In Nanjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province, a cliff statue excavated in the late Northern Wei Dynasty, more than 1400 years ago, was "disfigured" by local villagers. The villagers entrusted the painter to paint the cliff statue with paint on the grounds of "returning the wish". In addition, in 2018, the Buddha statue of Fengmen Temple Grotto in Anyue County, Ziyang City, Sichuan Province was also "disfigured", with paint repainting and cement repair incidents. These incidents reflected that the villagers 'awareness of cultural relics protection was not strong, and they mistook "destruction" for "protection." At the same time, they also exposed the problems in the propaganda, management, and implementation of protection measures of the cultural relics protection department. Read more exciting novels for free

In recent years, there had been many incidents of cultural relics being disfigured. For example, in 2016,"the most beautiful Great Wall in Liaoning was flattened", and the repaired Great Wall lost its original charm. The thousand-year-old Buddha statue incident in Anyue Grottoes had been renovated into a comical appearance similar to the animated image of Pleasant Goat. In 2018, the Buddha statue in Fengmen Temple Grotto, Anyue County, Ziyang City, Sichuan Province, was repainted and repaired with cement. There was also a Southern Song Dynasty Buddha statue in Dongyan, Zizhong, Neijiang, Sichuan. The believers had painted it into a "curry-flavored" Buddha, and then painted it again. The most recent one was a cliff statue excavated in the late Northern Wei Dynasty more than 1400 years ago in Nanjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province, which was discovered in 2021. In 2024, it was painted with paint by local villagers and believers on the grounds of "returning a wish". Some of these incidents were due to the lack of professionalism of the restorers, such as the spontaneous restoration of some civil organizations; some were due to the lack of awareness of cultural relics protection by the villagers, and the destruction was regarded as protection. The local cultural relics protection department also had problems such as inadequate protection measures, failure to be included in the cultural protection unit in time, and insufficient publicity to the villagers. The restoration of cultural relics should be carried out by professionals in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. The protection of cultural relics was a systematic project that required the joint efforts of all parties. Read more exciting novels for free
