In this era, building a decent house required a high cost.
A farmer's family would often need to save for nearly two decades. The husband and wife would have barely enough to eat and spend, and it would also involve the help of the whole family and relatives, before they decide to build a house.
Most of the wealth referred to here was grain, and also the original materials for house construction.
Ahead of time, perhaps ten or so years, beams and other pieces of wood would be cut down and carefully preserved.
The stones needed for the foundation would usually be prepared three to six years in advance.
During times when they weren't too busy with their farm work, the family would transport the stones a little bit at a time, like ants, and pile them up on their land, waiting for the day they'd be used to build a house.
Even children as young as five or six years old may contribute to this effort.
