Chapter 20

Isabella wasn’t in class that next week.

After noticing the bruises on her, that was very alarming to me. I recounted all of the work meetings I missed, school functions that I had called in sick for, even the soccer games and events that my siblings were taking part in. I lost such a big portion of my life.

And now, I’m not sleeping and I’m scaring Jessica. She’s concerned about me, insisting that I miss out on class until I’m better. I didn’t come all the way out to Portland to start hiding again. I won’t let this control me. I can’t.

It was dark and cloudy all day, I kept expecting it to rain, but it didn’t. It was stormy in Portland so often that I should keep an umbrella in my bag, but I must’ve forgotten it.
