He also could complain about how mundane fire had become and some of his quotes included "It's normal for animals to eat raw meat so I don't see how Pestials are much different." The guy was weird.

The Fifth was a Sunday. Religion didn't exactly function here in the same way it did back home due to one worldbuilding absurdity. The Divine Right of Kings, where the King was directly chosen by a god to lead the people, was very real and very potent. Vladimir von Erztein was, quite literally, the vessel of Artemis, the Ancient Greek Goddess of the Deep Woods. As King, he was responsible for the power bestowed upon him and God's Old Followers, in this case a druidic order where people like Gareth had come from. Shrines to other gods were allowed under "Jure Vampyr e Daemon", the Demon/Vampire book of Law, provided that they did not exceed the size of the local well and that idols were not comparable to the King's Throne.

Naturally, as part of my duty to the King, I had to sit through about four hours of more Gareth and the old stories of the Druids of Artemis, who were all variations of Gareth and the faith generally peddled an idealized coexistence with nature, with Hell being a variation on that same woodland turning on you the instant you stray from the Goat's Path.

As a non-theist, consider myself not exactly convinced by it. Still, I had to bear with it for those long hours.

Personally, I chose to go with getting her feet under the covers first, pushing the bottom corner of the covers past her human feet and then getting as much room away from her tail and stomach to get as much leverage as I could to pull the covers under her wings and head.

This way, I'd not have to really deal with being close to her face. I did have to manually make sure some of her feathers didn't get caught, but I managed to get her under the covers.

Getting under the covers myself, I managed to get some sleep.

Chapter 24
 The next day Adam jumped on top of me while I was reading, exclaiming, "Avery, let's go swimming!!"
 I looked up at Adam from my very uncomfortable position underneath him, "Adam, it is November."
 Adam grinned, "We have an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. Come on, go swimming with me."
 I shook my head, "I don't have a swimsuit with me and get off me, your heavy."
 Adam pouted, "I have a girl's swimsuit in my closet. Pwease, Avery? Pretty please? I'll get off you if you say yes."
 I grunted, "Fine, I'll swim with you, just get off me already."
 Adam smiled, getting off me, "Great, come on, let's go to my room, oh, and the swimsuit has never been worn before."
 I sighed, as Adam dragging me to his room, he threw open the door and ran to the closet, he opened a drawer, pulling out a bikini, "Uhhh, Adam? I'm not wearing that."
 Adam looked at it, "Why? You have a nice body, you could wear this."
 I shook my head, "No, that thing barely covers anything."
 Adam looked down, "It covers your girly bits, right? So it covers enough. Just try it on."
 I sighed, "Fine, I'll try it on."
 10 minutes later I was standing next to the pool, sighing, Adam had talked me into wearing the bikini, ugh. So much of my skin was exposed, I bit my lip, why did I let Adam talk me into this? Wait, who is going to swim with us? Please tell me no one is joining us.
 Oh no, Mary came in the pool, crap, she was going to see me half-naked...Wait, she is a woman, it shouldn't matter, right? Okay, maybe no one else will come.
 The door opened again, Alice and Alec walked in, ugh, noooo, there is a male, well, a straight one anyway.
 Alec looked over at me, "Nice bikini, Avery!"
 I blushed, "Uhh, thanks?"
 Mary looked at me, "Avery, do you remember what I said at the party last night? Own it, and don't be shy, your a pretty young lady."
 I blushed even more, "O-okay, I'll try, I'm going to go swim."
 Alec said, "I'll race you if you want."
 I looked at him, "Swimming race? Sure. One entire lap? Adam, can you count us down?"
 Adam shrugged, "Sure, ready, get set, race!"
 We dived into the water, cutting through it smoothly and quickly as we could, we both slapped the wall at the same time.
 Alec grunted, "We tied, damn, you're a fast 14-year-old."
 I cleared my throat, "Thanks, but I'm still 13, my birthday is on December 22."
 Alec raised his eyebrows, "Really? Wow, I just tied with a 13-year-old girl."
 I looked at him, "You added girl, why? What is so bad about losing to a girl?"
 Alec shrugged, "Because a girl is weaker than a boy."
 I glared, "Girls are equally as strong as boys, I just tied with you and can boy push out something the size of a watermelon out of themselves? Can they bleed for 7 days straight? I don't think so."
 Alec put his hands up as if being held at gunpoint, which he technically was, an annoyed woman was angrily glaring at him, "Okay, okay, calm down, your right, your right, women are just as strong as men are."
 I sighed, "Good, and don't forget it, ever."
 Alec nodded, "I won't, women are scary when they are mad."
 Alice laughed, "Yep, we are scary when we are mad, so don't get us mad. Ever."
 Alec nodded, "Yes, ma' ma, of courses ma' ma."
 Swiming with Alec, Adam, and Alice was fun, we all took showers and when we had lunch we devoured everything, I mean what do you expect? Swimming is very tiring,  especially when you are swimming against someone with longer limbs than you.
 That night I picked up a book and read the entire thing before even feeling the slightest bit sleepy, huh, that's weird, I'm usually so tired after swimming I just pass out before my head hits the pillow.
 I laid down, closing my eyes I tried to sleep, after a couple of minutes, I fell drifted off.
 And thus, ended my fun day.

Niles grinned awkwardly. What was he supposed to tell Wesley? That he had drugged them both, and was now trying to make amends? He didn't think so. He would rather take the secret to his grave than get beaten to a pulp by his mad brother.    

Lucky for him, Blair called out for them at that moment. "Wesley, Niles! What are you two talking about over there?"    

Wesley cast Niles a warning look and then said, pointing at the limestone cave nearby, "I'll throw you into that cave if you try to steal her away from me!"

Niles gaped at his words. 'How cruel. I'm pretty sure that there must have been a swap at the hospital, ' he thought.    

Wesley picked up the shoe covers and walked towards Blair. Niles called after him, "Wesley, we're brothers. Why are you always being so hard on me?"    

"You need the push to grow up,"  Wesley replied.    

'To grow up? The kind of push you're giving me will make me grow into the Hulk, ' Niles thought sulkily.    

Blair asked Wesley, "What's going on? Are you bullying Niles again?"

"No, I'm not,"  he lied.    

Blair knew he was, but she let it go. "Give me the shoe covers. I can put them on by myself."    

"Let me. Niles, get your ass over here,"  Wesley said to his brother, who was sulking over the unfair treatment he was receiving, wondering what he had done to deserve being treated this way by his own brother.   

 "Why are you talking to me? Be hard, just the way you like,"     

Niles blurted out without thinking. Blair choked on her own saliva when she heard that.

'Wesley is hard for Niles?' she thought as she coughed and patted her chest.    

Wesley looked at her with an embarrassed, gloomy face. "What are you thinking, woman? He meant I was being too hard on him."    

"Oh..." Blair said.    

Niles had no idea that Blair had misunderstood his casual words. He waded over, drooping, and asked curtly, "What?"    

Wesley ignored him and told Blair, "Grab onto him and steady yourself while I put on the shoe covers for you."

"I can do it by myself,"  she said again.    

Wesley glared at her and she said nothing more. As Blair clutched Niles' arm, Wesley stooped down to put the shoe covers for her.    

Then, Niles began telling on his brother. "Blair, he said that he was going to throw me into that cave. Are you going to let him?"    

Blair blushed. "My words don't work on him. I've asked him many times to lay off you, but he never listens. Maybe you should ask someone else for help. Other women's words may matter to him." Wesley's hands stopped when he heard that.

"Whom else would my brother listen to? There can't be another woman who matters to him,"  Niles said.    

"Oh yes, there is. Patty, for instance,"  Blair whispered.    

She actually didn't want to bring Patty up. It would spoil all the fun. But she really had told Wesley many times to cut Niles some slacks, but it always fell on deaf ears. Without giving Wesley a chance to speak, she continued, "Last time, at the party, when Megan insulted me, he didn't even care.    

What do you expect me to do with such a man? I mean it. Maybe those two women can help you more than I can."

Anger was building inside Wesley's chest, but he remained quiet.    

Niles thought about what she said. "Sounds like my brother has a lot of women in his life,"  he mumbled.    

"Not really,"  Blair replied sarcastically. "Only those two. Wait a minute. Including Stella and me, there are four women. Oh no, don't forget Garnet. So, five altogether. That's not too many for a senior colonel like your brother."    

After putting the shoe covers on for her, Wesley grabbed her hand and said to Niles, "Blair and I need to have a talk. You go back to your friends."

He took her camera off her neck and thrust it at Niles. Without a warning, he threw her onto his back.    

"What are you doing? Niles, help me! Your brother is going to kill me!"    

Waving to her, Niles simply responded, "Sorry, I can't help you. May God have mercy on you."    

"Wha—? You ungrateful little—!" Blair yelled. She gritted her teeth and decided to join Wesley while he bullied Niles next time.    

When they reached the bank, Wesley returned the shoe covers and ran back to her. "We need to talk,"  he remarked.

"I... I just want to have some fun,"  she said in a low voice, her head hung down and her cheeks crimson.    

"I'll come with you."    

Blair looked up at him. "You have time to hang out with me?"    

The look in his eyes changed a little. "Just a short while,"  he said with a small smile. Blair didn't say where she wanted to go; she decided to let him choose.    

Following closely behind him, she asked, "Where are we going?"    

"Get some rest in the hotel first."

"But I'm not tired. We just started the tour." It hadn't been two hours since she had left her room.    

Wesley took her to the parking lot. "I don't have much time. I should go back by noon."    

"Oh." She was disappointed, but she also knew how significant his job was. She was content with just meeting him, no matter how short it turned out to be. "Duty comes first. I just need some fresh air."    

"Okay."

As they drove, Blair found that the road was familiar to her. It looked like they were heading for the hotel she was staying in.    

And she was right.    

When Wesley killed the engine, she fidgeted in her seat. "You…Why did you bring me back here?" She thought he was taking her to the next scenic spot.    

Wesley got out of the car and opened the door for her.   

 "I'd like to take a look at the room you are staying in." Then he added, "Whom are you staying with?"

The serious look on his face fooled her. She believed he really didn't know.    

"I have the room to myself. The hotel is not so good, but they said this was one of the best in this place."    

Blair took him to her room and opened the door. "The room is pretty big. It's spacious enough since I'm staying alone. Niles made the arrangements."    

The trace of fragrance in the air drew him in. Her scent.    

Wesley pretended to be checking the place out. He looked around the room first, and then examined the bathroom. He even looked out the window. "I know a better hotel. I can take you there."    

"No, thanks. I should stay with the others."    

Blair put her bag on the table, grabbed a bottle of water and handed it to him. "Are you thirsty?"    

Wesley shook his head. She unscrewed the lid and drank some. "This afternoon— Mmph..."

Her mouth was sealed by a hot kiss as soon as she turned around.    

Under his heated passion, Blair realized that the promise about hanging out with her, getting some rest in the hotel and checking out the room were all just ruses. Ruses that he used to get laid.    

He sure had her fooled.

"Drive this woman out!"

"Throw this woman into the sea!"


When he doesn't know Debbie Nian's true identify, Carlos Huo cold-shoulders her. 

"Mr Huo, she is your wife." Carlos secretary reminded him. Hearing that, Carlos gives him a cold stare and complained, "why didn't you tell me earlier?"

Chapter 19: Affton 
It wasn’t that I was afraid of sex or even disinterested in it. The truth of the matter was that I was just as curious and confused about all the intimate workings between a boy and a girl as any girl my age. Well, any girl my age who hadn’t already jumped off that bridge one or two times. I was the last one standing, and the older I got, the lonelier my place on that bridge became.
There were too many other things that occupied my time and my attention when I was in school for hooking up to be on the agenda. I wasn’t the kind of girl who could get naked and romp around with someone casually. I was too intense for that. I was too careful with my time and my affection to hand it out to whoever offered me a good time. That’s why Hayes had been the one and only person I’d even considered sleeping with.
He was adorable in a big, burly kind of way. He was really handsome with his dark hair and light green eyes. I appreciated the fact that he was soft-spoken and thoughtful. I liked that he had a kind heart and an honorable streak a mile wide. His dad was the sheriff, and he took the responsibility of being the sheriff’s son very seriously. He was also stubborn and determined. He asked me out no less than five times before I finally relented and agreed to go on a date with him. I was attracted to everything about him except that he was a hometown boy through and through. I told him upfront that I was leaving, and once I was gone, I would only be back to see my dad. Hayes just smiled and told me there was no harm in spending time together before I left. I believed him when he said he had no intention of holding me back, and eventually, I trusted him enough to entertain the idea of having sex with him. No one wanted to go away to college untried and naïve. No one wanted to be the girl who didn’t know anything about sex and seduction when she was finally on her own and free to experience all that life had to offer without the watchful eye of a parent hindering her.
Unfortunately, things never got that far with Hayes. As it turned out, he was as much of a sucker for a lost cause as I was, and when a new girl showed up at school sporting all kinds of punk rock pointy edges, it hadn’t taken long for his attention and his affection to shift from me to her. I barely felt a single sting when he was gone, so I breathed a sigh of relief that I hadn’t slept with him. In zero time, I was back to being engrossed in school, college prep, spending time with Jordan, and taking care of my dad. In hindsight, there was also a lot of wondering and worrying about Cable taking place in those hours. He always took up space and distracted me, even when he was locked away.
With Cable, I felt more than a sting when he pulled away and when he pushed me to the point of no return. He made me burn. I felt the familiar fiery heat of anger, but there was also a smoldering warmth of something else that lingered beneath the surface. I’d never been so acutely aware of another person before. I swore I had every line of his long, lean body memorized, and I could tell his mood by nothing more than the shift in his eye color. Being around him also made me hyperaware of my own body and the way it responded to his nearness. I was constantly trying to cover up the way my nipples tightened around him. I was continually baffled by the heavy throb between my legs and the way my blood rushed to all the most sensitive parts of my body when he looked at me with those dark eyes, made even darker with desire. I was attracted to him despite knowing what a mess he was, despite the inevitable train wreck that any kind of involvement with him would end in. I was into him when he made it nearly impossible for me to even like him, and I was worried about him when he made it abundantly clear he didn’t want me to be.
He was confusing.
How he made me feel was perplexing.
How I reacted to him was terrifying.
I’d never felt so out of control, and I despised every second of it. All I wanted to do was hide in the fancy guest room with covers over my head and my sanity intact, but I wasn’t given any kind of respite after a sleepless night. That night I spent wondering just how Cable’s, ‘I don’t sleep with virgins’ rule came about, because as soon as the sun came up, he was knocking on the door, sweeping into my room unannounced. He plopped down on the edge of my bed ignoring my groan, his weight making it impossible to pull the covers up to my chin.
He had a bowl of cereal in his hands and a smirk on his face as he watched me struggle to make sense of why he was in my space so early, hell, why he was even in my space at all, when he had done his best to send me running last night.
“You want to come out on the water with me this morning?” He shoved the spoon in his mouth and lifted his eyebrows at me. “You never know when I’m going to get called in for a piss test, so there’s no time to waste.”
I groaned again and rubbed my tired eyes. “What are you talking about?”
“Surfing. You want to come with me this morning?” He sounded so reasonable and  normal. I didn’t trust him for a second.
“Why do you want to take me surfing? You’ve been gone every day for weeks and all of a sudden you’re craving company? I asked you once already to show me how to surf, and you ignored me.” I sounded surly and short. All he did was grin even bigger at my irritated tone.
“You’re gonna help me get my GED. I figured I could help you learn to do something. Maybe teach you how to do something fun since you seem to be allergic to it.”
 I wanted to yank the spoon out of his hand and smack him in the forehead with it. “I’m not allergic to fun. There just hasn’t been a lot of opportunity for it this summer.”
“I’ll give you that. I wouldn’t want to be stuck being responsible for me either, but what about before this summer, Reed? We went to high school together, remember? I know you were never around any of the parties. You never showed up for any of the school events. You barely interacted with anyone. When did you have fun?” He sounded genuinely curious, but every time I gave him the tiniest bit of myself, he ended up taking so much more.
“Not all of us have parents who own an entire town, Cable. Some of us don’t even have parents…just a single, hard-working dad who does his very best to put food on the table and keep the lights on. There isn’t a lot of time for fun when you have to pay your own way in life.” I was sure that if I took a single step out of line if I veered even slightly off the path I’d set for myself, everything would end up crumbling down around me. I didn’t have the time to fail. I didn’t have the confidence to get back up if I fell…so, I never wavered, and I never wandered. At least I hadn’t until this boy and all his tragic, tormented ways sent me spinning.
He gave a little grunt and pushed off the bed. His gaze took me in from my messy hair to where the covers caught around my waist. His eyes shifted to the dark brown that was almost black as he gave a little shrug. “Fair enough. I’ve never had to struggle to find time for fun. The invitation is open if you want to join me. I’m headed out in ten minutes.”
