?" Vince couldn't help but ask.
His blue eyes met the city chief's obsidian ones, blazing and cold.
Was it because of Raine?
No, Vince thought.
Raine trained him, but she never gave him hints on how the entry exam would go. And the city chief didn't seem like someone who would be partial just because of that.
