To be honest most of these comments are a bit weird. Verisimilitude wise you need to be able to ignore some glaring details to read stuff like this. Mining with a pickaxe manually in a galaxy spanning civilization is ridiculous. So I'm trying not to think of that because you're right, there likely wouldn't be anything like that. It's ridiculous. I don't think you need to explain in an essay why that's not likely. It's common sense. A galaxy wide civilization would have to be a post scarcity society, but for the sake of being able to get into the story we can just think of this as an alternate dimension where everything bad that could happen did. Which is feasible if you think of quantum mechanics.
