I Let Out A Tired Sigh. I quickly remove all of my clothes, down the remaining coffee in the mug and jump into the shower. I wash the frustration out of my hair and calm my body for a while. Once I'm sure all the warm water is done for, I dry myself and put on some fresh and crispy pair of pyjamas and comfortable baggy t-shirt and jump onto the couch. I open my silver laptop and as if all the weight is back again.

I've been trying to prepare the cover for my new chapbook, "Sea Full Of Stars" for the past three days now. I'm not a visual artist and hiring one costs too much and I'm too broke to spend bills on softwares. It's never easy being a writer. Writing itself can be such a lonely process, although it is my first home. But then I have to design a cover that is not only catchy, mysterious and unique but also conversely uninhibited. Great. I spend hours trying to find the right website that'll let me make one for free.

For a minute there, I sit back tired and almost defeated. What if books didn't have covers, I think to myself. I could've saved all this hassle and been sleeping on my lonely bed in peace. I'd be "Netflix and Chilling" on my phone. I'd probably have been writing something new.

But what about all the books I've read? I confess that I've also once trusted the image more than the not-so-convincing texts. The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald with it's original art work is a stunning masterpiece. The eyes, the blue and the glam packed in it's dressing is an unbelievable turn on for any reader. But then again it wasn't designed by Fitzgerald himself. It was illustrated by Francis Cugat, a little known artist back then. It was the Gatsby that made me realise that it is an art to cover the book with a cape.

The same cannot be said for all the other books in my collection. Interpreter Of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri or Pablo Neruda's Love don't have the most convincing covers. I bought those books for the rave reviews I'd heard of them.

I do know that Rupi Kaur illustrated her own books. I get up and bring out all the poetry books that I own and try to fathom the making of their book art. The simplicity in Rupi's artwork is really appealing, but on the other hand Atticus's books look way too fancy. But the one thing they had in common is that their book covers were exactly what their book title said.

I too want my cover to reflect the idea and spirit of my book. But I don't know anyone who can design a book cover. Or who understands or reads my book or my art. I don't have my Francis Cugat.

I turn back to my computer, reducing it's brightness first because outside it's turning dark and I don't want to turn the light on just yet. I make a mental conversation with myself that if it doesn't work this time, I'll just use a template by Kindle Direct Publishing.

This time I go to YouTube and type 'how to make a paperback book cover for free' and hit Enter. The first video is of a middle-aged white man on the thumbnail, his hair slightly brown and a straight face. I click on it. The video starts demonstrating the process of making an easy to go book cover on this website called Canva.

I've used this app on my phone before but I never knew it could be used for making a paperback dress. I go to the site and follow all the instructions. I choose the image very mindfully, edit it, use the right fonts and change the colors. I do the same with the back cover and add a piece of poetry there. Then I keep following the instructions and after failing countless times, I make the perfect book cover for my latest collection.

I wipe the tears of joy slipping down my cheeks. I know I haven't made the best or make-you-pick-the-book-up kind of cover, but I'm happy.

I realise that I'm more happy because I could finally do something that fits the rules of the modern mass publishing world. I did something that will make people want to give me a look.

If it was upto me, I'd have the cover completely black or yellow and only bare my name and the name of the book. But that's not the case. I just smile with the fact that I made something that reflects the imagery or mood of my book. And I know that even with the exhausting role my cover will play, it won't ever gain the respect it deserves.

I go to bed hungry and drift off.

In these short stories, through personal episodes, the author talks about the complex idea of book covers being more commercial rather than artistic in the perspective of a reader as well as a writer.

When Hue was about to carry the girl, Uoron calmly and leisurely came out of the bushes.

Being reminded that there was somebody else in their midst he took a deep breath and exhaled trying to calm himself. Finally suppressing his earlier feelings, he turned to looked at Uoron.

"Uoron, please carry her things and helped me bring it back. Our house is just below this hill."

He started walking towards the other direction of the red leafed tree even before Uoron could reply. He was carrying the fainted girl in his arms in a princess style. 

Honestly speaking, he didn't care if the stuff was brought back now or not as he can just retrieve it later but remembering that wild animals like foxes sometimes appear here that could destroy her things he asked Uoron instead as his hands were full in carrying Reen alone.

He didn't even he turn back once to see if Uoron was following him or not and just continued walking.

Uoron stared at his retreating back not minding being bossed around. It was a good thing he found out the man's identity before doing anything that he would greatly regret in the end. If it was any other person, he would be battered black and blue [1] by now.

It was not that he was afraid of Hue but he didn't want to risk the relationship that they could form in the future. As he was also trying to relieve his boredom he thus picked up her things such as her glasses, recorder, water bottle and book deciding to just go with the flow for now.

While thinking this way, his eye caught the attractive design on the book. The book was covered in a red sheet with a single puzzle piece symbol in the middle of its cover. There was nothing written on the spine of the book. The book seems to have a lock mechanism upon his assessment but currently it seems to be unlocked. 

"This design... hmmm... " he whispered

He was sure of this description since the sky completely cleared up and the moon was surprisingly bright that night. It was as though the earlier rain specifically showered the scenario.

He wanted to return her things before they truly get out of his site however curiosity ruled over logic, he sat down on the tree root she was previously sitting. He flips the cover and started reading. Only one paragraph was written with a beautiful handwriting.

"For curious seekers reading this book
Turn the next page and take a look
However, a warning I must give
Be cautious and prepare to receive 
The secrets that lies within each word
That will now be unfurled.

After experience a broken heart and a series of unfortunate events, Reen had remembered everything.  While all this were happening, he came into her life.  Should she forgive and forget everything and live the life she always wanted or should she stay and fulfill her need to be free from her past’s dark constraints? 

Need or want which should she choose...?

He was in disbelief. 
The head of the department laughed at his reaction. "Snap out of it, Aihara. You look like I've just fired you."
"I'm sorry, sir!" Kaoru regained his composure. "I didn't expect this. Thank you very much."
The older man sitting opposite him in the meeting room just smiled kindly. "It's a great achievement for someone at your level. Hakusen should have hired you when they could."
Kaoru stared at the mock-up of the cover of the book with his design. It was for an up and coming novelist, who wanted a cover expressing separation.
A senior designer had overseen the project and Kaoru was staffed on the team. They spent weeks trying to meet the novelist's demands, on top of other assignments.
It came to a breaking point when his senior threw in the towel.
"I give up! He's just being fucking unreasonable. What's wrong with our ideas? Screw this."
Kaoru had been helping to polish his senior's work up until then. When the team went home dejectedly that day, he stayed back and thought about what the novelist wanted.
They had been fixated on a darker, wintry look. It made sense since the novel was equally dark and tragic.
To Kaoru, separation was on a warm autumn day, when leaves fell together with the hearts that followed. The memories which kept resurfacing during the entire project. 
He sketched out an idea and showed it to his senior the next day.
His senior was going to throw it into the bin when one of the team leads of the production department passed by and noticed it.
"Hey, let me look at that."
Kaoru had seen him before during meetings. Confident, effective and with a personality which  engaged with others easily, Fujiwara Ren was one of the rising stars in the company.
His senior handed over the sketch grudgingly. Fujiwara's hazel eyes scanned it and then asked Kaoru, "Is this your work?"
"Yes," Kaoru admitted.
A warm smile crossed Fujiwara's face. "I'll ask his editor to show it to him."
Both his senior and Kaoru had been shocked. 
That was three days ago. Now, he was sitting in the office looking down at his first book cover. Kaoru couldn't believe it.
He was on cloud nine for the rest of the day. His co-workers who have heard congratulated him heartily, except for the senior designer who muttered something to the effect of him lucking out.
Kaoru didn't mind if it was luck. It gave him a tiny confidence boost. 
Even if his inspiration was…
Don't think about it at work, he told himself. When he went home, then he could try to piece his heart together, as he often did ever since that day.
He tried to look for Fujiwara to thank him but the man was out for meetings. He did manage to speak to Miss Tachibana over the phone to convey the good news to her. 
When he left the office, he finally saw Fujiwara at the lobby.
Kaoru waved to get his attention.
Fujiwara looked up from his phone and grinned. "Aihara!"
Kaoru went over quickly and bowed. "Thank you so much. For the cover."
"It's your design," Fujiwara reminded him in a friendly manner. "Thank YOU. If not, the project would have been delayed and I'm probably still in the office."
Kaoru was embarrassed. "No, I..it was just an idea which came to me."
"Don't be so modest," Fujiwara chuckled. "You're such a cute junior!"
"Who's cute?" a deeper voice asked, amused.
A taller and very good-looking man appeared beside Fujiwara. In a suit and still carrying a briefcase.
"Shin! You're on time," Fujiwara exclaimed happily. "Meet Aihara Kaoru. From the design department."
Then to Kaoru, he introduced the man easily, "This is Kurosawa Shinobu. My partner."
Kaoru was surprised. 
"Nice to meet you," he said.
"And you," the man returned and added wryly. "Ren isn't giving you trouble, is he?"
"Of course not!" Fujiwara protested with a pout. "I'm the perfect senior."
"He's very kind to me," Kaoru agreed. "I got my first book cover because of him."
"He's just being unnecessarily humble," Fujiwara countered and told his partner, "My project is back on track. He's the reason you can take me out to dinner today."
"In that case, you have my thanks too," Kurosawa told Kaoru.
They made a dangerously attractive couple. It was clear that they were in love. Kaoru could see the adoring laughter in Fujiwara's eyes and although his partner seemed to be the more reserved type, the glances he gave Fujiwara contained a certain softness.
"Not at all! Anyway, I shouldn't take up more of your time." Kaoru smiled. "Have a good evening."
"Bye! See you around in the office!" Fujiwara waved cheerfully.
He could still make out bits and pieces of their conversation as he walked away.
"Just dinner? I haven't seen you for a week."
"What else?"
"Shin, don't tease me. Unless you don't want to..."
"Fine. A quick dinner."
"Now we're talking."
It didn't take much imagination to know what they could be referring to. Kaoru found himself smiling at how comfortable they seemed with each other.
When he got into the packed train, he finally let his mind wander. 
What was Keigo doing right now? Was he still in the office or traveling for work? Did he find someone who could make him happy?
Somehow, seeing Fujiwara and his partner together made him missed Keigo so intensely. What wouldn't he give to have just one dinner, free of any consequences and repercussions?
Kaoru knew back then that it would crush his heart. 
He hadn't expected that it could possibly be irreparable. Unlike the defect from his childhood, this could not be healed by any surgery or medication.
The human heart, once scarred, was never quite the same.

"You need money. I want company. It’s a fair trade.” That was the start of the relationship between Wada Keigo and Aihara Kaoru. How far will they go?

 "Isn't it weird that we have one hand that knows how to do everything, and then one hand that                                  just sits there like "I don't know how to hold a pencil."

Rosemary sat in her room and attentively dropped a few drops of olive oil on an old leather book. The droplets gleamed on top of the book, shining proudly. With one hand on the book, she reached into her pocket and took out a silk handkerchief with a strange design on it, and delicately wiped the drops of the olive oil around the cover. She sat there, staring at the ancient book in her hands, admiring the glossy leather cover. All of a sudden, her right hand began to shake. The book began to quiver, and the shaking turned into violent jerking. The book fell to the ground and Rosemary held onto her hand, silently begging for it to stop. Her hand gave one more violent jerk and went still. Rosemary sighed and bent down to pick up the book. The book lay on its spine, showing a blank page with a small pouch. Out of curiosity, Rosemary carefully opened the pouch and pieces of paper began to pour out. A pale blue sheet caught her eye and she picked it up. On the page was the neatest writing Rosemary had ever seen. She inspected the page. On it, there was a number; 684, and a message. She read the message aloud;
                                             
                                             Open your eyes, your heart, your mind
                                                        To a land across the sea
                              Where creatures are poisoned and creatures are dying
                                                   And no one can ever be free


                                With power far greater than one should possess
                                        A rising evil shall be put to the test

                                    
                                     Elements shall come together as one
                            And protect the future for generations to come

Chapter 48: Author’s Note
Hello, darling reader,
I just wanted to take a second and thank you for reading this book. And if you are one of the few lovely people who review, know you are the lifeblood of any successful author’s career.
If you read P&P and immediately thought, “Imogene, I swear I’ve read a book by you before. Your style feels very familiar, and these characters remind me of x, y, and z.” Well, you very well may have encountered my distinct style and unique characters before.
This is far from my first rodeo and not even close to my first M/M romance novel. So, if you connect the dots, and they lead you back to where Imogene began, I won’t ever deny that she is me and I am her. You can come and find me, I’m not scared. :p
Besides, a little cloak and dagger is fun, especially for a full-time writer.
What this has been is the first (of hopefully many) books written as Imogene. This is a genre and type of storytelling I LOVE (to both read and write), and I most definitely want to spend some more time here. I’ve been dying to dig into some lighthearted and fun romance for a long time, and I felt like this series was the perfect setting and group of friends to do that with.
Imogene is my secret identity, my Clark Kent. She’s the skin I get to slip into to write whatever the hell I want with zero expectations, and with no preconceived notions. Imogene doesn’t have any of the rules my other pseudonym has, and I can’t begin to tell you how liberating that is. Imogene flies or falls on her own merit, so there is less pressure on me to create something expected. Imogene is all about flirty, fun, and slightly ridiculous stories that will always come with a guaranteed HEA. I don’t know if I could get away with that in my other books.
If all of this seems ridiculous, and if you couldn’t care less about a pseudonym and where I was before I was here, high-five. I can totally get behind a reader who is here for the story and nothing else.
All of that said, the name may be made up, but the people behind this book are very real.
I wouldn’t have had the time or the motivation to get P&P written if it wasn’t for my wonderful assistant. Her support and encouragement when I told her I wanted to write something like a LGBTQ Gossip Girl was everything. She is often the only shining light in the murky waters of publishing.

The moment Wang Baole spoke, all the live stream viewers from the Federation were taken aback. That was because, at that moment, the base that Wang Baole had constructed in the form of a gigantic block suddenly underwent a shocking transformation.
The block seemed to have been cut horizontally into layers. However, taking a closer look, perhaps it was already constructed layer by layer, just that it wasn't the focus of people's attention; its overall appearance making one think that it was a solid block.
With the appearance of the layers, it could be seen that the top-most layer was like a cover that was being lifted backwards. Looking at it from afar, the block seemed to have become a book, and the layer that was lifted was its cover.
This was the essence of Wang Baole's design, the unique feature of the Eternal Fortress!
What he had constructed was indeed a book!
With the cover of the book lifted, the first page was revealed. At that instant, everyone from the Federation who was watching the live stream realized, surprisingly, that it wasn't words that had appeared on the first page, but rather rows of Baole Cannons!
At one glance, the first page of the zone's stronghold, which was in the form of a book, was covered densely by a thousand Baole Cannons. Right now, as they all came into view at once, a shockingly loud boom was produced!
As the noise reverberated, light rays instantly appeared above Wang Baole, as if they were occupying the sky, towards the incoming Beast Tide that was roaring as they approached.
The frightening loud boom instantly shook the heavens and earth, and as the Baole Cannons fired all at once, the ground appeared to be on the brink of cracking apart. The cries of the countless ferocious beasts were instantly drowned out as their bodies were visibly pierced and broken apart. As their flesh and blood splattered in all directions, an invisible big hand seemed to have descended from the skies, crushing everything and destroying them!
The loud noise frightened the other candidates in the other zones most, resulting in a sense of fear gripping them just as they were in the process of resisting the Beast Tide. They couldn't help but look towards Wang Baole.
Even before they could react, the Baole Cannons fired in unison for the second and third time!
The noise was even louder, the power even stronger, and the level of lethality was increased significantly. Whatever was happening made everyone from the Federation who was watching the live stream hold their breaths, as the force by which Wang Baole's stronghold had erupted was beyond their wildest imagination. 
However, the military, as well as those who were familiar with the Baole Cannon, knew that even though the force of the collective firing was large, and could, to a certain extent, last longer than the Fire God Cannons, it was nowhere near being limitless.
Resources were secondary. What was more important was that every time the Baole Cannons were fired, damage would occur. Therefore, other than having to prepare more Baole Cannons, more maintenance specialists had to be hired as well.
Even though they saw the thousand puppets from Wang Baole, they still felt that it was a challenging task. Li Yi and Kong Dao quickly calmed down from their shock, having reached the same conclusion.
He's just acting tough and won't last! Li Yi sneered, seeing that after the sixth firing, the Baole Cannons were already glowing red. She laughed, and was about to watch Wang Baole make a fool of himself, but at that moment…
Wang Baole, who was standing just beside his stronghold, revealed a glow in his eyes. He knew that whether his Eternal Fortress had been appropriately named would depend on his following decisions, and on whether the processes of construction and continual perfection would succeed!
It has been proven theoretically many times… Now, it's time to see whether it actually works!
Wang Baole took a deep breath, and raised his right hand seals, pointing towards the stronghold as he fully activated the stronghold so that it was up and running!
"Turn the pages!"
The moment he spoke, the seals were activated. Instantly, the book-like stronghold vibrated, and the first page of it, which was filled with a thousand Baole Cannons, was swiftly lifted as if it was really a page of a book. After turning over, it landed, revealing the second page!
On the second page, another thousand Baole Cannons were revealed. They fired in unison again, creating a loud bang that continued to shock the heavens and earth. Soon, the second page was lifted, revealing the third, fourth, and fifth page…
Every page until the eleventh page was filled with a thousand Baole Cannons. Every time the cannons appeared, they fired in unison, in an astonishing force that covered a large area!
Immediately, a huge contrast was seen between Wang Baole and the other resisting candidates on the battleground. It was clear that even if the other candidates fired in unison, they still needed to pause and recuperate. However, for Wang Baole, from the beginning until now, he had already fired the cannons in unison over seventy times, but still showed no signs of stopping. He even gave people the impression that he could fire the cannons continuously!
That was especially so as the Beast Tide in front of Wang Baole was on the brink of collapse. In their horror and fear, the ferocious beasts dared not near the area around Wang Baole's zone, and could only dash towards other areas. That compounded the pressure on the other candidates, as if applying salt on a wound.
The contrast and the deafening sound produced from the unison firing instantly shocked the people from the Federation. Gasps of shock could be heard coming continuously from the households, and even the military was taken aback. The Governor from Martian Colony was also surprised.
"Every page is filled with thousands of Baole Cannons. This is already the eleventh page. How could he possess so many Baole Cannons… That's over ten thousand of them!" Even though he was the creator of the Baole Cannon, it still requires an unimaginable amount of resources to construct them… That was definitely out of reach for a mere Foundation Establishment realm cultivator!
"Something's not right… Look, of the Baole Cannons that appeared in the later pages, many of them have been used before… I remember one of them was damaged on the exterior cover, and it appeared again on the third page!"
"I understand now… There aren't ten thousand Baole Cannons. In reality, there could only be just over two thousand of them. They were all made and reconstructed from whatever Wang Baole ravaged from the other candidates! The real mystery lay in the stronghold!"
"Every time a page is flipped, a process of repair and reconstruction occurs. His stronghold must definitely harness a formidable ability to restore the Baole Cannons, such that it's instant, allowing the Baole Cannons to reappear with every page that's flipped so that they can be continuously reused…"
