Empty Promises

Sneering, Emily looked at her father and said, "Seriously dad, why do you keep on making these empty promises? If you're really capable then why not first give mom a proper status in the society?" She said sarcastically.

Frankly, she did not like her daddy. He allowed her to be bullied by her stepmother and half siblings. Even if he didn't know about it, when he found out he would still stand by their side, not caring whether they were in the wrong or not. This caused her to be despised and mocked by others. Furthermore, he was not a decisive person. He could never say no to anything his mother, the matriarch of the Rustin family said, whether good or bad. Well, she didn't really have a problem about that as the matriarch was a fierce and manipulative woman. Anyway, what disgusted her the most was his hypocrisy.

"Emily!" Laila barked.

"What?! Was I wrong? You and I know very well that illegitimate children are not allowed into the main family, how much more become the heir to the family's assets? Mum you...!" Emily simply didn't know what to say to her mom. Why did she keep on being led by the head this way?

"It's not the same this time. Jaden is the only son in the family", Edward answered, feeling quite ashamed.

"How does..."

"That's enough Emily!" Laila banged the table angrily.

"You know what? I've already lost my appetite. I'm going back to my room", Emily said and walked out on them.

"You...!" Laila yelled angrily and turned to her husband "You pamper her too much! Now see what you've turned her into! She doesn't even respect her own dad now! You're too tolerant of her atrocious behaviour!" Laila huffed angrily while Jaden just watched on. He seemed to be enjoying a good show.

...

Emily lay on her bed, fuming when someone knocked on the door.

"Come in", she said grumpily.

"Sis..."

"Don't tell me you actually want the Rustin family's assets?!" Emily exclaimed alarmingly. Jaden smiled at his sister helplessly. Since when did he say anything about wanting the family's assets?

"I forbid you from doing so! This family is too complicated and dirty. Most of its members too are despicable. Especially that Justina. Who knows what she might do to bring you down. She badly wants everything in the family for her daughters", said Emily domineeringly.

"I never said anything about wanting the Rustin family's assets", Jaden said helplessly.

"Aha! That's more like it!" Emily said, feeling satisfied.

"No matter what, I Jaden Sam Rustin, would not want the Rustin family's assets for anything. And if my mom and sis want to be queens and princesses, I would specially build an empire for them!" Jaden vowed to placate his sister. Anyway, he was serious about it.

"Awww...my little brother is so sweet...!" Emily exaggerated, wearing a contented expression.

Jaden stared at his sister speechlessly. This sister of his was so...

...

The next day

Emily strolled leisurely about the campus of C University, where she pursued a course of foreign languages. Lectures had ended and she was preparing for her next class.

"Emily! Good news! You totally wouldn't believe it! The prestigious 'Let's Fight Dance Competition' is being hosted right here in Geneva, Black Street! This time, it's actually a street dance competition! This unexpected competition was definitely made for us!" Blair said excitedly.

Emily's interest was piqued. Since when was it last she danced?

"You got to be kidding me!" Emily couldn't quite believe her ears. She had been waiting for such an opportunity for so long.

"You better believe it. I just got a wind of it this morning. I'm properly going to look into this when I get home after lectures. But...would it be convenient for you to compete? You know...all this stuff about your family opposing your inclusion in dancing..."
