Chapter 50: Evelyn
Each time I checked on William, I always wanted to run over, hug him, and tell him everything. I wanted to tell him how it was when I first accepted my future, every detail. Vivian was a little wary of Claude's invitation.
She had more than 10,000 years of experience on Earth and had seen all kinds of storms on various planets. She was not a coward. She just found this Claude very weird and suspicious.
For a young demon hunter, even if he were gifted in magic and combat skills, he would lack the necessary experience and wisdom of life. Such a young man must lack both. But this Claude clearly doesn't fit all of these characteristics and he also admitted that there was 'something else' in his soul. In this case, Vivian must be cautious. "Before I go with you, who are you? Claude? Or something else? If you're some old guy you can tell me honestly. I don't think there's anything older than me on this planet. "I'm certainly Claude," the young demon hunter said and smiled. "But I also accepted an extra portion of the inheritance, which coexisted with Claude's soul. "We'll tag along?" Hao Ren pointed to himself and Lily.
"All of you." The young demon hunter just nodded and glanced at White Flame and Teuton. "Everyone who is here right now and right in front of me should be invited. This is an order handed down six thousand years ago."
A chill went down Hao Ren's spine. A guy who died thousands of years ago left a prediction of what would happen on a given day was the last thing he could accept because fate and prophecy was the worst thing in his mind, let alone be a part of such prophecy. But Claude had come to this point, and he must not miss the opportunity, so he nodded and said, "Well, we'll go with you."
So the mysterious 'young' demon hunter led them out of the ritual hall and down a secret passage to the deeper part behind it. On the way, Hao Ren moved close to White Flame and asked, "Seriously though, what was Claude like before?"
"Told you, I don't really know him." White Flame frowned. "He was a silent introvert before he joined the Council of Elders. After joining the council, he followed the rules and regulations and lived a life basically as reclusive as the sages. According to the rules, the servants of the sages were not allowed to marry, to buy property, to leave the north, or even to leave the Netherrealm Clock Tower unless necessary. How do I know a mysterious guy like this?"
White Flame and Hao Ren did not lower their voices, so Claude heard it clearly. He did not mind and explained patiently, "Every servant of the sage was appointed via ritual. The old servant resigned at the ritual, and the new one accepted the blessing at the ritual. Some of the old memories were passed on to the new servant through the ritual. Demon hunters have a long history. We are the oldest race on the planet and therefore, some secrets must be passed on in a safe way."
"I see," Hao Ren said perfunctorily. Then, they stopped in front of a secret room.
Claude stood at the door of the secret room and activated the heavy, ancient door, which then slid upward silently. "Please go in. An old man has something to say to you."
Hao Ren and Vivian looked at each other and then walked into the secret room together.
And then they were startled by the scene in front of them.
There was no furniture in the round room, only a large, altar-like object in the middle. On the altar stood a huge head of two meters tall. The head was old and shrunken, with white hair and wrinkles, and the dark red face looked dignified.
Just one head.
Lilly was also startled when she entered the room. She then boldly went to examine the head, wanted to see if the neck and body were hidden in the altar. But just as she was about to come forward, the eyes on the head opened slowly.
The eyes looked a little cloudy but still filled with wisdom. The eyes took a glance at them, and then they heard a voice sounded directly in their heads. "You're here. It looks like this disaster has been solved by you."
Hao Ren stared at the head for a while and then suddenly realized what it was: a guardian giant!
A faithful guardian of the goddess of creation. Just like Muru and Lemendusa, it was a guardian giant – but there was only a head there.
They apparently recognized the race of the head, but they were aware that the situation was unclear, so no one mentioned the goddess of creation and the First Born, including Lily.
Vivian looked cautiously at the giant's head, unsure whether the guardian's memory, like any other otherworldlings, was impacted as he crossed the Wall of Reality. "You are?"
"You have lost your memory again, old friend," said the giant's head with a friendly smile. "Well, there were a lot of new faces, let me introduce myself. You can call me Mimir."
"Giant Mimir?" Lily exclaimed in surprise. "The giant of wisdom in Norse mythology who guarded the Well of Wisdom, who was ended up beheaded by the Vanir?"
Hao Ren could not stop Lily from talking crap, but the giant's head did not look angry. It just smiled and said, "It was an accident. Clumsy Honir shouldn't have touched the machine. Vanaheim's solar prism melted my body. It's a pity loss, but my head is alive and well, and…"
The giant's head said humorously. At the same time, many runes suddenly lit up on the ground near the altar. Under the radiance of runes, various appliances came out from every corner of the room, floating lively in the air.
"I can still take care of myself."
Hao Ren stared at the giant's head in astonishment and asked, "So… The giant in Norse Mythology is actually a guard… something like you?"

But if the giants in the Norse mythology were all these guardians…
They would have pacified the mythological era, and there would not be any war between the demon hunters and the gods.
"It seems that these stories have been misinformed as I expected. There is only one giant of wisdom, and that is Mimir. The other giants are different from me," Mimir smiled and said.
Vivian had been looking very serious since the beginning. She was trying to deal with her confused memory, but she could not think of anything related to Mimir. In other words, she remembered meeting a 'giant of wisdom' that belonged to the Norse mythology but had no recollection of the giant's looks, life history or befriending him. She patted her head and said, "Too bad I can't remember you at all. You were caught here by a demon hunter?"
Although Mimir's true identity was a demigod guardian created by the goddess of creation, he was a member of the Norse mythology in the mythological system on Earth, and the demon hunters ended the Norse mythology – so the only explanation for his head appearing in the Netherrealm Clock Tower was that he was captured here.
"At first, yes," replied Mimir slowly, "but then I voluntarily stayed. They need my wisdom, my knowledge, and advice, and I need a safe place to live. So I can't leave, especially after learning about their history, the reason they carried out the hunting, and the many secrets they kept. These brash little creatures touched things they shouldn't. I don't have the power to break the curse, but at least I can slow it down and wait until you, my friend, come here and solve the rest of the problem. It looks like my wait is worth it after all, though it seems that the process is not the way I thought it would be."


As a person who is down-to-earth as well as a good Samaritan, Hao Ren desires to live the rest of his life as a benevolent landlord. Stumbling into a curious yet mysterious lady, he began his journey of “collecting” abnormal and supernatural tenants.

What?! I was speechless as I read the title of part 1. Wait, wait, wait... I'm so confused!

"Posika, is what the part 1 title true?" I had pointed a finger at the title.

Posika took a minute before responding.

{"Yes..."}

I was flabbergasted, how could this be...

"You sure?"

{"Yes..."}

"...?!"

Part 1: A Slaughter by the Norse Gods.

Jotunheim, ????BR

Posika, a giant of Jotunheim, witnessed the fall of his people. The gods of Asgard stormed his home and killed almost all of his people. With the god's rampage, a population of 1000 giants were reduced to 240.

The only reason, Posika was one of the ones alive, was because he lived alone. The gods attacked the main heart of the giant population which resides in a city called Muohstr. Posika lived in a cottage in the hallow woods on the outskirts of the village, Flayngr.

The main city burned at a far distance from him. The only giants survived the onslaught were the ones that lived in the villages or the ones like him that lived alone in remote places.

Muohstr was the only city in Jotunheim and housed the majority of the giants.

Tears fell down Posika's face as he watched the city fall. Though he lived alone in a secluded place, his daughter, Johva, lived in that city. Johva and her husband Savivr lived in that city with their child, his grandson, Gotu.

Posika enveloped with rage looked towards the horizon and beyond and vowed that he will fight each and every one of them.

The next morning, in his forest, Posika trained his body and his mind for what his about venture into. He knew he needed the training as he hadn't fought in a long time. He was a mighty warrior back in the day and fought along side many of his brothers.

On the third day, Posika went to Muohstr to see the damage the gods had done. There he saw the city had been levelled to the ground. There was nothing there left, not even the scavengers would come and be able to find anything. He's family who lived in this city was gone, all that's left was remnants of a city that once was...

Posika was about to leave until he heard someone laughing behind him. He turned around and saw someone he knew all too well. Loki...

Loki sat on a blown out windowsill and watched for Posika's reaction.

Posika roared as he laid eyes on him.

"You Monster!" Shouted Posika at the top of his lungs.

"Aww, I've missed you too, dear cousin."

"Why did you kill them?!"

"Wait, you don't mean little great-nephew was in the city?"

"That's there home! Of course they were in the city!"

"Oh dear. Maybe, you should've let them live with you. Hm? That way you wouldn't have lost them."

"You crazy psychopath!"

"Now, now dear cousin, no need for name calling."

"I can say whatever I want, you gods had just wiped out nearly all of the giant's population!"

"Well, it was for the best. Couldn't have a prophecy coming true, can we?"

"What prophecy?"

"Ragnarök."

Hold it! Is this the same Norse mythology from my world? But how?

"Posika, your Loki's cousin?"

{"Unfortunately."}

I was floored... I can't believe it, Norse mythology. Could this be my work's Norse were talking about or could it be a parallel world situation.

"Your a wizard, Ryan," my otaku self suddenly spoke up. "Didn't work? Maybe you should try closing your eyes and click your heels three times and say, 'There's no place like home.'"

I ignored my otaku self and breathlessly looked at the continue button. I needed to know more, I needed to know if this was my world's Norse mythology.

I hovered my finger over the continue button for a moment before pressing it.

Part 2: The Giant that fought the Norse Gods.

"Ragnarök?" Asked Posika with eyes that pointed daggers at Loki.

"Yes...! and I had this bad a as premonition that something would happened to me, so we did what we had to do."

"What the gods did was killed over a couple hundreds of giants! That includes your niece and great-nephew, cousin!"

"Does it look like I care?"

Posika reached behind his back and pulled out a battle axe.

Light glowed along the blade of the axe head. Glowing letters ran along the side of the axe and when Posika swished the axe to his side, a shock wave bursted out from the axe. The shock wave hits Loki directly but his image only wavered.

"Tsk... Always the trickster..."

"Oh you know me quite well."

"Unfortunately.."

Suddenly a bright blue light flashed before Posika and then a heavy weight stuck him. Posika staggered, in hopes to keep his balance.

"Giant! Your last breath would soon be extinguished!"

"Thor!" Posika roared as he readjusted his shoulder.

"Giant! Die!" Thor's hammer mjolnir flashed behind Posika and struck his back. Posika staggered forward and blood spewed from his mouth. Posika got hit twice by mjolnir but the third hit was a different story.

Mjolnir came down from the sky onto Posika but missed and struck the ground instead. Posika on the very last moment, rushed forward towards Thor.

"Your time has come, God!"

Posika pulled his axe back before he swung it forward towards Thor. A icy mist floated around his axe as glowing letters lit the side once again.  Spiral waves of icy mist littered the air and froze anything that touches it.

Lighting surged around Thor's body and as the frosty mist were about a few centimeters away from Thor, the lightning crackled and zapped at the mist. It was like if Thor was wearing armour that's made out of lightning.

Posika swung his battle axe at Thor but the lighting around his body deflected his blows. Thor retaliated by launching mjolnir from every angle at Posika. Posika rather not fazed by his sparkly little hammer, dodged them all and kept swinging his axe at Thor. The battle raged on as Loki watched from the sidelines. Loki was enjoying himself as he watched a giant and a god battling each other and he didn't even need to lift a finger.

Posika axe lit up again with glowing letters but this time the colour of the letters turned from whitish blue to red. Flames spew out as Posika spun his axe. Posika conjured up a tidal wave of molten lava towards Thor, hungrily wanting to swallow him up.

At this moment, a voice rang out around them.

"What's going on here?"

Appearing before them was Odin, Tyr, Freyr and Heimdallr.

"Father, we need to kill him!"

"Silence!"

Odin watched closely at Posika before pulling out his sword.

"Kneel down giant and give me your head."

Posika immediately charged forward but Odin's two wolves Geri and Freki blocked his path.

"Lay down your head giant!"

"Never!" Posika shouted a response before leaping over the wolves towards Odin. There the battle began, five gods and two wolves verses a giant whilst Loki watched the whole thing.

Posika fought his hardest against seven opponents but the numbers overwhelmed him. The gods were relentless as they all piled onto Posika. Posika tried many things to disrupt the coordination of the gods but to no avail. Waves of magma, blizzard storms, violent winds and earth shattering quakes were not enough to break the combos of the gods. Posika was outnumbered and outmaneuvered. He was also running out of stamina too as fatigue sets in. He would eventually lose the battle and they were ready to claim their prize, his life.

Posika felt the struggle with every movement as he attempted to dodge the god's attacks but he became more sluggish and the attacks started to connect.

"Kneel giant and give me your head!" Boomed Odin. " You've lost, show some decency and surrender!"

The two wolves circled Posika and growled. Posika had no choice but to fall down on to his knees. He had lost.

This is exactly like the Norse Mythology except that the events were different. I may not know much but I could totally see Mrs. Flann shaking her head at me right now considering she had non stop talked about it once during one lunchtime, the whole mythology of the Norse Gods and honestly, I had only listened to half of it. Whilst I do find history of the gods interesting, its just the facts within them that shuts my mind off. Now if it was something like the God of war games or Thor Ragnarok from the Marvel movies than I would be more engaged. Yes they are for entertainment purposes and less educational but I'm a FTV teacher, what more could I say but that's what I know and teach.

Whether this was actually my world's mythology or not, the mere mention of the Norse made curious about this world to our home world.

I quickly pressed the continue button to read the final part of the story.

Part 3: A whole new world.

Posika was on his knees as Odin raised his sword over Posika's head. Odin was preparing to slice Posika's head cleanly off his neck with one strike. It was then, Posika heard a horn sound before his vision blurred and he crumbled to the ground.

Posika woke up from his slumber to the sounds of a young male's voice.

"Grandfather! You've finally awaken!" shouted a young man sitting beside the bed he laid on.

"Dad! Welcome back!" shouted his daughter, Johva who looked so much older than he had last seen her.

Posika reached up and touched the young man's face.

"Gotu?"

"Yes, grandfather!" smiled Gotu.

"Where's Savivr?" asked Posika looking around.

"He's out collecting firewood," Johva responded.

Posika nodded his head and looked around the room they were in. "Where are we? and how are you guys alive? I thought I saw the city burn..."

"Dad, we escaped the city before the gods came. Not many tried to escape but wanted to fight against the gods, but those that did fled before they came."

Posika nodded his head and tried to get up, but when he did, he saw his hands. They were not his but what looked like an elderly mans. 

"Why are my hands so wrinkly? and how is Gotu so big? The last time I've seen the boy, he was only about as high as my knee..." 

Gotu looked at his mother and Johva's eyes wavered.

"Dad... how do I say this. You've been asleep for hundreds... no thousands of years. A group of travelers came past our group, carrying a man's body behind them. At first we didn't know why these travelers were carrying him since they were struggling with the weight but when they stopped in front of us. They had revealed the man to be you, Dad. I broke down and cried when I saw your face. You were all batted and bruised. Slash marks covered your body..." Johva stopped and cried her heart out then and there. 

"Grandfather, we had healed your wounds over time but that was a couple hundred years ago. You haven't woken up since until now." 

Johva nodded but kept on crying.  Savivr came back with a pile of logs, only too see his wife crying and rushed over to her. When he reached his wife, Savivr saw his father in law had finally woken up.

"Father!" Savivr gasped. 

"It's good to see you too, Son." Posika smiled at the young boy he had once taken as his apprentice and was now a grown man, married to his daughter and had a wonderful young son. 

Savivr had tears flowing down his cheeks but ran out of the room they were in. Not a moment later, from out the door, Savivr ran out off, loud voices roared from the door and into the room. 

Posika got up from his bed and walked over to the door. What he saw outside, astonished him. Thousands of giants, roared and cheered when they saw Posika popped his head out the door. 

"Guardian!"

"Guardian!"

Posika retracted his head back into the room and turned to his daughter. 

"Why are they calling me 'Guardian'?" 

"Because you fought against the gods and brought our pride back to our people. You have protected us all."

"But I..." 

"You did, the travelers told us this."

"Who are these travelers?"

Johva shrugged her shoulders.

It was then, they all heard a voice as a black electrified cloud of smoke filled the room.

The legendary Leviathan Axe was forged by the famous Huldra Brothers, Sindri, and Brok, who were dwarfs and weapon masters in Norse Mythology. Unsatisfied with the unwise use of the weapons and godly artifacts that they had created for the Aesir God Clan, which included figures such as Odin and Thor in Norse mythology, the two weapon masters decided to make the Leviathan Ace to balance the powers in the world of the Norse Mythology.
Obviously, the Leviathan Axe wasn't an ordinary battle axe, and it had its own unique way of being used and combat techniques.
If the players could use it well, they would learn many advanced combat techniques from it and use much more power than the people who did nothing but slash and hack with it.
The players in the East Continent and the Continent of Immortal Relic had learned how to control their weapons from the Legend of Sword and Fairy and the Wind and Cloud. However, the players in the West Continent found it difficult to control their swords since their weapons were mostly heavy and big, and it was hard to change their long-standing habits.
But now, from God of War, they discovered a whole set of skills from parry to ranged and melee attacks.
"I never knew these moves!" Valkyrie Isabela lay in the pool and did the moves in her mind. "Parry! Flying Leviathan Axe!"
"Hehehehe… in a few thousand years, I will learn all this stuff, and my power will improve greatly!"

After they returned from hunting, they entered the main storyline of God of War 4.
The story of God of War 4 evolved around the Ragnarok in Norse Mythology.
At this time, the Norse world was in chaos as Ragnarok was coming; everything was desolate.
Strange phenomena appeared in the nine realms, and more and more creatures were turned into things like zombies by erosion. Powerful god tribes remained safe but obviously had sensed the bad signs.
Hearing the word 'Ragnarok', people would think of the Olympian gods who were all wiped out and wonder if the bald man would kill the Norse gods during Ragnarok. But obviously, it was not possible.
[TL Note: Ragnarok's Chinese Translation means the dusk of gods.]
After his failed suicide attempt, Kratos drifted to Midgard and became a hermit. He married a woman and had a son.
The last wish of his wife before she died was for her ashes to be spread at the highest peak of the nine realms.
In God of War 4, the players found that Kratos had withdrawn the fierceness from his eyes and had learned to control his emotions.
Right now, Kratos was only a husband who wanted to fulfill his wife's last wish and a father who protected his son as the latter grew. He was no longer the God of War who had killed all the gods of the Greek Pantheon.
However, things didn't go as Kratos wished. As they returned to their home, Fang Qi and the viewers heard booming noises like muffled thunder and then a series of heavy knocking on the door.
With an ominous feeling, Kratos immediately motioned for his son to hide. Then, he opened the door and saw a stranger who was as thin as a rod and covered in tattoos of Norse runes.
The runes looked like those worshipped as gods by primitive people in the ancient times. They seemed to contain endless power and extremely mysterious laws of nature.
Obviously, Kratos didn't know him, but the visitor sounded provocative.
"You do not want this fight," Kratos said coldly with threatening eyes.
But the stranger ignored it and said with even more provocation, "Oh… I'm pretty sure I do."
Then, he punched Kratos in the face!
"F*ck?!"
"My goodness?!"
"This guy is so bold?!"
The viewers froze in shock. After all, even the Olympian gods didn't dare to fight Kratos head-on, but this person looked as if he wanted Kratos to kill him.
If it was in the past, Kratos would have attacked him. But at this moment, Kratos suppressed his fury and said, "Leave… my… home."
"You are going to have to kill me for that to happen." The stranger threw three punches at Kratos face!
Not able to endure any longer, Kratos knocked the stranger to the ground with a punch. He was about to punch again when the stranger got up and hook punched Kratos' chin, sending the latter flying for over 30 meters.
"How incredibly disappointing." The man stretched his neck and remained intact after receiving a heavy punch from Kratos, and he said, "Come on then!"
"This guy…!?" The saint-level masters, as well as the elves and knights who had played the God of War trilogy, stared at the scene with widened eyes!
This guys dares to taunt Kratos like this!?
"Who is this guy-!?" At this moment, the Valkyrie who was sitting in the pool also froze at the scene. After all, she had first-hand experience of Kratos' great power. Otherwise, she wouldn't be lying here.
Even though Kratos' strength was much weaker than before, he was still an extremely powerful master. It was obvious that his combat techniques were even better than before!
But this stranger wasn't beaten to death after taunting Kratos like this. Besides, he even looked as if he had no interest to block Kratos' strikes with the Leviathan Axe!
"This guy looks very powerful, totally different from the small monsters before now." Mr. Fang said as he controlled Kratos to attack, "But it's simple to fight him while he taunts me and doesn't care to dodge. I wonder how berserk he will get later."
"But we must be aware of his potential sudden attacks!" The moment Mr. Fang said that, his opponent punched abruptly.
Subconsciously, Fang Qi lifted the shield - parry!
As everyone knew, ever since Dark Souls, almost all opponents couldn't block the sudden repulsive force from being parried, and they would be shocked into numbness by it.
But this guy used the force from the parry to float back as lightly as a leaf in wind. While turning in mid-air, he deflected all the forces perfectly with spinning.
Swiftly, he punched again as if he just teleported!
"He deflected it-!?" Everyone including Valkyrie looked at the scene in astonishment. After all, the parry was very difficult to use, and the parry in the system version of the games was launched in a very ingenious way, which made it almost impossible to counter!
But the parry which is supposed to be impossible to deflect got deflected with ease!?
Valkyrie Isabela screamed silently because Kratos didn't even use this complex skill in the battle with her!
Mr. Fang practiced it the whole morning on the livestream and was more familiar with this game now.
Almost at the same time when his opponent attacked, he thrust out his shield at an angle - parry!
This time, his opponent couldn't deflect it with ease and was sent flying backward by the shield, knocking down two white birch trees as he flew. In the very second when he lost his balance, Fang Qi took the chance and controlled Kratos to throw out the fatal flying Leviathan Axe!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The godly weapon, Leviathan Axe, couldn't hack open the stranger's body, but the whole mountain was shattered by this crash.
However, in the next moment, a figure shot out like a cannonball and threw another punch!
Parry!
When his opponent struck onto the thick shield, Fang Qi felt the shield sink a little as the runes on his opponent's body lit up in bright blue lights. The huge godly force wasn't parried. Instead, the parry was suppressed by the great force in the fist!
"This-!?"
At this moment, everyone was enthralled by this battle as they watched it without blinking, finally understanding that the difficulty level 'Give Me God of War' meant your enemies were all as powerful as the God of War!
The ultimate duel of power and technique between two figures who stood at the top level in the mythological world was about to happen.

-Inter-relation of Elves, Gnomes, and Dwarves.

 

This is probably the head-scratcher from the latest proper lore chapter that has a lot of people wondering. However, there is an actual proper reason why I decided to go with all of this, because in fact the three races have all actually been confused as the same species as one another at some point during their origin. As such, I have made all three of them related to one another for the purpose of the lore of this world.

 

The origins of the three races is a little convoluted. These three terms are all based on the German language, but Gnomes and Dwarves both have their original origins elsewhere. The reason behind my linking Gnomes and Dwarves actually is reflected in the complex history with these three races.

 

Dwarves originally come from Norse mythology, and are supernatural beings of incredible power that rivals the gods. In some Norse legends, four dwarves named after the four cardinal directions are even said to hold up the sky. They are most closely associated with metal smithing and metal work, and are said to have incredible abilities in that field. The dwarves were even the ones who created the most powerful weapon of the gods, Thor's hammer Mjolnir which was crafted from the heart of a collapsed star.

 

There are also some norse legends that talk about Elves. However, upon closer examination of these stories about Elves, you quickly realize they are described as appearing like and doing the exact same things as the Dwarves. From this, it becomes clear that the Elves and Dwarves described in Norse mythology are actually referring to the exact same entities and are just called different names in different tellings of the legends.

 

The reason for Elves and Dwarves being mistaken as the same creatures likely stems from the Scandinavian countries being close to Germany geographically. While the German version of the dwarves are short and stocky with long beards, the Norse version of the dwarves are, in fact, tall slender and powerful, far more closely resembling the German Elves than the German Dwarves.

 

Now, as for where Gnomes come into all of this, they actually come from Renaissance Magic, a revival of the occult during the renaissance era primarily out of Italy. Gnomes were said to be earth spirits that could move through solid ground as easily as a human could move through air, and were described as "two spans high" (Span = the distance between the tip of a grown man's thumb to the tip of the pinky if the fingers are spread as far as they will go.) Similarly, when this concept of a Gnome came to Germany, it got wrapped up in the German concept of the Dwarf and the two got confused with one another.

 

As such, the reason for the inter-relation of Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes in the lore of this story is put there to reflect how these three races had very close relations with one another in their origins to the point of frequently being confused for one another.

 

The three races have been generally described here, but this only explains why I decided to have the three races be related in this way for the purpose of this lore. My gnomes and dwarves though, while being closer to their original lore than the Tolkien-based D&D universe has them, are harshly nerfed compared to the original lore. (Or, maybe not. This is a cultivation world after all, their original lore could just describe those at the highest levels of their cultivation.)

 

So, each race will also deserve to have a deeper dive taken into each one of them.

 

 

-Elves

 

The Elves are the only one of the three races that actually have their original origin in German lore. They are very closely associated with Faeries, and said to be supernatural beings of great power. Elves in German lore would often help or hinder humans in several ways.

 

One of the frequent ways they were said to harm humans was by kidnapping children who wandered into the woods. Although, there is some question as to whether or not this was actually a bit of wishful thinking on the part of the parents as the elves were also said to treat the kidnapped children well and said to have a great love and desire for human children. It's likely that thinking their missing children were kidnapped by elves would be better than the possible alternatives.

 

There are several legends about faeries and elves alike that say that if you eat any food that they offer you, you will be forever unable to leave their realm. It is difficult to track the particular origin of this take on the legend though as it is common to German, English, and Irish faery lore, and is said to be a trait of both faeries and elves.

 

Elves have always been portrayed as tall and slender human-height beings, with Santa's elves being an anomaly and a relatively new and non-traditional portrayal of Elves as of the early 20th century. The model of Elves most famous today comes from J.R.R Tolkein, and then from Dungeons and Dragons which heavily based its lore on the works of Tolkien.

 

 

-Dark Elves

 

Dark Elves are actually a concept that also originated from Norse mythology. While for the most part, Elves and Dwarves were more or less described as having all the exact same characteristics and had the exact same feats attributed to them, indicating it was most certainly just a regional difference between the two telling of the story, there is one difference among those who called them Elves instead of Dwarves. They were, in fact, described as dark-skinned, and often called "Dark Elves."

 

It is likely that the Norse "Dark Elves" That were the same as their Dwarves came from an intermingling with German lore about Elves. However, German Elves are always described as fair-skinned. This is a likely origin of why portrayals of Dark Elves often have them being more powerful than the light skinned elves.

 

The name "Dark Elves" has something of a slightly sinister connotation to it to begin with, but the fact that they became something that was considered outright evil likely came from Tolkien once again. Tolkien's Orcs were corrupted and mutated Elves that were kept underground and turned into bestial blood-thirsty murder machines. Dungeons and Dragons would later separate the concept of the Orc off into its own race unrelated to the Elves, but instead they re-applied the term "Dark Elf" and gave these dark elves almost the exact same origin as Tolkien's Orcs.

 

One of the biggest differences between Tolkien's Orcs and the D&D dark elves, aside from gaining back their gracefulness, is that D&D dark elves have powerful magic which surpasses that of the surface Elves. This is likely a stronger reflection of the Dark Elf's origin in Norse mythology. (Of course, as a mechanic for game balance, the dark elf's magic is also spoiled by sunlight.)

 

 

-Sun Dwarves, Dark dwarves, and Duergar

 

The second edition of Dungeons and Dragons had a concept of sub-races of dwarves, some being mountain dwarves, some being surface dwarves. The D&D 2nd eddition surface dwarves were described in terms that made them sound almost exactly like the D&D halflings, which was their coppyright-safe version of Tolkein's Hobbits (since Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs were names taken from earlier mythologies and thus free use, but Hobbits are a race entirely invented by Tolkien and thus his intellectual property.)

 

Sun dwarves and dark dwarves are a concept that is simply easier for readers to recognize the meaning of. Duergar is a bit more of a complicated example though. These are another one of the sub-races of dwarves introduced originally in 2nd edition D&D, and unlike the surface dwarves the duergar are a sub-race that persisted. Duergar, as opposed to regular mountain/cave dwarves (the version most associated with the image of the modern fantasy Dwarf,) Duergar were a sub-race of dwarf said to live so deep under the ground that they were never seen by humans and were rarely even seen by the regular mining dwarves who never dug down that extremely deep.

 

Duergar are likely the inspiration of someone on the TSR (creators of D&D) staff who took a second look at the norse origins of the Dwarves and noticed the confusion between the dark elves and the dwarves representing the same people, and likely asked why it was that the dark elves skin was dark, but dwarves were portrayed as white skinned like the German version. And, subsequently made a version of the Dwarves more similar to the dark elves.

 

The different versions of the better known dwarves are justified through the original German lore as well. Just like the dark elf - dwarf confusion in the Norse mythology, German folk lore about Dwarves also has two completely different versions of the dwarf depending on who you ask. Some versions describe them as having long bushy beards, and others describe them as being child-like and easily mistaken for a human child. Thus, for the sake of the lore in this world, the version of the dwarf that's easily mistaken for a child have been turned into this world's equivalent of hobbits and called "sun dwarves," while the ones with bushy beards have been put up in their mines and called "dark dwarves."

 

 

-Gnomes

 

Gnomes are likely the race with the least alternate versions, but the most twists and turns in their history. As described earlier on why they are on the same family tree in this lore as Elves and Dwarves, this is because they were combined with the German dwarves in their legends soon after they came to Germany and stopped being high-power earth spirits.

 

Later, when TSR got ahold of them and put them into their Dungeons and Dragons game, they essentially became slender versions of the Dwarves that specialized in magic, also featuring pointed ears as though they were short elves.

 

This concept of short elves with powerful magic has appeared before this in the real world though in the form of Santa's elves. I have decided for the purpose of this lore, it was the Gnomes that had their name mistaken with the elves that created the concept of Santa's elves back on Earth.

 

 

-Fey Dragons

 

The fey dragons are actually a product of some relatively recent lore. They come from the Fairy Dragons from Dungeons and Dragons. D&D Fairy dragons are based on western dragons, having butterfly wings instead of standard dragon's wings. The origin of the fey dragons used here are a simple matter of me having taken this concept, not liking the portrayal of these little pixy like dragonoids with butterfly wings, and then using something I felt was more appropriate.

 

So, the fey version of any creature is supposed to be more powerful than their god-born counterpart. So, the fey dragons had to be more powerful than the normal dragons somehow. IRL, there are 3 major portrayals of dragons, Eastern Dragons, Western Dragons, and then the winged serpents of South America. I felt that winged serpents not only fit the definition of a more powerful form of dragon, since the South American winged serpents were all literal gods, but they actually were the closest of the 3 legends to the original lore about dragons back before they delineated into these 3 major models.

 

The original dragon lore was literally an amalgamation of everything that was dangerous to a human, basically they were mythical creatures that encompassed everything humans feared. Snakes are natural enemies of humans, so back before we evolved to walk across the ground we climbed trees to get away from things like that. But, what if the snakes could fly? Eventually, they were given the trait of fire breathing too.

 

As such, I felt South America's winged serpents had to be used as my model of dragons at some point. I still did not like the idea of fairy or butterfly wings, so I gave the fey dragons shiny bird-feathered wings.

 

 

-Fey in general

 

I have had a hard time tracking down the actual origins of the term "fey," but I have heard it in literature enough to know it applies to "fairy folk," basically any creature associated with faeries. This includes all mythical creatures of the forest that are not portrayed as monsters, elves being included on the list.

 

 

 

 

-Human hybrid fey

 

IRL lore is absolutely littered with stories about human-hybrid creatures, and some of them, fauns, satyr, and arla-une in particular, are generally regarded as fey. So, in order to accommodate the concept of fauns and satyrs as fey, I wound up having to expand the definition to include all mythical human hybrids, including several that were actually from Greek and Egyptian lore. (I made the decision to exclude the anubis since they 1. shared the name of an Egyptian god, and 2. were too similar to Aldets, which are even also from Egyptian lore. It's just that one is "dog" in general, and the other is "Jackal" specifically.)

 

 

-Demi faeries

 

Demi faeries are an adaptation of the "little people" from Irish folk lore. Irish folk lore had a whole number of different kinds of "little people," each with different names depending on where they were found. There were the little people that lived in the house, the little people that lived in the barn, the little people that lived in the fields, the little people that lived in shoe shops, the little people that lived in other "insert X name" shops, and literally all of them had a different name that the Irish lore called them depending on where they lived.

 

To get even more confusing, the names of them were also different depending on what part of Ireland you lived in. The names for these "little people" never stayed consistent at all. Eventually though, some Irish store owner living in the United States decided he wanted to find a way to better market Irish folk lore to US citizens in order to help mend the suspicion Americans had for the Irish (At the time, the Irish were treated a lot like how Latin Americans are today.) What he did was he gathered all the oddly named different Irish "little people" under one name, Leprechauns.

 

Much like how Leprechauns are a gathering of all the different named "little people" of Irish lore, the Demi faeries fill the same role. They do not have wings, but they have faerie magic and, like other fey, are reliant on human spirit energy. Do not expect them to act very much like Leprechauns though, they are based far more on the original "little people" lore, leprechauns were given a lot of eccentricities to make them more charming for the sake of marketing them to Americans at the time.

 

 

-Final words

 

Well, that's all for this chapter. I will likely do another one of these for the next book if anything new comes up that I feel needs to be talked about.

He had lived a good life. A man who traveled the world, saw the cultures, learned the languages. For a period, he had even discovered a historical preservation of a martial art practiced by the Samuri and Ninja in Japan that caught his interest. He learned it until he had attained a level of mastery worthy to instruct those back in his home in the United States.

Before he settled down to become a teacher, he first became a nurse. It was too late to go through the intense schooling to become a doctor, but he had been inspired by the Indian and Chinese traditions of the strong link between the ways of healing and the ways of body mastery that are the core of the martial arts.

He settled down and had his family, opened his school, and taught several students. It was a good life, his 60 years. But then, when he had finished the children’s class one day in which his own grandaughter was a student, he decided to take her for icecream. That was when it all went wrong.

He was fine after the accident. His grandaughter… was not. In that moment, someone claiming to be a fallen goddess promised him the ability to take the consequences of his mistake entirely onto himself. He would die, his grandaughter would live on in perfect health. In this moment of weakness, he could not possibly refuse.

The last thing he knew in his life was that his precious granddaughter had been saved. The first thing he knew in his next life was that he was in the womb, and he was a twin. A twin he would later discover was the very goddess who helped him to save his granddaughter.

Ned sighed deeply as he looked up at the ceiling, a weary look on his face.
'I hope Torrhen is okay.'
This past week had not been good for him. One one hand, he had to deal with an entire continent of lords who all wanted to waltz into his library and see what had happened, giving no small amount of stress and frustration. 
On the other hand, he had a deeply worried wife that took this all personally and through some sort of seemingly profound logic believed this was all her fault and that it was the Seven above who had brought this down upon her as punishment for her wrongdoings. Something about 'not loving a motherless child' tormented her day and night, which was bad for Ned as he had to tend to her during the day and calm her down in the night. Almost every night over the past week had gone by with barely any shut-eye. Instead, he spent his nights coaxing his wife to sleep as tears stained his tunic and the sheets beneath them. It didn't help that his children, all except Rickon, were also very deeply worried about him. Robb had got Rickon to believe that Torrhen had just gone a hunting trip alone to stop the boy from crying, and he hasn't worried since.
Ned felt the need to give closure to Cat and tell her the truth about Jon and who his parents were. He knew that she felt her disregard and hate for Jon lead her to believe this was all her fault. After all, there wasn't anyone else in the castle that could really be described as motherless. But the dying face of his sister Lyanna prevented him from doing so, lest he broke the promise he made to her no her deathbed.
Caught between his honour and his guilt towards his wife,he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
What was worse was that a faint throbbing noise could be heard from the library when all the noise in the castle died down. This wasn't heard in the day, but past the hour of the wolf ("the blackest part of night", midnight), this was loud and clear, frightening the animals and the people alike. Every morning, he saw his people getting more and more tired as they lost many hours of sleep from fear and superstition. 
Some had begun to say that Winterfell was cursed, but he shrugged that off. It wasn't the first time people suspected Winterfell was haunted and cursed, and it most certainly wouldn't be the last. But something about this incident, probably his instincts, told him that everything would change if and when Torrhen returned.

"Power is an illusion that resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less. A shadow on the wall, a fleeting idea of human fantasy. Yet it is as essential to all living beings as sustenance and air to breath."
After finishing his statement, Torrhen blacked out and woke up with a bad headache. It felt like he had a soldering iron pierced into his skull with how much pain he had.
He slowly got up from the floor, the taste and smell of dust filling his senses. Inspecting his surroundings, he saw a dark room lit with an eerie green light. He could see moss covering the dark stone walls around him. 
Before him was a double door. It was quite grand, standing at roughly 15 feet in height from what he could gather. The whole thing was made of a shiny black wood with a shining green metal at its rims. Around the height of his stomach were two golden doorknobs shining with gold. Carved in the middle of the double door was a sort of taiji symbol with two wolves, coloured black and white. The black wolf seemed to swallow the black sun and the white wolf swallowed the black moon, both wolves resembling those of the Stark sigil. Surrounding it was a thick white border with black runes written across it

"Where am I?" Torrhen asked himself. "What am I forgetting here?"
He took a closer look at the door before him, marvelling at the workmanship that went into so beautifully depicting the image before him. He then looked to the runes surrounding it, studying what it could be.
"Skoll is the name of the wolf who chases the bright priest into the desolate forest, and the other is Hati, Fenrir's son, who chases the bright bride of the sky...Wait, I understand this!?"
This realisation came as a shock to him. It was a great surprise to find out that he understood the runes on the door. He had never even learnt a single rune, after all.
He had the feeling that something happened between his reply to the wolf and his waking up here, but he had no clue what it was. There was a gap in his memory that nothing around him could give hints for. But something significant must have happened for him to suddenly understand runes. 
Thinking further, he also realised that what he just read had a very significant importance.
"Fenrir? Hati? Skoll? What am I dealing with here? Norse mythology!? What does a being like Fenrir and Norse mythology in general even have to do with House Stark in the first place!? Old man George, I really want to kill you right now!"
He knew what the three of them were from his old life, when his name was still John Scott and studied Norse Mythology in class. No one wanted to, but with how Norse mythology was misrepresented in movies and other forms of entertainment, their history teacher took it upon himself to teach them about it properly, along with the Olympians, the Hindu gods, the Egyptian gods, Buddha and the Shinto pantheon. 
According to his knowledge, Fenrir was supposed to be the wolf son of Loki, the God of lies, deception and fire, and brother of Jormungandr, the World Serpent, and Hel, goddess of the underworld. Due to being too powerful, the Aesir tried to chain him twice and failed. On the third go, Fenrir grew suspicious of their intentions even though the gods said that they were playing a game and testing his strength. He demanded one of the gods to put the hand in his maw as a show of faith. With no other gods daring to do so, Tyr, the God of War, placed his hand into Fenrir's maw. When the chains bound Fenrir, he bit off the hand of Tyr as was expected. The chain was tied to a boulder with a sword placed in his maw to keep his mouth open. The river 'Expectation' flowed from his mouth as he awaited Ragnarok, when he'd break free of his fetters and run throughout the world, with his lower jaw on the ground and his upper jaw above the sky, destroying everything and even going so far as to kill Odin, the King of Asgard and ruler of the Aesir tribe of gods.
Skoll (One Who Mocks) and Hati (One Who Hates) are supposedly supposed to chase the Moon and Sun respectively and devour the two on Ragnarok, but it was uncertain whether or not the two of them were merely other names for Fenrir, who was also described in myths to devour the Sun on Ragnarok.
'Now what the heck does this all have to do with House Stark!?'

"Information about the Norse Mythological System?"
Upon seeing these words, Kennard instantly couldn't shift his eyes away. He was so excited that his hands began to tremble.
As a genetic grandmaster, what had he never seen before? But right now upon seeing the information of a complete mythological system appearing before his eyes, it was truly difficult for him to maintain his calmness.
At the side, Feng Lin laughed when he saw this. He didn't feel too surprised at Kennard's reaction.
A hundred gene sequences wasted too much genetic potential. Didn't this Kennard simply wish to obtain new mythological knowledge?
In that case, he might as well give Kennard the stories he knew about the Norse Mythological System and let him probe the mysteries behind them on his own. Feng Lin didn't want to waste his genetic potential for nothing.
"Godking of Norse: Odin. He was the king of gods, the ruler of the world. He wore a large helmet and had two divine crows perched on his shoulders. They symbolized "thought" and "memory" respectively. Every morning, they would fly and report what they see and hear to Odin. Odin rode on two wolf mounts. The names of the two wolves were, "greed" and "desire". They were responsible for guarding him. In order to increase his intelligence, to be able to foretell the future so as to better govern the world, Odin was determined to drink the water from the sacred well of wisdom which existed beside the root of the world tree. However, the guardian of the well, Mimir, wanted him to pay the price of one of his eyes. Odin didn't hesitate; he instantly dug one of his eyes out. After drinking a draught of water, he obtained divine-level wisdom. He invented the ancient Nordic text. The fairy of fate then used these newly created characters to record destiny on his shield, and the runic characters became the source of all magic…"
"Queen of gods: Frigg. She was the goddess of love and governed marriage and family, the wife of Odin. She had authority in both Valhalla and Hades. She was extremely beautiful and had a white feather clasped in her golden hair. She dressed in white robes with a golden belt, and there was a string of keys on the belt. She loved beautiful dresses and resplendent gems. She once stole Odin's gold to buy an extremely valuable necklace, and after Odin learned of it, he stormed out of Asgard in anger. Asgard was then invaded by the frost giants, which then covered the entire world with their icy breath. Until seven months later after Odin returned to Asgard did the crisis pass…"
"Thunder god: Thor. He was extremely muscular and his strength was astounding. He had a pair of leopard eyes and golden beard, wielding a divine hammer with metallic gloves. He also had a golden belt on. Thor would frequently clash against the frost giants and giant pythons in the eastern border, protecting the home of gods from them. Thor was upright and plainspoken, even daring to rebut Odin. Thor's temper was extremely explosive, yet he was open-minded and heroic.
