AU means alternate universe. Any of those fics you see with a female harry or major time travel or even with harry and Hermione getting together like they should have (**** Ronald hes an ass) is considered AU

While FanFictions are generally different than the original (sometimes characters have different personalities) AU (alternative universe) generally means that the fundamental world is different, for example a different history, or different laws. It’s something that is so drastic that it can no longer be considered the world in which the original work is written in. Gender change falls under AU as well though sometimes it makes no difference on the story.
