The air entering through his nose caused him to sigh long, even without opening his eyes he asked not to be in a bad dream, one from which he could not wake up. The sound of destruction rang in his ears non-stop and there was no one who could save them.
"Zev, Zev, open your eyes" he heard his younger brother's voice.
Little by little he opened them, he was lying in the rubble, a few people were running near them trying to run away, it was the year 3600 and there was an incident at the famous secret base "The Community of Dawn"
"Zev, get up, we have to move from here" his brother said, taking his arm.
"Milo, are you okay?" was the only thing he could say as he stood up.
"Yes, but hurry up, we have to go. I heard some people say that near the city of the mannequins there are soldiers who rescue civilians, we must get there."
Zev looked around, the desert was completely destroyed, the heat was unbearable and the sun hit his face hard, as he could he began to walk with the help of his brother and they advanced a few steps. He wondered how he had come to this situation, however, at that time there was no clear answer.
They crossed a large part of the desert cautiously, eager to find survivors along the way but when there was nothing, Zev was about to give up, luckily he had Milo, his best support and probably his only family member alive.
"I'm thirsty…" he murmured, throwing himself into the sand.
"We're almost there, hold on."
He got up and they walked a while longer until in the distance they saw a sandy path towards what seemed to be the city of the mannequins, a place where the Dawn workers used to test nuclear weapons.
"It must be here," Milo said, lowering his voice as he saw a huge electrified fence.
"Are you sure?" He looked at him.
Night fell slowly, the cold desert air brushed against their skin making them tremble due to the drop in temperature, the silence was interrupted by the blowing of the wind, the gray tones of the sky gave them no hope. They fell to the ground because they couldn't stand the chills, together they curled up into a ball giving each other a hug.
"We're going to die anyway…" Zev thought.
In that they heard a voice behind the fence, it was masculine but in tune and sang a song capable of comforting anyone. Milo and Zev looked around hoping to make contact with the singing man but there was a girl of about ten behind them staring at them.
"Hey girl, here is the city of mannequins? Please help us" begged Milo dying of cold.
"The lights shine in the sky, the line that divides our dream, when there is no fear, the traveler will appear" the male voice began to sing again but it was the girl who emitted it.
Zev and Milo were baffled, how was it possible for a girl to have a voice like that, impossible. They backed away but she began to sing louder, the song was disturbing, it sure meant something and even so they were scared to feel something inside, soon their instincts would take control of their brains.
"Zev, I… I'm feeling…" Milo said complaining about the headache, "I have the need to kill, I'm going to kill you!"
Zev began to feel the same, apparently the song made them awaken dark instincts, they both threw themselves at each other being controlled by that girl's voice, they began to hit each other with all their might with the sole objective of taking their lives.
Zev was fighting against himself, a part of him was still awake but it was so difficult to get out of the song, thanks to his desperation he thought of screaming, maybe that way he would pay more attention to his inner voice than to the girl's but his attempt was useless , something was not right and he was afraid of losing himself forever.
In an instant Milo threw Zev down, put his arm around his neck to strangle him, with the little air he breathed he gave everything for lost until some strong explosions extinguished the voice of the girl of their ears.
The brothers came to their senses quite confused, a soldier held them both to get them away from there.
"Don't listen to her, put this on" he gave them headphones that isolated any sound.
Zev was good at reading lips, with his headphones on he couldn't even hear the explosions but using his ability he could tell that the soldier was communicating with someone else.
"Reinforcement 090, if possible capture the girl."
The soldier directed them to the other side. Hoping even the clouds ran without stopping, they noticed that there were more people gathered there together with a group of soldiers.
"Citizens please, listen," a soldier spoke using a loudspeaker, "I am Commander Kylen, we will wait for the helicopters, you will be transferred to a bunker in our facilities, there we will protect you."
"Hey commander!" interrupted a woman," do you already have the solution to the problem?"
"I would like to say that we have everything under control but it is not like that, in any case once in the bunker you will not have to worry about anything."
The woman began to claim the incompetence of the military, other people tried to calm her down, if it hadn't been for them, no one else, not even the government would have helped them, those soldiers were not from that country, even the survivors speculated that it was about some specialized unit.
"This is not the end of the world ma'am, we won't let that happen, we have a way to deal with this, I ask you to trust us" said the commander as calmly as possible.
A helicopter arrived, flew the area and dropped ropes to hold the passengers, one by one they were going up and soon it would be the turn of Zev and Milo. When one of the soldiers was about to tie Milo up, a strong tremor shook the ground.
"What 's going on?" people wondered.
One of the cadets took out a device similar to a drone that allowed him to observe from a distance if there was any danger. Approaching were two walkers, that's how they named the shadows that attacked humans, they were beastly in size, with tough but flexible skin at the same time.
"They will take at least five minutes to arrive, three if they extend their legs up to here, they have detected us captain."
"Let the helicopter go" he gave the order to fly away from there to protect the few who had gone up.
The commander asked everyone to get out without separating, the survivors who didn't get on the plane ran to the other side accompanied by some armed soldiers.
"They are about to arrive, what do we do?" Asked the cadet with the drone, "have the reinforcements come," he spoke through his radio.
Zev and Milo ran close to the group even though they were trailing behind, thinking they had gone far enough, but they didn't count on one of the walkers getting out of sight and stopping them before they could go any further. One of its limbs held a soldier with such force that it completely squeezed him.
People began to scream desperately and even got separated from the rest.
"We have to go back to the commander, brother!" Milo exclaimed.
"What am I supposed to do?" Zev was saying inside his thoughts, "I don't even know what I'm doing here."
He looked around, the limbs took on more people, one by one they were being squeezed causing a great bloodbath, Zev was only a spectator in that apocalyptic scene, nothing could get him out of the trance until he saw the walker approach his huge arm towards Milo.
"Zev, help me!" He heard his brother's cry in echoes.
He quickly came to, without thinking twice he was about to launch himself towards the alien when suddenly a strong explosion occurred in front of him. When the smoke cleared, the arm that was holding Milo fell to the ground completely broken.
"Another helicopter is on its way, get on there" a dark-haired girl spoke.
Zev went over to lift Milo up and get him out of the vine where he was without losing sight of the girl, he wanted to make sure that what he saw was real. That female extended her hands, sparkles emanated from them that triggered explosions, as if they were fireworks.
"She's here! A cadet spoke on the radio, "reinforcement 091."
A helicopter began to fly the area, Milo pulled Zev so that they both got into the vehicle but he continued to contemplate the scene.
"Get on all now!" exclaimed the girl.
"You can't stay here alone, come with us" Zev spoke, approaching her to take her by the shoulder while she had her back turned.
"I said come up, now!" the girl gave the order, looking quite irritated.
She turned her head to look into the eyes of the reluctant boy who refused to go up, when he saw her he got a big surprise.
"Ocean, what are you doing here?"
