The price of sixty-five dollars surprised Kyro. He hadn't expected for her to actually care about his money. Or well, that a woman could buy anything with this pitiful amount. From what Gale always said, a couple thousand was barely enough for a dress, let alone matching shoes and a purse. 

The girl seemed satisfied, though. She had been smiling when he came in. 

"Come, I'll show you your room." He pushed off the table and left the study, but the girl was lagging behind. When he turned around, he saw that she was still staring at the monitor. "It's not gonna be delivered faster just because you will it so." 

"Ah, yes!" she replied in a hurry, turning to him with a guilty expression. Just what had she been thinking about? 

He led them to the three guest room and chose the one that was almost never used. "Gale stays in this one while the one next to it is prepared for unexpected guests. So take the one on the right. I don't think anyone's stayed in it in a long while." 

Inside the room, there wasn't much besides a bed, a dresser with a large mirror, and a wardrobe. Everything was slightly dusty from disuse, but besides that, there were no problems. 

"Thanks," the girl said with a smile and shooed him out. "I'm fine, no need to supervise me. Go now, do whatever you want." 

He didn't resist too much and left, but nothing seemed to require doing at the moment. Instead, he just sat down and thought about how his life had derailed in such a short amount of time. 

It was crazy to allow a random woman to freeload in his house—and he would have never done it under normal circumstances—but this one interested him. Turning into a fox seemed impossible, yet it was happening right before his eyes. On top of that, the girl didn't seem to mind it whatsoever. 

He found it hard to believe that she had never turned into a fennec before. Otherwise, how could she be so calm? Based on her words, she didn't look for a way to change until the moment she became human again. 

Yet she was clearly a person of the modern era. There was history of her life in the UK, and she was familiar with things online, so clearly, she hadn't lived as a fox in some desert or at someone's home as a pet. Not for overly long, anyway. 

Why did she not want to turn back then? It was hard for him to imagine a situation when a person would prefer to abandon everything they care about and instead embrace a life of someone's pet. Maybe if someone lived in utter hell, but from what he learned, she had a simple and calm life. Nothing extraordinary. 

And she didn't even look sad. Even though she was fearful of him now and somewhat subdued, the words he would have used to describe the fennec were energetic, spirited, and the like. 

'Just what is she hiding?'

In the room, Iris quickly dusted everything off and opened the window for some fresh air. After that, she fell on the bed and stared at the ceiling.  

Finally, she would have a whole bed onto herself, but she wasn't happy. The room wasn't large, just perfect for a bedroom. It should have brought her joy; this was something that reminded of home. But it didn't make her happy.

Even though she knew Kyro and Lucifer were just outside, she sensed the familiar loneliness enveloping her like an old friend. Although she fought against it, saying that the seven day deadline meant nothing, her subconsciousness didn't buy it. 

Somewhere deep within, she knew that it was a game over. Even if she postponed it this time, she would soon have to go back. Her old life would restart, with the same friends, the same studies, the same house, the same chores. 

Could she return to that?

"You'll have to," she told herself, rolling on her side and pulling her knees close. Now that she turned back human, her future was sealed, and this room was the most obvious harbinger of change. 'You've survived before, you'll just have to make do once more.' 

The words rang hollow in her mind, but they were all she had. 

The next morning, Kyro went out to get take out for breakfast, and they ate in silence. It wasn't awkward, but it wasn't comfortable, either. Silence was fine when she was a fox and couldn't communicate. It was normal. But now? She wasn't so certain. 

After breakfast, she cleaned up once again, and Kyro left for his study. She stayed in the living room and turned on the TV. There was nothing good on, but she didn't dare to go and disturb Kyro to ask for a stream of something online. 

A few hours later, the doorbell rang, and Kyro picked up her package. She grabbed it from him like a starving man would bread and disappeared into her room. Not ten minutes later, she came out wearing her new dress. 

"Let's go outside!" she suggested, peeking her head into the study where Kyro had returned. 

"What?" He looked up at her in surprise, clearly having not expected her intrusion. "Why?" 

She beamed at him. "I want to get out of the house! Without a leash and when I'm not running for my life from kidnappers." She clasped her hands before herself in a half-praying gesture. "Pretty please?"

Iris didn’t think much of her life until one day she found herself in the body of a baby fox. Before she could wrap her head around it, she was bullied by a kid and saved by a handsome stranger. It was almost like a fairy tale ending, just why is she still a fox?! Is there like a certain duration or will she need to stay like this forever? No way!

sorry guys I'm really sick so there's no chapter today. however I have to update at least 1500 words a day or I'll not be getting paid month end. so this is the first two chapters of a virtual reality massive multiplayer online role playing game I had planned. Leonardo stared hard at the teaser trailer for After Earth online, it was just elaborate words on a holographic screen, and it was released months ago so it didn't matter much, however he just couldn't help but to watch it again, especially now that the pod was lying down in his bedroom and the servers for the game were about to open in the next fifteen minutes.

Unlike how stories like this go, after earth online was not some big revolutionary VR game, it was amongst the hundreds released every year, so it was sure to be buried under the waves of other games. Except of course this particular game was catered for the older audience, from what the beta testers had posted, any from racism, murder, burglary, ****, corruption, serial killers, alien invasions, demonic invasions etc. were the norm.

There were no filters, curse words could be used, female players and the NPC AI's could be raped or killed. And it would all be experienced in its full, bloody and gory details. That information alone had made After earth online the most controversial game of the year, its release was delayed due to many petitions against it for its very brutal contents, and while many people protested against it, there were many who wanted it to come to light.

This was a chance for their deepest and darkest monsters to be unleashed, there was no need to role-play like other games, the evil or the good in you would be brought to the forefront and you could live just like you want. Restrained and unrestrained by the rules and laws of society. Leo was playing this game because he really didn't have a choice, there was a potential to earn money from every game in the Market, and After Earth online was the cheapest Leo could get.

For one even in 2072 Africa still had the highest rate of poverty in the entire world, and being born to poor parents in Nigeria was even worse as the nation had gone through several civil wars in the past thirty years. It was only just settling down recently and rejoining the rest of the world. But its economy has been severely impacted with only the rich and their ilk having control over the money flow.

Crime was rampant, and it was a horror show as Nigeria had really become a third world country, but even that 21-year-old Leo had been able to make ends meet for himself and two younger siblings. And now more than ever he needed to find a way to make more money, his nineteen-year-old sister had been a victim of rapist a few months back, and now she was an expectant mother.

Their younger brother Collin was a budding soccer player and had a chance to be drafted into the junior national team in three months, except of course to get a spot in the draft pick you needed to buy you way in. the 15-year-old was devastated, but Leo was not going to let them down, after earth online was the only choice he now had. While he wasn't so sure about equipment, he knew VR games with modern themes thrived on materials and information, and that's what he was going after.

He needed to buy the spot for the draft pick for his younger brother, and raise enough money for his younger sister and her baby. Especially now that his sister also had to apply for a scholarship to study off world at a prestigious university on one of earth's colonies on the moon. A chance to change their family's situation and it was looking right at him.

The odds were stacked against him though, frankly speaking he would be competing against players from countries like the USA, India, China, Korea, The UK, Russia, Australia etc.

 basically any country other than an African country have proven themselves as the best of the best when it comes to the games they play. But he was not really aiming for the best in this case, he just wants to make some money before perhaps making a transition to a better game after building a reputation.

Leo read through the scant few information posted on the game's official page before getting back up to his feet. He walked towards his sleeping sister and moved the book she had placed on her head to the table besides her. He looked at her bulging stomach and smiled, he wanted that child to be born into a world without stress, free like the wind and able to reach the sky in a single leap. He shifted his gaze to the family photo that was a few years old, a deceased mother and a father serving a life term for crimes he didn't commit.

So many wrongs to make right and so many futures to make brighter, he had so much that he had to take care off and he was desperate. So while other players might have skill and talent none of them had even a smidge of what he did, and that was desperation. Nothing and no one would stand in his way, he swears it.

CHAPTER TWO:

Leo chose yes as the blue screen in front of him changed completely and he found himself facing a mirror image of himself. There was a plethora of races to choose from and a chance to hybridize certain races. At the moment not much was known about the game, so whether or not going the hybrid path would mess with you build down the line, not much was known. But Leo knew exactly what he wanted.

He needed to be fast and silent to be able to get the information he wanted, he wanted to go the Anti-hero route, being able to mingle with both the villains and heroes. He didn't need to be in the spotlight, but he wanted to be able to get rewards from committing crimes and stopping them should the need arise. So he needed speed and silence, but at the same time he needed a significant amount of power to be able to defend himself. The body has to be adaptive too, in the end that brought him back to the human selection, but he was able to hybridize combining it with a similar looking humanoid race.

That worked well for him, with the Techronman race he would be able to get information from anywhere and he could even control machines. These was the best possible outcome, at least for now anyway. As soon as he accepted the race, the mirror in front of him changed, and he was looking at himself with silver hair, and protruding cheekbones with a single blue band running from his cheekbones to his jaw.

He looked like himself, but honestly if someone who knew him saw him like this, he could guarantee that they wouldn't recognize him. His height remained the same as 6'2 and he was still lanky due to lack of proper nutrition. His fingernails were also silver, and he was dressed in grey cotton trousers and shirt along with a grey coat with a hood and some black boots. He looked like those padawans in those old Star Wars movies, he hoped the clothes were just there for reference, the colors were a bit too dull for his taste.

What came next was the choice for an ability, there were a few categories from which someone could choose his or her ability. And a person could only have one, combine it with your chosen race and you would have a few tools under your belt. The categories were Magical, Cosmic, Technological, Scientific, and mutation. For Leo technological and scientific were out.

Technological had to be about those that made their techs or had their abilities from gadgets, the scientific were those who got their abilities from experiments like Spiderman, the incredible hulk and captain America.

 His race actually covered the technological aspect, and in his opinion the scientific hardly had a chance for growth, of course this was a game, but he didn't want to turn I to an enormous green rage monster whenever he gets angry.

Cosmic sounded cool, but he was not one for it if he had to be honest. He wanted to stay out of the limelight, which left mutation and magic. Now he could go for mutation which was actually the best, he could get speed or invisible mutation which would help him, but then again he would be limited by a single mutation. He wasn't aiming to be the best or the strongest, so he didn't want to focus on a single build, what he wanted was to be the jack of all trades who can get out of any sort of situation.

His hybrid race was a living breathing walking electric rod, the [Shock] skill made sure of that. So for sure he had the mutation angle down. Which left magic, and so he chose that. Magic was divided into a few different categories too. There were mages, wizards and witches which was greyed out for males, sorcery, warlocks and mystics. 

Mystics were the crystal ball see I to the future read your palm kind of magic, mages were catered to the elements, wizards were the reality altering kind of magic, like illusions and magically locking a door you can't open. Sorcery was basically the scientific part of the magic side, with rituals and potions and catalysts needed for spells. Warlocks were the bad guys, the summoned familiars and demons and did the bad juju. And that was why he chose the warlock route, because unlike the others, he wasn't limited to just using his magic to fight as he could have companions and could use weapons as warlock spells are near instant though they don't have as much damage.

After that all he had to do was just a name… that alone was hard if he had to be honest. Unlike most gamers he had grown up being taught that names had powerful meanings, that there was power in a name no matter how obscure or generic it sounds. He thought back to the reason why he was here, why he was doing this, to his family and to his sister's unborn child, he smiled as he decided on his name.

Some time in the future Humanity conquers death! life continues, on and on in the endless stretches of a virtual paradise called Elysium. or at least that's what the Brochures used to stay.

Now Rezar is spawned in a prison mine to serve a sentence of all eternity and all reincarnations as a slave. and all for a crime he doesn't remember commiting but knows that he did, now forced to live based on consequences from a life he also doesn't remember. but he tries to look at the bright side, there's much to achieve........the only downside would be the fear people have for him, after all.........who would want to shake hands with the Son Of Death.

Bernard who had just woken up mused about his dream last night. He turned around on his bed and stretched for his phone which he always keeps beside his bed on a table placed extremely close to the bed. His hand searched for some seconds but failed to find his phone forcing him to fully open his eyes. The first sight after opening his eyes was a long mirror placed at the corner of the room. The first reaction was to wonder when a mirror was placed there followed by a scream which never made it out of his mouth😱.The mirror reflected a youth around the age of 14 years though Bernard could instinctively tell that he was 16.

As he fought the urge to grin, a transparent screen appeared in front of him with a page open and a home button at the top left corner and a flashing package box at the bottom right corner. The page had three bars with words written on top of each bar.

With that command, Bernard felt as if he had been dipped in an artic pond naked and felt as if the world was shaking. After a few minutes, he regained his awareness along with new memories. Though instead of it being totally new memories, it was more of slight changes made after making different decisions. 🤔 Did the game foward time? The most obvious changes is the promotion of my parents in their occupation. My father has moved from a senior high school teacher to a University lecturer at UG and mother from a primary school to SHS teacher. Memories showed that unlike my last life were i refused my uncle's offer to come to the UK but instead  continued my education in Ghana, this time i came to the UK to continue my education and have a better chance at fulfilling my football dream.

From my trip down memory lane, it seems that the have been no butterfly effect or something similar so far since Ghana still self destructed in the 2014 world cup due to internal conflict and bad management. That world cup looks set to continue being a thorn in Ghanaian football lovers memories even though consolation could be drawn that our team was the only challenge for the eventual winners of the tournament. And we might have even won if not for the bad decision making of J. Ayew. Barcelona and Chelsea are winning their league and everything is happening just as before.

All those memories pale in comparison with the information that i have registered for the UK football trials in Manchester and it is scheduled for the weekend which is three days away. This piece of awesome news made me break into the zanku dance which was a new afropop dance craze before my miraculous second chance.  After a few minutes, thumps were heard at the door. Someone was knocking on the door and Bernard already figured out who it was. He shouted enter just as his uncle, Richard opened the door. A man in his thirties entered the room with a slight smile hanging on his lipsn He cleared his throat as he asked , you seem to be in a good mood? Bernard smiled awkwardly as he replied ; it just hit me you know that after all these years about to have my first trials and hopefully get picked by a scout. Hmph as if it that easy to get picked out of hundreds of people, came the discouraging words from my cousin whom i am 5 years older though he doesnt want to admit it just because i am not that big.Uncle Richard turned around to leave pausing beside his son who was standing in the doorway, ' just be confident and calm your nerves during the trials and everything will be fine'.  STORY AND FULL SCREEN PLAY 

 
 

 At many States/Countries especially in UK, beggars earn substantially good money. 

 There are big numbers who earn millions of moneys through begging profession. 

 These people live a lavish life. 

 Tax authorities never touch these people. 

 Beggars are of various types. Some are small time beggars. 

 Some are special type beggars. 

 Some are full time beggars. 

 Some are professional beggars. 

 Some are broker beggars. 

 

 Most of the full-time beggars and professional beggars even evade tax payments. 

 For this begging profession, there is no age limit. 

 Even yudult (those who turn from ‘youth to adult’ are called ‘yudult’. take to begging profession. 

 Some youth also begs for their livelihood. 

 Aged and helpless people beg for their bread and butter through various means. 

 One beggar at a nearby mall, one ‘middle-aged beggar’ sitting leisurely on the platform, keeping a small money pot nearby to his side, wearing a black cooling glass, smoking a cigarette and reading English newspaper. 

 The beggar did not have any shirt and was only wearing a torn banyan. 

 The beggar had a short. Pedestrians were surprised by seeing the beggar’s pose of sitting style and reading look at the English newspaper. 

 

 Pedestrians thought for a while, about his pleasantness, happiness and comfortably sitting style. 

 Pedestrians instantaneously, told the co-passenger about the beggar’s style of reading the newspaper. 

 The beggar looks to be of ‘no worry’ at all. 

 The beggar looked like having total peace of mind. 

 On another occasion, the XYZ observed at a “X’ road traffic signal point near the Court mall, that a group of youth, holding small hundies, begging from all the passersby including pedestrians. 

 When a Pedestrian asked the purpose, the youth who were moving here and there at the mall’s ‘X’ road told that they are collecting money for the help of under-privileged and disabled children/people charity purpose. 

 The Pedestrian observed several times on several days about this type of begging by youth, who were wearing good dress. 

 When the Pedestrian enquired about this type of money begging, the Pedestrian was told that there was a racket behind this. 

 Also, it was told to Pedestrian by the locals, that they earn millions of amounts, by doing this begging. 

 The Pedestrian was surprised for this type of earning huge amounts. 

 All this was happening well in front of the Traffic Police Constables. 

 It looks, that this is the easy way of earning amount. 

 For this type of begging, there are no permissions required. 

 There is no time limit for this. 

 There is no lunch hour. 

 Even on rainy days, these types of activities go on by wearing rain coats and umbrella. 

 At some places, street children also beg from all the passersby. 

 It looks that there is no control over this begging system 

 The begging is of many types. 

 Begging for personal gains, begging for institutions sake, begging for collective purpose, begging for charities purpose and begging for daily enjoyment purpose, has become a regular feature. 

 It is generally observed that regular daily beggars including ladies beg for money at railway stations, bus stands, in the local trains, cinema halls, function places, malls and at many places including at medium size hotels and Churches/Temple places. 

 Of course, it is a pity about these beggars. 

 But, what to do? 

 

 Many rehabilitation centers, NGO centers and the Government to take up this matter, for eradication of begging by providing an alternative earning for these helpless beggar’s, fancy beggars and professional beggars. 

 Most of the money is spent on consuming liquor, viewing cinema etc. 

 Beggars, never habituated to work for salary because the amount received as weekly/monthly salary is not suffice to meet their needs. 

 Therefore, the money received through begging is unlimited and enormous. 

 If this is the situation everywhere and unchecked this type of menace, one has to think about the eradication of begging habit and remedies in future. 

 Local government to set up the rehabilitation center’s for beggar’s purpose. 

 Measures are to be taken to discard this type of begging menace. Government with the help of NGO’s is to work out strategies to curb this type of menace. 

 Media, TV channels and other nodal agencies have to come forward to bringing these issues to the notice of the Government for rehabilitation of beggars and there should be Plan of Action for eradication of this type of begging. 

 Respective Municipal Corporations also to work out for help to establish rehabilitation centers for beggars’ purpose and to bring them on par with normal persons. 

 In some western countries, begging on roads is banned. 

 Of course, they are western countries. 

 We have to work and evolve various strategies to eradicate this begging system. 

 Some types of suitable Legislation are to be passed for total eradication of begging system. 

 For this, to streamline, it could take some time. 

 But, in the meantime necessary and appropriate ‘awareness’ program is to be brought in the minds of beggars.

Apartment near Jiaotong University

Xinya waited for Terry's arrive, then she received a call from him "You arrive? Okay I'm at the apartment i will raise my hand. Oh there you are!" Xinya then waited for Terry to approach her.


Terry saw Xinya raising her hand with his eyesight reached ten million times he clearly see her. "Hey Xinya it's been 3 months since we last talk online!"

Xinya hears Terry's conversation but she looked at other woman
"Yeah it's so nice to see you, so who is this woman beside you? I never knew you could have a girlfriend haha!"


Terry wanted to explain it but got interrupted by Valerie. "N-no I'm not his girlfriend, we just met like 10 minutes ago in UK!" With blushed cheek Valerie hurriedly explaining to Xinya.

Xinya was confused, 10 minuter ago?!
"What? 10 minutes ago and in UK? You're kidding me right?"


Terry sighed and then looked at Valerie "huft, i told you not to tell her that we just met like minutes ago, well whatever i just need to explain it to her." Terry then introduced Valerie to Xinya and they went into Xinya's apartment room.


Terry and Valerie was surprised by how mess her room is. Terry then says "What the heck is this room Xinya? You alright?"

Xinya forgot that she didn't clean her room 
"Uhh haha, i forgot to clean my room when I'm searching for my passport." She explain with an embarrassed face.

Terry didn't ask where she wanted to go.

"What you two waiting for? Let's go in! Make your self at home, even though it's a mess." Then Terry and Valerie went in with a complicated face.


Then Terry started to explain the accident that will happen in some minutes.


Xinya was scared and didn't believe what Terry said, well people might not believe something that didn't exist. Well it is now.

"You joking right? Are you playing games until late again and hallucinating? It's impossible right?"

Terry sighed and talk once more "Xinya i know this is hard to believe but it is the truth, well actually in the past days i obtained kind of power that people can't imagine, i can't explain it to you for now though." Terry then remembered he still can impart her a cultivation technique.

"I'm gonna give you something, you often read xianxia novel right? Well I'm going to impart a cultivation technique to you."

Xinya was taken a back because xianxia novel is her favorite novel genre, she always wanted to be a cultivator. "Is that real? Then quickly impart it to me!" Xinya was so excited that she forgot that she was so scared just a second ago.

Finally Terry imaparted the same cultivation technique that Valerie cultivated and then Xinya start sitting cross legged.


5 minutes passed

It only takes 5 minutes for Xinya to feel the Energy inside her body. "Wow, i never knew i would be a cultivator like in xianxia novel! And this, this power i can feel it, I'm more stronger at least 200 times stronger! Hey Terry why don't you tell me that you have a cultivation technique?"


Terry didn't hear it wrong, she said that she is 200 times stronger than before. Terry then asks Xerus "What's this mean Xerus? Can you explain it to me?"


Xerus give Terry a brief explanation. "[Well miss Xinya is from China and cultivation technique originally from China, that explains that she is more profound with it.]"

"Does it mean that if i have the Chinese blood my power would've been more powerful? Not 10 million times?"

"[Yes master, if you have Chinese blood in you, your power will be 100 million times stronger. But sadly you can't change your bloodline. But don't worry master you still have the God's race in you, and usually a person with the God's blood will have a slow improvement in the start but it will get faster later on."

With a disappointed face Terry then forgets it, and he remembered that he has a God's blood so that's a relief for him.

Terry looked at Xinya with satisfaction "Well you're stronger than Valerie so you will be protecting her when bad things happen."

Xinya nodded with a satisfied look
"Un!"


Suddenly there's an earthquake with 6 magnitude "[Master i think the first phase will start.]"

With a panic face Terry asked hurriedly "What do you mean?"

Xerus then exlain it with a straight tone
"[It means the being who tried to go to this dimension is starting to tear the space so when the being finished tearing the space the gate will start opens.]"

Terry thinking for a while then come into a conclusion "So do you mean UK is in a danger state?"

"[Yes, with my calculation in 15 seconds UK will just be a ruin.]"

Soon after the earthquake start fading and the faces of the two girls start a composed state. Xinya then says with little sweat on her face "Finally the earthquake had. faded, i don't think this apartment can hold any longer."


"[Master i think my calculation is wrong, i didn't expect that the Dimension gate will be opening this soon. and there's a living being that approach you with a fast movement.]"

Terry Flint likes to read xianxia novel. one day when he plays a browser game an ad start appearing with words that says.


"[ What is the most thing you wanted?]"


"What kind of ad is this..."

Bert brought Zane a change of clothes and some documents to go over. While Zane showered can changed Bert visited with Bella.

"How are you feeling?" 

"Everyone keeps asking me that. I am fine."

"That's good. So Dad tells me you seen mom when you died." he said.

"Yah, she talked me out of staying with her." Bella said.

"I'm glad she did." Bert squeezed Bella hand, "I don't know what we would do with out you."

"Mom told me to tell you the little red will be a handful but a blessing but she did not mean the child." Bella said.

"She is talking about Lily. She is a handful glad mom likes her." Bert laughed.

Bert did not stay long he needed to get the documents back to the office and he needed to complete what Zane needed done.

Betty was the last one to visit that Bella needed to see.

"I won't ask how your doing I hate when people ask me that." Betty said.

"Well I'm fine now really. I have a message for you from mom." 

"What is it? Is she disappointed in me?" Betty asked.

"She said and I quote, 'Tell Betty I am proud of her for taking on special kids that will change the world."

"Really she is proud and she likes my kids. Do you really think they will change the world."

"Mom is always right." Bella said.

After everyone was gone Zane pulled up a chair next to Bella and continued her story.

◇◇◇♡♡♡◇◇◇ THE LAUGHING HIPPOPOTAMUS cont.

The hippopotamuses were afraid to look upon it, and bowed their heads between their legs. 

"We come, O Glinkomok, to implore your mercy and friendly assistance!" began Uncle Nep; and then he told the story of Keo's capture, and how he had promised to return to the black man. 

"He must keep his promise," said the creature, in a voice that sounded like a sigh. 

The mother hippopotamus groaned aloud. 

"But I will prepare him to overcome the black man, and to regain his liberty," continued Glinkomok. 

Keo laughed. 

"Lift your right paw," commanded Glinkomok. 

Keo obeyed, and the creature touched it with its long, hairy tongue. Then it held four skinny hands over Keo's bowed head and mumbled some words in a language unknown to man or beast or fowl or fish. 

After this it spoke again in hippopotamese: "Your skin has now become so tough that no man can hurt you. Your strength is greater than that of ten elephants. Your foot is so swift that you can distance the wind. Your wit is sharper than the bulthorn. Let the man fear, but drive fear from your own breast forever; for of all your race you are the mightiest!" 

Then the terrible Glinkomok leaned over, and Keo felt its fiery breath scorch him as it whispered some further instructions in his ear. 

The next moment it glided back into its cave, followed by the loud thanks of the three hippopotamuses, who slid into the water and immediately began their journey home. 

The mother's heart was full of joy; Uncle Nep shivered once or twice as he remembered a glimpse he had caught of Glinkomok; but Keo was as jolly as possible, and, not content to swim with his dignified elders, he dived under their bodies, raced all around them and laughed merrily every inch of the way home. 

Then all the tribe held high jinks and praised the mighty Glinkomok for befriending their queen's son. And when the day came for the Jolly One to give himself up to the black man they all kissed him good-by without a single fear for his safety. 

Keo went away in good spirits, and they could hear his laughing "guk-uk-uk-uk!" long after he was lost in sight in the jungle. 

Gouie had counted the days and knew when to expect Keo; but he was astonished at the monstrous size to which his captive had grown, and congratulated himself on the wise bargain he had made. And Keo was so fat that Gouie determined to eat him—that is, all of him he possibly could, and the remainder of the carcass he would trade off to his fellow villagers. 

So he took a knife and tried to stick it into the hippopotamus, but the skin was so tough the knife was blunted against it. 

Then he tried other means; but Keo remained unhurt. And now indeed the Jolly One laughed his most gleeful laugh, till all the forest echoed the "guk-uk-uk-uk-uk!" 

And Gouie decided not to kill him, since that was impossible, but to use him for a beast of burden. 

He mounted upon Keo's back and commanded him to march. So Keo trotted briskly through the village, his little eyes twinkling with merriment. 

The other blacks were delighted with Gouie's captive, and begged permission to ride upon the Jolly One's back. 

So Gouie bargained with them for bracelets and shell necklaces and little gold ornaments, until he had acquired quite a heap of trinkets. 

Then a dozen black men climbed upon Keo's back to enjoy a ride, and the one nearest his nose cried out: "Run, Mud-dog—run!" And Keo ran. 

Swift as the wind he strode, away from the village, through the forest and straight up the river bank. 

The black men howled with fear; the Jolly One roared with laughter; and on, on, on they rushed! 

Then before them, on the opposite side of the river, appeared the black mouth of Glinkomok's cave.

Bella had fallen asleep so Zane put down the book. He walked over to the mirror and looked in. He was not the same man he use to be.

Could someone so simple thaw his hear and turn the beast into a man?

He quickly turned. He picked up a vase and threw it.

He stormed down stairs. "Who is in charge?" he roared.

Bella stood up, "I am sir, my name is Bella Beauté, what can I help you with?" She held out her hand.

He stared at it but could not take in, "It is improper to sit out in front of my home and have a picnic. There is a park down the road eat there."

"I do apologize sir. We will do that from now on. Is there anything else?" Bella tried to keep calm.

With out a word he stormed back into his home. There was still 40 minutes for lunch so they packed up their lunch and headed to the park.

From the window he watched the little girl drive away. 'Bella Beauté... Beauté is french for beauty and she was a beauty.'
