"THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!" The Morgan bellowed. I stared at her drolly and shook my head.
"Obviously it isn't." Baset said from her spot inside the invisibility field. I snapped my fingers and deactivated the spell revealing her and the others again. "My student just did it."
"Obviously this is some sort of perversion!" The Morgan yelled, turning to face Baset.
"No it isn't, its spell craft." I said cheekily.
"I AM THE PARAGON OF SPELL CRAFT AND THE RUNIC LANGUAGE AND THAT IS NOT SPELL CRAFT! I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT TO DISRESPECT THE ANCIENT CRAFT WITH SOMETHING SO MUNDANE AS TO WRITE A SPELL ON A PIECE OF PAPER!!"
"So basically you're just unimaginative…" I said drolly then started scribing another spell.
The first spell I ever scribed. When I was done I ripped the page off and channeled mana into it. I cast the axiom spell sigil, black energy formed into the shape of a blade in my hand. I gripped the handle and pointed the blade at a the Morgan "…cause it might be mundane but it is soooooo effective. You claim because the spell craft I practice isn't just modifying old spells but creating new spells from scratch it isn't spell craft. But I say If you're going to call yourself a Paragon of spell craft at least be able to do that…"
The bleachers erupted with shocked gasps and restrained laughter. The Morgan turned around to see most of the other guests whispering and trying to regain their composure. I even saw Dean Baxter and Loki sharing a few words.
<Going for the jugular aren't you, Star Child?> Iris asked with a hint of amusement.
"HOW DARE YOU!" The Morgan roared as she spun back around to me. She was already casting a enchantment spell sigil. I lowered the shadow blade and arched a brow at her.
"Really? A enchantment spell that creates chains of light that binds me…really?" I said sounding unimpressed as possible. The Morgan looked astonished and a split second later her spell was cast and chains of light flew from her hand and circled around me. A second later the spell shattered and I felt a rush of energy from my body absorbing the mana from the spell.
"How…?" The Morgan exclaimed.
"Baset literally just said that I used the mana manipulation and conversion spell! So naturally any utility or enchantment spells are useless against me." I said then started laughing loudly. "You'd think a Paragon of spell craft would know that if she knew that the spell prevents me from casting spells."
The Morgan gritted her teeth and started casting a offensive spell sigil. I saw out of the corner of my eye that Baset was casting a spell of her own. I took a step towards The Morgan then slashed her spell sigil with the shadow blade. The spell sigil was slashed in half and then shattered and exploded and sent a shockwave that knocked the Morgan back. She landed flat on her ass only a few feet in front of the bleachers.
"Trying to cast a offensive spell so close to your opponent? I thought a Paragon would know better than that." I said with a shake if my head. "And to try and cast a fireball spell that you personalized to split into smaller fireballs and explode on impact. A spell like that would hurt you just as well as me…and more importantly Jane and Iris."
"Wait how…oh gods…" The Morgan's face paled and she looked up at me with a expression that was a mix of horror and reverence. "You read my spell while I was casting it. You can read the runes in a spell sigil!"
"Yeah! It's not that hard!" I exclaimed.
"NOT THAT HARD!" The Morgan roared and jumped to her feet. "I HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE RUNIC LANGUAGE FOR THRITY YEARS! AND I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH OF THE LANGUAGE TO DO THAT!"
"Thirty years! Geez I've only been studying this language for a little over a month!" I exclaimed them covered my mouth to hide my smirk.
All the color drained from The Morgan as she stared blankly at me. I could literally see the gears turning in ged head as she digested my words and thought up of a response.
"I can personally confirm that Young Kingston here has only been studying The Runic language for only a month." Dean Baxter said drawing everyone's attention to him. "I let him borrow a book from my personal library about it. While Lady Baset has informed me that you were making strides with your research I had no idea how wide those strides were."
"And this isn't even the full extent of what I've learned!" I yelled to the Dean with a broad smile then looked down at The Morgan who was still looking traumatized. "Don't worry! At the rate you're going you'll probably get to this level of comprehension soon…say another decade."
The Morgan dropped to her knees and stared blankly at the floor. Seeing her like that I wondered if I had perhaps gone a little too far. Then she scrapped her perfectly manicured nails across the hardwood floor of the stage and glared at me. I saw pure fury in her eyes as she raised her hand and started casting a offensive spell sigil, it was the same cluster fireball as before.
Dropping everything I channeled volt attribute mana throughout my body and with my increased agility grabbed two rectangular blocks that I had enchanted days before and spun on my heel and dashed to Jane and Iris. Grabbing the two of them close I channeled mana into the one of the enchanted blocks and activated a defensive spell sigil.
I heard the fireball fire from The Morgan's spell and hurl towards us. Ice sprang from my spell sigil and leapt to my chest and started to spread around to my body. Time felt like it crept to a crawl as I looked over my shoulder and saw The Morgan's fireball barreling towards us and then quickly blocked by a wall of ice. There was a loud boom as the fireball crashed into the ice wall followed by a hiss.
I stood up straight and turned to look at the ice wall that had blocked the attack. It was the result of the defensive personalized spell that I made. Ice fortress. The ice wall melted and the liquid floated around me and turned into a frost-like shroud.
"YOU CRAZY BITCH!" Iris roared as she slapped my arm away and turned to face The Morgan. The Morgan looked stunned that we were unharmed. Six swords of light suddenly formed above the Morgan's head and planted into the ground around her then chains of light flew from the hilt and wrapped around the Morgan, restraining her and yanking her down to her knees. I looked over to the bleachers and saw Astrid lowering her hand as a enchantment spell sigil faded in the air.
"No! How dare you!" The Morgan yelled as she struggled against her restraints.
"NO HOW DARE YOU!" Dean Baxter roared. His voice thundered from the top of the bleachers. All eyed turned to him as he stood up from his seat and made his way down the bleachers. He stepped onto the stage and made his way over to The Morgan. He stood over her and glared at her. "Attacking the student of another Paragon in my school not once but three times! I will have reparations for this insult!"
"INSULT!" The Morgan roared. "After what the filthy American peasant said to me! I am a Paragon! To be treated with such disrespect is unheard of!"
"It is unheard of to be spoken to in such a way by your lesser's, Paragon you might be but given the display young Kingston has preformed in your own specialty it is clear that he us anything but your lesser." Dean Baxter said. His voice was hard and cold like iron. He scrunched down until he was eye level with The Morgan. "Given Chase's knowledge of spell craft and the runic language exceeds even that of your own; one who is celebrated as being the foremost expert of our age; it would behoove you to bite your tongue, bow your head, and beg for forgiveness from your better."
A choking silence fell over the coliseum as the Dean's last words left his lips. All eyes were darting from The Morgan to me. The Morgan gritted her teeth as she looked back down to the ground then turned her head away from the dean and huffed defiantly.
"Fine. Have it your way." Dean Baxter said as he stood up and snapped his fingers. A detachment of guardsmen; about ten in total; rushed onto the stage and surrounded the Morgan. Two of them placed golden cuffs on her wrists and Astrid's spell shattered. Before The Morgan could do anything the cuffs glowed with a pale light and she fell to the ground unconscious. "Take her to detention, she can stay there until we make contact with her home country and reparations can be negotiated with them."
The guardsmen nodded and picked the Morgan up and carried her off stage and out of the coliseum arena. Dean Baxter shook his head then turned and smiled at the girls and me.
"I think it might be time to take a little break you three and start again fresh." Dean Baxter said. Baset cleared her throat and hurried up onto the stage.
"Actually Dean Baxter, I was thinking that it might be a good idea to end this assessment, Chase, Iris, and Jane have obviously passed." She said. Dean Baxter shook his head.
"Nonsense! I'm sure young Kingston has much more to show us…" Dean Baxter said turning to me and glancing down at my hand holding the enchanted blocks.
<GIRLS! I THINK MY PLAN BACKFIRED!> I yelled over the telepathic link. Iris reared back and slapped the back of my head so hard I saw stars while Jane pinched my side.
"YOU THINK!" They roared.
Splicer Fact: While becoming a Paragon is a difficult and long road, losing your Paragon status us fairly easy. As only the best of a certain field can become a Paragon and if it is shown that they aren't the best they can be stripped of the title but only if the one that beats them wants it.
