I want to write a new review after hitting the 800th Chapter, now that the many twists that are in the story becomes more apparent. The Romantic Cultivator isn't a typical cultivation story and is written with the heroines in mind. For this story, I don't want the heroines to be just vases and they don't have to depend on the MC since harem has a bad name because of this. So, this story starts with many mysteries and schemes by the various heroines. The main plot actually starts after Chapter 200 with hints that of the 3 mysterious 3 divine palaces and of the immortals that are trying to meddle directly. I also want to write about the trials, many trials in fact *laugh*. And also a comedy with a MC that can slap himself, rather than slapping the faces of his enemies (This is too easy to write and there isn't a logic to it with enemies that never learn from their mistakes and keep underestimating their opponents). I also want to write a MC that is already experienced but he is an Anti-Hero like Han Solo who is a typical young master and someone that actually conforms to the rules of the celestial fraternity, rather than be the special one that always break it and everything is last minute cater to the well-being of the MCs. Hence, the stage of a grand story vision that involves the entire cultivation world is set, with the strong being the strong, the weak being the weak. And lastly, this MC will talk alot because he is slapping himself and there won't be alot of of chapters that just talk just great an enemy is while the MC says little to look smart, then have the how great enemy dies suddenly. It isn't a story about the enemies but the MC so there will plenty of dialogues in this romantic cultivation story. It is called the Romantic Cultivator, for a reason, right?

The story actually starts in the middle realm of the Celestial Realm and not the mortal realm. The MC will go down the lower realm at times during his trial.

I think that you are looking for male Mary Sue cultivation stories like in the system stories. You prolly can search under system or game genre.
You just take thing to extreme end on both side? I don't mind story where mc fail sometimes, but some story just intentionally always make the MC braindead, act like a child, or having inconsistency with the character design itself, not all of MC have to be either mary sue or braindead. But author usually fail to develop an MC that are good, but not perfect, usually they go over the top and it just become too much. I have read story where mc have flaw, it usually the military novel author that done it right, reader can see the mc thought, and sometimes think the same as the mc only to find out that those thinking is not perfect. Some MC make great military leader, but fail as a family head, and create a spoil young master. When author create an MC that need time to do 1 thing, and he forgot about other important thing, he just doesn't have the time to do both at the same time. that mc is a good mc, not a mary sue, because that just mostly wishfulfilment novel, and not a braindead mc, because that a fail product. Back to the question I ask of you, I will make it clearer, I want to know weather your novel gonna be a fail imitation like intentionally change the mc IQ to be lower or higher depend on weather you want him to faceslap himself. Because that would just create inconsistency. Japanese author consistently write a mc that start out very bad, and develop over time. While most will view it as a bad mc, webnovel writer have made much worse mc because they want to create an anti mary sue mc, but just go too far. In fact, most mary sue mc hater, don't really hate the mary sue, but the fail imitation of mary sue which is the young master mc, which always go over the top because chinese author like to copy plot without putting soul into their story.
It isn't me that is taking things to the extreme. Too many people thinks that they are smarter than a MC due to a third party POV. This story itself is a brain teaser with a mystery so it will end up fooling the readers and making them feel dumb. You won't be able to last a few chapters in the story unless you have a higher IQ than the MC. So I really don't know if I should recommend this story to you as it was too brain frying for many of the readers. The ones reading are those that are able to take emotions very well. The story itself is an arrogant cultivator who had plenty of ego after being one of the top cultivators for a long time so I don't know what you mean by acting like a child. Or a child that thinks like an adult.

For the second question on whether it is the lower or higher IQ thing, while the readers can see the MC's thoughts, it won't be 100% right or wrong and the readers must guess if that is the correct one. It is because the MC will also lie to himself and later develop a heart demon that argues with him. Story is a cultivation story about an unlikely imperfect hero that screws himself in bad situations. So the MC is imperfect and have many quirks so I'm not sure if you like it or not. In fact, the MC has more persoanlities than the usual MC.
I'm going to answer this question properly since you're not looking for Mary Sue stories, which is my bad for suggesting so. It isn't a story where the MC always fail or the MC isn't gonna to win. There are constant battle of wits between the MC and his opponents, so it isn't just about cultivation strength which covers the first 130 chapters. It isn't because the MC is smart or stupid. It is because his opponents are slapping him with their wits and the MC has to decide between his honor to protect his love ones or his life. The story is also about an 'unromantic cultivator' rather than a romantic cultivator.

Ranting: Honestly, I'm just very skeptical because, I was trick into reading a lot of Masochistic type of mc because some author use the not perfect mc as description, but they end up over abusing the mc, and making the mc really become non realistic, and take thing too far. One story I read, they make the mc character very unstable as sometimes, he deal with thing very smoothly, but later, with similar problem, he left behind so many red flag that the author intentionally make the mc left behind on purpose, and even write that the mc are aware of it, and ignore it, and use those red flag to attack the mc later. When they could have just make the mc not aware of it in the first place. Anyway, I'll read this story now
In this story, the MC is a typical cultivator is actually a former sect leader, so there won't be martial tournaments or that he would be an arrogant cultivator that picks a fight with the others to show off how good he is. In fact, he is just a normal arrogant cultivator like most of his peers that lived for several hundreds of years. The problem that he faces at the start was a fix that got him into trouble a hundred years ago and he had no idea why it had happened. It is actually a light comedy about a cultivator that is later forced to become a more romantic cultivator.
