Prologue

There is said to be a land of angels, a land of peace. For a person to go there, they must have the qualities of a saint. It is a radiant land, full of light and harmony. They say that just a short second on this land can cause you to feel as if you have been blessed by a god, that this is a place for the best of the best, a place fit for kings.

"What the hell is going on!?" In this beautiful land, a holy being, shrouded in light was yelling at his servants.

"He should have died years ago! Why the hell is he still alive!?" The holy being thunderously roared.

"What the hell have you all been doing while I've been recovering!?"

"His father had maxed out luck, king. His only wish was to protect his family... His wish stopped most of our attacks." one of the servants answered.

"He. Must. Die. NOW! Put all energy reserved into killing him! Just make sure he loathes life itself."

"And you! You wait for him in purgatory and make sure he doesn't get any more points!" It pointed at a glowing ball of light that was quietly floating a few meters away.

The ball of light made a robotic sigh in a flat tone and teleported away in a flash of golden light.

"You all better pray for your lives that he doesn't have enough points." The holy being flashed in divine light and disappeared.

...

Seth Berner was probably the most unlucky kid of all time, he was born into poverty, and it seemed like lady luck was out to get him. He was born with a frail body, and his ability to learn was abysmal. He wasn't exactly stupid, but it was like someone or something was limiting his brainpower, and perpetually sapping his strength. The only thing Seth had going for him was what he thought of as an unparalleled will, the likes of which the world had never seen before.

Living on the streets at thirteen, it is only because of his strong will that he had not given up already. His parents died in a mysterious fire that appeared out of nowhere and burned away everything he had. Because he had been homeless since he was seven, he had almost no education. Seth knew that he would not be able to do anything with his life, but he had grown to have an unrivaled hatred towards the heavens. After everything he had gone through, he hated fate, luck, and anything worshipped as a god. If those things existed, they existed only to ruin his life and torment him.

Seth was waiting for death to take him, but he loathed the thought of giving in to the higher powers. He wanted to prove to the world that it could take everything from him, but it cant break his will. Every few days after the deaths of his parents, horrible accidents had started happening around him. Fate had dragged him into car crashes, fires, terrorist attacks, robberies, etc. He always had to stay on his toes. But somehow, he never failed to survive. No matter what horrible things happened around him, he managed to survive everything thrown at him with minimal damage to his body.

Seth dragged his bruised and beaten body through the streets. Seeing the maddened look in his eyes, everybody stayed far away. He was running from a dog. It was foaming at the mouth. As he ran away, the dog got faster. People were practically jumping out of the way at this point. Many of them tried calling the police or animal control.

As Seth looked around in a hurry, he spotted an old abandoned building about 50 meters away. He raced towards the building and rushed inside. Just as he closed the door behind him and locked it, the dog slammed into the door with a loud crash. Seth was safe, for now.

The building was dark, Seth blindly felt around for a light switch.

There was a low hum as the lights flickered on. Seth was very aware of his heavy breathing as he tried to calm himself down. Seth looked around the building. It was clean and empty, too much so, the place looked like a new office building. Seth's sixth sense was telling him that something was wrong. There was a loud bang. A crash echoed around the office building.

"Let's go boys, we bag this one and go grab some lunch after!" a man in a SWAT uniform yelled out. He had just broken through the roof. Seth's eyes swelled in surprise, a feeling of overwhelming fear spread throughout his stiff body. A few more people dressed in SWAT gear jumped down from the floor above.

Seth stood still. His body refused to move. The SWAT team was steadily walking towards him with their guns aimed and ready to fire. Seth's body eventually gave in to his will and ran away from the group. He forced himself to ram into the closed door as the men started firing. With a loud crack, the door burst from its frame and fell to the ground. A piercing pain shot through Seth's shoulder as he stumbled onto the sidewalk, but the loud sound of gunfire woke him from the suffering.

The men in SWAT suits were still coming after him. One of them sprinted to him and knocked him onto the ground with a harsh blow to the back of his head. Seth felt his consciousness slipping away as he heard pedestrians screaming.

Seth awoke in a dark stone room with no windows, chained to the ground, sitting in a metal chair. He was sitting at a table for two, an interrogation table. There was a metal door on the far side of the chamber. A light on the roof turned on and illuminated the room, causing Seth to blink. He heard a creaking sound as the door slid open. A man in a suit walked through the door. Two rugged-looking guards stepped in after him, nodding to some armed guards outside. The door was closed behind them by a gatekeeper of his cell. The man in a suit sat in the seat opposite Seth. He watched him with a soft expression.

"You know why you're here, don't you?" The man asked amicably. Seth glared at him.

"My name's Jonathan," The man stretched out his hand for a handshake. Seth didn't reciprocate the kind gesture as he was more focused on why he was here.

"Tell me why I'm here!" Seth growled at Jonathan. Jonathan disregarded Seth's words and put his hand down.

"Tell me where the rest of your little troupe is." Jonathan's smile had faded, his soft tone became stern.

"What troupe?" Seth didn't know about anything Jonathan was telling him.

"You know what I'm talking about, you and your little circus paraded around the city. You guys have been causing all sorts of troubles for the higher-ups." Jonathan stared Seth in the eyes like a tiger watching its prey.

"The evidence speaks for itself." Jonathan pulled out a large folder and flipped it open.

"Let's see here. You guys have caused a total of thirty-four car crashes, seventeen robberies, sixty-nine animal attacks, four terrorist attacks. Somehow you guys have even caused over one hundred buildings or properties to fall in a populated area." Jonathan grew angrier as he spoke, his visage filled by his emotion.

"We have seen you at every location of these attacks! And you're trying to tell me that you have nothing to do with this!" Jonathan stood up and slammed the table in rage. Seth looked down at his feet.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you! You little shit!" Jonathan blew up. He grabbed Seth's face and cranked it to look at him. He was breathing heavily in fury as he squashed Seth's face with his hand.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Seth tried to speak through Jonathan's hand.

"Don't lie to me, boy! We all know the truth, no matter how much you try to hide it from us!" Jonathan looked at his guards and walked to the door. After two knocks, the door was unlocked and pushed open by the door-men. The three men walked out of the room. The door slammed shut on Seth once again, leaving Seth alone in the darkness of his cell.

After hours in the darkness, the door slid open once again. This time, a tray of disgusting food that could only be considered slop was angrily tossed at Seth, spilling most of the food on the ground. With splashes of food on his face, Seth looked up at the guard and glared. The guard did not take this well as he stepped into the cell and hit Seth in the face with a baton. Seth fell to the ground, and the guard kicked him in the stomach. As more people heard the beating, they rushed over to the tiny dank room and joined in.

Soon, the small room became crowded with angry guards on their lunch breaks. They were all taking sick pleasure in beating an unarmed child. They beat him for over half an hour until they grew bored of his pitiful wails and futile attempts at fighting back. Leaving the cell after covering Seth with their disgusting spit, the guards were satisfied, for the rest of the day at least.

Days went by like this, darkness, beatings, and interrogation. The days turned to weeks, then to months. All Seth knew was his tiny cell and the angry faces of the guards as they beat him. Remembering the insidious smile on Jonathan's face as he told him of a reprieve. To give in to him. To show him where the rest of his "little group" are.

RUMBLE

At the top of a mountain, a large boulder started tumbling down. As it fell, it increased in speed and caused the mountain to quake. These vibrations caused many other rocks to spill down after it. This rockfall gained momentum over time as it moved down the peak.

Under the base of the mountain, a group of men convened in a large meeting room. Among them, a man named Jonathan spoke to the others.

"We are very close to breaking the boy's spirit, I can tell! We should bring him with us, or we won't be able to find who the terrorists are!"

"Jonathan! You are overstepping your bounds! That stupid boy is useless, and it's obvious that he was just a decoy. He probably knows nothing about them. He aught to just be left here to die for his crimes!" An old man surrounded by members of the group rebuked Jonathan.

"Haha, Bernard! Your sure are growing senile in your old age! I can tell, the boy knows more than he is letting on." Jonathan stared Bernard down with a keen expression, but Bernard wasn't backing down.

"I seem to remember only failures on your last few endeavors, Jonathan."

"And I seem to remember the same for you, Bernard." The two stepped closer to each other, their piercing eyes trying to find faults in each other.

A bulky man stepped between them, towering over them by a full foot in height. The two quarreling men looked up in fear.

"Commander!" They both stood straight and shouted in unison.

"I've had enough of the two of you."

"First, however. We must evacuate from this place in thirty minutes." The commander raised his voice, addressing all of the people in the room.

"Only bring what you need! We have no time for bickering. Move out!" With these last words, the group split up and began moving towards the garage.

In the dark cell that had become his life, Seth heard a rumbling from above. He knew what it meant. The universe had come to take the last thing he had left, his life. In a final act of defiance against God's will, Seth shouted out to the heavens. With all the decaying willpower he had left. He commanded his protesting body to stand up and unsteadily walk towards the door of his cell. Seth grabbed the door and tried to ram it open. The door wouldn't budge. His body gave out and slowly slumped to the ground as he heard the noises of men shouting, of engines roaring to life, and of the loud crashing of rocks.

He had failed.

With his unused voice, he slowly said, "This is it. If there ever is a next life, I will be the one in control." He seemed to have heard a deep laugh resounding in his soul.

An extra-large boulder crushed his cell.

There was a short second of mind-numbing pain.

The world had gone black.

An unknown amount of time later, Seth found himself floating in an endless abyss, nothing but darkness around him. He closed his eyes, thinking he would never open them again.
