One of my group study stories was really interesting. We were preparing for a big exam. We met at a library and divided the topics among us. At first, it was a bit chaotic as everyone had different ideas on how to approach the study. But then, we got organized. We used flashcards, made mind maps and quizzed each other. It was a great learning experience and in the end, most of us got really good grades in the exam.
Is it good to study in Hong Kong? There were many advantages to studying in Hong Kong.
In terms of academic qualifications, Hong Kong's PhD qualifications were highly recognized. There were many famous schools in Hong Kong, and they were ranked among the top in the world.
From an economic point of view, Hong Kong was regarded by many as the "first choice for cheap prices." The cost of studying for a PhD in the United States and the United Kingdom was relatively high, but if one could get a scholarship to study for a PhD in Hong Kong, they could basically cover their expenses and even have a surplus. Most of the tuition fees for Ph.D. studies in Hong Kong were around 42,100 Hong Kong dollars per year. The tuition fees varied from institution to institution and from type to type (for example, professional Ph.D. tuition fees were more expensive). There were mainly the following categories of scholarship:
- Government-based Hong Kong Scholarships: The most difficult to apply for. There are about 300 places in Hong Kong. The competition is high, but it includes tuition fee exemption. The annual scholarship amount is about 25,000 - 28,000 Hong Kong dollars. There are also additional conference subsidies and cash prizes.
- Schools: Each university has its own school scholarship, such as the UPL of the University of Hong Kong, the ppfs of the Hong Kong Institute of Technology, etc. The awards and amounts of each school are different. Take the ppfs of the Hong Kong Institute of Technology as an example. At the same time, tuition fees are reduced, and about 27,000 Hong Kong dollars are given every month. There are also conference subsidies and cash awards every year.
- Research Scholarship (PGS): The general standard is 15,000 - 20,000 Hong Kong dollars per month for Ph.D.(Hong Kong Institute of Technology is 18,470 Hong Kong dollars per month). There will be a conference allowance, but there will be no tuition fee exemption or cash award.
However, Hong Kong's PhD program also faced some challenges. For example, the difficulty of applying was gradually increasing because Hong Kong was attracting more and more international students and it valued the background of applicants, such as language grades.(TOEFL written test 550 points/online test 80 points or above, IELTS total score 6.5 points or above and no less than 5.5 points in each individual), academic results (different requirements for different universities, such as 985/211, GPA = 85 points, 4 points system = 3.4; this is a double non-university, GPA = 90, 4 points system = 3.6, etc.).
To sum up, studying in Hong Kong was a good choice for those who valued academic qualifications, had the opportunity to obtain a scholarship to reduce financial pressure, and met the application requirements. However, they also needed to deal with the challenges of the competitive application environment.
