"Good morning chars " I greeted cheerfully and stepped towards him with open arms.

"GET out Vanessa," Charlie said without looking at me and still putting the comic on the shelves.

"What?" was all I asked, "are you talking to me chars?"

"Damn nessa, no offense, your mom still has it" Aden commented while sipping his drink.

"Aden really," Vanessa said rolling her eyes.

"What? can't a man be honest," Aden dramatically placed a hand on his heart.

"But nessa, I don't understand, You been a hitcher or cupid matchmaker, still your mom is single WHY?" 

"What WHY?" Vanessa questioned while trying to copy Aden.

"Aden's right," Kova agreed.

"Come on girl, USE YOUR BLESSING ON YOUR MOM AND HITCH HERR," Aden whispered standing up and pointing at Vanessa.

The little blue Corvette idles on the street in front of Cosmo's Comics & Café, but I'm reluctant to get out. The fog's already lifted from the city and temperatures are above fifty-five. It's set to become a beautiful day in the Bay. I have three spectacular friends waiting inside on plush couches with a sugary breakfast of French toast smothered with caramel and chocolate. Four months ago I'd be out of the car by now. Today my feet won't move in their direction. I love my friends, but there's someone better beside me.

"You'll call me when you girls finish for the day, right?" Ryland turns on the hazard lights, the little dings with each blink filling in our silence.

I blow out a breath against the window, fogging up a small area, which quickly disappears. "Yeah."

"You're going to be late."

Aspen texted me last night with news she had a surprise for us this morning. I don't like surprises. At least surprises I don't know about in advance. "We could go back to your place and play DR." I try to tempt him to drive away.

"Is everything okay?" he asks, not taking me up on the offer.

"Yeah." More condensation builds on the window only to dissipate as fast.

Ryland leans over placing a hand on the back of my neck, his fingers caught in a few strands of hair. "You love your girl time on Sundays. Since Aspen took over Cosmo's we men have been relegated to Finn's place."

"Well she wasn't allowed to have all of us over at one time per her old rules, so really that's your fault." I laugh and put my hand on the door handle, the closest I've come to leaving. "And don't let Finn fool you. The guys hang out at Cosmo's on Sunday mornings every once and a while. He just doesn't want to get out of his pajamas this early most weekends." I totally understand.

"That sounds like Finn." He pulls me closer. "Go enjoy the nice couches and gossip, but no pillow fights or whatever else you girls might do together. You'll give the nerds heart attacks."

"Okay." I shake my head a few times at him. "I'll make sure to let Aspen know our clothes have to stay on this week."

I close the distance between us expecting a quick peck on the lips, but Ryland pulls me toward him. My heart picks up and I fist the fabric of his white shirt stopping any retreat. He bites my lower lip as he pulls away, his lips tipped up smiling down at me before he lets go.

It's the sendoff I needed. "Saucy, Tiger." I release his shirt and pat it down, and then I open the door and step out to the sidewalk before I change my mind.

I refuse to stand on the street and watch him drive away, so once his hazard lights shut off, I turn and walk into Cosmo's.

The comic shop we've spent Sundays at since the weather turned too cold for Aspen is bright and airy for the small space it encompasses. The smell of coffee permeates the area. Exposed brick lines both walls, a large window and front door taking up the space at the entrance. To the left running most of the way along, there's a checkout and section for customers to order coffee and other hot drinks. The right wall's filled with metal shelving to display the comic book dolls and other boxed items. The middle of the store toward the front is stacked full of tall white box structures holding hundreds, maybe thousands, of various comics separated out by maker and then series.

Most of these areas are easy to overlook, but the back of the room draws my attention. Along the back wall, a few feet from a door marked employees only, three thick orange-ish colored couches form a half circle with a thick coffee table placed in the middle.

Tucked away from the two customers pawing through the stacks of comics wait Aspen, Amanda, and Simone as I suspected. Each claimed a couch as their own and I throw myself down on the opposite end of Aspen's. Her thick winter coat fills the empty space between us and I remove my purple San Francisco fleece and lay it on top.

"The next time you two try to make a porno on the street, let me know. I bet I'd make millions if I posted it online." She reaches to the coffee table and grabs a green mug, passing it to my waiting hand.

I breathe across the top to help cool the coffee with the one sugar she knows I need. "You saw, huh?"

"The whole street saw." Simone's eyes widen and she pulls on her blue sweater pretending to cool down. "It was hot."

Trey's right. We've definitely corrupted his sweet and innocent woman. I'm kind of proud how quickly it happened.

"So you two are like... a thing now... officially? A PDA kind of couple?" Aspen watches my face for any hint of a lie, but it's wasted effort. I'm not going to even try.

I pull out my cell phone. "Yes."

"Yes? That's all you have for us?" Amanda asks.

"Don't worry. She'll slip sooner or later and then we'll get our answers." Aspen answers for me pulling up one of the free comic books Jason, the store owner, leaves on the coffee table. She feigns interest in whoever the big green guy is fighting this edition.

She drops the comic within a minute and the conversation flows to important topics, such as why the food delivery is late and her weekly Finn update. He's still a nerd and they're grossly in love.

When nothing exciting comes up, even when Amanda shares her latest dating story, I reach for my phone out of habit and end up texting Ryland.

Me: You need tinted windows.

His response is almost immediate.

Ryland: I'll get right on that, Kitten.

I start to text back my standard complaint to not call me Kitten, the reply as much a part of our standard conversation as the nickname, but Aspen perks up and I draw my attention to where she stares out the large glass front window.

"Oh, good the food's here." Aspen tracks a guy as he walks past the front and opens the door.

My mouth started salivating before I walked in this morning and I've been impatiently waiting for someone to feed me since I sat down. Monday through Saturday I'm iffy on the whole breakfast meal, but Sundays... Sundays are the day where we call it brunch and use it as an excuse to stuff our faces with sugary goodness. Most weekends the promise of Tahiti French toast is the one reason I get out of bed.

Tyler asked Hazel a bunch of basic questions about those paintings. How many were there? Were the styles and subjects all roughly the same? Was her real name attached to the Etsy store?
He ended up coming to the same conclusion she had. It was almost as if someone had purposely bought all of her paintings despite their differences simply because they were hers. Which made absolutely no sense.
What rich person would waste so much money on a no-name artist over the course of five years? What on earth had gone through their head? 
When everyone else joined them in the back room for the catered lunch, Tyler asked for a second opinion because he was as stumped as Hazel was. They were all baffled too. 
Heather was the only other artist present but she knew almost nothing about the professional art world because she had taught herself how to draw with the goal of becoming a comic artist. She had created her own comics before and submitted them on fan-run sites. That was how Xander found her. 
Eva was the most concerned. "Hazel, if I didn't know any better I would say someone is stalking you. Are you positive your name wasn't affiliated with it at all?"
"Well my signature is in the bottom right corner of each piece but you can't really read it," she admitted. 
This discussion was making her feel worse. As far as she was aware, there was only one person who had ever stalked her and that was the private investigator Will hired to find her. But he said that had been only a couple of years ago. Those paintings had started selling long before then. 
Buying up all of her paintings simply because they were hers did sound like something Will would do…but that raised a few questions. Like how he had known the paintings were hers in the first place. Or had enough money to buy them all before making it big. 
Hazel didn't want to believe he had lied to her but who else would possibly buy every single one of her paintings? It was also suspicious that the gallery was in the same city he worked in. 
Will said he had made some sound investments with the money his mentor left him. Had Gallery 47 been one of them?
When did his mentor die anyway? He never clarified that. If he had the money way back then, why wouldn't he have tried to find her sooner? If he really was the owner of all those paintings, everything he told her about meeting her again hadn't been true. There were too many holes in the story that way. 
"I think you're all overreacting," Xander said matter-of-factly. "Think about it. There are so many people who collect things in the world. Some people collect old books or figurines. If somebody liked Hazel's early art enough wouldn't it make sense they would want the whole set?"
He had a point too. People could be weirdly OCD about certain things. Hazel would rather believe some random person with money to burn had taken a liking to her paintings than suspect the man she loved of having some ulterior motive. 
Will loved her. That was the one thing in this world she knew without a shadow of a doubt. Did any inconsistency about his past really matter now that they were together again? 
The conversation was dropped because it was nearly time for the panel to start. Everyone followed Paulina and Tracy into the room where the long table was set up with all of their name cards. 
Hazel sat down between Eva and Heather behind the name card that read "Hazel Sheffield aka lilmisstopaz" with "artist, Accidental Princess" underneath it in smaller letters. People were already filing into the room and sitting down, chatting among themselves or staring at the people sitting at the panelists' table. 
Eva was soaking up all the attention and waving at people left and right. Heather seemed pretty jazzed too. Tyler on the other hand, on the far end of the table, looked like he was going to be sick. 
Her heart went out to him. She was battling with nerves too, having never done anything like this before. Even group presentations in college had never been in front of this many people. 
During lunch Will had texted her to wish her luck since she had told him what time the panel was this morning. She tried clinging to the fact that he was rooting for her from over two thousand miles away to calm herself. 
He believed in her. All she had to do was believe in herself and answer some simple questions. 
Paulina, the facilitator of the panel, began at 1:30 PM sharp welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming. She gave a plug for the site before introducing everyone. As expected. This was their way to trying to boost readership. 
"…today we have three groups of talented people here to talk about how an online novel gets turned into a comic. Please join me in welcoming the masterminds behind Accidental Princess, The Last Dragon, and Mr. Extra Ordinary!" Paulina finished. 
Applause and catcalls filled the room and Hazel was already overwhelmed. These people were cheering for her, at least partially. Unbelievable. 
The authors started off with how they had chosen their artists. Elise went first, getting a few laughs when she admitted that she totally panicked with too many choices and her cousin had to bail her out. She was certain to clarify that once she saw samples of Tyler's work that she had fallen in love with his art style and thought it was perfect for her novel. 
Xander told everyone how he had scouted Heather from an original comic she was working on with sporadic updates. A few people in the room had actually read that comic and cheered when it was mentioned. 
When Eva was up, she talked about finding Hazel's fan art commission long before her novel was slated to become a comic and instantly thinking it would express her characters perfectly. Two people in the audience cheered at that. 
Hazel was astounded. Did they follow her blog? Had they commissioned fan art from her in the past? This was surreal.

“I’ll marry anyone who will take me!” Hazel declared loudly. “I don’t need love!”

“Get down!” Will hissed. “You don’t know what kind of people are lurking around in here! Talking like that might get you killed!”

Seagull, or Kei, as his close ones call him was very shy from the first. He is the youngest in the family. Kei was reading an article on the internet. Suddenly he saw that a new sequel of his favourite comic book has been released. He tried all means to buy it online but in vein. Kei then decided to go to the nearby book shop to buy the book.

On reaching the book shop, it was empty except for the store manager and a young girl who came suddenly searching for books. She seemed pretty but he didn't notice her much as the thoughts of the new book had filled up his mind. He went inside the bookstore but can't find the book. He saw one which the same girl was reading. He thought of asking the book from her but he is a celebrity, an idol. Neither can he show himself in public, nor can he talk to any passing stranger. At last, he stood beside the girl, a little far away, taking a book in his hand, trying to take a look at the page she was reading.

Suddenly, he heard a noise. Some fans have spotted him and he is surrounded now. He started running and anyhow disappeared, hiding in an alley at the back of the store. Standing there he began to reminisce about his past and present. A thought struck his mind. Was that girl the one who informed others of his presence or was she not? Did he hurt anyone while running. He blamed himself for getting into trouble and made his way towards home.

 The pounding noise continued to get louder as it woke Mitchell from her terrible nightmare. She shot up in a cold sweat, gasping for air. As her mind began to clear, the noise became more a more distinct beeping noise. "My alarm!" 
 Mitchell looked over to her end table, checking the time. She cringed as she slapped the "dismiss" button. "There's no way this has been going off for an hour!" She twisted her body to hang her legs off of the bed, accidentally kicking her cat, Kingsly. He hissed as he bolted off the bed into the bathroom. She could still hear him grumbling when there was a knock on her door. "What?" Mitchell asked dragging out the A's, clearly irritated with how her morning was going. 
 A husky blonde woman opened the door peeked her head into the room. "You never made it to the shop, I had to call your sister in so I could come and check on you. I was worried-" 
 "Okay mom... I'm up, I'm late, I get it." Mitchell sighed as she walked to the bathroom. She turned on the sink and splashed some water onto her face, trying to fully wake up to focus on the day. She looked up to the mirror and paused. There she was, but something was different today. Her reflection in the mirror showed her normal long brown hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, but something was off. She couldn't tell if it was more sadness in her eyes than normal, or if she was looking borderline frail for her normally busty frame. All she knew was something was different. She released a heavy sigh as she reached for her toothbrush, pausing to examine her hands. Burns. After applying a thick layer of eyeliner, a bit of mascara, and some bronzer she looked almost human. Or to her, not dead dead, whatever that meant in her dreams. 
 After combing her hair through and getting dressed in a floor length black skirt with a matching black crop top, she was ready to go. She bolted halfway down the stairs, then made a giant leap over the railing, landing on the couch next to the door. She reached down, grabbing a pair of simple black sandals and slipped her feet in. "Just lock up on your way out, please!" She called to her mom as she grabbed her small leather backpack off of a hook by the door. 
 Mitchell's mom hobbled down the stairs, holding the railing for security. "One of these days you need to move out of this townhouse. Too many stairs!" Her voice was raspy and out of breath. "Just wait two more minutes and we can ride together. You are already late, anyways." She chuckled to herself as she got to the bottom landing. 
 "What are you going to do, fire me from the family business?" Mitchell smiled to her mother, reaching her arm out for support. "And maybe I like having stairs. Keeps me thin," she said as she gently helped her mother to the door. 
 "You try having five kids and a hip replacement in a ten year period, then you will hate stairs," she replied as she patted Mitchell on the back. "Speaking of kids-"
 Mitchell put her hand up, signaling her disinterest in the conversation. "Not going to happen, mom. Kids aren't my thing. You have enough grand-kids anyways."
 "From everyone but my oldest," she replied, prodding her finger into Mitchell's chest, right over her heart. "At least give me a son-in-law and a puppy grandchild."
 They eased their way out of the door, and Mitchell shut it behind them, locking it quickly. "So what is Kingsly to you? Should I tell him you're not his grandma anymore, just some crazy lady named Sarah?" She gently guided her mother to the car, opening the passenger door for her.
 "You know I hate cats, Ell," Sarah replied as she buckled herself and shut the door, eyes following Mitchell as she walked around to the driver's side of the car. She reached over, to try and open the door for her, but she was a few inches too short.
 "Still a fur-baby grandchild," Mitchell replied as she got into the car and put her seat belt on. "He's an angel, and you know it. You'll learn to love him." She turned the key in the ignition, put the car in reverse, and backed out of the driveway.
 Sarah sighed, rolling her eyes as she turned to the window. Mitchell never understood her mom's hatred for cats, but it didn't bother her. Her home, her rules, so no matter anyone's feelings, she could do as she pleased and be herself. After five minutes of silence, Mitchell spoke up, "You know, I don't plan on staying at the store forever, right? I've been accepted where KayCee is."
 "Are you sure you want to work with a friend? I read online that it can cause strain in relationships working together, especially if you mess up and she is the one who put in a good word for you," Sarah replied, turning to face Mitchell. "Plus, this is our family's pride and joy! How could we have a family store without the whole family?"
 Mitchell huffed, clearly annoyed. "Easily, keep the ones who actually care there and just let me go. I won't mess up with KayCee, because it is something I actually want to do. It's literally what I went to school for."
 "You know it makes your dad happy having us all at the store," Sarah said sternly. "He put a lot of money and labor into getting all of the antiques, plus the work into restoring them. He works harder than anyone I know, and he supported us all these years, it's the least you could do."
 "He's not my dad. You know that, and I know that. Shit, even Adam and Luke know that. They were old enough to remember our dad," Mitchell retorted. She pulled into a small shopping center, parking her mom's car behind the building, angrily turning the key to the off position. "Martin is just the guy who tried to take my dad's place. After this week, I won't be working with you here."
 Mitchell let herself out of the car and walked to the back door of the store. In faded paint, you could barely see the "Very Valuable Vintage. No entry for customers" wording on the door. "Hopefully the last week I'll be in here, and my mom isn't right about KayCee," she thought to herself. A cold sensation trickled up from her hands to her body as she turned the doorknob. Something about this day felt different, but she still couldn't figure out what. She entered the building, kicking down the door stop to prop the door for her mother as she worked her way through the back storage room to the lobby. A young couple were slowly browsing the antique furniture section, and a tall, blonde man was flipping through the catalog of First Edition books they kept in the store room. Mitchell looked over at the register and found her youngest sister propped back playing on her phone. She quickly walked over to the counter and announced in her best customer service voice, "Good morning everyone, if you need any help with any items, just let me know. Feel free to grab me if you need me!" 
 The blonde man turned and smiled at her, politely pointing down to the catalog and raised his brows, asking for help without speaking. Mitchell slid through a small opening in the counter and hurried over to him. "Hello sir, I'm Ell, what can I help you with? Looking for a specific First Edition or collectible?" She looked into his green eyes and smiled. "What a pretty man," she thought to herself as she examined his facial features. Well over six foot tall, the man had very defined cheeks and jawline, long blonde hair to the middle of his back, and a snug, button up shirt leaving nothing to the imagination on how muscular he was. 
 His deep, but gentle voice filled the air as he spoke, "Yes, actually. I noticed you have a Bible from the fourth century listed in here. May I see it?" He turned the catalog to her, showing the antique Bible's photograph and description to her. Underneath, the asking price of eighty-thousand was listed.
 Mitchell took the catalog from his hands and smiled. "Of course, sir, but unfortunately we don't keep it here because of it's value. It's being held in a safety deposit box at the bank down the road, I am more than happy to take you to see it, mister..."
 "Lunaire," he replied. "Should we set up an appointment to see it so my investor can come as well? No reason to take two trips." Lunaire casually leaned against the wall as he pulled a phone from his front pocket and began to scroll through it. "It looks like we would be available later this afternoon, around two. Would that work for you Miss Ell?"
 Mitchell felt a slight rush in her cheeks, causing her to blush slightly. "Just Ell is fine, and yes, that would work perfectly. We can meet at two, just head south from here and the first complex on your right. I'll be right out front of the WellsFargo."
 Lunaire smiled and nodded to her and typed into his phone. He reached out and took her hand, shaking it gently, "Thank you, Ell. We will be there." He turned and walked out of the door, waving at her through the front window as he made his way to his truck. Mitchell smiled and thought to herself, "Hopefully an easy sale and a nice commission check! his hands were so soft..." as she fiddled with her hands. She turned and walked back to the counter, leaning over to her sister. "Lilly, let mom know I am showing the Bible in a few hours so I wont be staying long. I'll take over the register for now, though."
 Lilly looked up from her phone for the first time since Mitchell walked in the store and shrugged. "Cool. I'll be in the back then. Mom said we got a shipment of some old-ass comics we have to go through that Dad found online. Hopefully he didn't overpay and they don't look like shit. We lost about four-hundred the last time he bought some." She slowly stood up, taking her time to stretch out before grabbing her coffee cup and retreating the the storage room. Mitchell chuckled to herself as she remembered when Lilly broke the news to Martin that the comics were junk. He always insisted on doing the searching and purchases himself, as he had a self-proclaimed eye for top sellers.
 Sarah came out from the back room with a big grin on her face. "I hear you might be selling the Bible, is this true?" She hobbled her way to Mitchell and hugged her. "We might actually be well enough ahead for the first time in years after this! Your dad will be so pleased!"
 "Martin will be so pleased," Mitchell corrected her. "This will be my parting gift for leaving, but I still want my commission for it." She nodded her head, assuring herself that this could possibly be one of her biggest commission sales yet, and the perfect time to leave without disturbing the balance in the family. "So, I'll be leaving here in a few hours. If it sells I'll let you know."
 "Did he seem very interested, or just maybe?" Sarah asked, curious.
 Mitchell rubbed her temples and sat down in Lilly's register chair. "I guess. He's here for some kind of investor, so I'm sure he has a private collection or something." Her head started pounding, causing her to wince. She looked over at the couple, watching them shrug and walk out of the shop. Sales have been lower than normal, so she wasn't surprised they didn't make a purchase. Why buy something old when you can buy new vintage style furniture for half the price? "I've got a headache, so do you mind if I help sort and you deal with anyone that might come in today?"
 Sarah nodded her head, "Of course. You've got a more important sale to focus on, so do what you have to and make sure you're at the bank early. No bad impressions! It's taken twenty years for someone to actually want to see it."
 Mitchell stood up, slid past her mother, and worked her way back to the storage room. Once again, Lilly was mindlessly scrolling on her phone, completely ignoring the boxes of comics to be sorted. She chuckled to herself. "Lord help them if they think Lilly will actually do something for this store." Mitchell pulled one of the boxes over to a desk, sat down, and began to sort them. Carefully eyeing the dates and issue numbers, she stacked them into two piles: Sales and Donate. "Looks like Martin didn't suck so bad this time," She said as she carefully dangled a early copy of Captain America in front of her sister's face. "You should post this one on the website for full asking price only. It'll sell quick without hagglers trying to cut a deal."
 "Oh, wow! Not worth fifty cents like the other junk he brought in last month!" Lilly smiled as she took the comic from Mitchell. "Thanks for helping, Ell. I'm really not feeling it today. Think mom will let me go early? I have plans tonight..." her voice trailed off as she got a new alert on her phone. Lilly smiled, blushing as she quickly typed back to her mystery friend.
 Mitchell loved seeing her sister happy. As the youngest, she had the luxury of not remembering all the bad events from their childhoods, but at the same time she would never know the unconditional love of their father that had passed. Mitchell was always jealous of her spirit, Lilly was like a ray of sunshine compared to her. "I'm sure if the Bible sells we will all be out of here early. I hope this Lunaire guy is reliable. I wonder who his investor is," she said as she continued to sort through the comics.
 "If tonight doesn't go my way, I hope that Lunaire guy is single!" Lilly laughed. "He sure was a hottie."
 They both broke out in a chorus of cackling laughter. Mitchell wiped a tear from her eye, not sure if it was from laughing or because she was always alone, never interested in anyone for herself. "I think he may be a little too old for you, Lilly. He had to be like, thirty or something. You're barely legal. Plus he doesn't seem like the type to play step-daddy."

 Mitchell chuckled as she reached into the box for the last comic. "You know I'm not-" she cut her sentence short, focused on the cover of the comic. Death Angels. The cover had a man with long dark hair in a cloak, facial piercings, and skeletal fingers. It slowly burst into gray smoke and disappeared right before her eyes.
 Lilly looked over, oblivious to what had happened. "Whatcha find?" she asked, face scrunched in concern. "You look like you found a bug or something in there. That's happened to me before. It was still alive too!" She shuddered at the thought.
 "No..." Mitchell replied slowly. "I thought there was another book in here, but I guess my migraine is playing tricks on me."

Mitchell, the oldest of all her siblings, has never been much of a dreamer. That is, until she had a visitor in her dreams warning her of evil to come. The Mayans were wrong about 2012 or so we thought. When the world kept rotating humanity had a great laugh, made a few corny Hollywood hits and went on throughout their daily lives. 
However, there was always a sign telling humanity it was coming, we constantly fantasized about an apocalypse to the point that we no longer feared it. Some of the looneys actually welcomed the thought with open arms. Preppers bought their land and learned to make and store their own resources with the intent of holding out. Under or above ground, it didn't matter. There was no copy and paste survival plan, everyone had their own theories and only some of them were close to the truth.
Most of these people were either considered living in fear or crazy, of course they don't seem as crazy now with the world falling apart compared to those who were just the month before trying to out show their neighbor with expensive holiday decor. 
The elite were the worst of them all, they were the quiet believers. While channeling secret funds to their luxurious bunkers they even pushed the norm on the rest of the world so that they could be prepared for their escape but not startle the daily hustle and bustle that paid for it. 
Too bad for them, no one expected this, as if the asteroid was called from earth herself no man was safe. No amount of money nor skill could change their odds; there was a disease within us, a dormant one that resided in our genetics. 
While the world masked up and overused the hand sanitizer because of a virus that they thought was spreading like wildfire. We had no idea it was only the asteroid getting closer. Though mankind is a striving species to a fault, relying on science yet again, another miracle vaccine was created just in time for Christmas.  
The "ARK" vaccine, what it was called at the time, now the remaining world calls it the 40 vaccine. For irony purposes of course if you know the Christian story, it's terrible we know but shedding a small amount of dark humor goes a long way nowadays. If you're lucky it can even gain you a can of green beans, (I'm so sick of the green beans.) But it's also called this because it took at least forty hours after the asteroid passed for things to really start to change.
Then we found out that the ARK vaccine was not strong enough to fully withstand the effects of the asteroid. While millions who were un-vaccinated slowly lost their ability to breath and passed on, the vaccine did keep many more millions from fully reaching death's door. Usually this would be a good thing if it weren't 2021. The vaccine carried the undesirable genetic disease within so even if you didn't carry it before, you do now and you were affected by the asteroid. 
Turns out the side effects for those vaccinated was a less than appealing mutation, spastic high pitched screaming that almost only dogs could hear and a uncontrollable bite. Just bite though, we don't think they actually eat people but then I don't think anyone is sick enough to stand by and watch. 
But hey, at least they are not dead… Says no one.
Don't get me wrong, I mourn those who lost their lives after the first of January but in my own way. Because I have been too busy just trying to stay alive, imagine that in an apocalypse, there is no time to stop and smell the roses. 
You see, I'm from a small area and I didn't see the point in getting vaccinated when I almost never left my house. I had a nice one bedroom apartment where I worked and paid my bills from. I tested video games, wrote reviews, and slept all day for a living. It was great, I loved my life. I was a threat to no one in the spread of this virus even if I caught it, which I couldn't because I didn't carry it at all in my genetics but that's besides the point now. 
My friends however, they either vaccinated up or claimed to have already had the virus once so they were golden because they were not going to miss the biggest event to kick off the new year. Since all the comic-cons were cancelled throughout the year due to the virus, now that the vaccine was out, they were doing a large new year celebration. Bringing out all the big guns for all the gaming and cosplayers delights in one place, it was going to be like Christmas... I bet you already guessed where, yep New York and not too far from Times Square. 
 Needless to say, I was convinced by multiple friends to go along. They mostly tempted me with the presence of a beautiful girl. She was a fellow gamer/ reviewer who never showed her true identity. She promised she would partake in this room-share with the small group I was friends with online. I'll admit, it was easy to get me out of my nice small apartment for new years after I received a message from her questioning if I would go. 
I had quite the crush on her even though I knew nothing about her real life. I just couldn't get this girl out of my mind and it wasn't because I was shy with women in real life nor, in my opinion, unattractive. But I really liked this girl, we got along like old friends when we talked in the private discord group and I enjoyed when we played online together. We were really compatible on a team and I was anxious to meet her in person and my friends knew this. 
So I flew to New York, found out it was 8 players in a one room with not enough beds, oh it was a blast. Except comic-cons don't last only one night so once people began to get sick, the small room arrangement became the worst possible nightmare I could have ever imagined. 
Eight players rented a room and only- Wait I'm getting ahead of myself, so allow me to share my story from the first day when the earth began cleansing itself of mankind.

It's 2021, either the epigraphers were dyslexic or the inscriber was... Either way humanity wasn't prepared for what was to come after the asteroid slowly rotated around the earth for 24 hours. 

A young video game blogger (Matt Brown) finds himself in the middle of the most populated area of New York during the New Year's celebration. When a slow moving asteroid counts down the clock with the ball as it fly's over head. It leaves behind a trail of death and destruction. Matt must find a way back to get out of the city and stay alive.

Xue Xi flipped through the book.
Xiang Huai, who had prepared the breakfast, lazily sat on the chair and looked at her. He asked in a low voice, "Why?"
Xue Xi looked at him in surprise. "Are you reading real Buddhist scriptures?"
Xiang Huai leaned back and raised his sparkling eyes slightly. He chuckled and asked, "Little kid, what do you think I'm looking at?"
