"Sister Catherine, we meet again."
Catherine still remembered Mark. Because of Randy's previous deceitful words, she had been troubled for quite a while, fearing that if something had truly happened to Mark's family, she might be blamed.
So, that day, she had prayed earnestly for Mark and his family.
Now, seeing Mark's two sons alive and well, Catherine was greatly relieved.
"You're Mark, right? What brings you here today?"
"It's my two kids. They insisted on coming to see you."
Mark smiled as he explained the purpose of their visit.
The night before, when Mark got home, his two children immediately surrounded him.
Reagan, the younger one, claimed he was almost pulled into a world by Uchiha Obito's Tsukuyomi. Meanwhile, Todd, the older brother, said a strange figure from the internet had jumped out of a website and tried to capture them.
Mark thought the kids were just imagining things, perhaps addicted to video games and, even at their young age, already obsessed with anime!
So, he gave them a stern scolding and even took away the computer, intending to make them reflect on their behavior. He ignored their cries and complaints.
However, what shocked both Mark and his wife was that, in the middle of the night, the two boys weren't sleeping. Instead, they were stumbling through reading the Bible.
This astonished Mark and his wife. When they asked the boys what was going on, neither could give a clear explanation. They simply insisted that the Bible had saved them, and that's why they wanted to devote themselves to studying it.
Mark's family had always been devout Catholics. The children's sudden zeal for faith moved them. Still, Mark was cautious, suspecting that perhaps the boys were just putting on a show to get back to their computer games.
But surprisingly, the two children were genuinely committed. As they read the Bible, they humbly came to Mark with questions whenever they encountered words they didn't understand. Even after a full day had passed, they remained engrossed in their reading, unable to put the Bible down.
Last night, Mark even quizzed them, and both answered fluently, much to his delight.
This filled Mark with pride, and he even praised his sons, thinking, "My sons have the potential to become priests!"
He had told them about the origins of that particular Bible, which made the boys admire it even more. They were adamant about visiting the convent the next day to meet the great nun who had given them the Bible.
"That's the whole story, Sister Catherine."
Mark looked somewhat exasperated but also proud at the same time.
However, after hearing this, Catherine's expression remained conflicted for a long while.
Then she looked at the two children.
"May I speak to them alone?"
"Of course!"
Mark, feeling confident and trusting, allowed his two children to follow Catherine into the next room. Of course, if Catherine had been a priest, Mark might have been more cautious about it.
Catherine led the two kids into the adjoining room.
"Are you Sister Catherine?"
"You're so young! We thought you would be seventy or eighty years old."
Todd and Reagan were very respectful, raising the Bible high. The book bore clear signs of heavy use, and Catherine recognized it instantly.
Catherine took the familiar Bible in her hands, gently stroking its cover, then asked the two boys:
"What exactly happened to you that day?"
"Sister, we encountered a monster! It was terrifying, and it especially targeted children!"
"And then a figure of light came out of the Bible and drove the monster away!"
The two brothers talked over each other, recounting the events of that day. Despite some inconsistencies in their words, Catherine was able to piece together the story.
"I want you both to hold this Bible and swear to God that you're not lying."
Without hesitation, Todd and Reagan followed her instructions.
"We swear..."
After they finished swearing, Todd added, "Dad didn't believe us at all. He said we were just confused from playing video games! But it was really dangerous that day."
"Yeah, yeah," Reagan chimed in.
Catherine didn't say much more. Her heart was filled with shock. She then asked about the time when they encountered the strange figure.
"It was right after sunset."
Yes, that was the exact time!
Catherine vaguely recalled that around that time, during her prayers, she had felt a particular heaviness, as if something was hindering her. She had thought she was just tired. But worried that a believer might be in danger, she had pushed through that uneasy feeling.
So, God really does exist!
He had protected both her and the believers!
Catherine was filled with complex emotions. Her first thought was to find Randy and mock him loudly, to show him that his skepticism was wrong.
However, the children's words couldn't be taken as solid proof. It was simply too unbelievable. Even Mark, their father, didn't believe them!
Besides, knowing how stubborn Randy was, unless he experienced something firsthand, he would dismiss it as nonsense.
But beyond that, Catherine began to suspect Randy. Why had the incident at Mark's house happened on the same night Randy had made those comments? Could Randy be connected to the strange occurrences?
Just as Catherine was deep in thought, the door to the room opened, and an older nun entered.
"Catherine, the headmistress wants to see you. Please head to the main hall as soon as possible."
After delivering the message, the older nun turned and left.
"Hmm?"
Catherine was a bit confused. Why was the headmistress looking for her?
Mark, seeing that Catherine had important matters to attend to, quickly gathered his two sons: "You go ahead and take care of things."
Catherine nodded and said goodbye to the two boys. She decided she would pray more for them in the future, and then hurried off towards the main hall.
Upon entering, she was met with the stern gaze of the elderly headmistress.
"Catherine, how long have you been at this convent?"
"It's been over a year now, Headmistress."
Hearing this question, Catherine's heart fluttered. Could it be that her hard work had been recognized, and that she was about to be promoted?
"Hmm, a year indeed. How many believers have you recruited for the church in that time?"
This question left Catherine stunned. She had spent most of her time studying scriptures and focusing on her spiritual growth, rarely venturing out.
Before she could respond, the headmistress continued, "I recall assigning you a task some time ago, didn't I? To spread the Gospel to an Asian boy."
Catherine's heart sank. Randy had been incredibly difficult to deal with. Even if the Pope himself tried, he probably couldn't convert him!
Moreover, Randy had no respect for religion or God and had even made jokes about her being a nun.
The failure of this task was definitely not her fault!
"Headmistress, Randy is... well, he's an atheist."
"No!"
The headmistress's tone became resolute: "Catherine, that's an excuse! If you had never seen a plane before and someone told you a giant metal object could fly, would you believe it?"
The headmistress moved closer to Catherine, with an air of great compassion: "Perhaps you didn't sincerely try to touch his heart. God's existence is beyond his understanding, and our role is to break through such barriers."
Ashamed, Catherine lowered her head: "Yes, you're right."
"Then spread the Gospel to him! Make him one of the most devout believers in God. I believe you will become a qualified nun."
"Yes, I will handle it."
This was essentially her final task for promotion!
Catherine felt a surge of excitement, though she was also troubled by Randy's attitude.
After bidding farewell to the headmistress, she wandered aimlessly, feeling lost. She thought about asking someone for advice, but unfortunately, her roommate Eve had been missing for days.
"Sigh, I'll have to visit Randy's place again."
This would be her third visit, which was ironic given that she had visited Randy more often in a year than she had visited her own home.
Before setting out, Catherine recalled Randy's previous comments. She looked at her white nun's habit, frowned in thought, and decided to change into a darker one.
While changing, she also remembered Randy's teasing words from their last meeting.
Since she was already changing, she decided to put on different stockings as well...
However, by the time Catherine finished dressing and arrived at Randy's house, she knocked for a long time with no response.
The headmistress hadn't told Catherine that Randy wasn't home at the time!
