His 400 experience is just about hunting dragons... He spent most of his time secluded. He just got out of seclusion when he smelled dragons or something else and went to hunt them. He didn't expended 400 years learning accounting or something that could help him earn money without fighting

Every time he killed a dragon he became more berserk (in regards with dragons) because of his dragon slayer magic. And from what I remember of the series, Acnologia stayed inside the dragon cementery below a castle until he sniffed the crystal dragon in a movie.
