In Southeast Asia, there's a witchcraft practice that used spirits of unborn babies to create some sorcery items. This practice has a wide variation of the name in different countries, for example, Gui Zai in Chinese culture, Toyol in Indonesia, and Kuman-thong in Thailand. These baby spirits can usually be found in two forms. The first type which is also the most common form, in a porcelain doll form. These type of baby spirits usually are made from the soil of the grave of dead or aborted babies, or sometimes ash of the dead baby. These types are usually less disturbing and harmless if compare with the second type which is made from the real unborn fetus...

This story is about the grandparents of a friend who lives in South East Asia.

Mr. A was a farmer who lived in a small village with his pregnant wife Mrs. A. Well, at the time, women still fully depended on midwives when giving birth. So, their baby died during birth, and since it's a taboo that time, the stillborn baby was getting 'handled' by the midwife almost instantly without showing it to its parents. You must be wondering why I addressed the baby with 'it', well, you will get it later.

After a few years, Mr. A had earned some money and moved out of the village, his wife had passed away years ago due to the infection after birth. He moved to a small town and learned about a famous sorcerer that said to have magic items that are able to improve life, so Mr. A went to meet him, and he showed Mr. A an object wrapped in yellow cloth, he told him that was one of his rarest magic items, it was made from the finest ingredients that he had to spend a lot of money and effort to get it. Since it's made from such a rare material, so the effects would be very good. Mr. A who was dreaming to be a successful person, thought this magical item could actually help him, so he bought it from the sorcerer at a high price.

However, after he bought the magical item, he starts to experience some weird things, although he had followed the sorcerer's instructions by feeding his own blood to the magic item every night. He had some disturbing dreams every day, in the dream, he saw his wife sitting on his bed feeding a baby with a bottle of blood, after she feeds the baby, she will look at him with a distorted smile...

Disturbed by the dream, Mr. A decided to look for the sorcerer but he was nowhere to be found. When Mr. A was in a total confused state, he met an old monk, he bows to the monk as a sign of respect, the monk asks if he was having any problems, and so Mr. A told the monk about his dream and the magic item. The monk then asks Mr. A to show him the magic item, and so Mr. A did as the monk said. The moment the monk saw the magic item, he asked Mr. A if he ever loses a child before, Mr. A nodded in amaze, then monk told him that he senses some relation between Mr. A and the spirit that resides in the magic item. The monk opened the cloth that covered the magic item and to Mr. A's horror it's a dried dead body of a baby. After recited some reincarnation verse to the dead baby, the monk told him to make a police report, he suspected this might be a result of some illegal case. And so, Mr. A passed the dried baby to the police.

A few months later, the sorcerer and a midwife were arrested for illegal abortion and murdering newborn babies. That dried dead baby that used as the magic item was, in fact, Mr. A and Mrs. A's child, the baby did not died during birth, it was a healthy boy but strangled to death by the midwife in order to get paid for the 'rare finest quality ingredient' from the sorcerer. Maybe it is the fate that the baby was end up getting bought by his own father...
