"And so, Vermillion's Hellfires are busy dealing with Abgere. The Phoenix sent an envoy just to assure you that he will help you in the war but as it was decided before, the Ghost Nation will be the ones fighting."
Says the Volcano as he bows to The Reaper, delivering him the Phoenix's envoy.
Grisham: "That man never ceases to intrigue me with his actions. Regardless, for the time being, I will have to keep my curiosity to myself and focus on the war."
He says as he asks the envoy to leave the parliamentary room and turns towards his board of ministers, a body made up of 8 highly skilled Ghosts who assist The Reaper in any way he would need assistance. He asks them,
Grisham: "How are the masses taking the fact that the war is approaching?"
One of his ministers steps forward and answers him,
Minister: "They are taking it fairly well. There is certain anxiety growing within the masses but they seem to have built a good amount of faith in the Spectres and most do believe wholeheartedly that we would easily win in the war."
As he hears, The Reaper clicks his tongue.
Grisham: "That still sounds like the situation is worse than what we expected it to be."
Minister: "Yes, I am afraid the name of Bronzer, the strategist of the Vampire Kingdom, has reached a few ears and some Ghosts are starting to feel intimidated by all the hype surrounding his name."
Grisham: "Tsk! That guy again! Did Walter go around telling people about his 'meeting' with Bronzer or something?"
Irritatedly, Grisham asks so.
Minister: "Pardon me, sire, but if that would have happened, the situation would have been much worse. The reason his name has reached so many people seems to be because of the fact that the upper echelon of the Vampire Kingdom has given him full reins to do anything he wants, placing all their trust in him. People are starting to take that as a sign of how terrifying that man can be."
Grisham: "Hah!"
Sighing, Grisham says,
Grisham: ���If only they knew how much of a difference there really is when it comes to the Spectres' fighting ability and the Vampire Kingdom's fighting ability, they would realize that placing all the trust in that one man is not a sign of that man's ability but that of the Vampire Kingdom's desperation."
Minister: "Yes, sire, that may be so but you had chosen to not disclose too much information about these matters as thoughts related to war may corrupt their hue and decrease their chances of becoming Angels."
Grisham: "Yes, yes, I know."
Still troubled but realizing that there is no way around that problem, he says,
Grisham: "Do what you can to lessen their anxiety."
The minister bows and backs off to where he was originally standing. Grisham then calls forth not another one of his ministers but a different Ghost.
Grisham: "Spectre Dyne, please step forward!"
Dyne, who had only been listening from the sidelines up until then, steps forward and bows down to The Reaper.
Grisham: "I have a mission for the Spectres."
Dyne stays quiet with his head bowed, asking Grisham to continue.
Grisham: "You will need to take all the Spectres aside from the ones assigned to guarding our nation on this mission."
Dyne still stays quiet.
Grisham: "Half of you will go to Kesley and meet with the Phoenix. There, you are to confront him about the few soldiers he promised he'd send us. The other half will go to whatever holes the Dragons have holed themselves in and ask them to come to the Ghost Nation as well."
And the Spectre still stays quiet.
Grisham: "The objective of your mission basically is to bring all the direct help we were promised so that the Ghosts who are getting anxious right now can ease their minds upon seeing an even stronger force than what we have now."
And still, Spectre Dyne does not speak. Slightly troubled by this, Grisham asks,
Grisham: "Is there a reason you are so quiet, Dyne?"
Hearing the question directed at him, the Spectre pulls up his head to look directly at The Reaper as he answers.
Dyne: "If you send us there right now, you realize what could happen, don't you?"
Grisham sighs,
Grisham: "Things could go awry and the Vampire Kingdom could use the chance to strike."
Dyne: "It will basically be the first big battle in the war that everyone's going so crazy about."
Grisham: "Hah! Certainly a large possibility, but why else do you think I am asking you to take all the Spectres that you can."
Dyne: "So, knowing that it might be a trap, you are sending your men down there regardless?"
Grisham: "Ha!"
With a mocking gesture, Grisham corrects Dyne's words,
Grisham: "Knowing that it might be a trap, I am sending my men who are capable enough to break through the trap and finish this all right then and there."
Dyne, merely sighing with no emotions, says,
Dyne: "I see. We will set off as soon as we can."
Grisham nods with a smirk.

Having searched the entire house, the three Hellfires meet back up at the entrance.
Vaika: "Did anyone find anything useful?"
Akio: "If useful means a bunch of things that show that Ethan knew we will be here and him flexing on us because of that, then yeah."
Vaika: "Hah! I see. What about you, Halogen?"
Halogen just shakes his head in denial with a pained smile on his face.
The three Hellfires had only found books with markings on them, directions written on walls that led to nowhere, paintings hung on walls that meant nothing and kept confusing them, and such things. In other words, they had only found things that mocked them. There was not a single clue as to where Ethan and the rest had gone or any shred of information on Abgere.
Akio: "If this keeps on, Laurie, Chang and Ross are gonna find him before we do."
Vaika: "If this man keeps mocking us as he has through everything in this house, those three reaching there before us will be the least of our worries."
Knowing that the three of them are more powerful than the other three Hellfires who are on the job, losing to them and having to acknowledge those three as the Phoenix would be humiliating enough. But, if things continue to go on as they have, even if they win this little race and become Phoenix themselves, Ethan would have mocked them enough to turn them into jokes that no one in Vermillion would actually respect.
It's safe to say that things aren't going well for the three of them.
Halogen: "So, what do you two think we should do now?"
Akio: "I don't know, find a Seer or something?"
Vaika: "I wish I knew a Seer too but that's too unrealistic. Finding seers is basically equivalent to scouring the entire Earth. If you don't know a Seer, never rely on luck or something else hoping to find one when you need to."
Akio: "Yeah, yeah, I know."
Tired from dealing with constant mocking by a man who isn't even there, Akio stretched his arms and legs and asks Halogen,
Akio: "You are good at asshole-y stuff, right? What do you think we should do?"
Halogen awkwardly smiles and answers,
Halogen: "Well, if nothing else works, use the very fact that we are Psychics."
Akio: "...?"
Vaika: "...?"
Halogen: "Our intuition is superior to any other species. We could just follow the path that we feel is right and it could definitely lead us to the place we want to go."
The other two sigh.
Akio: "Sure, that's an option. But we are competing with other Psychics with the same level of intuition as us. You really think we can win if we let our intuitions fight it out?"
Halogen: "That will be dependent on our luck."
With a smile, the priest says so. And while the uncertainty with this method is obvious, left without any leads, this does seem to be the best thing to rely on for the three of them.
As such, they all collectively and at the same time, sigh in exasperation.

Professor Grisham continued telling them the story he knew about the town during the old civilization that was found here in Stygian Forest.
The town didn't honor the god and did not offer him sacrifices, which was why the god destroyed the gong because of his anger.
With that, they were left with no choice to make a great sacrifice in order to appease the god and make a new gong in his honor.
They have talked to the god and the god told them that in order for them to do that, the chieftain should make an unconditional sacrifice of sacrificing his daughter to be the gong that they are going to use, offering her life to the god as the great sacrifice as well.
"Damn!"
Aranea could not help but exclaim when she heard that part of the story.
"That is something a father could not take—giving their child just to gain something?"
Professor Grisham and the others couldn't agree more. All of them nodded, Elenea, sighing as she voiced out what she thought as well.
"Of course, as a parent, the chieftain didn't want to, no? He was in a dilemma."
"You're right," Professor Grisham replied, "But then, with the problem of the town they were facing such as draught, how could he save his people?"
"So, what did the daughter do? Does she know about this?" Leonel asked, Professor Grisham, nodding at the Water Familiar's question to give him an answer.
"Yes, indeed she knew about it."
"What?" Zann scoffed, "If she knew, then what was decided? Don't tell me the father forced her?"
Professor Grisham shook his head, "Actually, it was the daughter who forced her father to go along with the demands of the god."
"What?"
The twins reacted in unison. With all of them knowing that it was the daughter who agreed with the demands of the god, how could the father react to this?
"Of course, the father was heartbroken upon seeing how willing his daughter was of sacrificing her life for the people of their town. She was the only child he has. With his wife gone due to sickness, he is bound to lose his daughter, too?
"Yes, the father also blamed himself. If not for his pride, if not for deciding not to give anything to the god, this wouldn't have happened in the first place."
Zann furrowed his brows and spoke, "But if the daughter decided upon this, why? I mean… what could have driven her to make such a decision of giving her life for the people whom she doesn't even know?"
Professor Grisham smiled, already having an answer to Zann's question.
"You see, the daughter of the chieftain had great empathy and love for the people in town. It is a cliché story you usually hear in legends and folktales, but it is true. People who unconditionally give themselves for the welfare of everyone still exist."
Aranea scoffed, rolling her eyes at the same time.
"I'm sorry, but such martyrdom. I couldn't even."
Zann nodded, agreeing with what Aranea had said. 
The other two, Leonel and Elenea, even though they did not speak about their opinions, thought the same. 
They thought that the daughter's decision was indeed selfless—one thing that is rare to see even in the reality they have now.
"So, there… you get the picture," Professor Grisham said, sighing. "In order to make the gong, they went to the deepest depths of the earth—inside a volcano. They melted pure gold with its lava's help, the daughter jumping in afterwards to be one with the forming gong."
"That's morbid!" Elenea scrunched her nose, "Didn't the father do something to stop her daughter? Isn't it unbearable for him to see that!?"
Aranea blinked her eyes a few times. Knowing her sister, it was rare of her to see her this surprised and animated.
"Well," Professor Grisham started, getting everyone's attention. "Apparently, the father could not stop the determination of his daughter. He cried, of course, but the sacrifice of his daughter helped the people of their town survive the draught."
"Outrageous!" Even Leonel couldn't help but react. "The gods must've been so crazy—thinking this way! They clearly control the humans' emotions—almost toying with them just to get what they want just because they are powerful?"
Zann's hands at the side balled into tight fists. He didn't always agree with Leonel, but with what he said, he had to admit that now, he does.
He even felt rage against that god—whoever that is.
"So, that's it? That's the whole story?" Aranea asked, Professor Grisham, nodding. "Rather than the story being sad, it's actually irksome. They could have done another way—the god should've had more mercy on their poor souls."
"Right!" Elenea almost shouted, surprising even the two familiars.
Her liveliness right now is obviously a contrast of her calm demeanor…
Professor Grisham could not help but chuckle. He shook his head as he shrugged, voicing out his opinions as well.
"Well, that's how it went in the old civilization and this was the story that we are told. However, there is one thing that got my curiosity more," he said and added, piquing the curiosity of the four.
The twins cocked their heads to the side and spoke in unison, "What is it?"
"You see," Professor Grisham started, "In the story, some claimed that there was one man who was willing to die for her so he could save her life. However, the woman was smart enough to deceive him, making him know too late that she had already offered her life for the people."
"Huh?" Zann raised a brow in consternation. "If he was willing to die for her, why couldn't the daughter let him?"
"It's simple," Professor Grisham said, a wide grin appearing on his face. "It's love."
"Eww…"
Leonel and Elenea laughed out loud when they heard and saw Aranea and Zann have the same reaction. Even Professor Grisham laughed out loud, continuing to tell them what he knows about the daughter and the man.
"They also claim that when the man knew she was already dead, he stayed behind, vowing to never leave the gong until he could join her."


"Wh-who the hell are you and why are you kissing me!?"

With Aranea backing away as she hid her lips with her forearm, the blue-haired man who came out of nowhere approached her, making Aranea stand up abruptly but was suddenly stopped when he knelt down right in front of her. 

"Where is my phone!? Why did you turn into a human being? Why did you kiss me!?"

Ignoring her series of questions, the man held her right hand then he kissed the back of her palm, introducing himself to her—everyone flabbergasted with what he said.

"My name is Leonel. I am your loyal familiar that you have summoned, Aranea Griffin."

Baron woke up the next morning although he had managed not to take a blow or a kick yesterday he still looked as he was the day before yesterday he got dressed in his normal black gloves black suit and black sunglasses people outside will often think he was going for a funeral while some argued about the fact that he was going for a funeral.

Would he be going for a funeral everyday a man in the nearby coffee shop argued but baron although had heard the countless number of time but paid no attention his main aim was to find out who kidnapped him and have his revenge he decided the first person he was going to question was his boss but he would do it in a way that his boss would not know that he was questioning him.

When he arrived at the office  instead of the creepy smile he was greeted by confused faces and when he proceeded to meet his boss he saw grisham sitting in his normal chair grisham had noticed him and tried to avoid direct eye contact baron went over to grishams table lifted him up with the collar of his shirt and gave him a slap he wasn't going to forget grisham knew he deserved it and baron left his shirt and whispered in his ear il come back for you.

Everyone else that saw what happened could not do anything or move so they stayed back watching grisham immediately stood up and left the building meanwhile baron was proceeding to the boss's office and when he entered he saw the same confused face of everyone else outside the building on his boss's face the boss the said wow baron I didn't know you will survive because the people that bear agent 55 usually die between a day or two you are really brave.

Thanks for the compliment sir but sir can I ask u one question sure go ahead the boss said sir do u perhaps know why those people where dying apart from the fact that they were all bearing agent 55 the boss with a nervous voice said I don't know another reason why do u ask nevermind sir I just thought of investigating the case baron said as he left the boss's office he saw grisham leaving the building and he immediately followed carefully not allowing grisham to know that he was being followed he trailed grisham unti finally he saw where he was going too grisham stopped at a first food restaurant.

Baron however did not want to spoil his meal so he waited let him finish then he was going to question him about the setup and all other incident that followed the previous day so he sat on the park next to the restaurant and waited when he saw grisham he decided to follow him and stop him we're he saw that they were less people he followed until grisham took a short cut leading to the next alley he then decided it was his chance to take him on just as grisham felt someone was chasing him he turned back and saw baron in the air ready to pounce on him like a puma who is in search for food grisham who also knew a thing or two on fighting immediately moved out of the way cancelling barons strike.

"Corine!"
I look past my shoulder and see Mina rushing towards me. She is one of the nerds in our Literature class. Wearing thick glasses and braces, she likes enhancing it with her long bangs and curly hair. Not to mention the pimples that make it worse.
"You forgot this." She hands me my Literature book while she's catching her breath.
"Thanks!" I take it and put it in my bag.
She is the only person I am talking to in class. She is a certified bookaholic and an introvert too. She is harmless.
"No worries! See you at 3 pm!" She cheerfully says and waves at me.
I just stare at her before she turns to the next corridor.


It has been nine years since I started using the name 'Corine Rodriguez'. Nine years ago when I began to live with a different identity and felt like I was always walking on thin ice. I have to be careful. For me not to repeat all those nightmares from the past, I must be very cautious and always on guard.
I must not attract attention from anyone. So I try to live normally as any other teenagers should do. Particularly, as the unknown and common student that you could meet. I never participated in any competitions or clubs that might put me in a spotlight. I don't even want to be included in the Dean's list. I make sure that I maintain all the required grades in the scholarship that I applied to. And above all, I make sure that I wouldn't be a perfect subject for bullying. I might be the most uninteresting person you would know but not that weak.
I created a low profile just to avoid complications and unnecessary drama.
After having lunch, I go to my favorite spot-- the library. I look for another novel by John Grisham. I decide to read The Pelican Brief.
I sit in the most secluded corner of the room. I am satisfied to find the table empty. I begin to read and forget the whole world.
I love reading books especially novels with the genre of a suspense thriller or courtroom drama. It makes me think logically and at the same time creatively. I do read some romantic and drama stories too. But I am also a fan of horror or gothic stories especially written by Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. I find it funny realizing how I like reading stories with scary plots or themes although my life itself is a tragic one. Maybe because I know that books have their endings. While on my part, the future is still unknown, and the only way to end life... is death.
That may be the sweetest thing to happen. But I know I have to live. That is the promise I made to them... a vow that I would do everything to keep myself alive until I have finally fulfilled my dream and goal. Before I face death, I have to tell the world. I have to let them know my story. Our story.
And the only way to do that is to become a writer.
I have a long way to go, though.


I am so engrossed in the book that I haven't noticed a boy who sits in front of me.


"Excuse me..."
I look over my book and see a guy smiling shyly at me. He is wearing eyeglasses but for some reason, it makes him look so attractive. He has this aura that you would definitely throw a second glance at him when he passes by.
I just stare at him with a poker face. I hate it when someone is interrupting me while I am reading. And I really hate it when someone is trying to talk to me. Especially a stranger.
"I just want to ask if there's still a John Grisham book available aside from the one you're reading?" he asks kindly.
"I don't know. But I could give this to you so you can read it," my answer.
I hand him the book and begin to gather my things and put them in my bag.
"No... it's okay. I will just look for another one I guess." he apologetically says.
"No, it's fine. I am actually planning to go anyway. You can have it now." I say before I walk away without waiting for his reply.
This is my normal reaction. I am not mad or angry. But I am annoyed. I am not used to talking to anyone I don't know. Or rather, I really don't want to talk at all... to anyone.
I am very much aware of my classmates' thoughts about me. I hear it from their hushed conversations about how cold and serious I am. They even say that all they know about me is being an emotionless girl and having a deadpanned face. That I am just like an air occupying that chair whenever I am there. They don't know any information like where I am staying, what kind of family I have, what food I like, or what color I fancy the most. They don't know me at all. Which is basically true.
They even ask Mina if I could actually smile since she is the only person I could talk to with more than ten words. I could sense how awkward they are when they're trying to communicate with me. I could sense their fear. Fear of not knowing how to deal with me.
Sometimes, I feel so sorry for them. I just couldn't explain that I am not born to socialize with others and that it is best to leave me alone. It is for their own good.
As for the smile... yes, I know how to smile. Before. Nine years ago, I knew how to laugh too. But that was all in the past. I don't have the right to laugh now. Or even smile.
All I could think of is to survive each day and keep moving forward.
At nineteen years of existence, l have learned that life is not just rainbows and candies. Life has offered me the darkest path and tunnels to travel to.
Death has always been there to fetch me. But I refuse to succumb to its shadows.
Because dying now means failing them.... it means that I failed my family. I failed to get the justice that serves them.
Dying now is a luxury I could not afford.

Then, I kept on bouncing between foster homes. By the time I was 17 I ran away and made a living on my own. I had very few friends, now estranged. But he was definitely not one of them.

"I haven't seen you ever in my life. You probably got the wrong person, dude," I said.
"No, Desmond," he pulled out a silver chain with the initial 'S' on it. 
Immediately flashes of memory came back to me. I saw myself in high school, being ridiculed and got pushed into a locker by a tall guy. Then, someone held out his hand to me, helping me up. The boy had a choker with the initial 'S' in it. My brain hurt, as tried to picture the guy's face. Then I saw it.
It was the man, of course, the younger version of him, but one would not mistake the fine eyelashes and the handsome smile. "Hey, Desmond,".
Then the memory ended.
...
"I..I am sorry, I feel like I should have remembered you, why can't I??"
"Its okay, Desmond. It was a long time ago. Ooh, you got some coffee on your lips," 
before I reacted, he stood up, his girl watched, as he wiped my mouth with his handkerchief.
I pushed him away, "what the heck, dude, just pass me some tissue or something!". I don't know why, but I felt like something was a bit off. 
"Sorry, sorry,"he laughed, as he went back to his seat. Then he did something I never saw anyone doing.
He sniffed his handkerchief, like one was admiring the aroma of a perfume.
The girl stared at him, shocked. "E, what the f..".
"Don't speak," he put his finger to his lips.
"Dude, you are creepy as shit."
"Desmond, you stalked a girl to her house. You are a damn psycho yourself. We are the same," he shrugged.
"I am not the one sniffing someone's b-breath here,"I tried to speak, but the sight of him doing what he did still shocked me.
He laughed and laughed.
The girl tried to get up, but he pulled her down her seat.
"Don't touch her!" I yelled.
"I will do more than that if you don't behave, love, "he smiled menacingly.
I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to not speak any curse words, fearing he would hurt anyone else.
"So.. let's get to the story. Of  romeo and juliet. But in this case..Romeo and Jason, maybe,"he pulled a cigarette and lit it with a lighter.
I waited as he smoked and released tiny puffs of cloud into the air.
"I never know you back then, until when I was 16. That was the first time I met you and got to the same class as you. I was the new hot guy, y'know?  I was always with friends, surrounded with fake ass people. then I saw you. You were being pushed into the locker by Skeppy, that tall quarterback dude. So I helped you up, at first I thought nothing of it. Then , you responded by just saying, 'Okay, thanks,' and just stormed off. No affection, no  nothing. I felt like that was the first time I was treated 'normal' by another student without them fawning over me. I immediately vowed to myself to find you, maybe get to know you. Found your sorry lonely ass in the library one Friday, and decided to sit next to you. We talked about John Green. John Grisham. all the writers you loved so much. I may or may not have pretended to like a few authors just so I could win you over, but that's it.  Then you decided I am not so bad after all, we met at library from time to time, then started going to cafeteria together. I pissed off my friends by choosing to sit next to you instead and inviting you to sit with us."

He continued," I  even came to hang out with you at your foster home, but your foster dad, Grahams didn't like me. Said I was a bad influence because I invite you to go out and play football all the time. ".
He put his left hand under his chin as he looked at me , straight in the eye," He started forbidding me from seeing you. One day..I just can't take it anymore. I remember the day before the class trip you told me he wanted you guys to move to Austin, Texas. I just can't bear having no real friends, no one that I can be myself around. So I advised you to come to me and just run away. I mean, if I can't have you, he couldn't, too. You hung out in my shed and I treated you to all sorts of new stuff, gaming consoles, presents."

"Your shed??" I exclaimed, "So I did not run away that far?".
"you couldn't," he rubbed his nose, giggling.
"Alas, old man Grahams  had a heart attack and died the next day and I had to let you go before people find out. I don't know what happened to you next, but.." he put his hands over his face. Then, I realized he was sobbing.
"I just missed you so much, Desmond. You have no idea,"
he removed his hands from his face, smoke filled the air. I coughed.


"And now, you are here, and you will not leave me, "he smiled.
I cleared my throat and forced my voice out,
"listen, dude. I only mildly remembered what you just said, but a lot of it is just glimmers to me. Why don't you let the girl go, I go back and think this through?".
His smile disappeared. 

"Too late, Desmond, you drank it,".

Then, I looked down at the coffee on the table. I finally noticed miniature white powders floating on the surface of the coffee. My head started spinning and my vision became blurry. The last thing I remembered was the strange man in front of me smiling before the world turned dark.

I liked this girl.
She's amazing and me and her had so much in common.
She likes anime and is not like other mindless freaks who goes through life without even thinking about anything important.
She was the girl I was waiting for.
Oh..and by the way, I never actually  see her face.

Eden’s POV:
I should be happy. I’m innocent and Mr Grisham knows it.
Now that Stacey has left, neither of us say anything. He should be apologising. He should be giving Stacey the same treatment he gave me. Not that I want Stacey to be fired. I really don’t. The double standard just upsets me.
He didn’t even hesitate to believe her. He took her word for it without a second thought. Even though they’ve worked together for a few years now, it still hurts. He wasn’t even willing to give me the chance to explain myself and yet he outright refused her resignation even when he knew she was at fault.
I wait for him to say something. Anything at all. Even if it’s just one word would be better than this. But he doesn’t and I’m disappointed.
He wasn’t kidding. This is a waste of time. As confidently as I can, I stride towards the door.
“Where are you going?”
“Home,” I reply.
“What? Why?” He at least has the good grace to look awkward.
“You told me to leave.”
“Yeah but…”
“But what?” I ask. “I’m suspended.”
“Obviously, that’s no longer relevant.”
“Obviously?” I almost laugh. “You’re clearly very busy; I’ll let you get back to work.”
“Eden, you don’t need to leave.”
“Until my suspension is officially lifted, yes I do.”
“Eden,” he says, moving towards me, “I’m sorry.”
His apology is almost ten minutes too late. It’s pretty much meaningless. An afterthought. 
If I stay here, I’m going to say something I will probably regret. I’m more tempted than I should be to just give him my resignation. Unlike Stacey’s, he’d probably accept mine.
“Have a good day, Mr Grisham,” I say.
“Stop right there,” he says. “You’re not seriously going home?”
I consider telling him that I am indeed going home. He should be grateful I’m not resigning. Truth is, if my grandma wasn’t Eliza Clancy I’d have resigned on Friday.
As angry as I still feel, I’m not sure I can actually go. After what’s happened, I can only imagine how hard the team outside this office are having to work. Of course, I want to help them, but I’m also fuming with Noah.
“You better email HR then,” I say tersely before leaving his office.
He follows me out. “Does that mean you’re staying?”
I force a smile onto my face as I immediately feel everyone’s eyes on me. They’re not even trying to hide the fact that they’re looking at me.
Stacey comes up to me, taking my hand in hers.
“You’re not leaving, are you?” she asks, her eyes fearful.
“No. I’m not leaving,” I say softly.
“Oh good. I was so worried,” she says. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault,” I tell her, squeezing her hands. “Accidents happen.”
The others gather around me, expressing their concern. They don’t want me to leave. I repeat that I’m not going and gradually everyone begins to settle back down again.
“Come with us for lunch?” Rob offers.
“That’s ages away,” Stacey chastises him.
“No. It’s not,” Rob replies defensively. 
Glancing at my watch, I realise he’s right. I hadn’t rushed to come in early this morning seeing as how I was suspended but I’m still surprised to realise that it’s almost noon.
“Eden, it’s your pick,” Rob says, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. “We’ll make the boss pay since he was so mean to you.”
“Hey!” Noah grumbles.
“It’s alright. I’m not hungry. You should all go without me.”
The last thing I want is for Noah Grisham to buy me lunch but I can’t tell them that. Noah looks like he wants to say something but he keeps quiet as he gives Rob his card.
“Bring me something back, please,” he requests before making his way back into his office.
“Please come with us,” Stacey asks me. “Please.”
Knowing that Noah isn’t going, I’m tempted. I certainly don’t want to be the only one in the department with him. They’re all looking at me expectantly and I don’t want to refuse them.
“Alright then,” I say, giving in, falling into step with them.
“But I’m paying for myself,” I say almost as an afterthought, looking back at the door to Noah’s office.
"Why?" Stacey laughs. "No one refuses a free meal."
I can't say I agree. The way I see it, my proud is worth far more than the cost of my lunch.
