There was this saying 'Success is usually 99% work and 1% luck' Erian had utilised all of his strength to bring out 500% percent efficiency, but even then, it wasn't enough to help him succeed in the transition. As the Geneticist said, it wasn't about having impressive endurance, or high tolerance to pain because no matter how stubborn you might be, it was only a matter of time before the body goes into overload and the entire genetic structure of the body collapses.
