"Huh... You're right sir Henry... Come on, let's go."

"Thanks, Mercer." Asher smiled at him.

Suddenly they heard a shout from afar,

"Sci-fi is the best! You all shove your fantasy junk up to your butts!"

Mercer enrages and growls, "You imbecile! You dare insult fantasy! Come out and fight like a man!"

Then a group of people wearing sci-fi costumes appeared out of nowhere. A guy in front of them shouted,

"You heard me! Fantasy is ancient history, while sci-fi is the advanced future!"

The people behind him cheered for joy and fury.

The king saw this unacceptable as he pulls Mercer out to the front and he exclaimed,

"You dare speak ill of the fantasy! Our magic, unity, and weapons will wreak havoc upon your land! Our champion Mercer will decide your fate!"

The people behind them also cheered and chanted Mercer's name.

Asher thought, 'I have a feeling that something's gonna be on fire after all of this.'

The sci-fi leader laughed at their champion, "He looks like a nobody! Unlike our best fighter, Oliver!"

A boy with a scavenger costume, a staff, and fake battle scars walked to the front and said,

"I challenge you! Champion of the fantasy group to fight me!"

Mercer replied, "Really? A challenge? You'll regret those words, good sir, why don't you go back and play your alien games in your grandma's basement!"

"OHHHH!!!! BURN!!!" Shouted the crowd behind Mercer.

Oliver points his staff to Mercer and whispered, "You're dead."

Both of them walked closer to each other, looked at each other eye to eye. They didn't say a word until a guy appeared that looked like a referee.

"What the?" Asher said to himself.

The referee asked Mercer and Oliver, "Alright, heads or tails?"

Mercer answers, "Heads."

"Tails," Oliver answered also.

The referee flips a coin and it lands back to his wrist, the coin showed heads.

The referee explains, "Okay, heads meaning the situation will be fantasy-based. The situation: a castle that is swarmed by fire breathing dragons, a necromancer, and a damsel in distress. You must rescue the damsel and get out of the castle alive before the necromancer kills you. Rules, vehicles, or heavy artillery are prohibited, use of god-tier powers will result in disqualification, and no changes of the scenario or objective, got it? Now, your characters?!"

Oliver responded, "A fleet commander."

"An assassin." As well as Mercer.

The referee continues, "Two dragons attempt to attack you, what will you do?"

Mercer quickly answered, "Easy! Bring their attention to the fleet commander!"

"Roll for distraction!"

Mercer rolls his dice, "18!"

"You bastard!" Oliver snarled.

"The dragons try to attack you, fleet commander! What will you do?" The referee asked.

Oliver thinks for a second then he said, "I'll use my lightsaber to cut the dragons' neck!"

"Roll for attack!"

"19!" Oliver uses his dice as well.

"The dragons have been defeated, but the necromancer noticed your arrival!"

Mercer shouted, "I'll make a dummy of myself and throw it at the fleet commander while I go inside the castle!"

The referee said, "Roll for speed!"

"13!"

"You've thrown the dummy to the fleet commander, the necromancer attacks it!"

"I use a force shield!" Oliver declared.

The referee said, "Roll for defense!"

"20!"

"You've succeeded in defending yourself, now the necromancer will go after the assassin!"

"Ha! In your face!"

"The necromancer tries to find you inside the castle!"

Mercer quickly said, "I hide!"

"Roll for stealth!"

"Dang it 8!"

"You almost got away from the necromancer when you suddenly made a noise!"

"I find the damsel with my heat seeker!" Oliver yelled.

"Roll!"

"14!"

"You found the damsel but the necromancer got in your way."

Mercer smiles, "Heh, sneak past the necromancer and hold the damsel!"

"Roll!"

"20!"

"You managed to grab hold to the damsel without being noticed by the necromancer!"

"Yes!"

"Now the necromancer tries to attack the fleet commander with undead warriors!"

Oliver thinks his way out of this, "I summon robot clones!"

"Roll!"

"15!"

"You managed to eliminate the undead warriors and wound the necromancer with your robot clones!"

"I guess I'll leave the fighting to you." Mercer said, "Now I carry the damsel, tame a dragon, and ride it to escape!"

"Roll!"

Mercer rolled his dice, "...Yes! 20!"

"You carried the damsel, tamed a dragon, and rode it to escape!"

"No!" Oliver shouted, "This can't be happening!"

"It already has!" Mercer proudly said.

The referee exclaimed, "The damsel was rescued... By the assassin! Therefore, Mercer, the Assassin wins!"

The fantasy group cheered for joy as they carry Mercer up high.

Asher smiled and thought, "Well... That's one way of fighting... I guess..."

Mercer boasted, "Well? Do you now know who is the more superior genre? Your majesty, can you guess what it is?"

The king happily replied, "Well, it's hard to answer that... Oh wait, I know! It's FANTASY!"

They laughed hard until Oliver charged at Mercer and as they wrestle the tension got real.

Asher asked the king, "Hey your majesty, should we stop them? I mean I know you guys don't get along..."

The king replied, "Though a brawler would say that we should just let them be, I am king and as king-- Yes we should DEFINITELY stop them... Hey admiral!"

"Shut up tight pants!" The admiral insults the king.

"Asher, my dear royal subject. Kindly remove your eyes and ears from me, for what am I about to do is not royalty... Alright douchebag, you want some of this! You want me? By the time you get close, you dead! You hear me!? Dead!" The king threatened the admiral.

Asher backs away as they all charged at each other and fight like animals. Some jocks noticed the fight.

"Hey look at that, nerd fight"

"Woah nerd fight? It's even more brutal this year!"

"Hey look, Asher's watching them too."

"Oh, that means it's getting good!"

"Yeah let's go."

They walked around the fight and became audiences along with Asher.

They asked, "Hey Ash, how long have you been here?"

"Well, these guys were having a 'fight' then it ended in a real fight?" Asher answered.

"Ha! It's like playing grandma games until grandma took a shotgun for a test!"

"I'm guessing this'll all end with someone being lit on fire."

"Yes! I know this! Rumor has it, when you're watching a fight, and you try to guess how it ended, it'll come true! Classic Asher."

"Yeah... But we should stop them or they'll be left with no teeth."

"Hahahahahahaha! Classic Asher indeed!"

Then Mercer and Oliver wrestled over the field, meanwhile a kid was playing with a magnifying glass although the kid didn't know that the cheerleaders' banner was starting to burn.

Mercer and Oliver fought until they reached to the cheerleaders' banner, suddenly Mercer backed away from Oliver.

Oliver asked, "Oh what? You got scared? You're tired? Or--"

"You're on fire." Mercer pointed Oliver's back, much to his surprise.

The jocks laughed at the prediction coming true. Oliver tries to run, and pushed Mercer away causing him to fall on his face.

"STOP! DROP! AND ROLL!" Asher yelled at Oliver.

"He can't hear you because he's too busy running! Ha!" The jocks laughed so hard their stomachs start to hurt.

Asher approached Mercer and pulled him up. Mercer silently walks away and said,

"Let's go."

"Uhh, ok?" Asher said, "Bye guys!"

The jocks couldn't speak because they were laughing too hard so they waved goodbye instead.

Present time

"So all for that to happen is because your cousin played Dungeons & Dragons past versus future edition against a guy who was a sore loser for him to catch fire?" Esther asked.

Asher answers, "Yes, although I don't know how the banner catched fire in the first place."

"Goodness... Luckily you didn't fought them."

"I thought, if Esther were here what would she do?"

"Basically just leave him there, let him fight, and pretend that you don't know him. But waiting for him is also what I would do too."

"I know because you're like an angel."

"Is that your way of admiring me? I'm flattered, and it didn't even happened on television. Should I still follow that advice of yours Heather?"

"I thought you were kidding?" Heather wipes off the dirt on Mercer's face while asking him, "Now, how does it feel to win both mentally and physically?"

"Terrible." Mercer answered.

Parker brings the first aid kit, "Well he wouldn't have won that wrestling if it weren't for the banner on fire, but I wouldn't say for sure because he didn't say who was losing."

Asher laughs awkwardly, "I think there's not a day in this town that no one would fight."

Esther replies, "Universe says otherwise."

"How to write stories like a real author?"

Before you're good at making stories, you were a beginner like Asher.

Asher Westergard is a teenage boy whose dreams of becoming an author are coming to life, but he struggles to write a story that can be enjoyed by readers.

By chance he met Esther Violette, the acting librarian (Warning: Do not mess with her) who gladly helped him and became his teacher.

"Will he be able to fullfil his dreams?"

"If you don't shut up I'll sew that mouth of yours, even if it means breaking the fourth wall." Esther's voice was heard.

"He's just telling the description." Asher's voice as well.

The bright light slowly subsided, and Foo noticed that he stood in the corner of a lively plaza.

"Welcome to the city of beginnings" Sounded a monotone and almost lifeless voice.

Looking around and Foo saw that he was standing inside some sort of ritual circle. And the listless voice belonged to some sort of official that was seated close by. He had the airs of an veteran; one could feel that he had been saying that single sentence innumerable times, and was almost bored to death by it. Although his neat and scholarly robes, along with his frail build, indicated that he was not a warrior, it seemed like he would gladly pick up a sword and charge towards unbeatable enemies, just to vent his frustrations of this boring task.

By looking around to further assess his current situation, Foo noticed that there was multiple of these `teleportation circles` around, and further away was a queue of people stepping inside another lone circle, that seemed to be an outgoing teleportation circle, instead of the multiple incoming ones like the one he had come through.

The people in the queue all had medieval outfits. A couple of knights could be spotted, some that looked like priests, some merchant-like but most looked like the classical adventurers.

"Please step out of the teleportation circle, so that others may use it" Sounded the same dull voice again. Foo then quickly stepped outside of the circle, as one could not be sure if there were any kind of fail-safe that prevented another person to be teleported to the same space he occupied.

By tallying the facts Foo came to the conclusion that after he died, he was sent to this medieval world by the God. Although it could be much worse, he still felt pained over the fact that computers were most likely not existing in such a setting. But suddenly he came back to his senses. ``Priests? Teleportation circles? Magic!!`` Elated, Foo realized that it was quite likely, no actually it was a fact, that magic existed in this world. Magic! How could one not be ecstatic about magic?

And magic could explain why he suddenly had a body, although just some moments before he was just a soul. At that thought he looked down on his body, intent on figuring out the status of his new being.

He found out that his body was like the one he had before, and the clothes he was wearing was now that of a adventurer, not unlike some in the outgoing queue. It even came with a sword, a dagger and a pouch, which after further investigation showed to contain some coins. One golden coin, ten silver coins and ten copper coins.

The clothes was much more stiff than he was used to, although it was probably because it was much more resistant than just normal clothes. As it seemed to be able to protect against some minor attacks, the discomfort would probably be well worth it.

The whole getup reminded him of the fully immersive virtual reality role playing fantasy games he had played back home. Although even after some extensive testing, he could not bring up any kind of menu or status screen.

A bit disappointed that there where no game elements he was at a loss on what to do next. A game would be helpful enough to provide a tutorial, not that he usually would follow it if he could exploit *cough* explore on his own anyway, but it would be nice to fall back on when unsure on what to do. 

Another glance at the official and he got the feeling that if he were to initiate a dialog to ask some questions, he would either get into a fight as the official was obviously fed up with his job, or the official would get excited to have something to do, and thus Foo would never be able to escape from the constant blabbering of unimportant information.

Neither of the possibilities was desired, as such he resigned to his circumstances and strolled over the plaza that was filled with people passing to and fro. The plaza had different kind of stands that was selling merchandise. There was food, armor, weapons, potions and curious artifacts.

Although he was interested in the artifacts, he knew for sure that this should be a tourist trap with way higher prices and lower quality than reasonable. And he also had no idea of the value of the currency, not even the exchange rate between the different denominations. 

It could be dangerous to even look too closely at the artifact, because from the sly eyes of the seller one could be assure that if they started to speak you would end up penniless with nothing but junk in your pockets. These was masters of their trade, even if you came prepared, as long as they could sense any tiny bit of weakness they would certainly exploit you for maximum of profits.

So Foo quickly left the plaza with only a few glances on the items for sale. The feeling of relief when he exited the plaza was not to far from how it would have been to exit an ocean filled with sharks that were sniffing for blood that you might spill if you were careless.

 As a newcomer to this world, Foo knew there was only one thing that he could do in this situation. Register as an adventurer! Anyone would know that this is the proper action to take when arriving in a fantasy world. Of course, there might be a possibility that there were no such thing, but Foo had spotted quite some people that was looking quite like adventurers. There might not be a classical adventurers' guild, but he sure as hell would try to find it if it indeed does exist.

Of course, the next action after that would be to hunt some goblins or similar in the surroundings. A game would have some tutorial and quests as introduction, but this seemed more like a fantasy world, and thus the adventurer path was most likely the correct one.

Foo was no stranger to either games or fantasy worlds. In fact he was quite the avid player of the fully immersive virtual reality games in his old world. He was quite the skilled warrior, although he liked magic more. Of course, normally he could not use much of his martial knowledge in the real world, as the body in the real world was quite different from that in the games.

However currently his body felt free from the constraints that he had in the old world. It felt as if the body was able to follow his mind on a completely different level. He was confident that he could use all the hours of playing martial games to his advantage, were he to be in a fight.

 Foo suddenly snapped out of his thoughts as he arrived in front of an imposing building. The words `Adventurers' guild` was hanging above the doors. ``Lucky!`` He thought, although it was more probable it was by design that you could travel directly between the plaza with teleportation circles and the Adventurers' guild. As it was clearly an important building.

Without any hesitation whatsoever, Foo pushed open the doors and entered.

Foo, a bright young man that happens to be a computer genius, who excels in life by taking shortcuts when possible. If life was a game, he would definitely pick the easiest mode.

        Exams in school? Just read all the books once, and make sure you don’t forget the contents.

        Looking for a job? Make sure everyone around the boss knows just how perfect you are for the job. Having others bragging about your excellence is more trustworthy and gives plausible deniability.

        Quiz time? Let me just start my special search engine's voice recognition.

        Competing in soccer? Aw, how unfortunate, the opposing team 'somehow' got their clothes filled with itch-inducing powder, leading to a walkover.

        Playing a FPS game? Well, lets just have my own mouse driver software get some headshots while I watch a movie. It’s perfectly legit, as it just speeds up the response time so that it clicks before I even get to the computer.

        Gambling sites and online casinos? Data-mining, number-crunching and image recognition! By utilizing computer knowledge, solving problems is easy!

        Some might get jealous, but hey! Just be like me, and use your brains for once!

However, in the modern era, the gangsters and other shady businesses are moving their turfs towards the internet and gaming circles.

What happens when they realize that Foo was a threat to their profits?

Well, no suspense here, they killed him.




That’s the end of story... if you are to believe the god that greets him after his death.

However, can this story get a fresh new start when Foo somehow ends up in a game-like medieval fantasy world?

Or will the lack of modern tools, like his beloved computers or other modern conveniences, cut his story short yet again?

For example, he installed a ceiling for the Desolation God System and the Void Mask God System to use and made it the core of the "game program" for gods to live and train. In every layer, the space was utilized creatively to allow it to seem much bigger than it was. The only exception was the ceiling, as the gods did not care much, and Sui Xiong thus did not care much either.
Using space technology with the gods was a waste of time. As long as there was no main control, even the least powerful gods like Javier could resize the layer to their own liking. Be it elephants, a giant Orc that could polish off five elephants in one go or insects that could hide between leg hairs—it was not a problem to resize them. For powerful beings like Sui Xiong and Yorgaardman, they could even greatly increase the size of the Main Plane layer or decrease it to the size of a cell with ease. However, to create the layer like a fantasy or to make it omnipresent or invisible was beyond them. Even Yorgaardman was stunned by these matters and did not know how to make such drastic changes. In his view, even the Master of Order could not do such a thing.
To reach a fantasy-level layer, it was hard to imagine how one could do so. This was because with the increase in one's standard of living in reality, one would also increase their visions of a fantasy layer, and there would always be something out of reach. Of course, it had been done before such as in the case of the core of Void Mask Lord's game, which was a place where one could transform fantasy into reality. There were several games here, and one could choose from the simple "new adventurer" stage to "mercenary legend stage" or the highest level of "unlimited thrill." Each game was full of waiting users who wanted to try them.
At the entrance of the game center, two clergymen were in charge of the registration list. Those who wanted to play the games had to make reservations three days in advance in order to not be disappointed. They had to line up for three days or more in advance, especially for games like "unlimited thrill."
On the games' most popular days, there would be thousands of people who lined up overnight and who scared off others from trying. Of course, there would even be some who lined up for more than a day and who stood in the freezing streets just for a chance to try the game three days later. There was no choice as there were only 20 sets of "unlimited thrill." If there wasn't the limit of being able to enter only once every ten days, some people may rejoin the line right after their turn!
Looking at the long line, Sui Xiong couldn't help but laugh. He felt that he had created people who were game addicts here in this world, a concept previously only familiar on Earth. It would be amusing if a sudden wild Professor Yang appeared in this world and nagged, "Children, you need treatment for your gaming addiction…"

Chapter 15 – His Analysis
Adrian arrived in front of the Green Orchid Settlement and he saw how the settlement looked like. He looked left and right at the settlement and it looked like the settlement was not big. 
The houses were not a house. They were shacks and what he saw now looked exactly like a poverty area in a picture he saw while learning history in elementary school. 
The fence covering the settlement was poorly made and they did not look like they would give protection to the residence. 
Adrian saw a few NPCs in the settlement walking around and they wore tattered clothes and seemed to suffer from malnutrition too. 
Adrian walked through the fence to search for the settlement's gate. A simple kick could easily destroy the fence but he would not do that. 
After a minute of walking, Adrian found the gate. In front of the gate stood a young man who seemed to be in his teen years holding a wooden spear. The young man wore better clothes. Even so, he was not that much different compared to the NPCs in the settlement. 
The young man noticed Adrian and he stood up excitedly. "Another Lost Human!" the young man shouted excitedly. 
'Lost Human?' Adrian questioned in his mind. 
"Welcome! Welcome! You are the 70th Lost Human who arrived in our poor settlement," the young man spoke excitedly and he ran towards Adrian. 
"I am Kevin, Green Orchid Settlement's West Gate Guard," Kevin introduced himself excitedly. "I am not a real guard but someone needs to take this job," Kevin smiled. 
Adrian could see it. Kevin did not have the physique of a guard. He was skinny and did not look like someone who could fight too. 
"I am Adrian," Adrian introduced himself too since Kevin told his name too. 
"Hehe, I know," Kevin looked above Adrian's head. 
"!" Adrian was surprised. "You-you can see my name above my head?" Adrian was shocked. NPC in fantasy games could not view Player's basic info such as name and level but Kevin could do that. 
"Why not? I just need to appraise you and I can see your name and level above your head. You can do that too, right?" Kevin spoke cheerfully. 
"All of you Lost Humans all have this reaction. What is so surprising about it? Maybe you guys forgot about it? You guys can do that too. You have the system too, right?" Kevin spoke excitedly. 
"!!!" Adrian was shocked once again. 'The NPC in Progress have access to the game menu?' Again, NPC in fantasy games could not access the game menu. 
Adrian calmed himself. From Kevin's reaction and statement, Adrian knew that all the Players who had arrived at the settlement were shocked too. 
"So, Lost Humans…" Adrian spoke and pointed at himself, "Is it me?" 
"Yes. You don't remember where you come from, right?" Kevin asked. 
"…" Adrian was silent. 'Ah, this is the setup for Players in Progress,' Adrian understood. 
"Lost Humans are humans who have no memories about this world and the only thing they remember are their names and how to use the system. If you want to know about the system, it is the ability all humans in this world will gain once they are 10 years of age," Kevin explained. 
"Is that so?" Adrian nodded. 
"We receive a mission from the system that 78 Lost Humans will arrive at this settlement and we need to receive them unconditionally," Kevin spoke. 
'So, only 78 Players choose this settlement. Well, it is understandable because this is the lowest grade settlement,' Adrian nodded. 
"Let's go. The Leader will tell you what happens after all 78 Lost Humans arrived," Kevin led the way to the settlement. Adrian followed silently behind him and when they passed other NPCs, they all looked excited when they saw Adrian. 
'I wonder what the mission describes us?' Adrian thought because all of them looked super happy with his arrival. At the same time, Adrian received a notification for mission completion but he did not check it as he arrived in the middle of the settlement and Adrian could see the other Players waiting there. 
Adrian recognized a few of them. He had seen them at Orchid City College. They did not take the same course but he did saw them a few times. 
As for the others, he did not recognize any of them. A few of them were older than him and most of them were younger than him. Adrian could see that there were more high schoolers than middle schoolers. Ceylon and Keith were not present in the group. 
Since Adrian did not know any of them, he decided to sit by himself. Suddenly getting all familiar with the other Players would look weird. 
"Then, I will excuse myself," Kevin spoke and left Adrian there alone. Adrian glanced at the other Players again and he could see that some of them knew each other. Possibly, they were the same as Adrian, Ceylon, and Keith. 
'Adeline is not here. I guess, she chooses the higher-grade settlement,' Adrian thought. 
Adeline was Adrian's younger sister who got scammed by an entertainment agency to become an idol. One of the people in Adrian's family who caused a lot of trouble. 
'I guess she will not choose her hometown,' Adrian thought. 
"Adrian~" Suddenly, Adrian heard a familiar voice and when he looked in that direction, Ceylon was walking towards him. 
"You are here," Adrian smiled. 
"Did you wait long?" Ceylon asked and he sat on the ground beside Adrian. 
"I just got here. Not even for five minutes," Adrian replied. 
"Then, Keith is the latest or maybe he got knocked out by some monster and was forced to log out," Ceylon spoke while snickering. 
"I can hear you," Suddenly Keith appeared behind them shocking both Adrian and Ceylon. "Hmph! I have been here much earlier than Adrian and I walk around the settlement to see if I can find anything interesting," Keith spoke. 
"Then, you must have been running away from monsters and arrived earlier than us," Ceylon talked back. 
"…" Keith wanted to fight back but they were in public and there were many other Players around. He did not want his image to be someone stupid or brute. Keith sat on the ground beside Adrian too. 
"So, have you guys figure out the setting of Progress?" Keith asked. 
"Uh-huh," Ceylon nodded before he said, "It is shocking. They can use the game menu like us and all of them have the same function as us." 
"Will they be suspicious when they see us talking to each other like this?" Adrian suddenly spoke. "We are Lost Humans after all," Adrian added. 
"If they ask, we will just say we can remember being friends and we are indeed friends, so, we are not lying," Ceylon replied. While the trio was talking, a few more Players or Lost Humans arrived. 
"Nah, no need to worry about anything. They are NPCs after all. There is a limit to what they can do," Keith brushed that issue aside. 
"I don't think so," Ceylon spoke while looking in a direction. Keith and Adrian looked too and saw a few NPCs whispering something to each other while pointing in the direction of a group of Players. 
"…This game must have cost the World Government a lot," Keith spoke and he started to practice in his mind if the NPC asked about Adrian and Ceylon. 
"Not only the NPC but the creatures are also intelligent too. The slime and Sharp Teeth White Rabbit I fought all exhibit high intelligence. They did not have a specific habit or set of moves. They act in a way suitable in that situation," Adrian spoke. 
The slime he lost to at the beginning learned something and moved differently when the same moves failed. The Sharp Teeth White Rabbit that Adrian defeated was similar too. It bit and broke the sickle because it knew the sickle was Adrian's weapon. 
"Future is really the Super AI. He creates this game and everything is on a different level compared to other fantasy games," Keith was impressed. 
"I wonder what this game will actually be?" Ceylon spoke. He had been playing this game for a while but still had no idea how it would be. It looked like it would be the same Fantasy RPG but his opinion changed when he arrived at the Green Orchid Settlement. 
If it was the same as the usual Fantasy RPG, this settlement would be a beginner city or town but the state of the settlement said otherwise. Green Orchid Settlement was far from being a beginner city, town, or village. 
The settlement did not have the necessary things that Players in normal Fantasy RPG needed. This settlement was barren and poor. There was nothing useful at all. 
"The state of this place and the name of the game tells everything about the game," Adrian spoke and he continued, "This is a town-building game." 
"…" Ceylon and Keith went silent. 
"The World Government wants to help the younger generation to walk the right path again and this game will be able to do that. Maybe not everything but this is a good start," Adrian spoke. 
"So, they want us to develop our talent through a town-building game… D***, I screw up," Ceylon had a headache. Keith did not say anything because he screwed up big time. 
"They mix town-building game and Fantasy RPG to make it interesting. A normal town building will be boring and with Fantasy RPG elements added to the game, it will not be that boring," Adrian added. 
"More so, when we need to gain the stats in real-life by reading and exercising, All of that is to help us get on track again. The mandatory rule is to force middle schooler and high schooler to study well." 
"They need to start early. Elementary school is too early and may give bad results instead. College students and above are too late at this point because the mold is hardened now. To soften the mold and shape it in the right shape, it will need a lot of determination and thus, the 1:1 exchange rate," Adrian smiled. 
"The exchange rate is the softener to force older people to try and work hard to change. Their determination for money will help them to change while playing the game. Either this will work or not, we just need to wait," Adrian gave his analysis.
"You see all of that?" Keith was shocked. 
"That is from what I have observed. I may be wrong," Adrian replied. While the trio was talking a few more Players arrived and at this time, an NPC arrived and stood in front of everyone.

Progress was a game created by Rizend’s World Government to help deal with the problem created by VR. Progress was a mandatory curriculum for students in middle school and high school. 
Progress was a fantasy RPG game that used real-world achievement or work to become stronger. This was done to encourage people to play while working hard in the real world. 
Adrian was from a farming family. When the World Government announced Progress as the mandatory curriculum, Adrian was in his 1st Year of college.
Progress was an opportunity for Adrian to solve a problem he had. As Adrian was living honestly throughout his life, he was given a bit of an advantage in Progress. Using this advantage, Adrian played the game seriously to solve his problem.

"Do you play video games?" Darren asked. 

"I play puzzle games mostly," Maria replied. "There's this game I was interested in but I couldn't afford it." 

Darren gave her a tablet with game controls attached to the sides where her hands would go. "Since you're training to be a fashion designer, I'm guessing you play a lot of fashion-type games or dress-up games, right?" 

"Yeah." 

"How about a multiplayer game?" 

Maria shook her head as her brow furrowed deeper. She could not understand why he was asking her so many questions about games and fashion. 

Her questions were soon answered when Darren said, "I want you to design an outfit for a strong female character who's classified as a battlemage in a science fantasy video game." 

Maria's eyes went wide as she looked at Darren incredulously. She scoffed. "Uh, I don't know what that means." 

"Science fantasy incorporates elements of science fiction as well as fantasy elements like magic. Think Star Wars V. Star Trek. Star Wars is more fantastical, it just happens to take place on other planets with advanced technology while Star Trek is more sci-fi with their technology and heavy emphasis on explaining their futuristic science to make it feel real," Darren explained. "My character is a battlemage that means she can fight up close with a weapon while she also has the ability to cast magic spells on her weapon or from long distance. One of her personal characteristics is that she loves a good party with her friends. Based on the information I just gave you, I want you to design clothes this character would wear." 

Her eyes widened in surprise at his words. "Are you trying to offer me a job?" 

Darren scratched the back of his head as he chuckled. "Well, yea- not really. I want to make a video game and I need character designs. I used to love magical girl cartoons when I was little because I loved the outfit changes. So, since you're a designer, I suddenly got the idea to add a fashion aspect." 

Maria's eyes lit up as she looked at Darren. The thought about a fighting video game also having a fashion aspect really appealed to her. She also liked watching television about girls who were strong but also looked fashionable while doing it. Most of those cartoons were created before she was even born but they were on the internet and she loved them. She especially got interested in fashion because of a cartoon about a group of fairies who loved fashion and changed outfits every episode. She later found out that each girl had their own stylist behind their animations. That was the first time she thought of becoming a fashion designer, designing clothes for her favorite cartoon characters. She later went on designing and making clothes for herself. 

Even in her conservative community, a woman learning to make clothing was in line with the gender roles so her parents let her learn how to sew, knit, and embroider. All she did in her free time was designing and making new clothes from her the old, unfashionable clothes her parents bought for her. She learned to draw and design fashion by watching youtube videos. After she found out she was engaged, she used some of the money from her job to register in an online fashion design course for a more professional resume. With the rest of her money, she applied to a fashion school in LA and left home. 

Now, she could no longer go back to school, but Darren found another chance to help her. She could keep practicing her designs for video game characters, which could also go on her resume as she tried to find another way to become a professional fashion designer. 

"What do you want to do, Maria? You don't seem like the type who only likes fashion design just to be famous," Darren said. 

"I just want to design and make my own clothes," she replied. "It's my obsession. I can't live without designing." 

"That's all you need. Wouldn't you rather have a side job where you can keep practicing and bettering your designs while you try to get back on your feet?" Darren said. "That's what I'm offering. A chance to practice and become better. And I can pay you some money for it." 

Maria smiled as she nodded furiously. "Okay." 

"Okay," Darren said, "You've been making clothes for humans mostly. But video games have rules because players make assumptions about characters based on the type of clothes and the color of the clothes they wear. That's why I gave you that description of my female character and why I asked you if you played video games before." 

"I get it," she said. She looked at the gaming tablet in front of her. "Is this what this is for?" 

"Yeah. I'm gonna show you what I want." Darren created a new gaming account for himself and for Maria to guide her through the game. They looked carefully through a large number of characters. They looked at their outfits and their character descriptions, as Maria made mental notes about the characters she liked the most based on design. 

Maria chose to be a mage while Darren chose to be a swordsman. Maria played on the gaming tablet while Darren used his laptop. 

"Well, this is a little unexpected." 

Maria and Darren looked up from their devices to see Tora standing at the door. She looked at Darren, "And you should pay more attention to your surroundings. I can't believe you didn't hear me." 

Darren removed the headphones from his ears. "Hey, Tor," Darren greeted as he shut the computer. "I was actually not playing video games, I was writing a program." 

Tora smiled, mockingly, not believing a word he said. "Let's hope so. I hope you don't think you can just stay in my house without doing anything. Especially since you have no money." 

"You don't have money?" she said. "You just offered me a job. How are you going to pay me?" 

"I got into an accident a few months ago and was in a coma for six months," Darren explained. 

"Oh, my gosh," she replied as she placed her hands to her mouth. 

"I lost my job and my home. I just woke up a month ago and just decided to start a video game company," Darren explained. "I still have some investments in bonds and mutual funds so I'll use that and some money from a friend to start everything while I live with Tora." 

Darren got up and gave Tora a hug. "Maria, this is my oldest friend, Tora. Tora, meet Maria." 

Tora smiled as she extended her hand out to Maria. Maria accepted and they shook hands. "Nice meeting you." 

"You, too," Maria replied. 

"You'll be staying with my mom in Burbank," Tora said. "But she said, the room won't be free. Rent will be a thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars." 

Maria nodded enthusiastically. She had been searching for an apartment but she could not find anything for less than around three thousand dollars. Even a studio in LA and the surrounding areas were too expensive for her budget. "Where is the house?" 

"Burbank." 

Burbank, Maria thought. It was not far from Downtown LA and she could just take the transit to and from work. "Thank you so much," Maria said. "I'm really grateful." 

"Don't mention it," Tora said. "Just work on getting better." 

"But, I'll need to get my stuff out of my dorm at the school," she said. 

"Don't worry about that. I'm here, remember. You just need to worry about your health," Darren replied.
