Chapter 6. Contract (2)

Nagamo-san glanced around Rei's room as he was waiting for Rei to come with tea.

His room was really a mess and was filled with scattered pages and manuscripts.

Anyone would find it hard to sit here but Nagamo-san rather liked it.

Any book lover would find it pleasing to see an author's workplace.

Nagamo-san who had seen many previous rooms like this can tell that Rei's room was like those veteran authors.

He was finding it hard to control his curiosity to read the manuscripts in the room.

It was a manuscript written by someone who had wrote a novel like «Genius», although he didn't knew if it will be the same quality as «Genius» but he really wanted to read it.

It was his habit, he can't contain his curiosity whenever he saw a manuscript.

Although he had read thousands of books till now, it only made his hunger for books increase.

Although he wanted to read the manuscript, it would be rude to do that.

Nagamo-san controlled himself for some time but he don't know why but he was attracted by a manuscript.

It had a peculiar feature that was attracting him to read it and his instincts as a editor were telling him that he will regret it if he didn't read it now.

He subconsciously moved his hands towards the manuscript and grabbed it.

He slowly read the title and the title had already attracted him.

«Your name»

He slowly started reading the manuscript and the more he read, the more he found himself entranced in it.

Rei opened the door of his room with one hand while carrying tea and snacks in his other.

What he saw inside his room surprised him, Nagamo-san was reading a manuscript and it was non other than the manuscript of «Your name».

He was shocked to see Nagamo-san reading that manuscript and realised that he had forgotten to hide those manuscripts, he had written to practice his writing.

He quickly put the tea and snacks away and snatched the manuscript from his hand.

Nagamo-san was greatly startled when he realised that the manuscript he was reading had been snatched away.

He didn't even realised that Rei had entered the room until the manuscript was snatched from his hand, he was that much entranced in the novel.

He was also not embarrassed that he was caught reading a manuscript without the author's permission, he wanted to read the novel first.

"Re…..Rei, please let me finish that part..first"

Rei had already told Nagamo-san to speak to him casually, that's why he was talking casually with Rei but that wasn't the issue here.

"Nagamo-san, why are you reading this….without my permission"

"I am extremely sorry for that, I will even bow down if you want but please let me read your novel"

"No…I, I can't let you read it any further"

"Wh, why….please let me read it" Nagamo-san said desperately.

Rei didn't knew what to do at that time.

'What do I do? I can't let Nagamo-san read this book further'

The reason Rei didn't wanted Nagamo-san to read this book because he knew that he will request him to publish it after reading it.

But if Rei really published it, then it will be plagiarism. Although Rei will not be suspected of plagiarism as in this world, there is no Makoto shinkai to write this book.

But it will hurt his conscience as a writer. Rei had once thought of continuing his writing career with famous books of earth but he had eliminated that idea as it will hurt his conscience.

He too was a writer, although he was a failed writer, he will also be extremely angry if someone got fame with his work.

For a writer, his work was his own pride. If Rei really published the book as his own work, then he will be the same as a ghost writer.

So, what can he do now? Looking at Nagamo-san, Rei knew he will not give up until he get to read this book.

From his conversations on emails and real life, he knew what kind of person he was. He was a experienced editor with a knack of reading books.

He really loved books and he can go to any lengths to read a decent book.

He was very similar to him, if you only consider the loving books part just that he was a bit too intense than him.

Nagamo-san pestered Rei for several minutes and Rei had to finally let him read it.

When Rei finally gave him the manuscript to Nagamo-san, he literally had tears in his eyes.

'Looks like he really was curious about the novel'

In his past life, when he had read that novel, he also was very curious about the ending. 

His favourite scene was when Taki and Mitsuha have met on the top of the mountain. It was really a well written and dramatic scene.

Nagamo-san enthusiasm with the novel was only normal, it was a great novel which have sold over a million copies in Japan.

Although many people liked the anime film more than the novel, it was only because many people have seen the anime film first and later read the novel.

From a book lover perspective, it was a beautiful novel that will tell you about love, drama, mystery and how all fates are intertwined with each other.

Even it's animation had swept Japan and many countries in its frenzy.

It had created a huge boom across the world and was one of the most famous anime till his death.

He still remembered crying when he had saw the last scene of the film. He was also somewhat frustrated as he wanted to know the story after the ending.

That's kind of novel was it. It was a great ride that no one will regret sitting on.

Only seeing how Nagamo-san was concentrated on the novel and his change of expressions with every turning page, Rei can tell that he was really enjoying this novel.

Time went on and on but Nagamo-san was still fixed on reading the novel.

«Your name» was a novel with a total of 262 pages and Nagamo-san was only on the 150th page. If he really keep reading it, then it will be really late.

That's why Rei had to again snatch the manuscript from Nagamo-san and told him about the time.

He was reluctant and wanted to read more but before he can argue, the sound of door opening was heard.

The sound of someone banging on the door can be heard inside a room contained a large size bed, four straight-backed chairs, and a small wood-table. There are sheer white curtains blowing up by the wind from the open window, family pictures on the wall. Today the weather seems to be cloudy, it's not raining now but it has rained last night. 

There's a TV screen that are still playing as it was the whole night. Right now the television shows the morning news and the neatly dressed weather forecasters stated, "Most inner-city areas should see a break from rain during the day before more storms arrive tonight." 

One window were raised, a beautiful black butterfly was flying in though the open window and its landed on a human nose. 

The human is a young adult woman who sleeps while sitting on a chair, head resting on her folded hands on top of a large desk. Soft curls falling over her shoulder. A laptop open yet turn off in front of the female, whose eyelashes slowly moving against each other reluctant to open.

Feelings a little itchy, Guiana open her eyes and was shocked to see a blackish foreign object movements on her nose. Her honey brown eyes shone brightly in surprise, unique color eyes that appear to be mix with light and dark. No eyeliner rimmed her eyes but they still stand out, right now it show so much emotion. She let out a screams and fell off her chair landing on the floor with a thud. 

The butterfly after the human huge commotion decided to changes direction, heading for the 
flowers bouquet on the table by the bed and begins feeding its nectar. 

"Aiya! you scared me, but how did you get in here?" Guiana asked the butterfly doesn't really expected an answer back. 

One hand rubbing on her lower back, the other hand holding on the chair to help her stand up. She look out the window and saw its still half open. About to go closed it but stop when she hears a loud banging on the door. Changing direction she went over to open the door instead. 

"Yes, who is it? I'm coming." Guiana calling out, opened the door while yawning. Running a hand through her hair, Guiana used her fingers as a comb and push back her long bangs letting many unconquered curls sprang loose.

"Guiana!" The door opened and the attractive faced of Wendy Chan, her thirty-years old editor zoom in invading Guiana personal bubble. Her editor proceed to shake the living daylight out of Guiana until her soul nearly escape her body.

"Where is my manuscript? The deadlines is this weekend!" Wendy with dark expression shouted.

The editor, she'd a neat clean cut appearance. Well-dressed with smooth medium-length hair that reaches down to her shoulders. Guiana has to admit she envied how Wendy managed to always look so tidy, which is completely polar-opposite of the disheveled novelist. 

"Woah, okay Wendy, calm down. I promise I'll get it done tomorrow." Guiana steady herself after Wendy somewhat violent moves against her person. 

She brushed her silky black hair behind her ear and smiled sheepishly at Wendy who glared back at her. Sighings, she invited her editor inside the condo and offers Wendy some hot coffee she brewed. 

"Oh yes, but I need a lot more coffees than this, especially before I had to deal with you." Wendy let out a satisfying sighed after drinking the coffee Guiana made.

Sitting on a chair Wendy took noted of inside Guiana's room then straighten her lips in a displeased manner. 

Guiana's condo are not exactly messy but it's a bit unorganized. Stacks of disorganized papers consumed half of her desk, some even scattered across the floor.  

The television noises got her attention, she frowned but Guiana quickly pick up the remote control and turn it off before Wendy triggered and go crazy on her again. Guiana thought Wendy already annoyed with her about turning in the manuscript late and misses a few deadlines as it is. 

Wendy exploded in irritation when she see the window remained half open, "Guiana, why is your window open. Did you know it was raining last night? What if you get sick, then who is going to finish the manuscript for me?!" But then Wendy's expression stiffen when her eyes lands on the uninvited guest, which was the black butterfly on top of the flowers. 

"Guiana, when did you start raising black butterfly as pet?" Wendy asked Guiana nervously and in an peculiar tone unlike her own. 

"Not mine, it flew in just awhile ago when I woke up, why? Is something the matter?" She inquired, curious at Wendy unnatural reactions to the butterfly. 

"Black butterfly are considered a symbol of death," The sound of Wendy voice's abnormally eerie as she explains, "Maybe you don't know Chinese culture because you lived in America for too long but when a black color butterfly enters someone home. It meant the butterfly is the spirit of someone you know or loved that died and it's nearby you."

Guiana frowned,"Black is not a color."

"Is that was all you got from what I just said!"

"No, I was listening." 

Then Guiana spoke in a low whispery voice, "Now that you mentions it, the black butterfly might be my distant uncle who died in China. I heard when he was on his deathbed, he wanted to see my mom." She affected a convincing shudder, "But he died before she could make it back to see him from America. My mom often dreams of him, maybe he hasn't he drinks old Lady Meng's soup yet and still wandering around in the living's world." 

Guiana jokingly said but was astonished when Wendy actually believed her.

Wendy uneasily looks at the butterfly, "For real? Stop scaring me Gui." Her hands rubbing against each other as a sign that she's nervous, "This is seriously giving goosebumps." 

A light bulb in Guiana head seems to turn on. "Wendy, do you feels like the temperature suddenly drop, and an uncanny feeling that we were being watched?" 

Guiana quietly walks around Wendy and stop behind her. In a very low but husky voice as if suffering from a sore throat Guiana called out Wendy name then roughly grabbed both her shoulders from behind. 

Wendy jump out of the chair and piercing screamed resounding inside the room, escaping though the half open window. Birds chirping, a couple of neighbors hear the deafening sound, poke their head out to see what happen. The butterfly was startled and abandon the flowers to fly away though the open window. 

"Agh, what a pity my uncle left." Guiana said nonchalantly looking at the black butterfly wings flapping frantically left and right trying to get away.

"Guiana Lui! Don't ever do that again! You frighten the living daylight out of me, I'm too old to be scared like that." Wendy nervously rubs her hand against her chest trying to calm down her erratic heart beats, "...and close the door please, there going to be a storms tonight. Anyhow, you'll be sick for real if you keep leaving it open like that, ya hears me," She manage to finish her sentences.

"Okay, right on it." Guiana used her hand to cover her mouth trying to suppressed her chuckles, "But Wendy, you're only thirty, that's still pretty young." In a cheerful spirit she skips toward the window, shut the window closed then securely locked it. 

"Wendy darling, one thing you should know about me is that I never gotten sick in my entire twenty something years of breathing." Hands on waist, face raised up high to proudly declared.

"Never get sick? What a huge accomplishment." Wendy said with sarcasm while clapping her hands together as a mocking gestures. 

"I know right." Guiana grinning from ear to ear, "Just one of the many things I'm proud of." She completely ignores Wendy mocking tone. 

"Well, don't break your records because of this." 

"I won't, I'm very confident on my metabolism, I've never get sic--k..." Guiana takes a sudden quick breath in, her small nose keep twitching like there's an itch. 

A pause. 

The moment when the whole world and everything stop. Then comes a slow yet soft exhale from her soft pink lips like a sigh of relief that everything is normal again. 

A breathy smile follows as if she won over some small victory. She want to start talking again but then unexpectedly took another deep inhale then an uncontrollable small explosion of breath escapes itself from her mouth. 

The air propel itself so violently that it could not be stop, sniffle sound and then accompanied by more explosion of breaths.

ACHOO! ACHOO! ACHOO! 

"My un-sick-able Miss. Liu what 
did I tell you? You reap what you sow." Wendy reprimand Guiana,"Who told you be so irresponsible and not close your window when it's was heavily rained." 

"This can't be happening, but I never get sic(k)aaachoo!" Guiana said between her sneezes and running nose, then sniffles. 

"Never said never it's very likely that you are infected with a cold virus?" Open the zipper Wendy pulls out a thermometer from inside her purse .  

"How come you've a thermometer with you?" Grasped Guiana then asked in surprised. 

"Because my nephew caught a flu yesterday from playing outside while its raining so I bought an extra." she answered.

"As irresponsible as you but at least he has an excuse of being a six-years-old not twenty-six," Wendy continued to lectures Guiana while ripping the thermometer plastic cover bag. 

Guiana sat on my bed as Wendy stick the thermometer under her tongue and waited for a moment. 

Wendy took the thermometer out of Guiana's mouth and looked at the result. "100.4, congratulations! You're officially having your first fever, how do you feel?" The know-it-all maniac editor grins smugly.

"Like I been hit by a truck and it reverse back and hit me again." 

Wendy rolled her eyes at Guiana  cheekiness. "Now, where do you put your medicines? Do you even have any?" Crossing her arms Wendy gave Guiana a 'This fool don't even have medicine' looked. 

Guiana pointing a finger to her desk where her laptop laid on top. Wendy went over and took the medicine, along the way filled a glass of water from the water dispenser then handed it both over to Guiana .

"Here, drink it and sleep. I'm going to make some congee for you. Don't worried I set an alarm on your phone at five o'clock to remind you to wake up."

Guiana flashed Wendy a graceful smile, "Thanks Wendy, you're my favorite person in the whole world!" 

"By the way, are you sure the manuscript of Beautiful Mask War God will be done before the weekend over?" Wendy wanted to make sure. 

Guiana reassured her, "Yes, my beautiful mask god only need a plan to take over the city and save his wife." She swallowed the medicine and drank from the glass of water, "Then the story will happily end." 

Her editor's smile - improved mood, "Good, your story has been a major hit lately. You could be getting more bonus this year after the completion of this novel. I heard they proposed a plan to adapted your novel into a drama."

"Oh is that so? This is good news." Guiana calmly sipped on the water.

Wendy with a hint of excitement, "They we're asking your opinions on the leading actors. Says, they really are giving you face. The famous actor Zhang Fang and the most popular idol Han Suxian are rumors to be audition as the male lead role in this upcoming drama. Who do you want be the male lead?" 

"My beautiful god should be play by Zhang Fang, I'd watched many of his past dramas and he completely matches the temperance I want to portraits my warlord. Plus, he very handsome. Don't you think?" Guiana casually remarked. 

"Yes, of course but I think Han Suxian is way more handsome. He got millions fans in China and  overseas. If he were to participate in your drama, then the popularity rate would definitely skyrocket," Advised Wendy, trying to act solemn but Guiana keen eyes saw that miniature smile. It's started as a twinkle in her eyes and threatens to spread to Wendy's lips. 

"Don't tell me you are one of his fan as well?" Guiana simpered, looking pleased with herself for guessing Wendy dirty little secret. Guiana can't be believe at her age Wendy still obsessed with an idol like a teenager. As a friend, what's she going to do with such classify information? Exploit it, of course. 

Guiana always been an intelligent and astute person but most people don't know that because she'd often camouflaged it with her foolish smiles and frivolous attitudes. Guiana possesses sharp analytical eyes, since young she always been able to notices details about people and situation that others fails to see.

"How do you know? I'm a SUN, I got all his CDs and I managed to get a good seat for his concert this July though some connections, " She told Guiana excitedly like a little girl who just found out she can go Disneyland.  

"A SUN? What's that?" Guiana asked confused.

"It's Han Suxian fan club name, don't tell me you don't know who he is? Girl, did you lives under a rock?!" She exclaimed in outraged.

"Uhm I'm not really into idol. So I never saw his face or hears any of his song." Guiana blankly stated, uninterested in idols.

"You should! You be hypnotize by his voice for sure. He sound like a heavenly angel but sexy as hell," 

Guiana raised an eyebrow at her editor rare excitement.

Wendy ran enthusiastically to her purse and took out a CDs.

"There's no picture on it?" Guiana commented neutrally.

"That's because this is his newest song I just downloaded from online, the official CDs haven't come yet." Wendy sighs and looks disappointed. 

"So this is illegal stuff you are holding?" 

"Hey, I'm going to buy an official CDs once it out but it's is too hard to resist this new song." Wendy explained. 

"Oh well, go to sleep now. I'm lending this CDs to you to listen. Make sure to give it back when you are done." She told Guiana.

Guiana was going to tells Wendy that there no need but she already shoved the CDs into her hand. Guiana reluctantly take it and put it by the bedside. As Guiana's head hit the soft pillow she hears many noises of Wendy taking things out to cook in the kitchen. Moments later Guiana's eyes somehow feel heavier and heavier, until she finally close her eyes and fell into a deep sleep.  

Unknown to both women the black butterfly have not left but stayed outside the balcony as if its waiting for something.

Xandarx: You can see it from their work, it's true. Like their character has embedded into the book. This is what make them different I think.

Zenith: I know. But not everyone is as great as you show them to be. They learn from their previous works While we are still struggling to finish one.

Xandarx: Yeah, I know.

Zenith: They move on and get better that's where the difference lies. If you see any CN author who made it big, you can see that they had their share of experience before getting there, or for that matter, any author in the Western world.

Murakami: Not necessarily publishing houses only accept works they think will sell.

Zenith: The ones who get it big the first time are rare.

Murakami: So you might not see how they built up to their debut novel. Authors can have 15-20 scrapped novels b4 they debut, and the public don't get to read a single one.

Reili: Yikes.

Xandarx: Yeah.

Zenith: That doesn't make the author lose his experience of writing those scrapped novels that's the point I was making.

Murakami: But it also means that it's more like hit and miss.

Reili: True because they don't get the feedback from fans.

Murakami: They get limited feedback from an agent/editor who doesn't want to read their work.

Zenith: Yeah, but it surely is better than nothing.

Murakami: And they're left with a bunch of abstract and vague advice that they have no idea how to implement.

Reili: If they don't enjoy it, the feedback won't be as insightful.

Zenith: They can learn from their mistakes from reading their own works.

Reili: Well…

Zenith: If possible, from platforms.

Murakami: If they knew how to do that they'd fix it and publish it.

Reili: It would make the process easier if someone who enjoys the book to give them better feedback.

Zenith: It's called rewriting from scratch, and it takes a tonne of time if the author feels more interested in some other idea of his, he would do that.

Reili: I suppose so since the author being inspired will bring his book along.

VKBoy: If the ones giving review are professional editors, then they don't necessarily have to have read your work with immersion because their suggestions will still likely cover the basic flaws that amateurish writers usually make.

Reili: Point taken.

Zenith: Yeah.

Murakami: @VKBoy if they spot those errors they'll put down the manuscript after the first page

Reili: Then again, its a little bit like movie critics. They may hate the movie, but fans love it.

Zenith: Yeah.

Murakami: And then send a reply saying, "Don't send in another manuscript until you learn how to write properly."

Zenith: Professionals in the said field prefer not taking risks. Especially in movies, but books, you can keep trying.

VKBoy: Well, if there are errors in the first page itself, that's a whole different thing, lol.

Reili: True.

Murakami: No, but a good editor can tell the writing quality from just the first page even if you've crafted it perfectly, they can just tell that the rest will be shit.

Reili: You have to also take into account of one punch man. The original comic looks terrible, but the redraw made it amazing.

Zenith: That's smartness of the creator.

VKBoy: Well, in one punch man's case, it got attention from the companies after it got popular in the online communities.

Reili: So a persons writing and grammar may be terrible, but with a little editing, the story itself could be amazing.

Zenith: You can let the editor do the Shi*t and focus on your story, It works.

Overlord Venus: Yeah, solo leveling is a good example. The story is bland.

Reili: But it would also help if the author re-reads the edit to make sure the essence of their story is still there.

HavenlyJeep: Essence and core backbone.

Zenith: @Reili It depends on what the author wants, and how much work he is willing to put in.

Reili: @Zenith true.

VKBoy: Of course, some editors just butcher the style of the author.

Reili: Same but honestly I just use Grammarly and the read aloud function in word to make sure the chapter makes sense.

Zenith: You can learn about writing, grammar, editing if you truly want. It is just the question of, would you?

Reili: I'm more into thinking up ideas and writing them than editing.

VKBoy: Editing is also writing, mate. Rewriting is where real writing lies.

Zenith: It's a skill in writing a story, but your choice.

Reili: Point taken.

Murakami: You can't be a writer without being an editor.

Zenith: Editing it yourself can help you keep the heart of the story.

Reili: That being said, the more I write, the better my basic grammar became.

Zenith: You will keep the feels right.

Reili: Editing is now part of the process.

Zenith: And not make it just sound or look better, you give what the story wants
And that is a great thing.

Reili: Creative freedom.

Zenith: I want to learn grammar and revise what I learned.

VKBoy: @Zenith Learning grammar will take years, so take it slow and steady. That way, memories stick with you for longer times.

Reili: I do read mtl sometimes since I can't wait for chaps, but then I find myself reading in broken English and must stop.

Murakami: I'd like to correct that statement VKBoy. Learning grammar is easy
learning "usage" is hard.

VKBoy: lol, if you read mtl, your IQ drops. Believe me, this can affect a person's writing skill in the long run.

Reili: Definitely, which is why I stopped.

Author's Notes

I'm sure you've read this a few times in the previous chapters, but I had been reading MTL chapters for the past few years. I usually read "Completed" stories, and most of them are around 2-4k chapters each. Of course, I read the translated chapters first. After I reach the latest translated chapter, I will immediately jump to *cough* Google Translate.

Yeah~ I know. Reading chapters through Google Translate was the most…epic mistake I did in the past. I've finished World Defying Dan God, Battle Through the Heavens uhh…and a few more novels using Google Translate.

In the later years, I discovered lnmtl.com, which gave me a better translation (at least the names of the characters are not written like Cloud Che instead of Yun Che (Against the Gods). 

To be perfectly honest, If I didn't start writing, I would have continued to read these machine translated chapters even now. Reading MTL works if English is not your first language.

This is something that those with English as their main language will scoff at. However, for those who just want to read. As in reading something without worrying about anything else, then they won't care even if it's a machine translated chapter. As long as they will be able to read the NEXT chapter, then it's all good.

This is also the reason why I admire translators. If not for them, these stories that we are not aware of will not be able to grace us with their presence. I would like to thank the translators of my favorite novels like Lord of Mysteries, Release that Witch, Against the Gods, Cultivation Chatgroup, Second Coming of Avarice, and so many other titles that I won't be able to list here.

To my beloved readers, if there will come a time when you feel like writing a story of your own and you're reading machine translated chapters, please stop now. I'm saying this for your own good. 

I understand how you feel. Believe me I do, but for the sake of the story you're going to write in the future, heed my advice. Stop now, while you still have the chance. Learning how to write from scratch with broken English is a painful process.

Then again, if you find an editor who is a masochist, consider yourself lucky. Let them clean up your mess for you, so you can focus on writing your story, and learn the art of writing while you write.

He stay up all night and pass the three-day news photos with text to the editor, Hu Xiaoli once thought that he would definitely get the best report award this month. 

There is a thousand yuan bonus, and the first month's rent will be covered by then. 

He couldn't be happier, only to sleep in the middle of the night. 

The next day, he was awakened by a buzzing vibration. 

Stumbling up, glanced at the caller ID of the mobile phone,  immediately awaken from his drowsiness

"Adult Editor!" Hu Xiaoli said in excitement excitedly: "Did you see the manuscript I sent you last night ?!" 

"Saw." The editor's voice was much more dull than Hu Xiaoli imagined. 

Hu Xiaoli rubbed his eyes, and his voice went through a layer of caution carefully: "What do you think ...?" 

The other side remained silent for two seconds, then sneered. 

"You seem to have great expectations? What are these things? How many people do you think will be on the headlines for this kind of thing?" 

The aggressive and merciless words of the editor are like poking swords into Hu Xiaoli's In his heart, there was a mouthful of old blood in his throat, forcing him not to spit it out. 

The other end of the phone seemed to find that he was talking too much. After all, the other party was just a little intern reporter, and what amazing news could he expect from squatting. 

"Okay, you have a little in your mind. The overall performance of the intern is about to be released . Do you want this job? Do it yourself." but the editor is obviously not the same person as him, and what people value is performance. 

The sense of loss dispelled drowsiness. Hu Xiaoli lay down for a while, took a shower, put on clothes, and went down to eat. 

When the elevator stopped on the second floor, the elevator door opened to both sides, and the short-haired girl holding a stack of books came in. 

"Ah, Xiaoli, you haven't gone out to squat the news." The lovely girl opened her big red eyes, and the corner of her mouth raised a bright smile when she saw Hu Xiaoli. 

Her name is Xu Mengmeng, and she is an adult type of white rabbit. She is currently a sophomore in a famous university in Beijing. 

Hu Xiaoli's smile was a bit bitter. He took over half of the books in the girl's hands, and sighed, saying, "The news editor who was squatting before is not satisfied. I probably need to find another news to restore my performance this month."

 "Well, don't be discouraged, you will succeed." The girl comforted him. 

Hu Xiaoli nodded and said: "Are you heading to school yet?" 

Xu Mengmeng shook his head:. "No, I go to dinner, then went to the newspaper to donate these books, I heard that the mountains have many children do not have books to read it." 

"Then let me help you,I'm not busy anyway". Hu Xiaoli offered to help.

After entering the Fairy Mansion, Hu Xiaoli found that there was a group of big-headed stars from all walks of life in the mansion. So he became a gossip reporter who only covered real events. -

I opened my eyes from a dreamless slumber, as the sun behind me from my window woke me up. I can feel my back getting a little wet with sweat. It is summer, so the sun is warm. My eyelashes against my hair is making my eyes irritated, and some of it even went between my lips. 

I saw the room as it was lit up by the invading sunlight, papers and bottles scattered throughout the place that I never cared to clean them, because of how scarce my time is. My posters of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Bridge to Terabithia lined up on the walls. Even though I am Japanese, I read a lot of untranslated English books. Because you can sum up my life as a life full of books. I've read hundreds of books since I was a child.

I sat up on my bed and thought about this day as another day.

Another day in this body. 

A paper thin body. 

Thin enough to be satisfied by bits of food. 

Food not from my chosen profession.

But from a part-time job.

I faced at the mirror and looked at my body. It is very thin indeed. I am not at least concerned on how I look, for it doesn't matter for me. How I look doesn't affect my writing. My vision is blurry, because I needed glasses to see, but it is fine. I am still inside my familiar home. I don't need to see to find things, but memory of where I put them as they are. 

I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I put just enough to toothpaste on the toothbrush so that it could last me for a few more days. It was minty and fresh. I looked at the mirror on the sink. Damn, I look horrible. 

After I finished with it, I always comb my hair before I went to shower, because mom said that the hair is weak when wet. Combing the hair after a bath will destroy it. I always kept doing it that way, and I should tell you that my hair is the only thing that's been taken care of in this apartment. We had this family tradition of taking a good care of the hair. She even sends me shampoos and hair products to keep my hair healthy. 

I went to have a shower. It is very refreshing, and I didn't need to worry about the water being cold, for it is summer. God bless summer. I stayed there for a while after I finished putting shampoo and stuff. I don't know why, but the splashing sounds, and the flowing water on my skin makes me feel relaxed. After that, I used other hair products for my hair.

I changed into my strap and shorts so that I could get started writing a new light novel story.

I wonder if something changes. 

A change that will change my life. 

A life of repeating a day like this. 

That makes me feel like I am trapped in an endless loop of time. 

I want something to change. 

I went to the fridge to get some apple. One is enough to fill my stomach for a day. I know it's unhealthy kind of diet, but I have no choice, because I have a rent to worry about. Thinking of that, I need to work on my new story now, so I pulled a piece of A4 paper from inside the drawer of my desk, and put on my glasses. 

I am really particular about the time, so I always check it whenever I get the chance. In that way, I can be more productive. I looked at my phone, and it is 10:36 am of July 20, 2019, so I got no time to waste. I started writing. 

I don't have galleries of my friends, but only a gallery of rejected manuscripts in the shelf beside me at the right. These manuscripts were rejected only because the publisher said that I don't understand the feelings of my characters so it makes the story unnatural. 

I don't have many friends since I was a child. All I ever had was my books. Most of the time, I would sit on a bench under a tree, and away from the other kids so that I could read my book in peace. I even doubt that my classmates even remember me. 

I am amazed by the world the writers create with their imagination, and how they stir up the emotions of the readers, even if they are just written characters on a piece of paper. It inspired me to write my own story to share the wonders of fiction. 

My mother realized this, and she believed in me without a second thought. She believed that I could become a great writer someday, and that I could do great things. She gave me a big book on my 8th birthday. Tokugawa Ieyasu - the longest Japanese novel ever written in one book. I loved it, and that was the day that I decided to make her proud.

My mother and me were left by my father after he passed away when I was only two years old. I only heard stories about him from my mother, and she told every story like he never died. I know it was hard for her to raise me alone, but she didn't give up to stop my uncle interfering with my life. She said that my uncle who is her older brother is now the head of the family that owns a great area of rice fields. Arranged marriages were a thing in her family. It's even a reason why she escaped from them and lived with my father, in Chiba. She's afraid that I will not be free to choose who I loved if I stayed there with uncle. 

I am finished with my new story, and I see that it is already 3:10 pm. It is time to take this manuscript to the publishing company. I changed into my "going out" clothes - which is simply a summer sweater and a loose jeans. I don't like showing my skin, because it is embarrassing, even if it is summer. 

I went out with my manuscript inside my cheap, brown handbag. Then there were three women at the balcony of the open corridors of the apartment. They were looking at the view of Tokyo from the this floor. They are at the far right, but I could tell what they are whispering about. I acted like I didn't hear. 

"Here comes the cave woman," one of them whispered while I locked my door. They laughed softly. This happens every morning that I got used to it eventually. I don't bother to confront them as much as I hate it, unless they touch me. 

I went to climb down the stairs, because I feel uncomfortable taking the elevator with other people. I am living in the 8th floor of this building, so it's quite tiresome when going up. 

On the train station, that is a ten minute walk from my apartment, I went through one of the gates with my IC card. Then I fell in line behind the people who are waiting for the next train. 

I am passing this manuscript to a publishing company where all of my friends work (two of them, to be exact).

A train arrived and we entered, and a lot of people went out of the cabs. After that, we entered and luckily, I found an empty seat at the left side of the train, just near the door. 

I spent my time reading a light novel I bought yesterday. After a couple of minutes, I finally arrived at the train station I am getting off. Now, it is just a twenty minute walk to the publishing company. 

I saw the building, where it was based. It is averagely beautiful like the rest of the buildings here in Tokyo. I went to the entrance, and there was a guard walking around the area it is located. 

"Good afternoon, Matsuno-san!" I greeted him, while bowing. He is one of my friends in this building. I always have to pass by him everyday I went here. He is a man near the retiring age, but he was kind and always radiant because of his smile, as much as he loves his job very much. 

"Oh," he smiled at me. "Good afternoon to you too, Hattori-chan." 

I stopped for a minute for a chat. It wouldn't hurt if only just for a minute. "How's your daughter doing in school?" I asked. 

"She's doing great. And how about you? Did you finish another story?"

"Yes, I am about to hand it over."

"Good," he smiled. "Good luck, and do your best! May your work be published."

I bowed down once more and said, "Thank you, I'll do my best."

I went inside, and to the elevator. I don't like it, but I have to, so I could pass my work in schedule. My other friend is Takeda that I've known since high school. He works here as a copy editor. I always hand my manuscripts to him so he could make the leading editor check it out. I always crossed my fingers, wishing that this time I will get published. I crossed my fingers a hundred times, but none of my stories were published. I feel heavy inside everytime I do this. I would've given up a long time ago, but that's not me. I don't break a promise. 

The door of the elevator opened and I did the proper etiquette in elevators. I felt relieved after I went out. It was really uncomfortable for me even if I do it everyday.

A man standing up while reading a piece of paper in his office. The whole office was full of papers and books of different kinds. There are many notes posted on the walls, and the computer is still running. The man looked serious about his work, and shows his dedication for it. He adjusts his glasses everytime it slips while reading. 

"Takeda-kun," said someone from the other side of his small office. Takeda is the name of the man holding a paper, and he stopped what he's doing. "Hattori-chan is looking for you." He pulled a munscript from the shelf. "How long are you gonna keep her waiting?" Suddenly, he put up a smile, and went to the door. 

"Right, right," he said. 

"Waiting for you to ask her out?" said the man and laughed. 

"Oh, just shut up."

He opened it and saw Hattori brushing her hair over her left ear while looking to the side. She was startled that her glasses slipped, so she fixed it and put up a smile. while looking at Takeda. 

Takeda thought: "So cute..."

"Good afternoon, Takeda-kun," she said. "May I give my manuscript?"

He smiled and said, "Ah, of course."

"I hope I am not interrupting anything," she said while leaning to see what's going on inside. 

Takeda takes the manuscript. "Don't be like that, Hattori-chan. We've been friends for a long time. I will never hesitate to help you."

"Oh, uhh... Thank you so much, Takeda-kun."

"Don't mention it."

"Hey, TAKEDA!" said an angry woman who seems to be the boss. "No slacking off!"

He looked nervous as he answered while turning his whole body back to the office. "Yes, I'm sorry. I'll get back to work as soon as possible, Miyashita-sensei!"

"Stop being so noisy, Takeda-kun!" said a random officemate.

"I'm sorry!"

He hands her over a different manuscript while smiling nervously. He closes the door slowly and said, "I'll see you later, bye..."

"I'm sorry," she whispered. 

"Okay."

Finally, the door closed.

I really got him into a trouble. I feel guilty about it.

I looked at the manuscript he gave me.

"Welcome to the collection," I said to the it.

I don't know why I keep storing them, but I felt bad when thinking of throwing them away.

"Still not giving up," I said to myself, while crossing my fingers. 

I went home after that, and it is already dusk when I came back, because I took some time to think about another story by walking slowly. I entered my apartment, and I saw my cat. I didn't see him this morning, because he goes out sometimes through the window at the kitchen. I specifically chose this apartment so that I could keep him. Meet Akihiko, my beloved cat. He rubbed his head against my foot. I carried him up like a baby - because that's what he wants. 

He is a cat that I just found in the streets years ago, when I was still studying in college. major in creative writing. I love cats, but my mother didn't let me have one, so I decided that I will have a cat as soon as I start living alone. I thought about what kind of breed I will get, but then I saw him. He was just a little kitten back then. He was so thin and dirty, and when I took him home, I washed and fed him. His beautiful grey fur showed. 

I lied down my bed after changing my clothes, and looked up to the ceiling, while Akihiko slept on the bed. I thought about my lacking. My characters don't decide like real human beings. That's because I isolated myself from other people so I didn't have the chance to observe their actual behavior. I kind of regret that. I wish I knew earlier that writing isn't just learning from books. I have to do something about it. 

But it is time for work. 

I stood up and I realized I am shedding a tear. I didn't yawn or anything, but I definitely felt disappointed. I wiped it and went to change into my working clothes.

Hattori, a girl that aspires to have one of her light novels to be published. Her dull life where nothing ever happens changed after she met and fell in love with Ishida. However, her dreams to become a published author depends on her relationship with her childhood friend, Takeda who always have been with her and loves her. 

What will she choose? A life with her dreams or a life with her love?

Seven years later.
Ye City, Morning Post news agency.
A girl wearing black-rimmed glasses and with her hair in a top bun had dark circles as big as saucers under her eyes. She struggled to stay awake as she sent her manuscript to her editor before dropping her head on the desk.
"Tsk, tsk. Nero Zhou has been bossing you around, hasn't he? Talk about exploitation… Bleeding an intern dry…" A sleek-haired and creamy-faced guy wearing a flashy shirt, white trousers, and pointy shoes made a dramatic hand gesture, then put down a cup of coffee in front of her. "Anan, here, a coffee from Brother Dong."
"Thank you…" The woman with the top bun shifted slightly, found the straw with her eyes closed, finished the coffee, then dropped back down.
She was shaken awake minutes later. "Wake up! Anan, it's big!"
"What? Is there an earthquake? A hurricane?" The top bun was flustered.
The other person rolled his eyes. "Nero Zhou just got a tip for some big news and he's following up on it himself… He's just personally requested your service! Anan, you'll be in my prayers!"
"…"
Seeing the look of despair on her face, the other person grinned mischievously. "Make good use of this opportunity. Work hard and try to nick yourself or something on the job. Tsk, tsk, you'll get a bonus in no time."
"You have a point…"
"That's enough. Stop trying to trick her!" A tall and vigorous man came toward them. He wore a casual outfit and had a clean and mild air about him. "An Xiaxia, you don't have to go. I'll talk to Editor Zhou about it…"
"Wow, Brother Dong, you're covering for her again!"
"Exactly. Do you have a thing for Anan?"
"You people know nothing. That's how you court a girl…"
Since the others in the office had nothing better to do, they began to gossip.
An Xiaxia was embarrassed. Realizing that she couldn't let the rumor spread, she glanced at He Dongyang and said, "That's ok… I can do it."
He Dongyang pursed his lips and didn't say anything else.
Hence, the newbie intern reporter An Xiaxia followed her editor out and headed for… a high-end club.
Nero Zhou snuck her in through the staff entrance, then handed her a uniform and gestured for her to change into it.
"Hurry up!"
An Xiaxia took one look at the black dress in the bag and was dumbfounded. "Why am I wearing this?"
Nero Zhou rolled his eyes. "It's your disguise! With your T-shirt, shorts and sneakers, everyone will see that you don't belong here!"
An Xiaxia thought what he said made sense… 
When she got changed and walked out, Nero Zhou was surprised for a second by how stunning she looked. He then held An Xiaxia's hands enthusiastically. "Xiaxia, you're a reporter and reporters are willing to do anything to get their news, right?"
An Xiaxia nodded reluctantly. "So?"
"You'll pretend to be a waitress and sneak in later. After you confirm the situation inside, I'll kick the door open and snap a few shots! After that, you'll get to be the hero of the day!"
"Huh?" An Xiaxia pointed at herself. "What else do I have to do?"
"What do you think?! Run for your life with the camera! I'm too old for that! But our newspaper sales and website traffic will increase if we can return with the photos! Do you want your bonus or not?!" Nero Zhou spluttered all over her face.
So, that was the real reason for asking her to come along… 
Mr. Associate Editor, I couldn't even pass my test for the 800-meter run!
An Xiaxia took a deep breath and entered the room as if she was some warrior walking to her death. In her hands was a fruit platter she had grabbed from somewhere, which she put down on the table.
A person that had been resting on the sofa with his eyes closed suddenly opened them. His black eyes were then fixed on her.
He wasn't imagining it. It was really her!


As an anti-fan of the idol group, Starry Night, An Xiaxia is happy to spend her time online slandering lead singer Sheng Yize.

Debbie was in high spirits that day. Scarlet didn't know why her editor was so chirpy but she smiled too.

The young writer laughed. "Not much different from when I'm still in a cast... I was told that I'd still need a few weeks to get used to moving around again and about a month before I can try to walk without the splint and crutches. There are physiotherapy classes that I will be attending to help with the recovery process but it feels great not having to bear the itch and not be able to scratch it."
The editor smiled and presented the girl with an envelope.
"This is...?"
Debbie grinned. "Open it."
Scarlet grabbed a letter opener and neatly ripped it open. There was a letter addressed to Scarlet and the girl looked at her teacher.
"This...?!"
Debbie couldn't keep the wide smile away from her face. "I turned it in to a friend who is a literary agent and it was well-received. Your very first writing contract, darling. Congratulations."
Scarlet didn't know how to react and cried. Sixteen is a Gang might not be her first work but in terms of growth, it marked a significant milestone for the girl who had gained not only a precious family but a very close group of friends who didn't shun her. The fact that the publishing agent who accepted the manuscript mentioned how touching the feelings of the main character moved them made Scarlet feel as if it wasn't written in vain.
The young writer had poured her feelings and the trials they'd overcome together into this make-belief world of adventure and evil adults. While the manuscript was unpolished in the eyes of the publishing agent, they were keen to sign her up for publication because of that unique perspective and Scarlet's ability to move people with her story.
"I didn't tell them your age. This meeting might have to wait until you tell the good news to Wilmer and Orita. People normally don't get their writing contracts with their second attempt. You're very talented, Scarlet. I'm hoping to see more of your future works, there's nothing much I can teach you at this moment."
Scarlet hugged Debbie and thanked her from the bottom of her heart. Being offered a writing contract meant a lot for Scarlet. It meant that she was acknowledged and more importantly, this was something she didn't accomplish using the influence of the Wilde Family's name. Could this be the way she could repay Mrs Wilde's kindness of accepting her into their family?
The good news couldn't remain a secret forever. When Alex and Jasper returned home that day, Scarlet told them the good news. One good news multiplied into two and when Mr Wilde returned home, he called for a celebration. It turned out that there was not just one simple piece of good news. They had two unexpected but dearly missed guests joining them for dinner and another two guests whom Scarlet was happy to receive.
"Mother!" the girls screamed with joy as Jenna brought the luggage up. Mrs Wilde bent down to hug her girls with Jasper awkwardly standing by Mr Wilde's side.
"Mrs Wilde," he greeted politely and offered to help Jenna.
Claire bowed with Tina and Sue behind her. The lady butler was impressed by Claire's management of the household. The head maid did a great job despite the lack of manpower. Also, due to the short notice, Jenna was expecting some difficulty in being able to accommodate such a large group. Claire didn't seem to struggle with the new guests. The dining table was quickly modified with the table extended to fit the extra people for dinner. The maids under Claire's care were also quick to whip up extra dishes and make enough food for everyone, not neglecting to add a touch of classiness to them befitting of the Wilde Family's prestige.
Alex announced that she won an art competition that she was secretly participating in and was going to have her work displayed at an exhibit. Mrs Wilde and Jenna revealed that they would be moving over to live in Singapore for a more permanent period of time from now on so that they could spend more time as a family. Jasper's parents would also visit from time to time when Mr and Mrs Wilde had to fly for business trips.
Wilmer was all smiles as well. He had received news from Benjamin earlier that afternoon that the evidence the children collected was enough to permanently ruin Cody and Larissa. The verdict will be out next week. Danny and Elfie were here to deliver news about their findings of Anastasia.
Danny smiled and congratulated the Wilde's. "I have a favour to ask."
Immediately, the joy and laughter melted into silence. The children looked at their teacher oddly. Jasper knew about Danny and Wilmer's special relationship but Scarlet and Alex were slower to catch on. Whatever favour Danny was asking for didn't feel like something a teacher and parent could easily talk about.
"I would be taking a short leave of absence from the school due to personal reasons and in that period of time, I would like to entrust my son, Elfie, in the care of your family."
Wilmer's warm expression grew cold at once. The jokes and laughter erased from his eyes. "It's about that, isn't it?"
Danny nodded. Orita didn't look pleased but her eyes softened when she saw Elfie tense up.
"You're going to be personally acting on it?" the CEO asked and Danny nodded again, not daring to meet his friend's eyes.
Wilmer's lips thinned into a line, his eyes hard. "Orita and I don't mind taking care of Elfie for you. However, I won't accept it if you don't intend to come back for him."
Elfie looked fragile at that moment and it was Alex who held the hacker's hands to comfort him. Scarlet didn't know what was going on either but she gave Elfie a small smile trying to reassure him that everything would be alright. The adults could be relied on and even if things didn't work out, Elfie still had them and a group of very reliable friends.
Danny bit the insides of his cheeks. "I'm not abandoning him, Wilmer. I didn't adopt Elfie with the intention of abandoning him. He is my son."
Orita decided that the tension was scaring the children a little too much and quickly diffused the tension by asking Jenna to bring out the alcohol to the study so the men could talk over it. At the same time, she expertly diverted the subject away from the serious discussion by asking the children how they met Elfie.
Everyone had good news to share and interesting stories to tell about their time spent together at school. When Scarlet told everyone that Debbie sent her manuscript to an agent who found a publishing house interested in contracting her book, Orita squealed like an excited schoolgirl and immediately placed the first order of five copies that she wanted Scarlet to sign.
"You need to start practising your signatures now," Alex joked and Scarlet blushed.

The young writer launched into details about the inspiration she took and the hacker had a good laugh over some of the scenes Scarletdescribed. Scarlet's vivid imagination and good sense of humour had successfully woven the personalities of everyone in the E.C. Class into her book.
"I want to read that book, I really do. It sounds very interesting that you managed to capture everyone so accurately!" he praised.
Scarlet squirmed in her chair, embarrassed by the praises.
"That's it!" Alex declared. "I'm going to draw your first book into a comic!"
Jasper raised a brow. "Do you know how to draw digitally? I thought you were still trying to understand how paintbrushes work."
Orita laughed. "Oh, Jasper dear... there's no rush. Alex can slowly pick that up. We can employ some art teacher if she wants to speed up that process. Also, Wilmer might be planning on an internship rotation for the three of you."
That news got their attention and the heiress smiled. "Don't tell Daddy that I said this. However, Wilmer has been working hard to negotiate for the departments that would interest you most to accept you and teach you the trade. Alex will have plenty of opportunity in the future to get acquainted with digital brushes. Scarlet will have a lot of chances to learn different writing styles and the practicality of it. All three children had their eyes lit up. Elfie watched them with envy. He didn't know what an internship was but it sounded fun. "Mrs Wilde, can I join them for the internship too if I'm going to be in the care of the Wilde Family for a while. I think my programming skills might come in handy. I'd also love to have a chance to study a network and create a network system set up on a large scale."
Orita looked at Jenna who bowed at the hacker. "We will do our best to make arrangements. I'm sure many of our software developers and engineers would be thrilled to meet the mastermind behind the most recent underground raids in person. We will inform Wilmer about your wishes."
Elfie was flattered. Not many people knew about his official job or talked about it apart from Danny. He knew that Danny and Wilmer were close friends but Wilmer had never once spoken about Elfie's accomplishments before.
"Underground raid?" Alex asked and Orita smiled.
"That's a secret between your daddy, mommy and Danny. Elfie is a very talented programmer and he sometimes helps adults who need his skills which is why he is often not in school. Elfie travels a lot to help others so he hardly has any time to make friends."
Alex put a finger to her lip to indicate that she understood this should not be so easily revealed to others outside of the family. Orita smiled at her daughter's simple-mindedness and gave the other two children a sideways glance. Jasper nodded slightly to indicate that he understood because his eyes were unreadable behind his hair. Scarlet met the heiress' look with her own full of acceptance but also curiosity.
Claire knew that look. There was no mistaking it. Her young mistress would definitely find a chance to catch Elfie and interrogate him for information. Who knows, this might be the content Scarlet needed for her new book.

After getting off the phone with President Jeong-Sook Shin, Gun-Ho calculated with his electronic calculator.
"If we don't successfully find any best-selling book within a year, we won't be able to sell even 20 books and I will lose my entire investment fund of 300 million won for this publishing company. A publishing business seems to be highly risky. It is easy to get into the field, but it is extremely hard to succeed. Well, I will have to rely on President Jeong-Sook Shin's competence. It's up to her now."
 
Gun-Ho received a call from Attorney Young-Jin Kim.
"I was told that the business plan is almost done. They are currently modifying the estimated demand in the China market."

On Monday, Gun-Ho headed to his office of GH Development in Gangnam, Seoul. He was having a cup of morning coffee at his desk when President Jeong-Sook Shin came into the office.
"I didn't know you have another office here. GH Development is a real estate development company?"
"Yes, it is."
Ms. Ji-Young Jeong brought a green tea for President Jeong-Sook Shin and placed it on the table.
"Thank you."
President Jeong-Sook Shin looked at Ji-Young's face.
"Is she the person who does design work?"
"Haha. No. She is GH Development's employee. She is handling accounting here."
"Oh, really? I'm sorry."
Gun-Ho introduced Manager Seong-Il Kang to President Jeong-Sook Shin.
"Oh, he is Manager Kang. I spoke with him on the phone several times for paperwork. Hi, I finally meet you in person."
Jeong-Sook extended her hands to Manager Kang for a handshake. Manager Kang seemed to be shy.

Gun-Ho and Jeong-Sook were having a conversation when Jae-Sik Moon entered the GH Development office.

"Really? Let me take a look."
Ji-Young came to Gun-Ho and said,
"The design workers are all in the office. They are wondering if they can come to this office now."
"No, that wouldn't be necessary. We will come to that office now."
