Soon another year passed and nothing eventful happened in the vault.
I was now 10 Years Old and today I would be given a Pipboy!
I got up from my table in the Library and started heading to the room where my family lives in the vault.
As soon as I entered our home I found that it was dark, but suddenly the lights were turned on and I was momentarily blinded for a second.
"Surprise!" My Mother, Father, and a few other people said at the same time.
"Jeez, a little warning next time? I fear I may go blind if yall do this again..."  I told everyone.
"Sorry about that." my parents apologized.
"Congratulations on your birthday," an old man told me before walking towards me with a pipboy in hand.
I instantly became shocked upon seeing this old man.
It was Overseer Charles Flair!
I bowed before the overseer but he pats me on my shoulder and told me "No need to bow, I am merely here to see the promising Genius of our vault and congratulate him on becoming 10 years old."
Overseer Charles then handed me a Pip-Boy 3000 Mark IV.

My room was quite bare and empty and contained nothing of any significance.

If I remember correctly Atom's Blessing is a unique trait that most members of the Children of Atom have, currently the Church of the Children of Atom is located in Megaton and has not spread out past the town yet.
When Fallout 4's events begin the Children of Atom have spread to the commonwealth and are quite aggressive, they kill most people on sight with their Gamma Weapons that irradiate people to death.
Although there are some groups of the Church of the Children of Atom that are friendly most children of atom kill on sight.
I scanned through the rest of my Pipboy and found that most things in my inventory were normal and held no importance in my mind.
I opened the Map Tab and found myself looking at a large map of the world.
It was empty and had no markers or locations.
It did however have the vault on the map.
I found that the vault was located near a small town called Morristown to the west of New York.
[A/N: Morristown is a real place in the world and it is located to the west of New York, I spent a few hours looking around New York on Google Earth and all I saw was civilization for countless miles. I am too lazy to see if Morristown existed back before the divergence and I certainly don't care, so It's now in the fallout universe either way! Also, I am too lazy to look through New York block by block so I will just roll with it, some buildings in real-world new york will end up in this novel and some that do exist may not appear in this novel]

What happens when a Nerd awakens after falling asleep and mysteriously dying to find that he has somehow reincarnated into the Fallout Universe and to top it all off reincarnated into Vault 22 as some kind of monster?

Hows your week going, Jessi?

She smiled into her phone.  It was the second time Judd had called since shed seen him Saturday night.  He wasnt obtrusive, just checking in on her, making sure everything was alright.  Like a good Dominant should.

Its good, actually.  How about yours?

He laughed lightly.  Oh, you know, the usual mayhem.  I wanted to touch base with you about Saturday.  This weeks project is going to be putting a planting bed on the east side of the house.

Jessi smiled.  Shed been after Graham for years about how bare that side of the house was.  That sounds great.  Ive been wanting to spruce up that area.

How about you helping me out?  We can take a look at the space and make a few plans before we go to the nursery to pick out plants and things.

She looked down and wiggled her freshly manicured toes.  Id love to help.  That sounds like a plan.

Alright, then.  Ill be by around 10:00.

When Judd pulled up on Saturday morning, Jessi opened the door to greet him, but Buddy pushed past her to eagerly romp across the lawn.  Hey there, killer! Judd laughed, reaching down to muss the puppys ears before striding up to Jessi on the front porch.

Can I get you some coffee before we get started?

Judd beamed at her.  Coffee sounds fantastic.  He followed her to the kitchen, admiring her tanned legs and the way her khaki shorts hugged the curve of her ass.

Would you like some breakfast, eggs or something?  She poured coffee into a blue mug and handed it to him.

No, Im good for now.  He scanned down to her toes in her jeweled sandals and grinned back up at her.  Jessi smiled smugly, knowing that shed completed her task satisfactorily.

Coffee mugs in hand, they wandered outside to the east end of the house.  Its pretty blank, Judd observed.

It is.  I always thought it would be nice to have a sort of free-form planting bed edged by foxtail ferns or something, and then maybe something tall in the center and accented here and there around that with annuals.  Jessi looked to Judd, wondering about his opinion.

He flashed her a brilliant smile.  Sounds perfect.  Lets go get what we need.

Two hours later, Judd leaned against the handle of his shovel and swiped his forearm across his brow.  He glanced at Jessi who knelt nearby, removing a new pink begonia from its black plastic pot so she could place it in the hole shed just dug.  He tried unsuccessfully to avoid looking down the gaping neckline of her purple top.

Im going to hell.

He crossed to the porch and retrieved a bottled water from the small cooler theyd placed there.  How about some water?

Jessi looked up gratefully.  Yes, please!

He took another for himself and wandered back to her.  Jessi stood, dusting off her knees and removing her gardening gloves.  Thanks so much!  She unscrewed the cap and sipped gratefully.

Judd looked around at their handiwork.  Not too bad, right?  Another couple of hours and well be finished.

She smiled.  Now I wish wed taken before and after pictures.

They finished their water break and returned to work.  Judd turned over a shovel-full of soil.  So how did you and Graham meet?

He watched expectantly as Jessi looked up in surprise.  But he knew the answer to the question.

I met my Sparrow when I was a graduate assistant.  I was teaching a freshman journalism class.  When she walked in on the first day, I knew my life was forever changed.

Oh, well, Jessi began, I met Graham at UF.  He was working on his doctorate and he taught one of my classes my first semester there.  She glanced up at Judd to gauge his reaction.  I know, I was only eighteen.  He was fifteen years older.  But he was so handsome and smart and sophisticated.  I fell for him right away.

We dated for a while.  I was only nineteen when we got married.  Obviously, I finished my degree, and then we moved down here.  Hed gotten a job with the newspaper.  We bought this house and I got a job teaching.

And the kids came along?

Jessi smiled.  Yeah.  Cara when I was only twenty-two, and then Adam a couple of years later.  I was kind of young, I suppose.  Now theyre out on their own.  I dont feel old enough to have adult children.

Youre forty-five? he asked.  Jessi looked surprised.  Judd backpedaled a bit.  I did the math.  You said Graham was fifteen years older.

Oh.  She blushed slightly.  How old are you?

I turned forty last month.

Jessi chuckled.  Youre young yet.  You and your wife didnt have children?

Judd shook his head.  Nope.  That was one of the reasons we broke up.  She wanted kids.  I didnt.

Jessi frowned slightly.  Not ever?

Does that make me a bad person?

No, of course not.  Its just, well  How can you be so certain that you wont change your mind?

Judd looked at his feet for a moment.  I got sick when I was a kid.  The mumps.  I cant father a child.  So, if I ever had kids, Id have to adopt or use a donor, and to me, its just not how I want to do it.  Besides, I like my life the way it is.

Jessi blinked as she considered this information.  Do you want to be married again one day?

He sighed and looked out over the lawn.  I dont know.  My divorce hit me pretty hard.  Left me feeling like maybe marriage isnt for me.

Not sure how to respond, Jessi walked to the back of the pick-up truck to retrieve another flat of begonias, pausing to pull her auburn hair back into a ponytail.  She knelt as she began planting them at the far side of the bed.

Judd spoke again.  So how did you and Graham get into the lifestyle?  It was another question to which he knew the answer.

It shocked me to the core.  My Jessi, chatting and flirting with other men online.  In a lot of ways, I felt that it was my fault.  She was so young when we met.  She never really had a real college experience, never dated different guys.

After my heart attack, they had me on all sorts of medication that made it impossible for me to please her physically.  And that made me a grouchy old bastard, let me tell you, Judd.

Jessi is so passionate, so sexual.  And when I pushed her away, she started looking elsewhere for companionship, for validation as a woman.  I was furious, of course.  But I knew that if I wanted to keep her, I needed to up my game.

Jessi coughed slightly and turned to face away from him as she focused on the begonias.  What?

I said, how did you and Graham get into the lifestyle?  He watched as her ears reddened.

We, um, she sighed deeply.  You see, we got really busy working and raising kids, like people do, you know.  And then Grahams heart

She cleared her throat, still facing away from him.  I loved him so much.  And when he began having trouble, you know

Judd watched as her ears turned even redder.  I would never have complained to him about not being able to perform.  I tried to be patient and kind and supportive.

She patted soil around the bottom of a plant, then dug another hole for the next one.  Judd waited quietly.  We went for a couple of years without  She stopped digging for a moment.  I didnt orgasm for two years after his heart attack.  She resumed digging.  When I tried to initiate sex, hed get angry.  I think he just felt worried he might not be able to perform.

Mechanically, she removed the next begonia from its pot and placed it in the hole.  I started chatting with a few men I met online.  Just friendly innocent stuff.  I didnt mean to be unfaithful.  But Graham had become so angry and distant.  And these men were sweet and kind and complimentary.

When he found out, I thought our marriage was over.  He was absolutely furious.  I did everything I could think of to apologize.  I let him rant and rage at me.  Finally, he came to me and gave me three options.  One, wed divorce.  Which was the last thing I wanted.  I loved him so much.  The second option was for us to have an open marriage.  I could see other men, he could see other women.  But I never wanted other men, not really.  I just wanted my man back.  The third option was for me to give him my utter submission, to accept him as my Dominant.  There would be rules and chores, and thered be punishments for infractions.

Jessi finally risked a glance in Judds direction.  Obviously, I opted for number three.  And I never regretted it.  His rule and Dominance were exactly what I needed.  We found our way to a deeper intimacy than wed ever had before.

Judd smiled kindly.  Dominance and submission are like that.  I appreciate your honesty.  I know that wasnt easy, little one.

'What the?' The last thing I want to do is leave this Boss battle. I go to turn off visual notifications, but a blinking orange exclamation point draws my attention. I click it to find out I'm down to 7% Nutrient Solution.

My hour of slaughter must have edged me close to the Zone. Still, I shouldn't be using up solution this quickly. Part of me wonders if Nutri-Peak screwed me and swapped my A-grade stuff for expired D-grade or something.

The only thing worse than logging out before the battle begins is being force-logged out and insta-killed in the middle. I log out.

I open my eyes to soft pink light and the calming floral-mint scent blend they pump into the V-Havens. I'm half-submerged in blue-glowing gel, but it's not wet. I'd compare it to extra-strong jello? My muscles are relaxed and flexible; I set my V-Haven preferences to have the nanocytes in the gel move and massage my muscles intermittently, so I don't get stiff or unhealthy lying still for 12 hours a day.

"Open hatch," I command. With a hiss, the lid of my pod opens upward. I feel like a high-tech Dracula emerging from a cryogenic coffin.

Alopix opens one eye and greets me with a half-asleep "woof." I swing my legs out of the V-Haven and bend down to scratch behind his ears. He insists on scooting his bed to the side of my gaming pod every time I do a full-immersion dive.

It's cute af, but don't tell him I said so.

A muffled thump sounds outside my door, alerting me to a delivery. In the fancier new apartments, you can program the doors to let delivery drones automatically enter and drop off goods inside your home. I chose this building specifically because that was NOT an option here.

I want the eventual robot overlords to have to work for it when they break in and harvest my body to fuel their dread machines. I'm old-fashioned that way.

I pad barefoot across the hardwood floor and pull open my door. I have a split second to think it feels heavier than usual before Robbie crashes in with it, heavy Nutri-Peak box in his arms.

"'Sup, little dude," I greet the crumpled heap on my floor.

"Hey-o Eric!" he replies, chipper as ever.

"Woof woof!" Alopix adds.

"Piiiiiix!" Robbie cheers.

I help the kid up so he can race over to hug my dog. "Thanks for bringing in my box."

"Easy peasy," Robbie shrugs. "I was coming over to grab Pix for a walk anyway. Lucky timing!"

Alopix bounds over to his leash and leaps up to grab it off its hook with his teeth. "Bark woof!" he agrees.

"You know it, boy!" Robbie says, grinning. He turns to me. "Didn't expect to see you out so soon. Is there a glitch or something?"

"Nah," I say at first, but then I frown. "Well, maybe. Somehow I've already gone through four bottles of Nutrient Solution, so I needed this delivery."

"That's impossible!"

"I thought so, too. I'll contact Nutri-Peak later to complain, maybe score some free shit-uff. Stuff. Free stuff."

Not cussing around children is fucking difficult.

"Are you kicking everyone's asses?" Robbie asks.

Thinking about my epic cursed blades and stacked attributes, I smirk and do one of those asshole half-shrugs that barely pretends to be humble. "I'm doing all ri—What the frick, kid! Language!"

"What? Dad's always saying he can't wait to see you back in action, kicking ass, slaying haters, and, uh...what was it? 'Reminding those Digital Discord twat-waffles what a real pro is.'"

I'm touched.

I'm also horrified I heard a sweet, innocent third-grader say "twat-waffle." (And impressed by Deion's expansive cursing vocabulary.)

"What's a twat-waffle?"

"At least three years' worth of blackmail against your Dad for me, and an automatic grounding for you, if Pops Theo ever hears you say that."

Robbie gulps. "Gotcha."

We chat for a few more minutes, and then boy and dog run out the door for fun adventure times.

Feeling a little lonely in the sudden silence, I focus on getting back to the game. I slice open the box. The bottles look completely different from the usual solution. Instead of clear, the liquid inside is mint green and thicker, like a milkshake. S-Prime Solution is blazoned across the label.

S-grade nutrients? There were rumors Nutri-Peak and Vir-Tech labs had teamed up to improve the liquid nutrients to a whole new level, but people assumed they were years away from a meaningful breakthrough.

I grab my phone and check online to see if anyone's mentioned S-grade nutrients. Nothing, nobody.

Nervous, I take the first bottle to the V-Haven. The machine won't accept anything except real Nutri-Peak solution. I remove an empty A-grade, click the new bottle into place, and hold my breath.

[S-Prime Solution accepted. Please remove all remaining A-grade bottles and replace with Nova Prime Upgrade solutions.]

Whew. Relieved, I replace the bottles, including the one with a sliver of solution left.

[Calculating Remaining Time to Next Nutrient Exchange . . .]

[Based on player consumption history, current levels should last 120 Hours.]

Whoa! That's double how long the A-grade were supposed to last. Let's hope it's right this time.

Ready to roll again, I do a few simple stretches before climbing back into the pod.

With that, she left through the door leading inside.  Some family groups wandered down the steps and out toward the lake.  Another few followed Dr. Hobbs inside.  Jenny and Cole remained on the deck.

Would you like to sit down? she asked him.

Cole glanced at the half-dozen wooden rocking chairs scattered the length of the terrace.  Sure, he nodded.

The walked to the far end of the deck and selected the last two chairs.  Its pretty here, Cole observed.

Jenny nodded.  It is.  I like to sit here when I have kitchen duty.  She turned and grinned at him.  I made the blueberry muffins for breakfast this morning.  I sat out here while they baked.  Its so peaceful early in the morning.  Sometimes you see deer.

Blueberry muffins, huh?  That sounds good.  He gave her an exaggerated side-long glance.  I dont believe you ever made blueberry muffins for me.  I feel kind of left out.

Blushing, Jenny laughed lightly.  Coles heart ached at the cherished sound.  I guess I didnt get around to it.

I guess not, he agreed softly.

Jenny sighed deeply.  We have an appointment to meet with Dr. Hobbs after lunch.  

Cole watched her swipe her palms across the thighs of her jeans.  He nodded.  They told me that in the email.

Im really sorry.  I mean, you dont have to if you dont want to.

Why are you sorry, Jenny?  Its all part of you completing your time here.

She shrugged lightly and picked at an invisible thread on her pant leg.  I know, but its supposed to be family therapy, and youre not really family, so I just want to make sure you know youre not obligated, thats all.

Anxiety thrummed through Coles veins like electricity.  Do you want me to be there?

Jennys right foot jiggled frenetically.  Yes, she said softly, her eyes downcast.  If you want to come.

I always want to be there for you, Jenny.  Hed never said anything truer.

She blushed again and looked out over the lake.  Ive started doing yoga in the mornings.  I cant remember if I told you that on the phone.  But I really like the way it gets my day started.

Cole nodded and smiled, ignoring the abrupt change of topic.  Yeah?  Yoga?

Jenny nodded.  I really like it.  And did I tell you that I passed my GED?  With everything that happened, I missed the end of my senior year, so I never graduated.  I took the test the first week I was here, and now Im taking college courses online.

Coles eyes widened with surprise.  Are you?  No, I dont think you did tell me that.

Im studying business.  Dr. Hobbs has a deal with Montana State.  Mountain Haven clients can earn our degrees online or in person for free.

Wow, thats  Cole glanced at Jenny.  Thats really great.  Are you thinking about going to college here now that youre finished at Mountain Haven?  His calm question belied the way his pulse pounded in his ears.

Jenny shook her head.  I dont want to stay in Montana.  Besides, I like studying online.  She frowned slightly.  I dont think I want all the noise of being on campus.

Cole nodded.  Its pretty quiet at the ranch.  

Dammit!  Dont push her, he chided himself.

Jenny just nodded, and the conversation fell into an awkward silence.

Cole cleared his throat.  So youre studying business?  What do you want to do?

Pursing her lips shyly, Jenny glanced his way.  Id really like to start my own bakery.  Now that I have the insurance money and the money from the sale of the house, I can afford to buy a storefront and trick it out the way I want.  I figured a degree in business was a smart way to get started.

That sounds like a real good idea, Cole grinned.  Theres an empty space next to the saddle shop that might make a great spot.  Its next to the saddle shop.  He chuckled.  Course, youd probably never be able to get rid of Brithania and the kids.  

Inside, he winced.  Youre pushing her again.  Just stop it.

Jenny frowned slightly and nodded.  But before she could respond, a series of chimes sounded.  She stood.  Lunch, she smiled.  Those are the tones for lunch.

That dream again. I've been having these recurring nightmares for a few weeks now. It's always that bathroom. I need to put an end to these nightmares so I want to find that bathroom in the waking world. To that end, I've completed several sketches of it. Some in it's decayed state and some drawn to resemble what I think it might've looked like before. "My name...what is it?" I always forget who I am for a minute after I wake up. That's who I am" Good. I've remembered. 

I slowly sit up in my bed, my skin is sticking to the bed from all the sweat as usual. I take my phone off the charger and check for notifications. I've started posting the sketches to online forms in hopes of someone recognizing it. As it turns out, I'm in luck. I have a message from someone on Deddit. 

"That bathroom you're looking for is in the old abandoned St. Patrick general hospital on Orange Grove Ave."

I type a quick "thank you" then I take to the internet and look up the hospital he mentioned. Turns out it closed down 15 years ago and no one's done anything with it since. There were plans to renovate it a few years ago but it just never happened. Why'd it close down? I continue scrolling through the Nikapedia article.

Jesus christ. So this place tortured teens under the guise of treating them? This is sickening. But at least I have an address now, hopefully with this I can put these damn dreams behind me. I have free time since my seasonal job as a shopping mall Santa is over. The address is a few cities away, I guess I should head out now. But first I leave a note for my friend or anyone else who comes looking for me while I'm gone.
