Chapter 1: Everything I do
I woke up at 6am like every morning. Winter had already come and settled, so I had to struggle with myself for a bit to get up. The entire house was cold, yet it was better this way. I walked myself to the bathroom, took a quick shower and shaved. I had quit my job 3 months ago, yet my body still felt the need to fulfil this pointless routine.  My jobless life had given me greasy, brown hair that reached my shoulders and big bags under my eyes due to the countless nights I spent awake, doing nothing but staring at the ceiling. Staring at it, all alone in the dark with nothing but my thoughts. A minute would turn into hours, and before I knew it, it would be morning. This was my new routine, and I'm sure my demons were overjoyed fighting me every night.
Money was scarce, and my body was showing the effects of an unbalanced diet. My bones were highly visible, their shape showing under my skin. Who knows how long I could survive like this; my income was basically zero and my lifetime savings would only take me so far. I need a job, I know I do, but I also know I can't leave her alone. Not her. Not my poor Elena.
I grabbed my phone, a cup of coffee (black, should keep me awake) and made my way to Elena's room. I opened the door and fell a chill run down my spine. The room was as cold as ever. So cold, I could see my own breath. That was how she liked it, so I never heated the room. I walked to her bed and as if she had been waiting for me, she turned her head to me and smiled.
"Good morning, daddy" she said with a weak voice, underneath an oxygen mask. My daughter, Elena, whose body was frail and whose organs would work at a lazy pace, had fallen ill a few years ago and needed to stay in bed, plugged to a machine that would help her breathe every day. The image of her sitting on her bed, staring silently and mindlessly at the window had become deeply engraved into my mind.
"Good morning, sweetie" I said back, as I kissed her forehead and sat on a chair in front of her. A jobless life was a hard one, yet I found joy in knowing I could stay with her for as long as I wanted every single day. Elena, on her side, would not understand why I had so much free time, yet she didn't care about that. Daddy was home, and that's all there was to it.
"Did you sleep well?" she asked in her usual sweet tone. Not to brag, but Elena was a modest, educated young lady, even if she was barely 11 at the time. She was on her way to becoming a maiden, but for now, she was my child. No more than just a kid, but in the end, she was my kid.
"Yes. It was a long night of dreaming of the usual. Ponies and knights and dragons and me trying to rescue the princess of the Rainbow Kingdom!"
Elena let out a small chuckle. "Daddy, you know I'm not a kid anymore! You really want me to believe you dream of those things?"
"What else would I dream of?" I replied with a comically serious face. "I already have so much fun with you, there's nothing more I could dream of!". We both laughed.
I wasn't really lying anyway. Every day, I would come up with stories to tell my daughter. I would try my best to make her lose herself in a world of magic, in tales of young maidens in love, of the ordeals of knights, and sometimes I would even throw a monster here and there, in case she felt brave enough. Anything to make her escape her cruel reality. Anything for Elena.
She brushed her long, straight black hair out of her face and stared at the window once more. I never knew what she thought of when she did that, yet I could feel her sorrow. I knew she wanted to leave her room once in a while. I knew she dreamed of playing outside, singing songs while dancing to imaginary music, and trying out all kinds of new toys. Was she at the age of falling in love? Maybe, maybe not, but I knew damn well I wouldn't let no boy get near her.
As I grabbed my coffee and chugged it down before it got cold (wouldn't really take that long in here), Elena called to me.
"Daddy, how long will I stay here?" she asked. I had never heard her sound this serious before, but her shaking lips betrayed her seriousness.
"We've talked about this before, Elena. We need to wait for your little lungs to heal so you don't need to wear that mask anymore". I sounded gentle, yet a part of me felt disgusted at how easy I could lie to my own daughter.
"It's been over a year already!"
"Has it, really?"
"Yes, it has! I know, I've seen the weather change every season from my window!"
"But don't you have fun in here, playing with your dad and hearing his stories?"
"I mean…". She looked down, avoiding my gaze. "It's not like I have a bad time with you, daddy, but…I need something else. I'm not a kid anymore. I can't just play with toys and hear bedtime stories all my life!"
There's a point in the life of every parent where they have to face the idea that their kids are not…kids anymore. The moment they start thinking beyond what's in front of them, the moment they start acquiring their own personality, ideas and language. That's the moment every parent hopes never comes, yet it always does. But Elena was different, I knew it. She didn't have a normal life. I could not let her go into the world like this. Not now. Not like this. She's still a kid. Just a kid. I sat next to her and hugged her.
"Last night…" she started recounting. "I saw this show on the TV. It was about a group of girls in school and how they would do things together every day. They would walk to the school every morning together. They would form groups and do their work together. After school, they would have snacks together and even do help each other with their homework. Why can't I have friends like that, daddy? Why?". She looked at me, her eyes all red and small hands shaking as she turned them into fists, as she was trying to control herself from crying once again.
I had no words. I could not explain to my daughter how the possibility of her leaving her bed any time soon was close to zero. I could not explain how her youthful school life was nothing but a dream. I could not explain how she would not wear a school uniform any time soon. If Elena hadn't said what she said, I probably would have just sat there, waiting for a miracle.
"Daddy…when is mommy coming back?", she asked shily.
I stood up immediately. "I TOLD YOU I DO NOT WANT HER TO BE MENTIONED IN THIS HOUSE!". I yelled at Elena as I could feel my blood boiling inside me. That whore of her mother, abandoning her own daughter. How could she? I couldn't forgive her. I would not forgive her. Not now, not ever. 
Elena hid her face under the blankets as she started yelling. "I'm sorry, Daddy! I'm sorry! I won't talk about her again!". She was shaking and her voice would crack due to her lack of oxygen. That made me come to my senses once more.
"Elena…". I extended my hand to her, yet she kept shaking. I sat down once more in my chair. We both needed to calm down. I turned on the TV and let the voices of the box fill the room as we both fell silent.
Elena's mother. The person I hated the most in this world, and who I didn't even consider a human anymore. I had taken to referring to her as what she was: a bitch (but with a 'w', gotta watch the language around the kid). Elena's mother became known as "That Witch" in this house. A devilish creature, we were together for 12 years until Elena became sick. Once our daughter got bedridden, she suddenly vanished from our lives. She had abandoned her daughter when she was needed the most. She just went and magically disappeared into thin air when Elena needed her the most. It was inhuman. Only a witch capable of satanic black magic would pull off such a magic trick. Where was she now? Dancing in hell? In the woods, hunting for victims? Who knew, who cared? Not me. For all I cared, she could be slowly burning to death inside a church and the moment she looked at me for help, I would simply walk away.
Suddenly, I noticed a strange whiteness outside. It was snowing? How did I not notice before? It was Winter, of course it was snowing. The streets would soon be painted white, as the houses of the neighborhood would light up in different colors and the stores would become red-and-green paradises of toys, old bearded men and candy. Only a few weeks away from Christmas, huh?
At some point, Elena started looking out the window too. No doubt, she was thinking of how Christmas this year would be a lonely one. No mother, no friends. Not even a pet to hug the few times I would be away. And Christmas night would only amplify these feelings of loneliness and solitude. She was but a small child, all alone in a dark, cold room, looking for the warm embrace of another human being. But not from me. Not anymore.
"Dear Santa! This Christmas, I want the new Dolly Doll House!". I heard the voice of a little girl.
I turned my face to the TV, as it showed a commercial of a toy. It was the usual one; a little girl would open her gift on Christmas, and inside would find a doll the height of a kid. She would then hug her parents and together with the doll, they would enjoy a warm dinner.
"A doll house…" murmured Elena. She was fixated on the TV.
"I thought you were getting old for that?" I teased her and her face got a bit red.
"I'm still a girl, you know! Girls like things like dolls and dresses and pink stuff!". She pouted as she looked the other way and whispered "Men just don't get it". Hey hey, you're sounding like a woman there.
I laughed and pandered the price of the doll. How much are they nowadays? Surely cheaper than a video game console, right? Jesus, how long has it been since I bought a doll? That Witch would usually pick Elena's toys, since she claimed I had no sense for cute stuff. What did she know anyway? All girl toys look the same to me, those skinny blonde plastic dolls.
"Daddy" called Elena. Her face looked melancholic, but she straightened up before looking at me directly in the eyes. A tone of sincerity I had never heard from her came out of her lips. "You know, maybe it won't happen this year, or the next. But I have a dream".
I looked at her and nodded, as if to signal I was listening.
"Well I have lots of dreams, one of them having a normal school life and playing in the snow with some friends. But for now, I want a happy Christmas. I want a Christmas where I'm with both of my parents. Where after dinner I can look at all my new presents, and when the sun comes out, I want to play with my friends. I feel…that would be the perfect Christmas for me. Family and friends…the TV always show kids having that kind of holiday. I want that holiday. I want that normal Christmas everyone has, at least once…"
Elena looked down in thought. We both stayed quiet.
God knew I would do anything for her. But finding her a new mother? Friends? Could I really do that for her? Just how could I? But if the chance appeared in front of me, I would take it without a second thought. I would do anything for Elena.
We sat there and watched the TV for a few hours. It seemed I would not need to come up with a story for the morning.

Noon. Time to make a quick meal for Elena. As I grabbed my favorite knife from the kitchen, the phone rang. Just who calls to a house phone nowadays, I wondered. I picked it up and I heard the voice of a woman on the other line.
"Ah yes, hello?". She sounded agitated. She asked if this was the house of my daughter. How does she know her name? I switched to my serious tone.
"Who is this?" I asked.
"I'm sorry to bother you, this is Alison. I saw in the papers that you needed a caretaker for a child, and well, I'm a trained nurse and I really love kids and maybe I could help with your daughter, I know plenty of stories and games and people always say I have a motherly side to me, oh but don't get me wrong, I'm still young, I'm not even in my thirties yet, ah but don't let that fool you, I'm pretty mature, and I'm a professional and take my job very seriously and I specially have experience taking care of young girls, so I'm also in touch with my childish side and know all kinds of songs and…"
"Hey." I had to cut her off. I felt like if I didn't stop her, she would keep on rambling for the entire day. "First of all," I began, "I don't recall publishing anything in the papers, and I definitely didn't publish anything asking for help with my daughter. Second of all, why would you call a stranger's house and just creepily ask about their daughter out of nowhere?"? Are you insane?". Maybe I was being a little rude with her, but she got on my nerves when she said my daughter's name out of the blue like that".
"Well…the name on the paper was ******. A girl's name, so maybe it was your wife's?" she asked shyly.
Ah. That Witch again. Surely, she did this before she left. Was she planning on throwing all her responsibility into another woman before just abandoning it? Well I'll be dammed, That Witch actually thought of something before vanishing. Woman can't even finish her plans though.
I calmed myself down and tried to explain the situation. "Listen uh, Miss Alison."
��Ah, just Alison is fine!" she replied cheerfully. God, she was really acting like a kid.
"Listen, Alison. It has been months since we published that. I've handled the situation myself and…"
Alison suddenly interrupted me. "Sir, excuse me!". I let her talk. "I know it's been months; I checked the date and all and sure I thought the job was probably taken already, but I just had to try my luck at it!  I really really REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY need the money and I think your little girl could always use a friend! I could be her older sister ah but not that I mean I want to be your daughter, I don't even know you Sir, I mean I can take care of her with my nursery skills while being a good, mature friend to her. That's what I think, Sir!". She ended her long speech with the tone of a soldier. Did I scare her too much at the beginning?
An older sister, huh?
I remembered what my daughter had told me this morning.
How she wanted a warm family.
How she wanted friends.
How she wanted a doll.
Yet I could not afford such things for her. No woman would suddenly want to become the mother of a child who wasn't their own. No kid would want to stay inside with Elena for hours and hours, always inside the same room. And the doll. Oh, the precious dolls. So expensive, I could not afford to acquire but one of them.
I sighed and got back to the call. "I'm sorry, Alison. Unfortunately, I don't think we need your services for now. But listen, give me your phone number and I'll recommend you to my friends, ok?". I had no friends, but she didn't know that. I just wanted the woman to feel a little better for wasting her time with me. Her voice sounded sad, but she thanked me and gave me her number, which I wrote down on a tissue, as a reminder to block it on my cellphone.
Just forget about it.
Forget about her.
Forget about Alison.

Of course, I didn't forget about it. 
It was night once again. It was time for my nightly routine of confronting my own thoughts in the dark as I stared at the ceiling.
An older sister. A mother. A woman. Maybe Elena did need a feminine presence in her life. Maybe she was right to feel like she deserved a normal life, but I was no God. I could not magically fix her body. What could I do?
I had no job. I had no skills. I had no money. I had no looks. I had nothing. There was nothing I could do. I was but a bug on this Earth, and I knew it. The only thing keeping me attached to this world was Elena. My dear Elena. Everything I do is for her. For her and only her.
I turned the TV on, hoping the white noise of the channels would help me sleep. As I rolled around in the sheets, I heard a voice calling me from the TV. I sat straight and noticed a shadowy figure standing behind the screen. It called my name again. The was a static noise coming from the TV, and the voice sounded like a mix of five different adults. I could not identify its gender nor I could make out of its face features.
"Hello?" I asked, hoping for a response. And sure enough, it came.
"Why hello there" it responded with its distorted voice. The face had no eyes or nose, yet I could distinguish a big, white smile. "I don't think I have properly introduced myself yet. I am The Dollmaker."
At that moment, I thought of it but nothing more than a dream. My mind trying to scare me with spooky images that could not be true in real life.
Yet it was no dream, as I would soon realize. It was real. It was a real apparition that spoke to me. And it was the reason I started building it for Elena.
It was the reason I started building Elena her own doll house.

I used her to paint the house

And so she joined the Doll House.

After we decorated my home and our three big gigantic trees i was very exhausted,
But soon as i closed my eyes i felt a puddle of water on my face and shirt ."Come on lets go we have to buy toys so we can take them to the kids"
 Noah said, after we finished getting the toys it was time to checkout and bag everything up. i spotted Gunter and some girl at the store so i tried to avoid him as much as i could. until i felt someone grab my arm and i punched them hard in the face 
"ouchh" Noah said oh my goshhhh i'm so sorry, i kissed his cheek to ask for forgiveness. 
"Dam girl you can aim" Noah said. I chuckled. after we loaded up the truck we headed to the special hospital that help kids and we passed out all of the presents, Noah and i read christmas stories to them, Kristi got Eric to dress up as santa , we all drank hot chocolate and watch every little kid tell us a great story about their lives , Noah also had an idea to give the parents christmas cards since they have to spend days,months and weeks at a hospital .and Kristi and Eric donated to help the kids get proper treatment. "Hi can i take a picture with you guys" said Amy SURE why not Noah and i both said . "Do you guys have any kids together yet" Amy asked. umnnn we're nnnnot together i said to Amy , "well you guys should be, he looks at you like he loves you and you does the same" a little boy name Dean said softly. Noah and i smiled. Heyyyy you guys are young what you know about love, we hugged everyone and left, I think this was the best part of christmas so far just seeing these little kids faces and letting them open their gifts and take pictures everything was so perfect ,Thankyou Blanca for putting this day together for me, for us it really means a lot. Noah said he leaned in and hugged me. Well actually tonight is not over you want to get take out go to your home and watch christmas movies Noah asked , No i want to get take out go to your home and watch christmas movies we both smiled at each other.
