It's been two days since i got the most painful experience in my life, I've been absent in school for two days, after that embarrassing incident that caused by a devil who i thought was an angel, she is the prettiest girl that i have ever seen, she is a tall girl with black hair, brown eyes that shines brighter than diamond, smooth brown skin, and she has the cutest smile in the earth's crust. I have a secret crush on her since the 8th grade, from the first time i saw her i told myself that she is the one i want to grow up with, from that day i wrote poems that shows how much i like her, but I can't give it to her because im too afraid to do so...

Two years have passed, we're on the 10th grade, i decided that i will confess my love to her ofcourse by the use of the words that i wrote on a piece of paper, a poem, a poem with my heart and emotion with it, a poem that can make her mine, even if it is late at night i tried to write the poem that will change my life in that poem i wrote everything she has to know, i finished writing that poem at 3:00 am in the morning, i feel so sleepy but I cannot sleep, thinking that if she loved this poem i will give her all the poems that i wrote for her from the first time i saw her on 8th grade, the time passed and I didn't noticed that i fell asleep already i am smiling while snoring feeling excited for what will happen this morning

A loud noise from the alarm of my phone has woken me, with excitement, i fixed my bed, brush my teeth, eat my breakfast, and wait for school bus. The feeling of excitement and nervousness is flowing in my blood, fear can be seen in my eyes, i am afraid of what will be her reaction, i am not sure if i can do this. The bus has arrived, i stood up and told myself that im gonna do this no matter what happen.

The bus arrived at school, i walk down and enter the school gate, upon entering i saw her standing in front of her classroom, then fear has swalloed me from inside, i can't give this paper to her, i can't tell her how i feel, i can't tell her that i am already inlove with her. Because of that fear i ran towards the grassfield, in this school that grassfield is my stress and pain reliever, if i have problems, i walk around the grassfield to have time and for my self. if i am inpired, you can find me there, writing poems for the love of my life.

While sitting on the grassfield, i heard the ringing bell. It is time to enter the classroom and listen to the lectures of my teacher, the morning passed and i missed the chance to confess my love, "it's okay" i told myself, "i still have a lot of time, on lunch time i will definitely give her this paper"...

Lunch time, i went to the school canteed to buy my lunch, i brought two piece of fried chicken and a cup of rice for luch, after eating i saw this beautiful girl entering the door of school canteen. I walked towards her, gave her my poem on a piece of paper, and told her "i made this poem for you, i hope you like it" then with her left hand she took my poem, read the title, smile, and shouted..."EVERYONE, LISTEN, THIS GUY WROTE A POEM FOR ME, LET ME READ THIS FOR YOU GUYS" then she red my poem loudly inside the school canteen, with other students listening

After that line, all the students in the canteen laughed hard, she didn't finish reading my poem, she laughed at me "do you really think someone like me would love you back, have you ever looked yourself on the mirror? How can i love you if you're not even that cute..."
She continues to talk while laughing but I didn't hear everything maybe because the noise from other students are too loud, or i just don't want to hear what she is saying,

Because of embarrassment i left the shool, return home, cry, and for two whole days I didn't attend my class, i make muself busy by burning every poems that i wrote for her, while collecting all that poems i realized that it is already eight notebooks, filled with foolish feelings and emotions, i watched those notebooks to turn to dust with my emotions for that evil girl...

Today my life will continue, everyone in the school knows who i am, not by my name, but by the embarrassment that that girl brought me, while walking to my classroom everyone looks at me, laugh at me, and killing me inside

A guy who loves to write poems got rejected by the love of his life, from that day, he only make sad poems that can bring heart ache to his readers

In the hottest day that I ever experienced I was walking with only frien while thinking about myself 

All the time fooling around never thinking about the past 

When we parted ways I passed by the park and what I see make me think

And since that day I started thinking 'To be with such a hot girl I need to be a hot guy'

We both walked to the glass together as we followed the woman, she took us to a class and the chairs were separated from one another, but we all sat down individually as our seats wear already given to us, so we sat down on our schools name and so everyone went to seat in their different seats.

"Good day everyone, nice job, so you have thirty minutes to write a poem, it should be about life or something related to it, are you ready?" she asked the hall

"Yes ma" the hall screamed and she left

"Begin" a woman said as she rings a bell that was on her hands

I started writing my poem but there was nothing coming out of my head, I quickly wrote the nonsense I thought was poetry and regretted coming to the competition, theory minutes was over and the woman rang her bell they took us into the stadium where the competition was held, and they called us to perform our poetry one by one in front of a huge crowd and some judges.

"Christiana" they called my name and the whole hall went on fire clapping, I saw the last student, so maybe they expected better from me since they have heard wonderful and remarkable poems, I stood up and went to the stadium, I adjusted my glasses and collected the microphone as I made sure the paper was rightly placed.

"Good day ladies and gentle men, my name is Christiana Maybelle Joseph, and the title of my poem is life without suffering" I said as I took a deep breath in before I proceeded 

I began to recite the poem from the paper and the hall was quite "What is life without suffering?" The therapist asks a ten-year-old girl two weeks after the accident,
The accident that took her family alive,
The accident that came too soon,
The accident that took all her family to heaven while it left her behind,
The accident that tour her in halves,
The accident that gave her this wheelchair as a surprise, 
The accident that made her paralyzed,
The accident that denied her of her basic rights,
The right to be happy,
The right to have a family.

"What is life without suffering?" The therapist asked again but this time in a more relaxing tone,
This time she was calmer and sweeter to the girl who hasn't even gotten to sixteen yet,
To the girl who can't even go back to her school yet,
The therapist said to the ten year of girl whose mother would not be there when her period starts,
To this ten-year-old girl that her mother won't be there on her weeding night.

"What is life without suffering?" The therapist asked again in a more anxious tone,
She asked as if her mother wasn't alive,
She asked as if she has ever been in pains before,
The therapist asked as if she was not there for the money,
She asked as if she did not cry the night of her last break up,
She asked as if she did not spend the last Christmas with her family,
As if her mother was not going to attend her weeding.

"What is life without suffering?" The therapist asked again and again and again,
And each time the room was more quit than the last,
She repeats her self and now her words were like music to this poor ten-year-old girl's ears,
Her words were like alcohol that you need not want,
Her words were like prayers for the dead family members,
Her words was like a headache that would not go away,
Her words were like salt that was being rubbed on a fresh wound,
Her words were the knife that slit this ten-year-old girl's heart in halves,
Her words were like rain in summer it was a good thing, but it was not enough for the plants,
Her words were like bullets For each one of this poor ten-year-old girls dead family member,
like there were not dead in the first place.

"What is life without suffering?" The therapist asked the ten-year-old girl again,
"For the last time" the therapist said,

At the perfect time she took her pen out as she wanted to label the poor girl crazy,
This time she was sure of her diagnosis,
After five hours of therapy today,
Each one for a stanza I made,
the poor ten-year-old girl finally said as she wheeled her chair out, 
"What is life with experience and suffering if we are still going to make the same mistakes?" The poor ten-year-old girl said,
As she left a big question in the therapist's head.

Thank you " I said as I finished reciting the poem the hall was loud, and I believed they loved the nonsense I wrote.

It was only seconds after I performed that the judges concluded the scores, so one of them took to the mic, they announced that only the five best would be called and awarded after hours and hours of talk he began to call the scores.

"The fifty position goes to khadija" she came they gave her gifts and she went back to her seat

"Fourth to Gabriel" he did the same

"Third to Annabel" she also did the same

"Second to." He paused.

"Second to Christiana" he said as the crowd went wild as they clapped for me, I also went and collected my gift

"First to chinsom" the crowd even went more wild as they screamed and clapped for her.

She won a whooping sun 1 million naira, I won 90 thousand naira, and the third position won 70 thousand naira, the fourth won 50 thousand naira, and the fifth won 30 thousand naira but there were other small hits attached.

The day finally got to an end as we left the venue and the bus took me home directly.

"I HAVE GOT A GREAT IDEA!" 

Once again Sean has entered almost late screaming about another hit game he has come up with for us. What'll it be this time? Chess? Some sort of card game? Maybe something involving physical movement and getting tied up in a knot. Perhaps we plan to summon some sort of demon and serve him for the rest of our lives. Maybe we need to collect six stones? The possibilities are endless.

"Let's have a competition!"

"Say what it is first, then we can say if we are in or not."

"Writing competition!" 

A writing competition? That just sounds like a way to make this any more confusing than it already is. Writing inside writing, talk about meta.

"Sure." It's only writing, how hard can it be.

"I'm also in. I already know what I shall write about." Ethan seemed pumped and ready to go. Hopefully, he loses. Not to be harsh but I hope I win this.

"Are we going to have a theme?" I asked. I want us to all be on equal footing.

"Nope, Go for whatever you want. As long as it is less than 500 words it is ok. Let's say, we have 10 minutes and then we read them all out loud."

Got it, Seemed fair. I'm pumped for once. Let's do this! Except. What do I write about.

Time went by so quickly. They were both writing for the whole 10 minutes, crossing out tons of lines whilst I sat in my seat thinking for the whole time. I guess I'll have to improvise, once I hear both of their stories I'll think of something.

"Ok, who wants to go first?" Ethan asked.

"I shall as it was my idea." Sean was confident as usual. I hope it is bad.

"I call it, The Little Boy who Wished."
What a great title. I didn't know we needed a title. I better come up with something.

"One day, there was a young child. He sat at home every day whilst his mother cleaned and his dad worked. He always dreamed of being something bigger but he never knew what. The boy always enjoyed watching TV and letting his imagination run wild. He would often get bullied by the kids at school for standing out and being too active, but he just wanted to join in with the rest. One day he comes home to his find his mother laying on the floor passed out. The boy runs up to her, screaming and crying, unsure of what to do. The mother tells the boy not to worry. As everything will be ok. In her last breath, she tells the boy that she wishes for him to grow up and become a footballer. The boy shocked that his mother had just died in front of him takes her advice and becomes a footballer. The end!"

What a touching story. I'm not sure I fully understood it but Ethan is crying so he clearly understood something.

"Ok." Ethan said wiping away the tears. "I shall go next."
"Hehe. I'm a little nervous." Ethan's face was annoying me. He hadn't even started reading but he already looked as if he had won. Whatever he was about to read is probably going to be cringy.

"I call it, Forbidden Love."

Ok, this is going to be stupid.

"A boy lived in isolation by a dock.
Before him, appeared a goddess, unlike anything he had ever seen.
She stumbled along in rough clothes and socks.
Wanting to explore a place she had never been.

The boy approached her with a smile.
Conversation started and laughter shortly followed.
They spent some time together to make it worthwhile.
But she had to depart and the boy was now hollowed.

The next day he noticed the girl
Across the dock with someone new.
He watched from afar looking at a pearl.
Who smiled brighter than yesterday, he knew it was true.

He left eventually to which he thought was smart.
He had watched for hours, his heart felt torn.
He couldn't understand the feeling inside his heart.
But by the end of it, he wished he had never been born.

I-I don't know what to say. Compared to Sean, this is something else. not only did he decide to do a poem but both me and Sean are in tears. I was expecting something funny that I could insult him with but now I'm choking on my tears. The whole class was listening to him and gave him a standing ovation. The teacher was ready to resign and give her job to Ethan as he was clearly the man for the job.

How can I compete with that? I should have gone first. If I had known Ethan was doing a poem I would have gone first or at least made Ethan go last. Now anything I do will suck in comparison.

One day there was a child who was abandoned by his loved ones. He survived on his own for many years. He made himself breakfast. Went to school. Studied. Everything he did by himself.
To his class, he was something perfect. He was seen as an inspiration who everyone should look up to. 
But on the inside that isn't true. Every night the child stays up till 4AM wishing he would fall asleep. Wishing the pressure would leave him. 
As school exams approached he kept up his act. He worked his hardest and made sure no one worried about him. But back at home, he was studying for hours. Overworking himself every night just to make sure he passed.
He cries himself to sleep from the stress that had taken over him. Entering the only place he felt safe; inside his dreams.
He wished to sleep every night and live life easier than his own. He wanted to be someone better and greater and to live in a more interesting place. He found himself sleeping in on the weekends to escape his life which quickly turned into him sleeping in on school nights.
He worked nonstop until the sun rose and slept for 12 hours skipping lessons he once adored. Just to escape this world. The Exams came and he showed up on time. Having not slept the night before his mind wanders. He continues the stories he created in his head, ones of where he is a superhero, a life better than his own.
The results came out and his scores had dropped. The teachers and students worried but there was nothing they could do. There was nothing he could do. He wanted to live a better life. But he didn't realise that this was the life he would miss."

"Well. Ok then. That's depressing." 

"Sorry. I didn't know what to write so I kinda just wrote whatever popped into my head."

"Well, one suggestion. Don't ever think again. Just don't. Keep your thoughts to yourself and don't think again, please?"

What was wrong with him? His love poem was just as sad. He isn't falling anyone we all know who his poem was about.

"So who won?"

They were all pretty good. I liked Sean's surprise plot twist and suddenly killing off the mother character but Ethan's poem got some emotions out of me and the class. Not to be biased but mine was clearly something else. If I don't win then this vote was rigged.

"Ok. Let's write our votes down and see who wins."

I think I know who I'll vote for.

"Don't vote for yourself though. That would be cheating and make you look like a fool."

We all finished writing and were ready to turn over and reveal.

"On 3! 1...2...3"

We turned the paper and I immediately noticed that Sean had voted for Ethan, just like me.
Ethan had voted for Sean. I got zero votes.

"Hell Yeah! I won! You LOSERS! Get destroyed! I am the king at writing! You all Suck!"

He only won because he cheated and wrote a poem. I should have written a poem. If only I had the experience he had. If only my chances at love were as slim as his It would have been perfect and won.

"Hey, I bet you are thinking something rude about me just now." 

Damn it! He even knew that I just insulted him! What has the world come to.

"Don't worry, Owen. I liked your story."

"R-really?" Sean was the light of hope for me. I knew I could always count on him to be there for me. 
"What was your favourite part?" I asked.

"Errrr… Well… You know… The part… About the… cat?"

"YOU DON'T EVEN REMEMBER!" 

"I remember!" Some random dude in our class shouted across the room.

Great, my story was only remembered by minor background characters. What an awful existence I live.

"Well, your story was just depressing. Why would anyone want to vote for something so depressing."

"Right! Ok. Let's have a class vote. They were all listening so let's let everyone vote! It's only fair."

"Fine, but stop complaining when you lose."

We re-read all the stories to the class and sometime later they all finished voting. The teacher was counting up all the votes and wrote them all down on the board in front.

"HECK YEAH! 16 VOTES! STILL FIRST LOSERS! SUCK IT!"

His poem got 16 votes? What? I-i... I don't know what to say.

"I'll take 9 votes."

Sean got 9 votes. He still came second. Which means. I'm still last.
how many votes did I get? Was it close?

ah... I got 1 vote. 
Only... 1... vote.
My pride and joy... 1... vote.

"I... I admit defeat."

School can either be the best time of your life or the worst. Either you are going to spend it being super popular and talk to tons of good looking people, or you will just be stuck at the bottom of the barrel with everyone else.

The last few years of your school experience are the most important, who knows what will happen. Will you find love? Will you fight your friends? "Sister Yunxi, you've got flowers again."
Little Moon and Little Star were employees of Y Cosmetics. Seeing Zhang Yunxi heading over, their faces immediately lit up with admiration.
They were slightly younger than Zhang Yunxi. They did not manage to get into university after high school but instead went to normal school. However, they were not well connected, therefore they never got to become a teacher, and finally settled on working for Y Cosmetics.
Although they were not considered the best in appearance, they were lively and still pleasing to the eyes over a longer period of time.
"Sister Yunxi had already received 16 bouquets of flowers and 38 confession cards. Meanwhile, Sister Miyako received 11 bouquets of flowers and 23 confession cards. Both of us only got four bouquets of flowers. The difference is just too vast!" Little Moon twiddled with her fingers dejectedly.
"Sister Yunxi, why don't we sell these flowers? I'm sure they're very expensive!" Little Star suggested with a greedy look on her face. "After selling them, we can enjoy a good meal!"
"Let's just give these flowers to our returning customers. Get to work," Zhang Yunxi replied with a smile, after which she looked at Ye Lingchen hopelessly. "Ever since Y Cosmetic became popular on the internet, we'd receive flowers on regular days as well."
"Boss, you have a delivery!" Outside, the sounds of a delivery guy could be heard once more.
"Hehe, you Chinese people are really lame!" Miyako chuckled condescendingly. Shreds of paper was littered in front of her; they were whatever was left from the confession cards she received earlier.
Ye Lingchen frowned. With her time spent just on receiving flowers, Zhang Yunxi would not be able to get anything done that day. 
'This won't do. This is picking on my cosmetic store!'
He quickly went into the inner room of the cosmetic store. It served as the break room for Zhang Yunxi and the rest. He quickly took out a piece of paper and a pen.
Zhang Yunxi took a curious peek at him just to see Ye Lingchen's pen move slowly on the paper. Each stroke was on point, as though they were printed from a printer.
"Crab is peeling my shell.
The notebook is writing on me.
The sky filled with me lands on the maple leaf and snowflakes.
Yet you're thinking of me."
It was a simple message, yet Zhang Yunxi was frowning and could not process it fully.
However, when she read through it the second time, her expression showed that she just had an epiphany. She was stunned as tears flowed from her eyes.
After a brief moment of blanking out, she finally looked at Ye Lingchen in astonishment. 
"Lingchen, you wrote this poem?"
"It's just something simple. These animals copied a few poems from the internet and dared to challenge my cosmetic store. How can I tolerate that?" Ye Lingchen harrumphed, then passed the poem to Zhang Yunxi. "Stick this outside. Tell them that if they can't beat this poem, then don't bother sending anymore."
"Pfft!"
Zhang Yunxi could not hold back her laughter. She rubbed the tears from the corner of her eyes and threw an amused look at Ye Lingchen. "Lingchen, you're so cute. Are you sure you're not being jealous?"
"I'm doing this to make sure my employees don't get cheated. It's to ensure my store can operate normally!" Ye Lingchen said with a straight face, as though he was on the side of justice.
Zhang Yunxi took the poem and placed it on the door of the cosmetic store. She also included Ye Lingchen's earlier statement. In an instant, those queuing up in the store rushed over curiously.
"This is a poem? That's so easy!"
"It feels a little like a love poem, but it just doesn't flow right!"
"Competition? This poem doesn't feel special at all. Is it that hard to surpass this poem?"
The crowd broke into their own debate. Quite a number of them even took out their phones in a hurry and uploaded this poem onto TikTok. At the same time, Zhang Yunxi had also uploaded this poem onto Y Cosmetics' official Weibo account.
Y Cosmetics had over three million followers. Just as it was announced, it immediately attracted a large number of views.

However, Zhang Yunxi merely gave them a faint smile. "This poem is very simple. Just read it a few more times and you'll naturally understand. This is the most beautiful poem I've read in my entire life."
Everyone was taken aback, unsure of why Zhang Yunxi thought so highly of it.

Another day means, another hell day for me. But, i really need to go to school. 

Everyday in my life has same scenarios. Wake up, take a bath, eat my breakfast, prepare my lunch, and now prepare to go to hell-- i mean school. Then, same people are entering the gates, same faces are bullying me, and same reasons why they bully me. They're anti-gay. Especially those group of men called 'Bangtan', they might look like those killer or gangsters, oh hell, they look like gay for each other. 

And again, I'm late in my literature class.

"Mr. Kim, promises are promises! You just told me yesterday that you won't be late again, but you broke it!" Professor Kim scolded at me in front of my classmates. Again.

"Told you sir, he is working as a host!" i looked at my classmate, Jimin, as he said those words. I just glared at him, since they always tell those everyday and I'm used to it, since it is not true.

"Or worse, as a prostitute!" Yoongi added. And now, they made my anger out.

"Who the fuck ever told you those? Stop spreading fake news, it adds the toxicity of this shitty school." I yelled at them. Professor Kim looked so shocked 

"Mr. Kim, that attitude is not tolerated in school! For now, this is your first warning. If you ever do this again, you'll be sent to detention room. Mr. Min, go to detention room after my class." Professor Kim said. And I just went to sit at my chair. Really? Not tolerated? Seems like it's the most tolerated attitude of this hell.

"So class, you will have an activity for today. You will write something what you really want to say in a piece of whole paper. It can be in a poem, or paragraph form. No limitations, you can use your creative imagination, and you can start now." Prof. Kim announced, and sat down in his chair.

What shall i write, hmm? Maybe I'll give him an idea.

So i decided to write my poem again.

Jin's POV

"So class, pass your papers now." I told them as my period runs out of time. As i said those words, Namjoon passed his work.

"Oh, such a nice, kiddo. You really work your activities so fast. Any secrets?" I asked him, since I am really impressed of him since I became their Literature teacher.

" 'm just inspired enough, prof. That's all." He said and smiled, showing his deep dimples. How cute. Well, what am I thinking?

"Well, you may now proceed to your next class, Mr. Kim. Hope you don't repeat what you've done earlier again, I know you're a nice person. See you around!" I told him nicely. And he went out.

As I wait for the others to finish their work, I decided to read Namjoon's work.

As I read his poem, the students left in the room passed their works, and went out, except Yoongi.

Dear diary, today I can't stop thinking about my love Monte, he was the love of my life I can't help but think about the good and bad times we shared growing up over the past few years, I still have the poem he wrote for me in middle School every time I read it my eyes fill up with tears, so I will make this my final day reading the poem that he has gave to me.

This is to my future wife, from your best friend forever crush Monte. As I begin reading the love letter out loud tears begin running down my cheeks.

Oh my God I would pay the highest price for you, but you have for us more than treasure, my love for you by all the seeds of time cannot be measured, I reached the brightest star for you, and grab it from the sky, but it could never help to reach the glamor in your eye.
I would travel all the rolls of Earth if you were lost far away from me, and if my eyes were taken then I'll trust my heart to see, and if my heart was broken, then I will find you with my hands, and I will crawl over the hill lots, and I will burrow and the sands.
Then if all my vigor failed me, and it left me on the ground I would know which direction to be carried by your sound. Still if I had my faculties I would look without delay or I would want you to return to me my love everyday.
I would scale the highest mountains where the oxygen would stand and I would travel down the river and I would hunt amongst the din, I would walk over the waves and look for your love they're applying I will swim to the bottom and seek for you a amongst them all.
I couldn't continue reading , the more I read the faster my heart was speeding.
I began reminiscing about the time we both signed up for open Mic hour 7th grade year. Monte beg me to join, I was very shy when it came down to speaking in front of a audience or a crowd of people but that moment I overcame my fear and took that chance that seventh grade year on stage I read my first poem in front of the whole school!

Patrick sat inside his car parked outside Cyd's place.  He would take a walk around the area to stretch his legs then go back inside the vehicle to check his phone.  He drove back to her office a few times and found her car still in the parking lot.  He called her phone numerous times, but it just kept ringing.  He was feeling frustrated, miserable, and out of time.  Lawrence told him that they were flying out of Brunei by 7 am, and, for a second, he played on the idea to give them the slip and hide somewhere else.  Then he remembered Cyd and knew that it was out of the question.  Patrick re-checked his watch, and it was almost midnight.  Cyd, he thought, please talk to me.
As far as Patrick can remember, their family has always been different.  He spent his early childhood days shuttled between his parents' modest house in the suburbs and his grandfather's mansion in Holland Park.   There were rare occasions when an invitation for the family to join an auspicious event at the estate would be extended to them. Still, his father had consistently declined as it always excluded his mother.
Chen Mee Ting was a lovely young lady, singlehandedly raised by her mother as her father disappeared when she was only days old.  She best remembered her childhood filled with hand-me-down dresses, shoes, and even books as her mother struggled to put food on the table, let alone send her daughter to school, by working as a sales clerk. An aunt wanted to adopt her to ease her mother from child-rearing worries, but her mother would not hear of it. Mee Ting had not lacked love and affection, but every so often, she found herself dreaming of a dress that she had seen someone wearing in school or a new pair of shoes that she would feel was made especially just for her.
She was ecstatic when her mother told her after high school that she has set aside something for her college education.  However, her mother stressed that it would depend on the school as she can only send her daughter to a community school and not to an expensive private school for college.  She applied for a scholarship and worked part-time to cover some of the other expenses to help her mother.
On her way to school one day, she accidentally saw a piece of paper with some scribbling that she recognized as a poem.  The top part seemed to be missing as she held the bottom part of a page torn from a notebook.  She read the words written on the part that she had and was quite taken with the message that it was trying to convey.  She decided to write the top part that was missing to complete the poem.  Half belongs to her and the other to an unlucky poet now missing part of his or her work.   She submitted a copy of her poem to the student council for publication in their college newspaper.  Unbeknownst to her, the student council sent the top ten poems they received to a publishing company for compilation and possible inclusion in a book.  The book will feature original works of homegrown and aspiring poets to be published nationwide.
Two months later, a man showed up at Mee Ting’s humble abode and introduced himself as Tan Boon Hua.  Mee Ting has never heard of him.
"Miss Chen Mee Ting, I'm sorry to come unannounced, but I got your address from the student council in your school.  I had to see you as I believe I'm the father of your child," He confidently told her.
"What child?  I'm not married and certainly have not had a child yet.  I’m sure that I wouldn’t forget if I ever did have one!”  Mee Ting was indignant.
“Well, you definitely took a part of me and raised it well.  I am here to know the mother of my child.”
“Sir, I believe you’re in the wrong house, and if you don’t make yourself scarce in the next minute, I will scream at the top of my lungs and send my neighbors to chase you out!”
The man pulled a small notebook from his bag, opened it to a torn page, and showed it to Mee Ting.  
“Do you remember this?”
Mee Ting looked closely and read the first few lines. She realized that it was an incomplete poem with the bottom part missing.  She looked up at the man, confused.
"Did you happen to find the bottom part of the poem I wrote, filled in the missing top part, and submitted it to your school council?"
Mee Ting's hand went up to her mouth in horror.  She immediately went inside her room and looked for that piece of paper with only the bottom part of the poem that she found lying on the ground.  The half-torn page was neatly tucked inside her most favorite book.  When she went out, the man was still patiently waiting by the door. After being handed the paper, he tried to show her that it was the exact piece of paper torn from his notebook.  She opened her mouth to explain, but he cut her off and spoke.
“So, you see, Ms. Chen, I am the father of the child you took away from me that day.”  He smiled at her.
That was the start of their story.  Tan Boon Hua was taking World Literature at the University of Yale in America but decided to take a school break at the behest of his parents.  A week after, they started dating, and Boon Hua told Mee Ting about his family and what exactly they were into.  Mee Ting was stunned and tried to avoid Boon Hua, who remained unwavering.  When Boon Hua’s father increased the pressure on his son to leave Mee Ting, Boon Hua decided to cut all ties with his family and proposed marriage to her.
The first two years of their married life were stressful as Boon Hua found it challenging to find any work to support his new young bride.  His father made sure that no one came to give him help as he wanted his son to come crawling back to him.  It became a long wait with no end in sight.   After two years, they received news that the woman their son married has given birth to a healthy boy, who they named Wan Hsien, which meant 'The One with Ten Thousand Virtues.'
Overnight, things changed in the lives of the new parents.  Opportunities and aid came in different forms.  The father has extended an olive branch to his son.  The son hesitated, but his wife begged him to accept the generosity of his father. Boon Hua then noticed something wrong: The olive branch offered did not extend to his wife, Mee Ting.   Again, Mee Ting pleaded with her husband to make peace with his parents for the sake of their son.   It was beginning to take a toll on her as her husband's family thwarted all their efforts to live peacefully.  
Boon Hua accepted his family's offer of help.  In exchange, they requested to see more of their only grandson.  Gifts came in the form of a significant trust fund, educational grants, and stocks.  
Before Wan Hsien was born, Mee Ting suffered a miscarriage that they thought was because of Mee Ting's poor health.  However,  after giving birth to their firstborn, two miscarriages again followed.  Eventually, they stopped trying to conceive again as they felt that they could no longer bear the pain of losing another child.
Wan Hsien went to a boarding school in Australia for his early years of education.  At first, he resented the separation but growing up. He then decided that being away from his feuding family afforded him the peace he lacked whenever he was back home.  He later went to Oxford and took up Accountancy. When the lights in Cambridge beckoned, he pursued his masters in Harvard, putting more distance between himself and his dysfunctional family.  He took on the name Patrick during his university days in another attempt to disassociate himself from his family, only to find out later that the word meant 'King' or 'Nobleman.'
Later, Patrick went back to Singapore to take his place in the family business, but in another feeble attempt at defiance, he went to work for an auditing firm as an audit assistant.  He told his grandfather's lawyers that he wanted to be left alone and that, should they refuse to keep their distance, he will again consider taking residence in another country.  
Patrick was caught by surprise when his grandfather offered a truce, an offer to end their more than three decades of silent war; that is, if he would consider marriage to a suitable partner of his grandfather's choice. When Patrick first saw Emily, he chuckled.  In his mind, Emily Seah is power-hungry personified.  The truce also included that his grandfather would finally recognize his mother.  With much misgivings, he agreed.
That was two years ago.  Patrick threw his life into his work and was easily promoted to supervisor then manager. When the chance of a  secondment came up, Patrick was the only one who volunteered.  When he found out that it was to their office in Brunei, he remembered feeling disappointed as there was nothing in Brunei that he might find even remotely amusing.

This is the story of Cyd, a young Filipino woman in her mid-twenties, who will travel to an Islamic sultanate and work as an assistant to the senior partner of the country’s biggest law firm.   Finding love is not in her list of priorities as she wants to enjoy her youth, friends, and opportunities.
