Chapter 1

Y/N stood on the edge of the dolphin pen with a fish in her hand. She spoke to the dolphin before giving it the fish. She then entered the water with a toy for the dolphin and threw it to the other side of the pen. The dolphin shot after it, pushing it with its nose to bring it back to her. She took the toy and threw it again, and the dolphin shot after it again. After a few rounds of throwing and bringing it back, Y/N put the toy aside and started to pat the dolphin.

A conversation between her boss and another person caught her attention. She went back to the ledge of the dolphin enclosure, which the dolphin joined her on, and watched the two. She put her hand on the dolphin and rubbed its head. She waved it back into the water and it reluctantly obeyed.

Someone had taught the dolphin that habit and it wasn't healthy for it to keep doing that.

Y/N finally tuned into the conversation between a woman and Y/N's boss, Mr. Zwach.

"- is Y/N, she is the animal behaviorist, and part time vet here. She works with the animals here to make them feel at home and she also does physical checkups to make sure they are healthy. I assure you, no one here is alien. We've done thorough background checks with all our employees." Her boss said.

"Alright. Thank you. Like I said before, I'm just doing my job, and I don't wish to be on anyone's bad side here." The woman said.

She had short auburn hair and was wearing a black pants, grey tank top, and a black leather jacket over her top. She looked at Y/N, who was just peaking over the glass from the ledge she was lying on. The woman waved at her and Y/N waved back shyly.

Y/N then turned around and dove into the water. The dolphin came over and hovered under her for her to hang onto its fin. She pet the side of its head as they moved through the water. She slowly moved to under the dolphin and held on gently to its flippers. She then let go and watched the dolphin swim around a bit. She took note of its movements. The dolphin was healing, probably already healed. It would be released soon back to the ocean.

The institute put a tracker on its pod-mates so they could locate its pod and release the dolphin to its own pod again.

Y/N went to get out of the enclosure, a little sad to leave the dolphin alone again. She went back and changed into clothes. She had to check on the other animals. She walked out toward the building the woman and her boss were talking in front of to get to the other animals. The two were still there talking about whatever they were talking about. Y/N tried to slip by unnoticed but failed.

"Ah, Y/N, there you are! This is Agent Danvers, of the FBI." Mr. Zwach introduced. "I think she has some questions for you. She's asking everyone here."

"Okay..." Y/N replied, starting to get worried.

She never really liked to interact with anyone. She always felt at home with just the animals here. Mr. Zwach left the two alone, saying he had to do paperwork on the animals. Agent Danvers look at Y/N, waiting for her to turn her attention to her.

"You can call me Alex." Alex held out her hand to Y/N, who shyly took it.

"Y/N..." she replied.

"Well, I don't think I really have any questions. Mr. Zwach already answered most of them. And so did the other workers here." Alex said. "But the FBI is doing a survey here to see if there are any potential... targets."

Y/N tilted her head at the woman. What kind of targets?

"Oh, um, well we were tipped that some aliens living in the city could be part of something dangerous. As the victims." Alex said.

"Oh... I don't know of anyone here being alien..." Y/N replied. "I should probably be going to check up on the other animals..." She finished.

"Mind if I tag along? I haven't seen marine animals up close like this before. That is, if that's ok with you. Your boss said that I could." Alex asked.

"Sure." Y/N was intimidated by the agent.

They came over to check on the green sea turtle first. Y/N fed the turtle and allowed Alex to pet it.

"The turtle won't be released back to the wild. It had lost one of its limbs in a ghost fishing net." Y/N explained. "Although the dolphin I was with earlier will. It's been here for a while now but she's healed so we should be releasing her soon."

"Wow. I don't understand how people could be so ignorant about what they do with their stuff." Alex lightly stomped her foot on the ground in annoyance with humanity.

Y/N then went over to check up on the seals and sea lions. She entered the enclosure and Alex joined her. One of the sea lions came up to them and nuzzled Y/N's hand. She scratched behind its ear and it thumped it's tail on the ground like a dog would with its foot. Y/N smiled at the sea lion. She fed them all and the two women headed back to the entrance.

"Thanks for showing me around, Y/N." Alex said.

"No problem." Y/N shyly replied.

"Heh, not much of a people person are you?" Alex lightly pushed Y/N's arm. She just shook her head, smiling shyly.

"I guess I'll see you next time." Alex said as she turned to leave.

That night, Y/N went to the alien dive bar to get a drink. She had only been there for about 20 minutes before...

"Y/N, is that you?" The familiar voice rang out behind her.

She turned around to see Alex and she gave a soft smile.

"Hey, how do you know about this place?" Alex asked. Y/N just shrugs.

"Oh, Y/N, this is my sister, Kara." She gestures to a blonde, long haired woman with cute glasses. She stepped beside Alex and adjusted them on her face.

"Hi, I'm Kara!" She says happily. She goes in for a hug and Y/N starts backing up a little.

"Kara, I'm not so su-" Alex starts, noticing Y/N's uncomfortableness, but Kara is already hugging Y/N, who stiffening at the hug.

Kara eventually lets Y/N go oblivious to her uncomfortability. They got on with the night making jokes and laughing. Well, the Danvers sisters did, Y/N didn't really engage in social interaction a lot. She's a shy, more reserved woman.

Y/N learned more about the sisters, where they work, and learned some of their friends names. Soon the night came to an end and the Danvers sisters dropped Y/N off at her apartment.

"We had fun spending time with you! We hope to hang out again sometime." Alex says out the window.

"Oh, can we get your number?" Alex and Kara ask simultaneously.

"You know, just in case?" Alex adds.

Y/N reluctantly nods and gives them her number. She turns to go to her apartment and once she reaches her room, she collapses onto her bed, soon falling asleep.

The next day, Y/N was again with the dolphin. She fed it and spent time with it. It was the dolphins "happy hour" of socializing. She had just stood up on the ledge and held out a fish for the dolphin.

Her boss came out with another person who had previously requested a tour of the place.

"This is Y/N, our animal behaviorist and part time vet. She engages activities with the animals and does checkups on them at the same time, although that doesn't really make her a real vet." Mr. Zwach explained to the person.

Soon there was a thump as contact was made by the strangers elbow and Mr. Zwachs face. He stumbled back groaning in pain. The stranger kicked him, making him fall. The stranger then took out a handgun and aimed it at Y/N. Y/N had just seen what happened and dove into the tank. She wasn't fast enough though. The bullet grazed her right side,  not very deep, but not very shallow either. Blood started to fill the tank. Y/N quickly made her way to the other side of the tank, gasping and groaning in pain.

A few black cars pulled up outside the entrance and people came pouring out of the vehicles.

"Go apprehend the shooter! You! Check on the manager. I'll go check on the dolphin behaviorist." A familiar voice barely reached Y/N's ears.

Y/N was lying on her stomach, breathing heavily, groaning and trying to grip the ground in pain. She brought her right leg up and lifted her chest up a little bit with her forarms, sharply inhaling through her gritted teeth at the pain.

Alex rushed to the behaviorist's side. "It isn't very deep. You'll be ok, but you have to help me get you to the cars." She put Y/N's arm over her shoulder and helped her to her feet.

Y/N instinctively shot a hand to her side, hissing in pain when her fingers brushed across it. She cupped her hand over the area, careful not to touch it, but apply pressure to the area in an attempt to dull the pain a bit. This proved quickly to be ineffective. They made their way to the vehicles. Alex's grip was starting to slip on Y/N as she started to wobble around.

"Damnit... Someone help me, she's loosing too much blood!" Alex requested.

Another agent helped Alex get Y/N to the vehicle. "We need to take her to the DEO. There's no time to take her to a hospital." Alex said to the other agent, who nodded in reply.

Y/N opened her eyes a tiny bit, but immediately squeezed them shut. Suddenly the pain kicked back in and the memories of earlier came over her. She groaned in pain and her hand shot to her wound, which was now stitched and bandaged.

Footsteps made their way into the med bay. "Hey, you're awake!" Alex's familiar voice said.

"Where am I...?"

"You're in the DEO. This is where I work."

"So you're not FBI..." Y/N mumbled. Alex chuckled at this.

"How do you feel?"

"Like I've been shot...?" Y/N mumbled shyly.

"Yea. Anyways, the man who shot you was apprehended, but before we could get any information he killed himself. He only had one thing on him that gave us some identity. This symbol." She held up a photo of the symbol on his jacket. It resembled marking one would find on the hood of a cobra, but more intricate.

Y/N recognized it, but didn't say anything. "I've never seen anything like it..." she says avoiding Alex's eyes, staring at the symbol. She knew damn well what it was. Now she knew why she was shot. That shot was meant to kill her. She was one of those "potential... targets".

"Alright, well, when you're released, you'll need to change those bandages once every day." Alex adds.

Y/N was released from the med bay soon after she woke up and was questioned. Her boss gave her a little less than a week off work and won't let her in the water until the wound is fully healed.

Alex drove her home, dropping her off before saying a goodbye.
