If you're like most people, you find vanilla ice cream quite inoffensive.
You neither love nor hate it — i.e., it doesn't inspire strong feelings in you.
And if you're eating vanilla ice cream, it's unlikely you're raving about it to anyone.
Now I want you to think about Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream.
I bet that ice cream inspires strong feelings in you!
I bet if you had a big bowl of that in front of you, there'd be a huge smile on your face and you'd want to tell anyone who'd listen how good it is.
What's this got to do with writing?
Well, many of us have perfected the art of writing "vanilla ice cream."
Vanilla writing is both technically sound and inoffensive.
Vanilla writing "does the job" in the absence of anything better.
And the truth is, perfecting the art of writing "vanilla" is necessary if you want to earn a living as a writer.
The economic and time constraints imposed on us by our clients, plus our need to invoice quickly (so we can put food on the table), dictates that we need to be able to consistently churn out writing that is technically sound and "does the job."
Vanilla writing pays the bills.
But sometimes, we want to produce writing that really moves people and inspires them to take action.
Sometimes we want our writing to provoke such strong feelings in people, they feel compelled to tell their friends, "Hey! Read this!"
Sometimes, we want to produce the writing equivalent of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
The good news is, there's a way to turn vanilla into chocolate chip cookie dough. You just need time, and a few extra ingredients.
The power of editing
Most people see editing as the process of turning a messy first draft into something that's publishable. And yes, editing does do that.
But to me, "publishable" is the equivalent of "vanilla."
To me, the real power of editing activates when we take writing that is vanilla (does the job) and turn it into chocolate chip cookie dough (something people rave about and want to share with their friends).
Yes, the editing process for the latter involves a few more steps than you're used to, but I promise, it'll be worth it.
Before you can turn a piece of vanilla writing into chocolate chip cookie dough, however, you need to be sure it really is at the vanilla (i.e., technically sound) stage.
You also need to meet these three requirements:
You know exactly who the ideal reader is,
You know what promise you're making to them, and
Your piece contains all the key information required to deliver on the promise.
If you have all of this in hand, it's time to edit!
Step #1: High-level pass
This is the stage where knowing exactly who you're writing for, and what you're trying to say is crucial.
Because the first thing you need to do is go through your draft and delete anything that is not relevant to the promise you're making.
When I first started putting this post together, many of the things I talked about were general writing tips. They were great tips, but completely irrelevant to the promise I was making — which was how to edit, not how to write.
The second thing you need to do is check your examples.
If the ideal reader for your piece is a doctor, but all your examples are about builders, you need to change your examples. (If you don't, your piece won't resonate.)
Finally, you need to check your sub-headings.
If you promise "5 secrets to great writing" in your title and all your sub-headings are actually "5 mistakes people make when they're writing," then you need to either change your title or your sub-headings.
Step #2 : Structure
A neat and tidy structure for any piece of writing is a three-part structure: beginning, middle, end. Or, my personal favorite: hook, build, payoff.
Let's start with your hook
First, check you have one. The hook appears very early in a piece, and must capture your reader's attention.
(Which is why you must know who the reader is.)
For example, I hooked you at the start of this article by connecting editing — something many writers don't like doing — with ice cream, which pretty much everyone likes eating.
If your piece is missing a hook, and you're not sure how to give it one, I break down five common hooks here.
It's also worth noting that writers often bury their hooks two paragraphs into their content.
I can't tell you how many "first two paragraphs" I've deleted in my time. All that backstory you're giving, the reader doesn't care.
Start with the bit that captures their attention, and then carry on from there. (If you really need backstory for context, you can introduce it later.)
The next structural element we need to look at is our build
This is where you introduce your idea to the reader and show them "what is."
Then you tell them why they should care by showing them "what could be."
In the introduction of this post, I showed you "what is" — vanilla ice cream. It's "does the job" writing.
The problem is, no one's Instagramming vanilla ice cream or telling their friends about it.
Then I showed you "what could be" — chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
Basically, I sold you the dream! Now I need to deliver on that dream.
And I do that via …
The final structural element: the payoff
Many writers think their final line is the payoff, but that's rarely the case.
More commonly, it's the six points, or the 10 tips, or the 15 secrets. Essentially, it's where you deliver on the promise you've made in your title.
Everything I'm walking you through right now, this is all payoff. I'm giving you practical actions that turn your vanilla draft into chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
What do you do if your structure isn't quite right?
If the proper information is all there, it might simply need re-ordering.
But more often than not, this is the part of the editing process where you need to do some re-writing and "hole filling."
Step #3: Remove roadblocks
Roadblocks are things that make the reader stop and go … "Huh?"
It's important to remove these because there are so many things our readers can be doing today. Any roadblock we throw up might make them decide it's easier to go check out stupid memes on Facebook.
What are some common roadblocks?
The first is unnecessary repetition.
This is pretty common in books or articles where an author is battling to meet a word count. So they'll say the same thing five different ways.
It also happens when a writer isn't 100 percent clear on what they're trying to say. So they share a single thought in a few different ways, hoping one of those ways will resonate with the reader.
Don't do this.
Make your point once; make it well. Then move on to the next one.
The second common roadblock is a big word that could be smaller.
Mark Twain (apparently) said:
"Don't use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do."
It doesn't matter how smart your readers are; they will always prefer a small word to a big one.
For example, you wouldn't write "utilize" when you could just write "use."
The third roadblock is jargon.
We all know about jargon because we've all been frustrated by reading it. But often, when we're doing corporate writing, it's not possible to remove it.
You need to use your judgement here. If jargon is putting unnecessary distance between you and the reader, then edit it out. If they're clued up on the topic, a little bit of jargon is okay.
In-jokes are another common roadblock.
These are fun if everyone gets them — but they seldom do. Remember, the people who don't get the in-joke will feel both stupid and distanced from you.
So you'd use them if you're deliberately trying to create a divide between people who get it and those who don't. In all other situations, you'd consider their use carefully.
Awkward syntax is when a sentence is grammatically correct but still sounds weird. In those situations, I always re-phrase the sentence because things that sound weird stop readers in their tracks.
The final most common type of roadblocks are sentences or paragraphs you love because they're awesome and make you sound super-smart.
You know you could cut them out because they're not actively contributing anything, but you leave them there anyway.
These are called darlings. And we all know killing our darlings makes our writing better.
Step #4: Smooth your transitions
This is a very hard one to give practical advice on, but I need to mention it anyway.
If you read through your piece and it doesn't feel like it flows very well, but your structure is sound, then you may need to use linking words like "but," "and," and "however" between your sentences.
Smooth transitions between paragraphs and sections are also necessary to keep the reader moving along. Harsh transitions where there is no obvious link between adjacent paragraphs act as a roadblock.
If you can't smoothly link two paragraphs or section, consider splitting them via sub-headings. Or do what Malcolm Gladwell does and put three dashes between the end of a paragraph and the start of a new one.

Immediately write well, or first write an idea, a text block, bring it to its logical end, and then start editing?

In fact, first, you need to put all the clay on a conventional potter's wheel and then cut off the excess to create a vase or sculpt a sculpture. That is to write a novel.

My method, from past experience, is based on technical reports, I need to collect all the information, statistics, process, analyze, write a text block. Have a discussion. Test it. Record errors. Fix them. Enter the report. Give conclusions and write the result.

Using the same method for writing novels, on the one hand, I was convinced that the method still works, on the other, it is more energy-intensive. But on the other hand, it's better not to be tormented by doubts, not creating anything, just not waste time chattering, but write. Even though this is a truncated idea, although it is written clumsily, it is not quite smooth and beautiful, but this is already something you can work with! You can see from the side - your mistakes. Find out, does the idea even work? Is it interesting to readers? Is it worth writing at all in this genre?

So far I have written 7 stories. I can say for sure that writing about travel is clearly not worth it, there are not as many readers as there are subscribers. Wasting time. So I quickly finished this story.

It is just as bad to start writing a lot of stories and not one of them to finish.

You need to slowly complete all the stories or most and then start a new one.

But returning to the old topic, the main one, it seems to me to write the story first, even if it does not look very clear or beautiful in terms of the text block. And then do the rewriting of the novel. Cutting off repetitive moments, probably not needed, weak, not interesting. Leaving only the essence. Price from 2 to 4 cents per word. Checking 1300-1500 editing words can take 2 hours. This is a pro.

So editing in the pros is expensive, and editing in non-pros is a cat in a poke, not the fact that it will be correct and good. But the price is 200-300 dollars for 80,000 words.

So dear author, it's easier for you to learn English grammar yourself and edit your novel yourself.

Murakami: So you might not see how they built up to their debut novel. Authors can have 15-20 scrapped novels b4 they debut, and the public don't get to read a single one.

Murakami: But it also means that it's more like hit and miss.

Reili: True because they don't get the feedback from fans.

Murakami: They get limited feedback from an agent/editor who doesn't want to read their work.

Zenith: Yeah, but it surely is better than nothing.

Murakami: And they're left with a bunch of abstract and vague advice that they have no idea how to implement.

Reili: If they don't enjoy it, the feedback won't be as insightful.

Zenith: They can learn from their mistakes from reading their own works.

Zenith: If possible, from platforms.

Murakami: If they knew how to do that they'd fix it and publish it.

Reili: It would make the process easier if someone who enjoys the book to give them better feedback.

Zenith: It's called rewriting from scratch, and it takes a tonne of time if the author feels more interested in some other idea of his, he would do that.

Reili: I suppose so since the author being inspired will bring his book along.

VKBoy: If the ones giving review are professional editors, then they don't necessarily have to have read your work with immersion because their suggestions will still likely cover the basic flaws that amateurish writers usually make.

Reili: Point taken.

Zenith: Yeah.

Murakami: @VKBoy if they spot those errors they'll put down the manuscript after the first page

Reili: Then again, its a little bit like movie critics. They may hate the movie, but fans love it.

Murakami: And then send a reply saying, "Don't send in another manuscript until you learn how to write properly."

Zenith: Professionals in the said field prefer not taking risks. Especially in movies, but books, you can keep trying.

VKBoy: Well, if there are errors in the first page itself, that's a whole different thing, lol.

Murakami: No, but a good editor can tell the writing quality from just the first page even if you've crafted it perfectly, they can just tell that the rest will be shit.

Author's Notes

I'm sure you've read this a few times in the previous chapters, but I had been reading MTL chapters for the past few years. I usually read "Completed" stories, and most of them are around 2-4k chapters each. Of course, I read the translated chapters first. After I reach the latest translated chapter, I will immediately jump to *cough* Google Translate.

Yeah~ I know. Reading chapters through Google Translate was the most…epic mistake I did in the past. I've finished World Defying Dan God, Battle Through the Heavens uhh…and a few more novels using Google Translate.

In the later years, I discovered lnmtl.com, which gave me a better translation (at least the names of the characters are not written like Cloud Che instead of Yun Che (Against the Gods). 

To be perfectly honest, If I didn't start writing, I would have continued to read these machine translated chapters even now. Reading MTL works if English is not your first language.

This is something that those with English as their main language will scoff at. However, for those who just want to read. As in reading something without worrying about anything else, then they won't care even if it's a machine translated chapter. As long as they will be able to read the NEXT chapter, then it's all good.

This is also the reason why I admire translators. If not for them, these stories that we are not aware of will not be able to grace us with their presence. I would like to thank the translators of my favorite novels like Lord of Mysteries, Release that Witch, Against the Gods, Cultivation Chatgroup, Second Coming of Avarice, and so many other titles that I won't be able to list here.

To my beloved readers, if there will come a time when you feel like writing a story of your own and you're reading machine translated chapters, please stop now. I'm saying this for your own good. 

I understand how you feel. Believe me I do, but for the sake of the story you're going to write in the future, heed my advice. Stop now, while you still have the chance. Learning how to write from scratch with broken English is a painful process.

Then again, if you find an editor who is a masochist, consider yourself lucky. Let them clean up your mess for you, so you can focus on writing your story, and learn the art of writing while you write.

I've only recently gotten back to the groove and things will pick up from here on out. I've been editing Volume 1 chapters while also writing, outlining and editing Volume 2 chapters. That's why I've been taking my time, as well as not posting as much as I used to. 
To those who just started reading, I hope you stick around. I swear that the quality of my work will get better from now on. If you don't want to though, that's fine. Thank you for your time, I appreciate it a lot. Really, I do. If you do leave, please tell me what turned you off from the story. I want to know which parts of my writing can be improved, just, please be civil when you do. 
The rest of the chapters for this week, Tues - Sat, will be posted on Sunday. All at the same time. I'm sorry if I once again tweaked my schedule, but life has been... hard for a while now.
I won't get much into it but I'm losing motivation to live. So I want to go on a relaxing writing spree. I love writing, and that's the only thing that keeps me alive right now. But starting this novel meant posting everyday, because I don't want to let the loyal readers down. 
For me, daily posts consist of writing, editing and publishing the chapter in just an hour or less. I'm a graduating Civil Engineering student, I can only give so much free time to writing. This 'habit' really stops writing from being fun, because I lose my view of the story.
That's exactly what happened with Volume 1. If you are looking closely, you'd find that I wrote about 54 chapters plus 9 side story chapters (that I removed temporarily, sorry Rodrigo_Miyasaka). That means writing 63 chapters in the span of around a month. That's another novel's four months of work since most of my chapters then were averaging around 2300. Some around 3000+ while a few around 2000. That's more than a hundred and forty thousand words, which most original novels divide into at least a hundred chapters.
I'm not saying that I'm better than those authors. I'm absolutely NOT in the level where I can be proud enough of my novel to share it with my loved on-, I mean, relatives. This is my first novel, I make mistakes, feel regrets at decisions I made and even want to scrap everything and do it all over again. But I won't, because I want to finish my first novel. I want to know if I can do this right, If I can really be someone who writes web novels.
Now that we talked about how many words Volume 1 has, I want to just share that I just edited all those chapters recently. I rewrote, expanded and reformatted all those chapters. I also added four more chapters in Volume 1. There would have been more if I wasn't rushing it. 
Only reason Volume 1 didn't become 100 chapters was because I wanted to go back to focusing on writing Volume 2. Re-editing those in four days really got to me. It also stacked with my personal problems, so I just feel tired.
I've started exercising again, which is a good start to going back to normalcy. I used to weigh around 70 kg, which was lean for my age and height, but now I'm bordering on 100 kg. I want to go back to my old self, and bring back with it my motivation to live again.
After this Sunday, I'll see what I feel is better for me as a writer. I can, for sure, write daily chapters. There's proof for that. But if I feel that the quality of my work will be better by doing things another way, then I'll make that clear by then. Rest assured that I will be finishing this novel with no cheap, rushed ending.  The reason for that is because I love this novel. This novel is about me, and I want to share that with you guys.

Story will be updated on August 3, 2020. I'm having my last semester in college so I'll focus on that for a while. Also, a remake will be done so reading this version would still be worth it.

This story is something I had in mind for a long time now so many of the ideas and scenarios can be seen in my other works but they are only similar, not literal copies. Enjoy!)

I will continue writing this story, I will begin editing all my old chapters and then continue writing new ones.

Why I'm doing this? I really don't fucking remember my old story, also I'm writing a glossary for all the people so they can Identify which character is which and what kind of contract do they have.

I love this story, this is why I keep writing it.

Sorry for my long absence, not lame excuses. I just didn't feel like writing it.

But now I'm slowly writing it again, the edited chapters have a note at the bottom telling the date of the edited.

Idk if anyone still waits for new chapters but meh. Is my obligation to inform you.

This is a novel inspired by the original novel in this site called "Life Merchant" by YoonTaeTifYuFeiMin. 

I remade this novel keeping the realistic part and cutting the fictional elf/orc/monsters stuff since for me it seemed unnecessary.

This novel focus on the way Fergal slowly but cautiously gains power thanks to his new ability.
