The truth

The next day I mentally prepared myself for what is to come, although I'm only going to tell her after lunch.

I'm terrible at things like this, I don't even know how to comfort someone.

But it is the right thing to do.

After lunch and a little break, I called Halley and told her to sit next to me.

"I have something to tell you Halley" I said with a bit of reluctance.

"What is Mr. Ken?" Halley asked curiously.

Ahhhh, how am I supposed to do this?

I took a deep breath and said after a few seconds.

"I'm afraid you won't be able to see your mom in Montana" I said with difficulty.

"Why Mr. Ken, is she somewhere else?" Halley asked innocently.

"No, I'm afraid you'll never see her again, she's in a better place now" I said waiting for her reaction.

"M-Mr. Ken, y-you're not serious, a-are you?" Halley said on the verge of breaking down in tears.

"Sorry Halley, sorry I couldn't help you see your mom" I said as I hugged her.

"*Sniff**Sniff*, Mr. Ken where's my mommy?" Halley said holding onto Ken as she cried.

"I don't know, but right now, I'm here" I said with a comforting tone.

Halley cried for an hour until she fell asleep while she was still clinging to my chest.

I just took her to her room and sat next to her while she sleeps.

The old man left before everything started, so there is no one in the house.

I guess I can only wait for her to wake up.

'If I had arrived earlier, maybe I could have saved her' I thought guiltily.

That is a lie.

I could barely handle an AB+, and that was after having experience with a gun and with the bat, and this one is supposed to only focus on speed.

An AB- is simply a killing machine, if it had noticed my presence I would be dead.

I would like to be the protagonist who can save them all and have a girlfriend in the first chapters, but I'm just an engineer who never reached or wanted to reach his true potential.

But at least as long as I can protect Halley it will be enough for me.

Not only because I love Halley, but because I also owes it to her mother

This will be my first purpose with someone else, to protect Halley and make her happy.

After 2 hours Halley woke up and she seems much less energetic than normal and she has a blank look.

It's for the best, telling the truth hurts, but it's always for the best.

I patted her on the head making her aware of my presence.

Seeing me, Halley hugged me again and she began to cry silently.

Halley cried for half an hour more, before calming down enough to speak.

"*Sniff* M-Mr. Ken, a-are you sure I won't see my m-mommy again?" Halley asked with a little hope.

"Unfortunately, I am sure, one day I will tell you the story of how I know" I said calmly.

I can't show sadness, that would only make Halley feel worse.

"Don't worry, if it's any use I'll always be here" I said with a smile.

"R-really?" Halley asked with hope and a little mistrust.

"Yep, I'm from Latin America, technically I'm immortal" I said while hugging Halley.

After a few minutes Halley calmed down almost completely, but this will be the best mood she will have for a while.

"Tell me Halley, do you want something? Anything that can cheer you up" I asked curiously.

"Mr. Ken, c-can you stay here tonight?" Halley asked with a little fear of rejection.

"I doubt I have a choice" I said reluctantly.

I'm not good at sleeping with people nearby, in fact when I sleep I distrust even my own shadow.

I can hear and feel EVERYTHING and that does not help my sleep, the most possible is that I am unable to sleep, plus I have to watch Halley

But hey, it's the least I can do for Halley's well-being.

Halley is still clinging to me, which worries me a bit.

I don't want her to develop a dependency on me and she will be unable to be alone, but that problem will have to wait until at least a few weeks.

"Well Halley, I'll stay here sitting next to you, if you need anything you can tell me" I said as I patted her on the head.

This will be a long night for me, but it's not like it's the first time that I haven't slept for a day.

After this I made dinner with Halley following me at all times, then sat next to her while she sleeps.

Today was a difficult day, but finally I have no worries or anything to hide, so I am calmer.

By the way Halley is now sleeping while she hugs her little owl, apparently she is more fond of him now than before.

Now my mission is to get Halley out of that sad state, which will be difficult, but I will try.
