Bro, its clearly stated that he at least wanted to give her a chance cause she is not tom riddle, and yea their relationship was toxic, but in their teenage, they outgrew that. Plus there isn't anyone other that Emily he can have relationship with given that he has a boner for magic and it was part of character development. And I personally liked that part it was amusing.
