Chapter 30

Thinking of his mother’s grave, he asked, “Why was her maiden name, Roaming Bear, on the gravestone if the court refused to let her change it?”

Robert sighed sadly. “She married a white man whose name was sullied by his treatment of her. And even though she couldn’t use her maiden name legally, the elders were reluctant to let his name appear on the stone. They felt it would disturb your mother’s rest.”

They all sat in silence. Then Robert said, “We’re all that’s left of the immediate family: me, Miriam, you, Henry, and James, of course. He was taken in and adopted when his mother died in childbirth. His father had been killed in a car crash shortly before he was born.”

At the mention of James’ name, Morgan felt a swell of emotion. Before he could process it Megan was asking, “Can you tell us about our father?”
