Aela is a worshipper of Hercine - free spirited, wild, survival of the fittest. I'd say she chose the strongest as her mate, I doubt she held marriage as important. She chose the hunting grounds of Hercine over Sovvengar. Aela can be the lover though. And I honestly don't see Aela put any importance to Nord customs that does not relate to battle.
