"…" Despite his calm exterior, Anthony is very very nervous looking around the people in the conference room. The people he just addressed are the board members of Vagner Studios and the investors in 'Miss Sellers'.
"…" The board members can only mull over sullenly the poor ticket sales of 'Miss Sellers that Anthony reported.  
"I've heard from people that you had something to do with this?" One investor asks in hidden anger.
"Yes. Even though we lost 20 screens from Centurion, we managed to work something out with our distribution branch. We were able to offset our losses from Centurion by grabbing more screens from smaller theaters and independent ones. I also got last minute product integrations which saved us millions." Anthony reports wanting to neutralize his faults.  
"Everyone." Vagner Studio's CEO, seeing the unfriendly gazes of the people in the room towards him and Anthony, takes the attention.
"Let's just admit it, we were outdone. Anthony here at least did something that made us break even despite his… unconventional methods. We just can't dictate what the people want to see, and the people wanted to see Isaac's film more than ours. It's as simple as that." The CEO defends Anthony.
'What the FUCK?! That's what I said yesterday! You f*ckin dressed me down and now you're parroting me?! FUCK YOU!' Anthony curses the CEO with a glare.  
"I know you could have done better, but you're not wrong either." The chairman of the board speaks up. "What I'm more worried about is the future." This makes everyone in the room perk up.
The Chairman continues. "At least we broke even. The films of the smaller studios can't even sell tickets; they are f*cked. And if we don't get our sh*t together, even though we're big, we're f*cked too."  
"What do you mean?" An investor asks on behalf of those who are not in the know. Those who are in the know like the CEO and Anthony on the other hand, have an inkling of what the chairman is talking about.  
"The rumors about the sequel for that gangster film, I've confirmed it's true." The chairman reports to everyone.
*murmur* *murmur* The people look at him skeptically.
"A handful of the people who have a history with the Coniglio Family already saw it. There are even rumors that there's still a sequel after the sequel because the first sequel did not wrap up the story." The chairman erases the skepticism.
*MURMUR* *MURMUR* The room descends to subdued panic.
"So it's not just 'Miss Sellers' we should be concerned with, but the sequels 'Yard Blues' and 'Love Campus' too." The chairman says as he looks at the CEO and Anthony.
"And if Isaac is not the forgiving type, and he found out what you did, Anthony, what do you think he'll do?" The chairman concludes with a rhetorical question. Anthony's face crumples at this.  
"That's right. He'll do what we've been doing. Release his sequels alongside our films'." The chairman says to make the others understand.  
"… Why don't we uh… sue him?" A young board member suddenly proposes, saving Anthony.
"What?!" The others are dumbfounded.
"On what grounds?" The CEO asks.
"Let's just get some random guys, have them claim that 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer' is their work and that Isaac stole the idea from them. Rinse and repeat." The board member says.
"Intimidation suits? Are you fuckin stupid?" The chairman yells.
"What? We do it all the time against journalists." The board member says.
"You're not talking about libel or defamation, but copyright infringement! We're gonna get sued back for fraud if a judge doesn't slap us with it first." The CEO shoots down the suggestion.
"What's more stupid is that you're not just suing Isaac. You're offending Coniglio family too. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if someone in this room is connected to them and the Coniglio will find out about your stupidity before you even leave the building." The chairman says.
The board member swallows his spit but recovers his guts immediately.
"Then what the hell are we supposed to do? Wait it out? Wait until Isaac does not have a film on theaters?" The board member counters.  
"…" The CEO and the chairman are stunned by the unintended suggestion.
"Huh… Aside from making films that can match Isaac's film, which right now is hard to do? … Waiting it out… might just be the best thing we can do." The CEO says.
"Usually, we make others not want to compete with us but this time, that might just be the right move." The chairman shakes his head.  
"Really? That will just end up with more losses." The board member grumbles.
"We might save ourselves from losses…" Anthony butts in.
"Ah! Excuse me. May I talk to you for a moment?" The CEO however immediately grabs Anthony's arm with a warning glare.
Anthony ignores the warning and returns a look of defiance while brushing the CEO's hand aside. 'F*ck you. You approved of my plans. You also tried something, so you're going down with me if this don't work out.' Anthony thinks as he takes the center of the podium again.
The CEO can only give up and retreat to the side of the room as to not get caught in what he thinks an incoming crossfire.  
"?" The attention of the room goes back to Anthony, their curiosity intensified from the interaction they just witnessed.
"Without Isaac's film, 'Miss Sellers' could have been the best-selling film this year. To be quite honest? 'Miss Sellers' is just as good as September Ninth. It might even be better than September Ninth considering the details we put in it.
"That means that we've done great in applying Isaac's style and enough people liked it. If we can re-write 'Love Campus' and 'Yard Blues' into a better story, while making their quality the same with 'Miss Sellers', we will catch up with Isaac. We make money while we learn." Anthony concludes.  
"How confident are you?" The chairman asks.
"50%, tops that we can compete, 75% chance that we can break even every film until we catch up. But I'm 100% confident that our people are competent. They are learning on the job every day. Let's look for new talents too. There are many young and obscure indie film makers competing right now in different film festivals, and they have adapted Isaac's style well. Even though we can't compete with Isaac for now, we'll do well enough to survive." Anthony says. Anthony's confidence somehow calms the room down.  
"Another thing. Last year, there was a total of 100 million or so ticket sales in America and 40 million of those are by 'September Ninth' in only four months. The first seven months of this year, we saw 62 million tickets sold and of those, 35 million tickets are sold by 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer' in only six weeks." The board members are shocked at this report.
"We… can't keep Isaac do this to us…" An investor chimes in.
"We can't. However, we have a take away from this. In the previous years, before Isaac's debut, the highest we've seen in ticket sales in the country is around 90 million and that was in 2007, 10% less than last year.
"Looking at Isaac's 'September Ninth', he earned way more in ticket sales than DVD sales. That isn't normal in the industry. It's either 50% tickets, or 50% DVDs/Blu Rays. This means that Isaac actually  made movie viewers go to the theaters instead of them just waiting to buy or rent DVDs or Blu Rays." Anthony concludes.
"So you're saying, Isaac is changing how films are seen..." A random board member says.
"Yes. Without 'September Ninth', and 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer', we never would have known that the American film market is bigger than we thought. If we can offer the market quality, stand-out films like Isaac's, then we have the potential to capitalize in the biggest film market we've seen in history." Anthony explains.
*MURMUR* *MURMUR* All sorts of exclaims and discussions fills the room.
"…" Watching the people he cannot get through to previously now listen to him, Anthony is feeling proud inside but maintains his calm. He then looks at the CEO and the CEO simply looks away.
'Not only incompetent, a f*ckin coward too.' Anthony feels smug looking at the CEO looking small.  
"How do we do that?" The chairman asks after the round of discussion.
"… I have a suggestion, a summary really of the opinions of our creative teams… And you won't like it." Anthony begins with hesitation.
"We should stop making films of the romance or sports genre." Anthony says.
*MURMUR* *MURMUR* The room immediately react negatively and they share the same sentiment; "Those are our money-makers…"  
"Everyone… I get your knee-jerk reactions but here's the thing. Isaac proved that people are hungry for something new. He made films that we thought are against the market but he ended up setting a new trend. I hate to admit it but, it's a start of a new era for the industry." Anthony drops.  
"Then what are we supposed to make films about?" A random board member asks.
"It's best if you get the details from our creative teams themselves, but I can say something. I've seen various films that 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer' competed against in Sorrento and I think we can grab some ideas from them.
"First of all, we can stop making sports films. I can say with confidence that 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer' gobbled up the slice of the sports genre. Hell, I think 'September Ninth' even made sports films boring last year, making the sports films flop. Tell me, everyone. If you go to a theater that shows 'September Ninth' and 'Hard Ice', which one would you have seen?" Anthony asks.  
"... September Ninth..." is the split decision winner.  
"Exactly. September Ninth was more exciting to watch than 'Hard Ice'. That's why 'Hard Ice' flopped despite being nominated and winning awards. I myself would rather watch a real hockey match or behind the scenes footage of real athletes than watch 'Hard Ice'." Anthony says.  
"Now, would you folks rather watch 'Gold, Blood, and the Deer' or 'Yard Blues'?" Anthony asks again.  
"..." Tayaw's film again is the winner.
"Right. And it's for the same reason. While we can't make a gangster film like Isaac's, we can borrow some ideas. We can make films that talk about searching for family." Anthony suggests, receiving nods of approval.  
"When it comes to romance films on the other hand, we can still make them." Aiden says. This gets a more positive response.
"But we can't make them the way we used to. I've seen some of this year's best films in festivals. I've noticed that they still have flavors of romance in them but just like 'September Ninth', they are more about the growth of the characters as people, not just fighting for deserving it. Don't worry though. Our people right now are splitting their hairs to make that happen." Anthony reports.
Seeing the approval in the room, Anthony is now more confident. However, he does not want to appear dictatorial to his superiors.  
"If you're all not ready to give up on romance and sports, maybe we should make films that are not fairy tales but actually talk about the reality of love and athletes' lives. Those are just suggestions, but any topic really that is unique and will be interesting to people, we should make films about those." Anthony concludes.
That makes the room enter a lively discussion. Anthony can finally smile, having gotten through the skulls of the board members.

"He will prefer the one who is like a bat in his ass all the time, to his best friend and supporter! This situation is becoming more and more interesting!" Calum completed my sentence excitedly and glanced at Zayn who was still talking to his cousin. 

"We have to talk to the captain tonight and tell him that there are many suspicious things in this situation ... Call him!" I said hurriedly but he just grinned like the idiot he was! 

"Why don't you call him yourself?" He asked with excitement, smirking like a hyena and all I wanted at that moment was to kick him right in the face! 

"Well...what difference does it make? You call him!" I ordered strictly and he smiled with his whole ugly face! He was in the mood to annoy the shit out of me...again! 

"Oh my ... someone is being shy in here! Why are you embarrassed, buddy? The captain isn't really your boyfriend! You know that, right?" He whispered mischievously and I rolled my eyes at him angrily! Maybe it wasn't a bad idea to report his unprofessional behavior to boss Ashford! 

"Be careful of what you say! And it's forbidden to discuss private matters in public! Now shut up and call him!" 

"You're talking nonsense! You'll finally confess. I'm sure of that one!" He winked at me then he stopped his teasing and pulled his phone out of his pocket when he sensed that I'm at my breaking point and might beat him to death! 

"What happened?" He looked at me with a small frown and surprised, pushed his phone into his pocket. 

"His phone is off! Hey ... what do you think about seeing the captain in person? Louis knows us now and there isn't any reason we can't go to the store. We can take Louis with us and explain our reasons for him...what do you say?" 

I thought about it for a moment and when I saw that it wasn't much of a bad idea, I nodded with a small smile." You can think too...sometimes!" 

"Fuck you!" 

I leaned against my seat with a smile and looked at Zayn who was whispering with his cousin. The interesting thing that was making me take the risk and go to the store with Calum was that apart from Louis's behavior, Zayn's behavior was also very strange! He acted as if he was sure that Louis would choose him, he was clinging to Louis in such a way that as if he has known him for several years ... Weird! 

I had memorized all of Louis's schedule, and I knew he had class until three PM, and because we had chosen all of our Curriculums similar to Zayn's, all of our classes were shared with Louis too ... Oh fuck! 

How we didn't realize that Zayn always harmonizes with Louis? Whether in his class's, whether in the days that he comes to university! Zayn always is perfectly in line with Louis's schedule! 

As soon as the professor left the class, I took my things and got up from my seat... 

 "Ok, let's go!" Calum whispered with excitement and I tried to not look so satisfied with my decision. But God...it felt so good! 

"Where do you think you're going? One of us must stay with Zayn, otherwise, we have a 100% chance to get punished! You stay here and make an excuse for me so I can take Louis with me to the store and explain the situation to the captain. Okay, buddy?" 

"I really appreciate it when you ask my opinion about everything! I hate you dickhead ...the cool parts are always yours!" 

I clapped his shoulder with a smirk and hurried out of the classroom to find him before he could left the university , and I was finally able to get close to him in the parking lot ... small body and high speed! 

"Louis!" 

Hearing my voice, he turned to me in surprise and when he saw me, his eyes widened... 

"Why are you here? Are you crazy? If Zayn hears that you still talking to me, it will end badly for you!" He said anxiously and looked around quickly to make sure Zayn or his group were not close enough to see us together in the crowded parking lot...He was so kind and Seeing him alone and sad was burning my heart... 

"I don't care, Louis ... we have to talk. Can I take you to the store?" 

He looked at me for a moment and then nodded with a smile. "I love motor riding!" 

"Then let's go!" 

Until we get to the store, he made me laugh so many times with his crazy jokes, he tested his drumming skills on my helmet and blocked my view a few times with his hands...In general, he almost killed us few times, but it was good! It was great to have someone like Louis by my side. He was acting as if he had no grudge against me...As if he already forgot what we did to him a few hours ago! 

I parked my motorcycle in the parking lot of the store, and I wanted to tell him that he could get off, but even before I could turn off the motorcycle, Louis quickly jumped down of it like a rabbit! With a laugh, he took the helmet off his head and gave it to me and arranged his hair... 

"Thanks, buddy ... It has been a long time since the store route wasn't this pleasant for me!" 

With a smile, I put my helmet on the tank and got off my motorcycle. I was so happy that I was able to change his mood at least a little bit...betraying him in front of everyone was a bitchy move! 

"Don't mention it! In fact...Louis...I wanted to talk to you about something." 

He stared at me for a few seconds, confused, and then shook his head with a smile. "You mean the parking lot drama? Forget it!" 

"But..." I tried to protest but when I saw his relaxed and smiley face, I knew he wasn't angry with us from the beginning! 

"Seriously. You don't have to bother yourself. My issue with Liam and Zayn was my fault, and in fact, I have to apologize! I had no right to talk to you and Calum like that. I made a rash decision and I was furious because I did not know what exactly I did! Just forget it! " 

"Really?" He nodded with a gentle smile that warmed my heart! I really wanted the Alpha to be Louis! 

"Yeah! Don't worry about it! Aren't you coming inside? I think Ashton is already inside. He's always early!" 

I nodded with a big smile and he laughed out loud while walking beside me towards the entrance of the store... 

"I have a question...New sellers should always check in sooner than the senior sellers?" 

"Of course not! Until yesterday, I was the one who opened the shop, but because my schedule was disrupted due to the university and my new project, yesterday I handed over the key to our chief manager and arranged a break between the university and work for myself ... I really needed it!" 

I glanced at his tired face and bit my lip ... Sora had said that the alpha we are looking for is rich in every way ... Louis's financial state wasn't good at all, and Zayn...that rude bastard had a perfect condition! 

"What are you thinking about so deeply?" He was staring at me with a grin and I had to come up with a convincing answer very soon! Uh...

I am now baking cupcakes because I'm done baking cakes. It's already afternoon.

The owner led me outside the kitchen.
 
"Observe what the customers are eating,"
 
I saw lots of the customers eating the rainbow cake.

"That's right. When they arrived, they found out that there's a new cake displayed and they want to try. Some customers ordered them. It'd one of our best-sellers today, Marcella. Good job"
"Thank you, maam,"

I'm happy that the people liked the rainbow cake and I'm also happy because the owner praised me for doing a good job.
When it's time to go home, I went to a DVD store and bought some DVDs. I'm going to watch one later.
When I arrive at my apartment, I cooked dinner and popcorn. After eating dinner, I turned on the television and the DVD player. I put the DVD entitled, "Jumanji: The Next Level,"
When I was watching the movie, Kesner appeared beside me.
 
"What are you watching?"
"I'm watching Jumanji,"
"Oh, is it a new movie,'
"Yup"
 
Kesner and I watched the movie. I glanced at Kesner, and he is seriously watching the movie. I observed his handsome feature.
 
"What is it, Marcella?"
"Ah, nothing. Would you like to have some popcorn?
"Sure. Thank you"
 
I laughed because the scene is funny.
When I was about to pick a popcorn, I didn't know that Kesner is also picking a popcorn. Our hands touched each other.
 
"Ah sorry,"
"It's ok,"
 
I felt embarrassed.
After some time, I felt tired and sleepy.
 
Narrator's POV
Marcella fell asleep in Kesner's shoulder. Kesner observed her while sleeping.
When the movie is finished, Kesner disappeared.
The next day, Marcella woke up from her sleep, and she looked beside her, and Kesner is gone.
 
"I fell asleep last night. I didn't know that Kesner disappeared. Better get ready and went to the café," 
 
Marcella took a bath and got ready for work.

"Dan..." 

"Dan!" 

Dan opened his heavy eyelids, exposing a set of hazel eyes. 

'What's all the ruckus about?' Dan thought. 

He raised his head from the counter while adjusting his glasses and stared sleepily at the perpetrator. 

He was too sleepy to even glare. 

"What the hell Philip?" he said groggily. 

The said person just smirked, happy at his accomplishment of having successfully woken him up. 

"You have a customer, " Philip winked at Dan. 

"And she's pretty cute too, " he gestured to the door, "at three o'clock." 

The almost stiff movement of Philip's neck and his eyes oddly reminded Dan of a chicken with New Castle Disease. 

Now that he thought about it, he actually saw a chicken in his dream. 

'But why on earth would he have dreamt about a chicken?' 

He sighed, adjusting his glasses again. He turned his head lazily to the entrance of the bookstore. 

He saw a short, slightly curvy twenty-something-year-old with glasses walk into the store. She was wearing mittens and a very fluffy head warmer—the kind with a ball at the top. Dan's eyes widened and he felt his cheeks instantly warm up. 

He averted his eyes as she walked up to him by the reception.

 He cleared his throat and straightened. 

"Welcome to Elaine's Bookshop, what book would you like to read today?" he said with a smile. 

"Good afternoon. You have a lovely shop here." She returned the smile, which revealed a tiny dimple. 

"I want to buy two books actually, " she said softly. 

 Dan nodded. 

"Alrighty. Can you tell me their names?" 

"Bittersweet' and 'In The Last Days'. You know, the books by the twin best sellers?" 

Dan looked up, eyes wide. 

He'd never actually read the books, and according to several top Newspaper companies—including the New York Times—referred to their books as beyond remarkable. 

"Yeah, sure." 

"Do you have them?" she asked hopefully. 

He noticed her overly excited face. 

He smiled. 

"Yeah, give me one minute." 

Two minutes later, Dan was back with both books. He wrapped it and handed it over to her. 

She paid for the books and smiled kindly at him. 

His heart raced for some unknown reason. 

"Thank you," she said and she walked out the Bookshop. 

He heard someone cough beside him. 

"Ahem!" Dan blinked and turned to face Philip. 

"I think you got a little drool on your chin, " Philip jested and Dan rolled his eyes. 

"She's cute, " Philip continued. 

Dan sighed, closing his eyes. Philip scowled a little. 

"You've been single for too long, " Philip said. 

"Does it even matter who I like? You always steal them from me anyway." 

"Awn, cheer up Dan. I'm sure there's someone out there for you, probably some unlucky, unfortunate chick." 

Dan opened his eyes, they lowered. 

"Maybe, " he stated quietly. 

"Uh, what was that?" Philip gave him a scrutinizing look. 

Dan pretended to yawn. 

"Never mind, " Dan replied. 

Philip eyed him suspiciously then went back to his chirpy self. 

"Alright, suit yourself." Philip went back to counting the money in the cash register. 

Dan checked his wristwatch, it was closing time. 

"Philip, I'll be leaving, it's 10." 

Philip checked his wristwatch. 

"Wow, so soon." 

Dan removed his cap and shook his hair, freeing it. A few strands got into his eyes. 

He tried smoothening it, but it seemed his hair had other plans. 

Giving up, he left his unyielding hair, grabbed his cellphone on the counter and moved over to Philip's. 

"Aren't you ready?" Dan asked. 

"No, I still have one or two things to wrap up around here." 

"You go, I'll lock up, " Philip chirped. 

Dan nodded, grateful. 

"I'll see you tomorrow then. Good night." Philip nodded already back to counting the money. 

Dan grabbed his coat from the rack and walked out of the shop. 

He was met with the full force of the winter air. Streetlights filled the streets. 

He sniffed and put his hands into his pocket. 

He needed a smoke. 

Dan made his way to a dark alley, near his apartment. 

As usual, he found druggies and stoners there. Just the place he needed to be. 

He needed to warm himself up. 

"Sup D, what's good?" A very lean guy with a lot of piercings walked up to him. 

They called him Slim. Slim had AIDs, but that had never stopped him from smoking himself to stupor. 

"I'm K, " Dan replied giving him a handshake and a shoulder hug. 

"Whatcha need? You know anything you need I got, " Slim grinned at him. 

His teeth were in poor condition due to excessive smoking, but he didn't care. 

"I just need a little blunt real quick." Dan could feel his tremors. 

"Hey Jimmy, get my guy here a stick, " Slim ordered. 

"Yes, boss!" Jimmy, a boy no older than seventeen replied back. He seemed new. 

Less than twenty minutes later, Dan had smoked four blunts. He was on his fifth. 

He took a short drag and sighed—it was one of pure satisfaction. 

His tremors were long gone. 

By the time Dan left the place, it was already past midnight. He dragged himself up the stairs to his apartment. 

Locking the door, he removed all his clothing, save his underwear and threw them in the laundry. 

He brushed his teeth and went back to the bedroom. 

He removed his glasses and placed it by his bedside drawer. He fell face-first into his bed and moments later, his soft snores echoed in the small apartment. 

√√√√ 

The next day, Dan woke up feeling discouraged as usual. 

He sighed deeply. 

He sat up and grabbed the hand mirror by his bedside drawer and examined his face...it was blurry. 

He rolled his eyes. 'His glasses.' 

He reached for his glasses and put them on. 

His chestnut hair and boring hazel eyes came into view. He spread his teeth wide—they were pearly white. 

No one would have guessed he was a smoke addict. 

His teeth were one of the decent things about his entire features and he really worked hard to keep it that way. 

He was also 6'3—another bonus. 

His alarm went off. He turned it off and checked the time...it was 6:30 am. He sighed. 

He hated how he always woke up before the alarm. 

He laid back down and closed his eyes. 

The thought of going to shower filled him with such dread...because that would mean getting out of the comfort of his bed. 

Apparently, he couldn't always have his way. So, he dragged himself out of bed, brushed his teeth and took a quick shower—all in the span of ten minutes. 

He grabbed his phone, poured his cat—Tom—some leftover Chinese take out from two nights before and went out through the door. 

His apartment was on the fourth floor. The elevator was busted so he had to walk all the way down. 

Where he worked—Elaine's Bookshop—was not that far from his apartment, which was something he was really grateful for since he didn't have a car. So he walked there every morning. 

That morning was particularly cold, so he'd worn his coat. 

Fifteen minutes later, he got to work. He hanged his coat and looked around for Philip. 

Unsurprisingly, Philip was already at work. 

Dan secretly wondered if Philip slept in the store. He dismissed the thought with a smile. 

"Morning, Philip." 

Philip squinted at him. 

"Well, morning to you." 

"Is Elaine here yet?" Dan asked as he signed in. 

He then sat behind his counter at the reception. He didn't wear a cap. 

"Hey, has that girl been in here again?" Dan asked Philip. 

"What girl?" Philip asked clueless. 

"You know, the one from yesterday?" Dan averted his eyes. 

A smirk was plastered on Philip's face. 

"You mean the cute one that bought the two best sellers, " he stated. 

"Yeah, " Dan said quietly, placing his pen beside his register, then he looked up at Philip. 

"Actually, she literally just left 30 seconds before you walked in, " Philip said. 

Dan's eyes widened. 

"Really?" 

"Yes. She came for a few more christian books, and then she asked for you." 

"R-Really?" 

"She said, 'Where's the cute, quiet guy I saw yesterday?'" 

Dan's cheeks flamed. 

"And?" he asked eagerly. 

"Aaaaand...nothing." Philip deadpanned. 

"What do you mean nothing?" 

"I'm kidding, no one's come by the shop." 

He closed his eyes. 

'Calm down, Dan." 

"Whatever, " he muttered under his breath and went back to his counter. 

The bookshop was pretty cosy, he'd always liked the warm lighting and the systematic arrangement of the books by genre. 

There were even a used book section and a cafe where people just came to read and enjoy themselves. 

"Sorry, dude, " Philip said smirking, not sorry at all. 

"You're an a*s, " he said, propping his elbows on the counter and leaning his chin on his hands. 

'Breaking news, a 25m flood has ravaged the entirety of the city of California leaving thousands dead. One as terrible as this has never been see-' 

Dan switched off the TV. 

"Hey, I was watching that!" 

"Not anymore." Dan hated the news, or rather, he hated bad news, which was all they've been watching and hearing for the past year. 

He'd lost his entire family to the plagues. It was a time he'd never forget. 

He was all that was left of his family. 

"Dude, you can't keep killing the TV every time the news comes on, " Philip groaned. 

"Actually, I can. I'm in charge of the remote remember?" 

"Suit yourself, thank God for the internet." Philip picked out his phone and began scrolling through. 

Dan shrugged and went to put on his gloves and apron. 

He began his usual indexing and arrangement of the new books just delivered to the shop. 

He arranged them by genre and best sellers. 

After about two hours, he was done. 

He coughed. 

He was asthmatic and the dust kinda got to him. He removed the nose mask. 

He sighed and began climbing down from the ladder from the impossibly tall bookshelf. 

"Um, hello?" Dan heard someone say from under him. 

He'd turned too fast and lost his grip on the ladder, falling off. 

 His back hit the cedar floor, hard, his glasses coming off in the process. 

He groaned in pain. 

"Oh my God! I'm so sorry." He heard the voice, which sounded too high pitched for his ears. 

"A-Are you okay?" He turned his head and saw someone kneeling by his side. 

Everything was blurry. The only thing he could make out were two small green blobs he guessed were eyes. 

He tried lifting himself up. He groaned out as pain exploded at the back of his head. 

He tried reaching for his glasses. 

"Here." The small voice said. 

He cleaned them and wore them. 

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean—" 

"What do you want?" he unintentionally snapped. 

Her eyes widened in surprise. He stood and placed a hand on his left temple—it was bleeding. He did the same for the back of his head and thankfully, there was no blood. 

He sighed, lifting the fallen ladder with his other hand. 

He was thankful the ladder wasn't broken. 

"U-um, I'm kind of lost and I need directions, " she said. 

Dan searched the aisles for Philip but he was nowhere to be found. 

'Where's the douche when you need him?' 

"Hello?" the girl said softly. 

He turned to her, annoyed. 

"What do you want?" he repeated thoroughly annoyed. 

"I-I need directions." Now that he had his glasses on, he observed her. 

She had long, auburn hair with striking forest green eyes. 

She was dressed for the cold weather and had on a head warmer. 

He couldn't help but notice she was pale. Too pale. 

Dan huffed. 

"Do I look like a map to you?" he snapped at her. 

The girl's eyes widened and then they lowered. 

"It's alright, I'll go. I'm sorry about your head, " she said, before turning and walking to the entrance. 

She was stopped by Philip. 

"Hello." 

Philip walked towards her. 

"How may I help you?" 

"What seems to be the problem?" Philip asked. 

"It's nothing, I just came in to ask for directions, " she said. 

"It's fine, your colleague already helped me." 

"Colleague?" Philip said puzzled at first and then he turned to Dan who then joined them. 

"Thanks for the help." She averted her eyes and with that, she left the shop. 

Philip faced Dan and glared at him. 

"That's a potential customer you just scared off." 

Philip's brows furrowed. 

"What did you do?" 

Dan's eyes widened. 

"What did I do? 'What did she do?' is what you should be asking." Dan huffed. 

"She just walked out with tears in her eyes. What did you say to her?" Philip pressed. 

Dan gritted his teeth in annoyance, frustrated. 

"Will you just shut the fuck up? She was the one who came in here asking for directions like a two-year-old." 

"Who the hell doesn't know how to use their phones to ask for directions?!" 

"Dude, chill, " Philip said calmly. 

"I am chill, you're just annoying me right now." 

Dan walked right past him and grabbed his coat. 

"Where the hell are you going?!" Philip yelled after him. 

"Anywhere but here." 

He needed a smoke, quick.
