“Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” Michelle asked. I really must have looked bad for Michelle to be this concerned. “I can drive you home and my dad can follow us....” Michelle rambled on, but I could hardly hear what she was saying. The buzzing in my ears was now a roar, like a freight train running back and forth through my head from ear to ear.

“I have to go, Michelle,” I said, pulling away from the curb, barely giving her time to close the door as I sped off. But I didn’t make it home. I made it as far as Granby Lake when the shaking was so uncontrollable that I had to pull over.

I threw the car into park and the keys under the mat in the driver’s seat. My body was shaking and quivering as pain coursed throughout my body. I screamed, almost a howl, as I ran for the woods. I didn’t know why, but I had the sudden urge to run, to let the coolness of the evening air soothe my skin... to be free.

My body shook uncontrollably as I ran faster than I had ever run before into the forest. The quivering ran from my hands and traveled throughout my body as I ran even faster, pushing harder, losing control of my body. What was happening to me? I screamed as I looked down to see my hands shimmering, changing into giant silver paws, but my screams ended in a howl as the quivering traveled down the length of my body, morphing and changing every cell. By instinct, I leapt into the air and my clothes shredded into pieces. I landed on four paws, running even faster. To where? I didn’t know. Was I going crazy? I looked around and nothing looked familiar. Where was I?

“This can’t be happening to me!” I thought, sprinting through the forest into the Colorado Rockies, as variations of pine and aspen rushed pasted. If I were in my human form, I would have been crying. As it was, dampness seeped from my eyes, soaking the fur underneath. I was almost to Wyoming when I heard voices inside my mind. I am going crazy! I thought to myself, as my powerful claws dug into the lichen along the forest floor, propelling my body even faster. To where? I didn't know.

Werewolves (also called Lycanthropes, Loup Garou, Rougarou, Beasts, or even just Wolves for short) are a supernatural shapeshifting species of individuals who unwillingly transform into large, fearsome, and extremely hostile wolves on the night of the full moon. They were created by the witch Inadu as revenge against her tribe for killing her. Even in their human form, werewolves possess superhuman physical prowess, though not to the same level as a vampire, and their abilities are not as powerful compared to those they possess on the full moon while transformed. These creatures are the most dangerous enemies of vampires due to their venomous bite, which is lethal to them. Werewolves are also hardwired to kill vampires on sight in their wolf form, though they still hunt human prey whenever there are no vampires to kill.

Lycanthropy is an inherited genetic condition due to a curse, and a person can only be a werewolf if they are born to at least one werewolf parent; they cannot be turned by a bite or scratch. Furthermore, the werewolf gene must be "triggered" by taking the life of a human, either intentionally or by accident, in order to gain access to their enhanced physical abilities, though this comes at the cost of transforming into a wolf during every full moon. It does not matter if the kill was accidental or intentional, premeditated or out of self-defense — if a werewolf causes the death of a human in any way, their werewolf gene will be activated. Untriggered werewolves, however, can kill vampires without activating their curse.

In Voodoo in My Blood, the origins of the Werewolf Curse and Werewolves were revealed. A powerful witch, that was known as "the Hollow", cursed the members of her tribe that were responsible for her murder and created the Seven Werewolf Bloodlines. The Hollow was hunted by wolves, and was killed on the night of a full moon. These circumstances would cause future werewolves to have to take a human life to activate the werewolf gene, forcing the species to have to painfully shapeshift on the night of a full moon into the very animals that hunted Inadu down.

Werewolf Settlements

According to Klaus, werewolves exist throughout the United States from the East to the West coasts, though they are not always easy to find. Most werewolves gather in packs, where some of them, such as Ray Sutton's pack, remain on the road, only gathering at the full moon so they turn freely in remote mountains or parks. Nevertheless, some werewolf communities will gather in one place and settle there to create long-term homes in towns and cities where they may make up a significant fraction of an area's supernatural population, such as the Crescent Wolf Pack and the Bayou Pack, who have settled in the greater New Orleans region on the southern coast of Louisiana.

Physiology

Food

Like normal humans, werewolves can eat human food if they wish. However, because they turn into ferocious beasts during the full moon, they are carnivores. When in wolf form, they can feed on human or vampire body parts and organs, but they are not required to ingest them in order to prolong their existence, like vampires, must do with blood. There are no known consequences from abstaining from human or vampire flesh while in werewolf form. It seems that most werewolves do not get to feed on humanoid flesh, because most tend to lock themselves up during the full moon, or are scared or distracted away from their victim before they can eat them.

Werewolves have not been seen to attack each other in human or lupine form, but have been known to hunt both human and vampire prey while transformed under the full moon.

Appearance

Werewolves in their wolf form are quite similar to natural wolves, although unlike natural wolves, werewolves have glowing yellow or orange eyes, wicked fangs, and a much more feral and predatory appearance. They can also be distinguished from regular wolves by their displays of supernatural strength, blurred speed, and size which is comparable to fully grown humans. The fur color of wolf forms differs from one to the other (e.g., Tyler Lockwood's fur color is dark brown, Mason Lockwood's is white and grey, Jules' is light brown with a hint of white, and Hayley's is tan and brown). Werewolves appear the same as any other human the rest of the month, aside from their enhanced abilities of speed, strength, and healing.

Werewolf Transformation

A werewolf will only transform into a wolf under a full moon. The first transformation is quite slow, and the person is subjected to at least five or six hours of intense, bone-breaking pain before the actual transformation. After the first transformation, the experience does not last nearly as long, but it is still painful and something many werewolves come to dread. Klaus mentions that embracing the transformation rather than fighting it as most werewolves do, would make the process faster.

Psychological Characteristics

Werewolves are known to be aggressive, strong and fast, even in human form. Tyler Lockwood often had trouble controlling his temper, especially leading up to and during the full moon. Those with the werewolf curse still latent can exhibit some supernatural traits which can be triggered by aggression, along with unusual physical strength for the person's given size and age, but they cannot fully transform, and they also have a tendency to black out when they become overwhelmed in fits of rage. Werewolves seem to have a strong sense of duty and loyalty to protect their own and feel a responsibility to help their fellow werewolves whenever they can

Code of Loyalty

Werewolves are very similar to witches when it comes to their own kind. Unlike vampires, werewolves have an unwavering sense of loyalty, and will often bond with other werewolves they meet. They form packs and work with each other as sort of an extended family. The bond of loyalty between werewolves is so strong that while changed under full moons, the only beings they do not attack are other werewolves (regardless of whether or not they have activated their werewolf gene). This code does seem to extend to Klaus' hybrids, as well. It's possible that another reason why Klaus' hybrids were so loyal, aside for the Sire Bond between them, was because of their werewolf heritage.

Powers and Abilities

Super Strength: Werewolves possess supernatural strength that makes them far stronger than immortals, Supernatural Hunters, and humans, such as when Tyler pulled the door off his locker, or when Diego ripped apart a bully. 

Super Speed: Werewolves are much faster than humans and some other supernatural beings. They possess this ability both in and out of transformation, with an animalistic quickness. For example, while in human form, Rafael Waithe scaled up and down the side of a building in under twenty-seconds.

Super Agility: Werewolves possess superhuman agility. In both human and wolf form, they have demonstrated that they can move, jump very high, climb, flip, and run incredibly fast without difficulty or exhaustion. They can also jump down from incredible heights with almost gravity-defying grace.

Super Durability: Werewolves can take far more trauma than humans without nearly as much discomfort or injury, however, not as much as vampires. They can also exert themselves for longer periods without tiring.

Healing Factor: Werewolves possess superhuman regenerative abilities, meaning that if they are physically injured, their bodies will heal rapidly. Like vampires, werewolves can heal from the most grievous of injuries, even in human form, albeit more slowly in comparison to vampires. However, unlike vampires, when a werewolf's neck is broken, they stay dead.

Super Senses: Werewolves have extremely keen and heightened senses of smell, sight, taste, hearing, and touch that exceed their wolf counterparts and that of regular canines. With this, experienced werewolves such as Jules could sniff out vampires - something vampires themselves are incapable of - and Tyler could taste vervain placed in his coffee, which would otherwise be impossible since coffee's intense flavor typically masks the taste of the herb. 

Lycanthrope Enhancement: Werewolves are able to make their eyes glow when angry or threatened, but only for a short amount of time. When a werewolf is furious or forced to defend themselves, their anger increases all their power and abilities for a short period of time, which allows them to access some of the power of their wolf form to give them an edge.

Shapeshifting/Transformation Control: During a full moon, they will unwillingly transform from their human form and into their wolf form. However, if a female werewolf is pregnant, they will not turn for nine months as the transformation would kill the baby.

Werewolf Bite: A werewolf's venom is extremely lethal to non-original vampires. While an Original vampire cannot die from the venom, they are not wholly immune to the effects of the bite. For non-Original vampires, the venom acts as an poison of sorts that will enter the bloodstream and deliver the toxin throughout the body, producing discomfort and weakness, developing uncontrollable hunger that progresses to delusions, hallucinations, rabid rage, and dementia, culminating in death. Original vampires undergo the same effects, but do not die and will eventually fully recover.

Full Moon: A werewolf's strength, speed, agility, and all their powers are enhanced to their peak during a full moon.

Immunity to Silver: Werewolves are immune to magic bonded to silver. Weapons made of silver might wound them, but the wound still heals at supernatural rates and will not be fatal to them.

Weaknesses

Wolfsbane: When ingested, wolfsbane causes a werewolf to become severely weak and feverish. Also, If a werewolf's skin is exposed to wolfsbane, it will burn them.

Mortality: In most situations, minor physical injuries such as gunshots, stab wounds, and broken bones will cause a werewolf pain and slow them down until they heal. However, they still share many of the same weaknesses as non-supernatural beings and can perish from extreme trauma (e.g. suffocation, extreme blood Loss, a broken neck, decapitation, fire, heart extraction, etc.). They can also die from old age.

Magic: Werewolves are susceptible to the powers of witchcraft. This is inclusive of mystical objects such as the Starling Necklace, Gilbert Device, and dark objects. Multiple spells have been performed by witches against werewolves to cause several effects against them, such as slowing down or speeding up a werewolf's transformation during a full moon, telekinetically ripping a heart from a werewolf's chest, or cursing a pack of werewolves to be trapped in their wolf form at all times except for a few short hours during the full moon when they return to their human forms.

Former Weaknesses

Doppelgänger Blood Magic: If blood from the last pair of doppelgängers is used in the Magic Purification Spell, all activated werewolves revert back to being a mortal with an untriggered wolf gene like Tyler. Kai absorbed the magic purification spell and as such, it no longer exists.

Trivia

There are seven original Wolf Packs, with each bloodline having their own unique strain of werewolf venom.

The Northeast Atlantic Pack and the Crescent Wolf Clan are said to have been fighting against each other since the beginning of the werewolf species.
Werewolves procreate sexually, and the werewolf gene or curse is carried down through their bloodlines.

Werewolves are the antithesis to vampires, as vampires are typically solitary creatures due to their immortality, while werewolves group in packs.
Hayley is the first pregnant werewolf in the series.
This also makes her the first werewolf to not transform during a full moon without being a hybrid, an evolved werewolf, or while wearing a moonlight ring.

Every werewolf to appear on The Vampire Diaries has been killed.

In the books, the Original Pack, Tyler Smallwood, Caroline Forbes, Caroline's unborn twin children and Jacob Smallwood were the only werewolves.
A werewolf could also be a witch if one of their parents were a witch, such as Klaus when he was alive. However, Klaus was untapped prior to triggering his curse. In the television series, it remains unknown if triggering the werewolf curse would allow witches to continue to practice witchcraft.

It is established through Ansel in Chasing the Devil's Tail that at least some werewolves can sense and be drawn to the newly born members of their bloodlines in their wolf form; this is how Ansel knew Hope is alive.

The Originals writer Carina MacKenzie confirmed that temporarily killing a vampire, such as breaking their, would not trigger the werewolf curse.[2]

As Mother was setting up the candles, I watched as the other witches prepared me and a few others for the ritual. One of the younger witches who was being prepared next to me noticed my pointed ears and said, "You aren't a full witch are you?" I just grinned, revealing my sharp wolf teeth. The young witch backed away from me in pure fear so I just looked back over at Mother who looked back at me with a beautiful smile.
"Who wants to know?" I say, looking back at the girl with my neon yellow eyes.
The young witch says, "The daughter of Althea, my name is Alita Asteria Althea."
I grin and nod my head once in acknowledgment, "My name is Rudina Rieka Bellatrix." I answer.
Alita gasps, "Your of THE Bellatrix witch family?" she says and I nod. "That's cool but you aren't a purebred witch so who's your father?" Alita asks. I don't answer but I can smell my father in the woods nearby. Tonight is a full moon, mother knows what will happen when the full moon rises. I look up at the moon and grin, bathing in the moonlight. My eyes turn into the eyes of a wolf but a brighter neon yellow. I look over at Alita and she gasps, "Your eyes! They're like a wolf's!" she says in awe.
I smile, "Yes, they are, that's what happens when I look up at the moon." I say.
Alita looks at me a moment longer before saying anything, "Your the daughter of a wolf. Which makes you the very first wolfwitch ever in Faelandia! That's so cool!"
Suddenly the moon hits its peak and I begin shifting into my wolf form. I slowly grow fur and my bones rearrange and change into the bones of a wolf, I sprout a tail and my ears change into the ears of a wolf. As soon as my transformation is complete, I howl at the moon. Just then all the other witches start the ritual, my mother sets a bowl in front of me which I know isn't part of the ritual but is ritual for Mother and me on a full moon. I drink the potion that's in the bowl and shift back to human, the only difference this time is that I have my wolf ears, my tail, and my wolf eyes. The witches circle us and start chanting in a tongue so old that it has been forgotten by all except the witches. As the witches chant, I feel a strange new power awaken in me as the powers of a Bellatrix witch are given to me through my mother's blood. As soon as the ritual is over, Father and his pack walk over to stand behind me. I turn around and hug Father. "Father!" I say, smiling as Father nudges my face in greeting.
"Hello my beautiful baby girl," Father growls in Wolf Tongue. Mother walks over and places a hand on my shoulder.
Alita, too, walks over and she says, "He's a beautiful wolf and an Alpha. It's very rare for witches to see an Alpha wolf in these parts, so I'm assuming him and his pack is here to see you Rudina."
I look over my shoulder and at Alita. "Yes, they all came to see me, I could smell them nearby the entire time," I say with a grin before standing up. All the young witches and their mothers stare at me in awe, they watch as my father and his pack howl along with me in the howl of joy. The witches eventually disperse and go their separate ways, Father and his pack then leave after a short goodbye howl. Alita and her mother stayed with me and Mother, in fact, they're Mother's neighbors. The four of us head back to our cabins and go to sleep.

I mean, I'm not saying I hate you, it's not your fault, of course, but the fact is really weird that born-wolves don't show any signs until they are 18 and that's also on the night of the full moon," said Alec checking Breta's notes. "No, it's not fully like that. Look, there is something here," Breta said, pointing at a point in the book, "Born-wolves start showing signs from the moment they turn 18 until the full moon. Let me note this point. It's important."
Born-wolves
1.     Both of their parents are born-wolves. If one parent is born-wolf and another one is werewolf or human, their children wouldn't be born-wolves, they would be human. But if they were bitten, they would turn into werewolves. That's why born-wolves are very rare.
2.     They turn on the full moon night after they turn eighteen. 
3.     They start showing signs only after they are eighteen. 
4.    Full moons don't affect them like they usually do to werewolves except for the night they turn for the first time.  
5.    On the full moon night of their first turning into a wolf, they don't have any control over themselves. So on that night, they are needed to take to the jungle under the bright light of the moon or somewhere from where they won't be able to harm anyone.
6.     Don't walk in a pack, unlike werewolves. They fight or hunt alone. But can create their own teams (not packs) in special cases which only can contain people or wolves he really cares about like his friends or family. 
7.    Though they are not werewolves themselves, can create another werewolf by biting. 
8.     Are stronger than werewolves, even the Alpha of a pack. 
9.     Can create their 'Kiaras'. But one can have only one 'Kiara' in one's lifetime. Creating 'Kiara' takes an ultimate bond between the born-wolf and the other person who can be a human or born-wolf or werewolf or literally any creature. The bond can be created based on love or friendship or loyalty. The Kiara and the born-wolf share a similar mark on their body; the mark is received on the same night the born-wolf is turned for the first time. Both of them will feel a sharp pain when the mark will be imprinting on them and it's a permanent mark until one of them dies. The mark varies depending on the bond. 
10.  Their howls are louder and deeper than the howls of the werewolves. 
"You know what, I think it's cool," said Alec, "Just look at the facts. They are amazing. You can be a wolf whenever you want to. By the way, then you will have to carry an extra piece of outfit always." 
"He will have to only if he takes a wolf shape only," said Breta. 
"What do you mean?" asked Dave. 
"There is something else written down here. Look. It says that a born-wolf can decide not to take a full wolf shape if he wants to. He can fight or hunt by still remaining in his own human shape just by bringing his claws and fangs. The same thing goes for werewolves," said Breta, "I didn't notice it at first. The writer decided to write it at the end of the page, what an odd choice!" 
"This is a bit relaxing. At least I don't have to carry an extra piece of clothing all the time if I'm actually a born-wolf," said Dave, "By the way, does it say anything about pain? I mean, on the night of the full moon when a born-wolf is turned for the first time, does it hurt?" 
"Isn't it obvious, you dumbass? Your wolf self is definitely going to crack your bones. Of course, it's going to hurt or why would they lose control over themselves," replied Alec. 
"He has a point, though nothing is written in here about the whole transforming thing," said Breta, "I think we should look into another book for more details." 
"No," said Alec and Dave together. "Oh, Miss Breta, I think that's enough for my little old brain. You already gave more than enough information to our brains," said Alec dramatically. "Yeah, let's put that work for another day," agreed Dave. Breta just rolled her eyes. She was definitely going to the library the next day, even if they weren't coming with her. "Whatever. However, it's already 10 pm. Do you guys want to eat or not?" she asked the boys. "Definitely. I forgot to mention how hungry I am right now," said Alec getting out of the bed quickly. "Yeah, I'm hungry too. Let's go then," said Dave. 
"What? Aren't you coming?" Dave asked Breta who was showing no interest in going with them to grab dinner. "Nope," replied Breta still looking at the information she wrote down. "You are the one mentioning being hungry," Alec said. "No, I just asked you two if you wanted to eat. I didn't say I'm hungry," Breta pointed out, "Besides, I have some chocolate chip cookies in my bag. I think that's enough for tonight." "Of course, Miss Smarty Nerd. Enjoy your cookies and books, I'm outta here," said Alec being dramatic again before walking away pulling Dave along.

Being normal, huh, she is never normal. Maybe that's what makes her special, unique, worthy of everything. I wonder if she knows what exactly she is, what her voice can create, and what shadow her appearance brings.

It all started in the beginning, a single black wolf chasing the stars in an everlasting journey to find the woman on the moon. The black wolf was the first of his kind, strong, brave, the king of wolves. His coat was darker than the night and his eyes shined like fire opals. He could hear her soft voice, sweet like honey and soothing as the sea. Her songs would reach out to him, like soft caresses that only a lover would bestow. Her true form was only visible on a full moon just as the moon kissed the calm waters of Lake Lunia. Her white alabaster hair strewn across in heavy waves, soft rose colored lips formed in a smile, a virgins blush glowing on high cheekbones, and love filled yellow eyes that always promise eternity. Her skin was as white as fresh snow, her body looked of marble as the ripples of water disturbed her frame. A reminder to the wolf that his goddess is not on this earth, only a reflection of what was his. Centuries went by as the moons unhappiness began to show, her color fading and her smile gone. Only then did the sun notice her unhappiness as her light shined dim. The sun pitied the two, and blessed them both with the power to meet in humanoid form. But only on the full moon could the two lovers meet, sharing precious moments in the arms of each other. Bodies entwined, souls reaching out as passion ensued, a love so powerful it was felt for centuries. As their love grew so did their family, and their children had the power to change into wolves. Their first child was a male named Alpha, the largest of all the children, a born leader and protector. The second child was named Beta, he was slightly smaller than his brother, equal in strength and courage. The two first children looked like their father, and their wolves as kind. The last child was Omega, small, her body was white as the stone on the moon, her eyes yellow like stars, and her hair black as the night. Out of all the children she looked fragile and small. Her wolf was just as small, but agile, her wolf was black with faint white tips. But her powers were great, unlike her brothers who were much stronger, larger, and faster. She could heal wounds, and feel the emotions of her family. But it went beyond that as she grew older and as she grew older more children came to be from her parents. Soon she would feel the entire pack, the stress, sadness, the anger, and the other emotions that the humanoid side would cling to. Her role in the first pack became the foundation, a current for emotions to flow through, for the wolf couldn't handle the link of  humanoid emotions on a massive scale. The omegas ability to absorb emotion, and to redirect the emotion surpasses that of the Alpha and Alpha Luna of the current packs today. They were the healers, counselors, history keepers, they gave the pack to reason to fight, something for them to protect. Omegas were plentiful up until the Sun became jealous of the wolf, seeing that the moon never looked at him or thanked him enough. So he cursed them again, leaving the black wolf to wonder the plains of the earth, forever crying to the moon. Always proclaiming his love, but the moon cries over her children wishing her lover would see that they suffer. The first three children fell into disarray, Alpha and Beta dying in a glorious battle against the sun, using their celestial power as the first children to attack him in a fruitless endeavor. Omega was said to have disappeared after her father, searching for him and trying to find a way too reach her mother. Hoping she can save what remains of her parents legacy. They say sometimes when the wolf and omega are close you can hear the sorrowful cries near the Lake of Lunia on the full moon. 
Packs have remained around the area close to   Lake of Lunia, hoping one day the goddess will return to her children to save them from the link madness.

Turning 21 was supposed to be the best moment of any wolf shifters life, this was the moment the moon goddess came down from above and blesses you with your wolf. Right?
