The ruler was no more than fifteen centimetres in length and six in width, but wisps of white fog were coiling up around its surface, making it look extremely mysterious.

“The... the Legendary Ice Ruler! Isn’t that the ultimate weapon of your Tian Yin Sect? You’re a lunatic for stealing such a sacred weapon for the sake of a dead woman! Aren’t you afraid of the seniors of your sect? They’ll render you incapable of practicing martial arts once they find out!” the Daoist priest managed to stammer his weak threat. He had prepared to put up a desperate fight, but his expression froze at the sight of the ruler.

In a flash, the Daoist priest unexpectedly flung the little animal at the girl. He stomped his foot hard on the ground, and shot backwards into mid-air. He then finally vanished into the dark woods, resembling a giant bird.

“Witch, I’ll make your theft of the Legendary Ice Ruler public. Let’s see what your sect will do to you,” the vile oath came from the woods. The last few words of the oath were faintly heard as the priest fled deep into the forest. It was obvious that he had already gone far away.

“Well, I was wondering why Cold Sword would grab a golden hamster without any kind of hesitation. It is a hamster with holy pupils, which will soon become a holy animal!” said the barefoot girl, withdrawing her jade ruler. She held the golden animal affectionately to her breast, stroking it tenderly.
The tiny green eyes of the mouse like golden animal trembled the whole time, but it didn’t dare to move its body as it was stroked by the ten slender fingers.

“Oh yes, there’s another little guy.”
After fussing over the golden hamster for a while, the barefoot girl suddenly found Shi Mu standing nearby.

Shi Mu blushed deeply at the question, his whole face turning red. A sudden strength strangely began to grow inside him, enabling him to slowly rise from the ground. He then studied the extremely beautiful face, looking weirder than he could have ever imagined.

Cracks appeared in it as it was slowly cut apart. Blood flowed from Kong Yao's mouth and his face was pale, but he still stepped forward, each step increasing his power. He would fight with his life just to stop the barefoot girl for a while. The nine cultivators did not need long to kill Ye Futian. He only needed to buy them a little time.
The terrible storm caused the barefoot girl's ponytail to sway in the wind. Even stronger sword wills burst forth as she continued forward. Kong Yao spat out a mouthful of blood, but his whole body seemed to be burning. This was the end. He had no way to retreat. If Ye Futian did not die, then he would.
Boom!
Kong Yao took a great step forward, and the divine elephant did as well, slamming its foot down on the barefoot girl. But it seemed like her frail body was not affected. In her eyes, a sword of blood pierced through Kong Yao's spiritual willpower.
At that moment many scenes flashed through Kong Yao's mind. He remembered the first time he had set foot upon the soil of the Barren State. How arrogant he had been as he brought Qin Zhong to the Holy Zhi Palace. The Palace Lord Liu Chan had welcomed them, and yet he had ignored it all, believing in his heart of hearts that the Holy Zhi Palace was not worthy of his attention. He had attacked Crouching Dragon Mountain and surrounded Ye Futian, but had been blocked time and time again until Emperor Xia appeared. But even then he had thought that he would destroy the palace sooner or later. Did they think that delaying the Battle of Proving Holiness would change anything?
In that battle, he would slaughter the top powers of the Holy Zhi Palace. However, he had never thought that before the Battle of Proving Holiness came the Barren State would rise to prominence, and the Zhisheng Cliffs had been subjected to slaughter. Now even seven great holy lands joining together to overwhelm the Holy Zhi Palace had become mired in a terrible situation. He had never thought that the next time he fought on the soil of the Barren State would be the last battle of his life. And the one who killed him would be a young girl with a ponytail.
Elsewhere, another fierce battle was raging. Yu Sheng seemed to have turned into a demon. As he moved forward a destructive dark airflow raged between heaven and earth, consuming all the power there. Below him were the countless corpses of cultivators from the Endless Sea. Before him was a huge battle matrix. It transformed into a huge black dragon that sprouted two gigantic wings, blocking his path.
His body was covered in blood. Heaven and earth shook with every step that he took. Everyone in the dragon battle array felt their hearts tremble. A terrible dark halberd shot out, but the dragon swung its tail, shattering it.
Boom! Yu Sheng took another step forward, and his demon body transformed again. It grew bigger and bigger and was about to turn into a true demon. The dragon roared and swept out its wings. Every scale on its wings turned into an extremely sharp dark blade, and they all slashed out towards Yu Sheng. But he seemed not to see them as he stepped forward once again.
Boom! Demonic power filled the sky as he sucked in all the energy around him. His demonic form changed once again. His aura grew stronger and rippled out in powerful waves. With one step he had reached the Sage level.
He watched the dark wings slashing towards him and stretched out his hands, grabbing them. He roared and began to tear them apart, causing everyone in the battle matrix to scream in pain.
Boom! Yu Sheng seemed to feel nothing as he continued forward. The cultivators in the dark dragon battle matrix felt their hearts tremble with fear as they watched his still changing demonic form. They wanted to kneel before him and worship him. They saw him reach out with Battleaxe of Judgement, which suddenly demonized. It grew darker and darker and an astonishing power stretched out from within. All the cultivators in the battle matrix shook. Time seemed to stop.
Ye Futian held the Halberd of Time and Space as the nine cultivators pointed divine implements at him. A giant net descended on him from the sky. But he seemed not to see them. He stepped into the air with golden lightning bursting from his brow, turning into a destructive spirit elemental storm. It collided with the encirclement, and he managed to break through the net. Blood stained his clothes, but he seemed to feel nothing as he rushed towards the nine people in the sky. Hua Jieyu followed behind him, her mental storm becoming a destructive power that rushed towards the nine cultivators.
Freeze time and space, thought Ye Futian. The nine cultivators felt the area around them enter a static state, and in the next instant, Ye Futian appeared in front of them, thrusting the Halberd of Time and Space at one of them without hesitation.
"Kill!" His murderous intent filled the skies as the halberd shot forward. The cultivator tried to flee but found that he could not control his body. Even though his will was under serious attack, he still thrust his sword forward and it flew out of his hand towards Ye Futian.
The divine implement's speed seemed to slow as it collided with the Halberd of Time and Space. It was shocked backward. The cultivator screamed as his chest was pierced, and he instantly burst into pieces.
"Kill!" Seeming to have been infected by Ye Futian's shout, Yaya stepped forward as well. With that step, the divine elephant's body cracked open as it was pierced. Kong Yao's spiritual will was also pierced by the sword of blood. Although he had already foreseen this ending, he still issued an angry roar. Kong Yao, number nine on the Sage Ranking, would really die like this?
The divine sword pierced through and the divine elephant burst apart. The sword continued into Kong Yao's body, making him break apart as well, finally turning into nothing more than dust. Kong Yao, number nine on the Sage Ranking, had died in battle.
The barefoot girl continued forward. There was no one to stop her. There was a scream from the other side of the battlefield as Yu Sheng's Battleaxe of Judgment fell. The cultivators in the battle matrix watched it fall helplessly. It cut through the black dragon from head to tail, and blood fell like rain as the cultivators within the matrix were cut open.
Countless cultivators were lost in an instant.
The dragon had been slain by the Battleaxe of Judgment. Yu Sheng stepped past it towards where Ye Futian was fighting!

Fifteen years later, a young man by the name of Ye Futian begins his journey in search for his true identity. The legend of Futian was going to be one for the history books.

I calmly walked to the edge of the cliff looking out at the vast ocean. I smiled as I heard a voice of a girl in my mind.
"One day, I'd walk barefoot in the beach!"
The voice was shaky but enthusiastic. She was like singing as she said those words. I lowered my eyes and looked on as the waves crashed against the cliff face.
"No, you can't walk barefoot here." I answered absent-mindedly.
"Erik?" a voice of a man pulled me out of my thoughts and I turned to him. "We're ready to shoot." He said again as I nodded and walked towards the set.

She was a girl with a talents able to awe everyone that heard her. But she is confined and cannot leave.

"Morpheous!" 


He heard her utter his name with mixed emotions on her face. She looked relieved yet agitated at the same time.


"Yes Dr. Rosie! It's me. What happened? Why are you wandering alone and …" he glanced down at her bare feet, "Where are your shoes? Is anyone chasing you? Why do you look so scared?"


"I… I need to go to Seattle High right now. Can you take me there?"


"Yes I will take you," And raising his hand he hailed for a cab. She was shivering like a wet cat, but he had no jacket to offer her. He was curious how she had ended up on the road like this but from the look on her face, he had understood that she preferred silence.


Every now and then, she turned around, as if she was looking for someone.


"There is no one here Dr. Rosie. You are safe."


"Yes you are right! There is no one here. No one!" And all of a sudden her voice became gloomy and her face bore a look of melancholy. The sadness in her eyes troubled him because she was a jolly person, full of life, yet she was sitting in the car as if her entire world had come crashing down.


"Is any dear one of yours admitted at the hospital?"


She just shook her head and kept looking outside.


As soon as they reached the hospital, Morpheous immediately took her to his dorm. But throughout her way through the hospital corridors she kept scanning the entire place.


"You will be safe here. There are security cameras and guards everywhere. If you want I can watch out for you tonight."


"What I am supposed to do here?" She asked entering his dorm.


"This is my dorm room. You can sleep here for tonight. Or do you want to go to your chamber?"


"I am ok here." She replied and looked at the other side of the room. 


"Another resident stays here but he is on duty. He will come back tomorrow morning. So you can freshen up and lock the room from inside before sleeping."


"Where are you going?" She asked narrowing her eyes.


"I will be in the ER just in case anyone needs some help." He said and picked up his diary and stretched the sheets tightly on the bed.


"Where is ER?"


"Excuse me?" Exclaimed a startled Morpheous, for this wasn't something Dr. Rosie should be asking. He wondered if she was having memory loss, but then she remembered his name so it wasn't a possible scenario. He had no idea what was traumatizing her.


"Dr. Rosie do you want me to call anyone from your home? Shall I drop you at your home if you aren't feeling safe here? You sound very disturbed. I don't think you should stay alone. Should I call your parents?"


But without saying anything she sat on the bed.


Her lips parted for a moment to say something, but he could see that she was hesitating. So he gave her some time to gather her thoughts and finally after a couple of minutes, she looked up at him and asked, "I would need sometime alone."


"Sure! Take rest. I will wake you up tomorrow morning," he said and walked out, closing the door behind him. 


His mind was filled with questions as he walked towards the ER, but then stopped midway and walked towards the trauma center. He wanted to know if she had any family members or friends whom he could call and make them aware of the situation even though it looked like she didn't approve of it.


Walking inside he found Dr. Gavin flipping through the chart of a patient. He wondered what he was doing there because he had seen the emergency duty chart, and he had not been assigned in any of the wards. He was so immersed in reading the chart that he didn't even notice him walking towards him.


"Dr. Gavin!"


'Thud'


Startled he dropped the patient's chart from his hand. "Morpheous… Why … Why are you here?"


"I just came here to get the contact details of Dr. Rosie. Can you send any duty nurse?" Morpheous requested.


"Yes… Yeah… I mean Ya," And saying that he picked up the fallen chart and placed it back on the bed. 


"Are you ok Dr. Gavin?" Morpheous wondered why he looked so flustered. "And why are you here? You were not allotted any duty today."


"Yeah… I am fine. What will happen to me? And I didn't come here on my will. Dr. Caroline had asked me to work here for a few hours and monitor the progress of the patients. Anyways I will call the nurse for you," and Morpheous watched him walk a couple of steps, and then he returned and picked up his weird neon yellow gym bag along with him.


Morpheous looked at the bag with suspicion. 'What was so valuable in the bag that he couldn't leave it for a minute?' But most importantly why Caroline had asked him to monitor the trauma wing instead of cardio? He wondered for a brief moment until he saw Dr. Gavin returning along with a nurse.


"How can I help you?" The nurse asked.


"Erm… Do you have any contact details of Dr. Rosie's family members?"


"Why what happened to her? Is she all right?" The nurse panicked.


"She is all right. She is resting right now in the hospital, kind of tired and overworked you know. So I just thought if I could call someone to pick her up."


"Well first, she stays alone here and second of all she had taken half day leave and had gone home. Why is she sleeping here? Where is she now?"


" She is resting in the dorm."


"Dorms?" The nurse exclaimed. "Not possible! She is a clean freak. She would never lie down anywhere except for her chamber and that too on her own sheets. I have been working with her for the last seven years. But who are you by the way? Why did she reach you instead of me?"


And that made Morpheous wonder because it didn't seem like she minded his sheets or walking barefoot. So definitely something must have gone terrible wrong with her. 


"Hello!" The nurse pulled him from his thoughts.


"I… I work as an assistant to Dr. Caroline."


"Oh so you are the hot guy! No wonder the cardio wing was chirping about you." She commented but ignoring her words Morpheous asked," Do you have spare shoes for her? Even surgery shoes will be fine."


The nurse nodded and brought back a pair of Crocs. "Why do you need shoes for her? Can you tell me what is going on? You are sort of freaking me out."


"I found her barefoot. Not sure why though. She is resting now, so maybe it's better if you ask tomorrow."


"Barefoot?" The nurse exclaimed. "Not possible. Didn't I tell you she was borderline OCD? She will never step out barefoot. Where did you find her walking barefoot?"


And before Morpheous could even think what was going wrong, or frame an answer for the nurse, Dr. Gavin almost snatched the shoes from her hand and said,


"I will take the shoes for her. Tell me the dorm number."

[Warning : MATURE CONTENT]

"Don't look at me like that Morpheous! Please!"
Her quivering lips begged, but her ignited breath flamed nothing but sinful desires in him.
"Ask me anything tonight Caroline, but don't ask me to stay away from you." Echoed his raspy voice as he cupped her chin tenderly. 
His smoldering amber eyes were fixated on her lips, aching to touch her softness for just a fleeting second. But the moment he leaned closer, something got etched on the wall next to her in a hue of yellow and vermilion.
His jaws clenched and taking a step back, he cursed.
"You!"
"You need to stay away from me!"

And she saw his amber eyes burn with a flicker of blue!

 The train, at last, arrived at the Temple City station, and the passengers got off. Lucy, Sam, and Sandy descended together, carrying their bags. 

“Now then, where should we go?” Sandy curiously looked around, a little confused in such a big station and crowded people. 

“My cousin said she’d meet us here on the platform,” Lucy was confused too, as she couldn’t see her cousin anywhere in the large crowd. 

“Lulu, darling, you’ve arrived!” 

 She glanced aside and let out a cry as a tall and slender twenty-five-year-old woman dashed at her and clutched her in her hugs. Sam and Sandy watched her stupefiedly – she was beautiful, with long brown hair and brown sweet-looking eyes, dressed in a thin white dress and barefoot (no matter how weird it seemed to be walking barefoot outside in the streets). At first, Sandy even thought that perceiving the at-one-glance kind-hearted girl’s unusually dark aura, she had to be some kind of a spirit similar to her, and that was the very reason for her being barefoot. However, she quickly discarded this strange thought as she already knew the girl was Lucy’s cousin, thus a human, and there was no way a human could be a spirit, so her being barefoot was probably purely out of her preferable style. Another weird thing was that even though she looked so young, this girl talked more like an elderly woman, perceiving Lucy more like a child despite the difference of their age was only ten years, not more. Lucy still rejoiced, seeing her elder cousin, and hugged her back: 

“Hello, Lily! It is so good to see you!” 

“Aww, I missed you so much, little sis!” Lily clapped hands with joy. Then she looked at her two friends: “Are these your family you talked about?” 

“Yes. This is my little sis, Samantha, but we all call her Sam, and this is our mommy squirrel, Sandra Nutts, but we call her Sandy”. 

“It is nice to meet you, Ms. Lily Black,” Sandy shook her hand with a courteous smile. 

“Hehe, please drop the formalities, Mrs. Nutts! Just call me Lily. It is a pleasure for me to meet you too. Thank you so much for taking care of Lucy for all these years! We all are truly grateful!” she pressed hands to her chest. “My family was really worried when she refused to join us and instead went to a children’s house, so, as I finally got a hold of my independent adult life, I hurried here to Temple City to settle things together with my husband and take care of Lucy as well. I’m so glad you all came here!” 

“Thanks for the warm welcome, Lily! You can call me Sandy, too,” the squirrel spirit smiled back, relieved that Lucy’s cousin turned out to be such an honest and kind-hearted young woman. She, as a spirit, had a hard time believing in humans’ kindness. 

“And you must be Samantha, right?” Lily smilingly stretched a hand out to blushing Sam who had clutched her mommy squirrel’s dress. “You can officially call me big sis Lily!” 

 Sam brightened – Lucy’s cousin was such a warm-hearted girl! She was totally different from when she first met Lucy – she stayed cold and collected, while this girl had burst out all her warmth all at once. 

“It’s nice to meet you, big sis Lily! You can call me Sam!” she grinned at her and eagerly shook her hand. 

“Now then, let’s get back to our RV,” Lily smiled, “We’ll drive you to Lucy’s high school soon”. 

“Okay!” 

 Thus, Lily took some of their luggage and they headed out of the station. There in the street was standing a dazzling black RV with blue and purple fire depictions. Sam, Sandy, and Lucy gasped when caught a glimpse of it: 

“Wow...” 

“You like it? That’s our home, and from now on, your one too!” 

“Awesome!” Sam jumped with joy. Sandy too smiled happily, seeing her hostess so overjoyed. 

 Once they walked up to the RV, Lily first knocked on the door, and then opened it, crying in: 

“We’re back!” 

 A young, eighteen-year-old boy appeared at the stairs, looking down at them with his stern, but welcoming gaze. He had long black hair tied in a lower braid, and brown eyes. His right eye was covered with a black patch. He wore a brown coat, white shirt, black trousers, and was barefoot like Lily. Just as she looked at him, Sandy felt an overly discomforting dark aura emerge from the guy, even though he had such a welcoming smile. 

“Welcome back, mother,” he quietly referred to Lily, and then looked at the three guests: “Welcome, you guys”. 

“Mother?! But she’s roughly twenty-six!” Lucy exclaimed with stupor, “You’re like eighteen! What the heck?” 

 Both Lily and the boy laughed. Lily smilingly explained: 

“My previous incarnation was his mother. He is my soul son”. 

“Let me help you,” the boy grabbed the girls’ luggage altogether and took them into the RV. The astonished girls and Lily followed, and this latter closed the door behind. 

 The RV interior was luxurious and well-decorated, but instead of appreciating its beauty, the girls were now dumbfoundedly staring at the strange boy and Lily. 

“How come a human has a soul son? I thought only spirits, angels, and demons could have such children...” Sandy blinked. 

“Mom was the wife of an infernal angel, so I was born a demon. There’s nothing surprising, actually,” the boy shrugged. 

“Yes. I just regained my past life memories so I identify myself as both Incubus’ mother, Lilith, and my current self, Lily”. 

“You mean, your past incarnation was the first woman of the world?!” Lucy widened eyes, “I never knew that!” 

“And you are Incubus, the demon prince of nightmares?!” Sandy was no less astonished. “No wonder I felt such dark aura come from both of you!” 

“Yes. He is indeed the prince of the underworld, Incubus,” Lily proudly smiled as if ‘the prince of the underworld’ were not abhorring but a respectable title. “But here in the East, you might more know him as Prince Baku[1]”. 

“Ah, Baku, the demon of nightmares?” Sam hid behind her mommy squirrel’s leg. 

 Incubus chuckled: 

“Don’t be scared, I won’t disturb your dreams. You are my mother’s friends. I would never dare defy my parents”. 

“Whew...” Sam wiped the sweat from her forehead, getting relieved. Lily and Incubus laughed at her gesture. 

“So, if you are indeed Lilith and a soul mother to Incubus, that means you are a demon too, sis?” Lucy widened eyes. 

“Yes. I am a demon soul in a human body,” Lily grinned, “But don’t be so frightened! We are on good terms with humans and we strive to defend the High Forces’ laws”. 

“Awesome...” 

“Yeah, but, if you are indeed Lilith, the mother of Prince Baku, then your husband has to be... the devil...” Sandy went pale, “That means, Yanluo[2]?!” 

 Lucy and Sam gasped – so Lily’s husband was none other but the horrendous Lord of the Land of Shadows?!

 [1] Baku (獏 or 貘) – Japanese supernatural beings that devour dreams and nightmares. According to legend, they were created by the spare pieces that were left over when the gods finished creating all other animals. 

[2] Yanluo Wang (閻羅) is a Chinese deity and the ruler of the underworld Diyu. The name Yan Luo is a shortened Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit term Yama Raja (閻魔羅社). He is also the judge of the underworld and passes judgment on all the dead.

Lucy Caldwell suffered a disaster in her childhood - her house was burnt, which turned fatal for her parents. She grew up in a children's house with other orphans. She could never forget the fire incident and was sure her parents were murdered, so she wished to investigate the case when she grew old enough. But as elders often say, dense forests are definitely not a place for little children to run around, for the danger lies in every corner, as Lucy soon comes to realise...
