Good News

"Hey Mum!" Izuku yelled as he walked into his house. "I've got some good news."

The hallway was empty, but Izuku could hear his mother's heavy footsteps hurriedly making their way downstairs towards him after his shout.

"What is it honey?" she asked breathlessly. Taking one look at Izuku, she ran down the stairs enveloping him in a hug. "Oh, my poor baby. What happened to your eyes?" She pressed the back of her hand against his forehead and opened his mouth to have a look inside; she was not pleased with her quick check-up. "Right, that's it. We're going to the hospital!"

"Wait ..."

"Nope, no arguing mister. You come home wearing a blindfold and a fever, and you expect me to just sit and ..."

"Mum, it's my quirk."

Inko Midoriya was not a woman that could easily be surprised. Working as a nurse in the local hospital had meant she had seen her fair share of weird and abnormal cases. Sometimes they weren't even quirk related - she couldn't believe the depths of human stupidity and depravity. However, her son's statement just now had left her mouth opening and closing like a goldfish. She quickly glanced at the photos adorning the hallway walls - Izuku was smiling in every single one of them. But since he had turned eight, when it became apparent he would not develop a quirk, that smile had become more and more forced with every picture. She didn't want him to be crushed if this was a false alarm.

"Are you sure honey?"

Izuku, in lieu of a worded response, undid his blindfold exposing his crystal blue eyes.

"I can see everything."

Inko was once again rendered speechless. It was confirmed. He really did have a quirk. There was no other explanation for how he left home this morning with green eyes and returned with eyes that held the sky in them.

Hugging him again, she sniffled, "When do you want to go to the doctors?"

"What about my so-called fever?" Izuku smirked.

"Oh, I just lied to make it easier to convince you to go to the hospital," Inko said with a breathless laugh. Releasing him from the hug, she asked, "When you say you see everything ... What do you mean exactly?"

Izuku gave a small smile. "Basically down ..."

A loud beeping noise interrupted him.

"My cookies!" exclaimed Inko, rushing into the kitchen.

(LINE BREAK)

Despite the good news, dinner was a muted affair. Every time Inko wanted to bring up his new quirk, she saw the quiet, contemplative look on her son's face and decided against mentioning it.

Izuku, on the other hand, was internally at war with himself. He had two jumbled sets of memories that he had to sort through so you could excuse him for being completely silent during this momentous affair.

Quietly thanking his mother for dinner, Izuku made his way upstairs, completely missing the worried look Inko shot his way.

I'm exhausted, he thought, as he collapsed on his bed. Sleep took him quickly soon afterwards.
