Three black werecat orphan brothers are trying their best to find a home when they are finally adopted. Everything goes great with their new family until tragedy strikes and they are left with an unexpected guardian.

This story is about an average high school boy with an average lifestyle who likes to read novels especially fantasy ones and was transferred to another world along with his classmates from his school.

As they were transferred our protagonist, John Kaiser, was the sole student among his classmates who were left behind, leaving him all alone in their classroom.

As he was wondering what happened to the others, he remembered one of the novels he had read. It was a story of a fantasy world, where a king of a human kingdom summons heroes from another world to save their world from the demon king, a typical Isekai (Another World)  fantasy novel.

Our protagonist, John Kaiser, started to contemplate and question 'why?' why was he the only one not summoned?

And as his questions go crazy, a light emerges from the place where he was sitting.

Is this the start of our protagonist's fantasy adventure as a hero? Or will he live the same life again as an average person even in another world?

Truck-kun, goddess, reincarnation, avatar powers, Kacchan, izuku, the might, trap, my hero academia.
These word mean something. But I'm not sure what. This is my first novel published. And I have very little clue on what to do.

Our training continues five days after we started.
My muscle is aching but I still pushing myself until I master a fighting move.
"Good! Keep it up May!"
Today, Lux made me train with a various basic fighting moves where anyone can be mastered in a short amount of time.
Lux's showed me one of his special attack. He calls it "Bend Blade", a sword fighting technique which makes opponent hallucinate that they have seen a bending sword causing the opponent to get confuse in a short moment before they figure the move out.
As my training goes under Lux's education, I easily learned his special attack within a day. The "Bend Blade" doesn't require magic, but, it requires fast movement.
For now, I used the "Swift" crimson stone enchantment to perfectly perform the attack easily. Lux told me that next time, I should do his special attack without using the enchantment.
Another thing, Lux has started to upgrade his Three Word Spell into Four Word Spell. He tried to sharpen the memory of how can a thing be so hot.
In a magical word "Heat" I have said before, Lux thought that he would able to do it because he saw a glimpse of its reaction when he added it on the spell.
From "Photonic-Flash-Strike" into "Photonic-Heat-Flash-Strike".
While Lux is trying to train by himself, Elm was just sleeping upon the tree branch. He told me that he was bored for some reason.
So for motivation, I said "Elm! Why don't you try upgrading you Three Word Spell into Four Word Spell?!" I exclaimed and suggested so he wouldn't be bored.
He responded "Huh? It would take me another three years to upgrade my Three Word Spell."
After he responded, Lux made Elm to go down the tree and said "You idiot, you're a fire mage, and you know how something can be hot. Your memory about it is so sharp since you always felt the hotness in your body every time you cast any fire related spells."
With Elm's magical powers, Lux is certain that Elm will be able to master a Four Word Spell in a short amount of time.
Since I am exhausted after training, I watched these two mages trying to achieve the Four Word Spell.
Right now, I was watching Elm performing an attack while Lux is giving him an instructions so Elm would be able to perform the Four Word Spell.
"Now, cast the first word." Lux is guiding Elm.
"Okay, here we go… FIRE-"
"Then, try to imagine or visualize something that is very hot, you can use your experience every time you cast a fire spell before."
Elm closes his eyes and try to remember and visualize about something very hot.
And when he did…
"HEAT-"
Elm successfully manage to visualize the heat. And because of that, the temperature of flame becomes hotter, and I can feel it in a distance.
"Whoa… Now! Do it!"
"PRESSURED-BLAST"
With the spell has been completed, casted, and released, the flame spread entirely in the surroundings before the attack hit an object.
When the attack was being casted, the flame was very bright, the temperature is very high, and Elm was their showing his face that he is amazed of what he's doing.
When the attack hit an object which is going to be hard rock, the rock shatters in a small pieces and some of the fragments were melting. I used the crimson stone enchantment "Barrier" so it would protect me from debris, while Lux jump very high above for a purpose of safety and see how big the explosion was.
The blast also creates a larger crater than the last one they made during their battle training with Lux.
After everything that happened…
"WHOA… WHOAAAA!!! I DID IT!!!" Elm has gone hyper after he casted a Four Word Spell.
"No way… It's so powerful." I was amazed after that.
"I knew you could do it Elm! You're amazing!"
"Hehe!" Elm was pleased being complimented.
Then all of the sudden, Elm had fainted.
Lux concluded that Four Word Spell requires  a lot of mana to be released.
Now if I imagine I told them some of these words like IGNITE, MAGMA, LAVA, BURN and other fire related words, how would they use it?
"Let's leave him there for now." Lux made Elm to rest with the motivation in his face.
"You look motivated Lux." I said.
"Huh? Really… Well, I'm kind of jealous to be honest." Lux becomes honest.
He was jealous that his friend Elm is now capable of casting a Four Word Spell. This made me decide and struggle if I tell him some Light related words.
"May? What's with that face?"
"Actually, there's something I can tell you. I am not sure if this will work." I was trying to tell him a Light related word while acting that I may not be certain.
"What is it?" Lux was curious.
"Can you try this -SOLAR-"
"Solar? Wait the second…" Lux was saying this while I am thinking that I am being suspicious.
"What?!" Lux was moving his face closer to my face.
"Meaning?!" He asked what's the meaning of "SOLAR".
"Eh?" Then this is what happened after I become presumptuous. But actually Lux was very excited to know the meaning.
"Uhh… ummm it's..." Lux's face remained near to my face and I was having a hard time telling him.
"A light from the Sun!" I exclaimed.
Well, I wish I could tell him more about it but, I am scared that I might get blind.
"A light from the -SUN-?" He was curious again about the word "SUN" not knowing that I did said another unknown word.
"Huh? No… I mean… *Sigh* Guess I have no choice, I mean that one above the sky, your source of light."
"But that's impossible, I can't gather anything from that light."
"Huh?"
So he wasn't able to perform it without gathering magic? All I can think of to make it possible is to tell him the …"------" or "-------".
"You know, just forget it… I don't really know." I lied to him.
"Huh? Well, okay…"
"Can you train me again?" I asked Lux to train me with the sword.
"Oh… I see, let's do it. Now I am going to teach you another fighting move."
Well for now, we're back at training. Lux told me that we will go to the Demon Forest after another five days or until I become much stronger.
"May, can you hand over that Crimson stone?" Lux wanted me to give the crimson stone in a moment.
"Well, sure… But why?" I asked why.
"Well, just a gift for you?" He said a misunderstanding
"Eh? What?!" I was surprised.
"No… I mean, I am just going to add another enchantment. It could be useful when you need it."
Five more days then off we go!
Meanwhile…
The King Phaulius Dives, Elite Mages, and other mages and guards has successfully reached their destination.
After fighting so much monsters, several of them has severely injured. Some other mages had died in such unfortunate occurences.
They may have been able to kill all monsters, however, they have to find where is the stone hidden.
They used the search magic, but, because the power of the stone is powerful, the detection becomes useless since the surroundings is filled with magic.
Therefore, they have to use a shovel, pickaxe and other digging materials.
The King ordered that when they found the stone, they shouldn't touch it and hide it.
"We can use our magic to dig." Julius Mirahelios is suggesting to use magic to make it more efficient.
"When you does that, your magic will get absorbed by the stone before you even completely casted the spell." Fulmen Diaz is saying that it is not possible.
"Oh… You're right." Harold Argen tested and realized.
"Huh? Maybe the stone is over there!" Clair Alian thought that the stone maybe down there in that hole.
The King headed over there after the Elite Mages reported.

A kid who should have been just around ten years old tried to shove Doug and Han into the old building.Two other children came running towards them from a street ahead of them and waved wildly.  
If it weren't for the situation, one might have thought they were just chasing each other around. Han pulled out his wand from his pocket and glanced across the street.  
There didn't seem to be any visible threats, and yet he tensed.
The street was now empty, except for the three young kids in front of him. Still that didn't mean he could dismiss the idea of any danger as he tried to find any remaining mana within his body. It was like tapping into the recesses of a dried up well.  
Still, Han looked at the kid and frowned. "What's the situation?"  
"Guardsmen!" the boy whisper-shouted and threw a look at Doug. "It's the one with the spear!"
"Wait, he's finally out of the clinic?" Doug rubbed his face and threw a look at Han. If he assessed this situation, then this guy was uninvolved. It was strange for the Guardsmen to do patrols here, but maybe this guy was just lucky. "I mean it's probably safe for you and you can get escorted—"
"No, no. They're just two Guardsmen and a couple of teenagers. I think the target shifted from this guy to them, and I already saw the other gangs coming out." Another boy insisted and shook his head. "Mari and I already saw them closing in on them!"
The girl shoved her hands into tattered shorts. "It's best we keep out of it, Doug. But maybe if you're quick we can get your friend back to the Academy."
Before Doug could protest at the fact that Han wasn't his friend—Han frowned and slapped a hand over his forehead. The description of the kids matched what was in his mind word for word.  
"Well fudge it it all, I know them."
"What?"
"Unless I'm wrong, which I can be—that group are my classmates." Han scratched the back of his head. A smile crossed on his lips. "I didn't think they'd actually go out of their way to find me, er, but drama aside—I mean, it's about four weaponless Students and two Guardsmen. I haven't seen any spear or anything at all."
"They're fucked then." the girl said.
"Not if I can stop them—" Han said and then paused as the four kids gave him blank looks.
"Mister, you had to run earlier." the girl said. "If you hadn't stumbled into our place by accident then you'd have been a dead body in the street in the morning or somewhere else."  
He sighed and threw a look at the street ahead of them, straining his ears to hear if there were any fights breaking out. "I know it's stupid. But do you guys have weapons? Can I borrow them and I'll toss it to my friends."
He wasn't about to ask kids to pick up a fight with him and save Donovan and the others.  
But even just the thought of a fight between his classmates made him wary, this wasn't just large spiders or wyverns but actual people. Neither was this actually a spar where you could call it off.
"Do you think we'll just give them to you?" the first boy looked at him baffled. "They're not free."
"Their best chance is escaping—but I don't think they'll be able to do it if everyone participates in the fight." Another said.  
"Well, if Ryden tries to leave—I bet he could, but he wouldn't just abandon them."
"I know that Slug Fist has a vendetta against him. Bet it's going to be nasty if he just got out of the clinic."
"If he runs then he can call reinforcements."
"It'll be too late, by then. Especially if it's that guy, Bo he's with."
Somehow, the conversation quickly descended into some kind commentary about their survival. Han's classmates and what was going to happen. Even if he left now—what was the best he could do? He needed to get his hands on a mana potion—
Doug shoved a knife towards Han, nearly stabbing him in the face. "Here's mine. Use it, since I don't think you can use that wand unless you're poking someone in the eye with it. Actually, maybe we should go." the boy glanced at his friends.
"What? Boss—we're going to get involved in that? No way!"
"Then I'll go and help," Doug said. "At least I'll earn levels while fighting tougher enemies."
"I know they said that, but they're really higher level—"
He cut off the squabble and picked up the knife from the boy. He managed a grin. "Hey hey, I appreciate the knife but I can't ask that." Han pocketed the weapon, already walking forward and looked back at them, "I mean if any of you got a mana potion—I'd appreciate it. But other than that, thanks for saving me."
Without waiting for another word, he began to run—and then dodged another knife that came behind him.
"You can use that too!" Another boy shouted. "It's rusted so it'll hurt more!"
Han swiped it up and shouted a quick thanks, and then he ran off.

.
Once the young man disappeared into the street, the four kids shared a silent look together. It seemed like their job was finally over, which hadn't been that hard. For the last half hour, they remained as a lookout and ensured that Han hadn't been tracked to their place. The group of kids still relied on the previous horror of their mentors, but now, they were free to do as they pleased.
"He's stupid." one of the boys decided loudly. A grin cracked up on his lips. "I like that. Too bad he's going to die though."
"Argh, the exit is just a couple streets down in the opposite direction—and I don't think anybody else is watching it anymore." the girl groaned and shook her head. "I'm going in though." Without another word, she slid back to the apartment.
Doug crossed his arms. "Well, it's not like he'd abandon his classmates. I mean they're probably just like us who watch each other's backs."  
"Heh, Hailey and I did leave you back then though."
Doug half-glared at the boy. "Yeah, I didn't forget that, Trav."
Max shrugged and looked back. "They're supposed to be from the Academy—do you think they're actually any good?"
"Nah, combat experience? They're good as ants in the street."
"You think we could watch though?"
"Watch? Seriously? Are you out of your mind!"
"If we're fast, we can probably loot some bodies."
"Not a great idea."

They were surrounded, trapped.
Boaz was the only one who had a weapon—well, someone snatched it from his hand.
"I can use this better than you!" Ryden said and pointed the sword at the largest guy that approached them. It was an extremely huge guy—and his nickname really didn't fit him. "Hey, Hey, Slug Face, nice to see ya. Did ya miss me?"
The guy didn't move like a slug, but rather slugged very hard.
"Heard you just got out of the clinic. What you doing in our territory?" another Thug swaggered. "Asking for a beating, huh!"
Slug Face—er, Slug Fist threw a nasty look at the Thug who clamped his mouth shut. One of his friends elbowed the random thug, before Slug Fist addressed Ryden again. "It seems like you're doing a little tour around this place—what is this, did you give up your post as a Guardsman?"
"Hah, nah nah. We're just using this as a shortcut—you didn't happen to see one of my kids though?" Ryden cocked a grin.  
Boaz thought it was idiotic that his friend was spilling the beans… and yet, his Diplomat Skills were useless in this hour. Unless he could just get a lighter beating? He threw some looks at the young men and the sole woman with them and gritted his teeth.  
He and Ryden could attempt to make a break for it, but not without risking them.
"I think it's best that you don't touch a single stray hair of any of us if you know what's good for you." the Diplomat said—more on threatening, than actually being a good Diplomat if he was to be honest.
"And why's that, Joe?"
Boaz's expression flattened at the name.
"Oi—he's name is Bo! And I'm the only one who calls him that." Ryden swung the sword around like a kid. He did a few thrusting stabs in the air—which wasn't effective for a sword, unlike a spear.
Boaz threw him a look.
Ryden sighed and said, "But yeah, he's right—we're not here to fight. It's actually best if you let us through."
It took a great amount of forcing for Ryden to actually say it.  
Even if he was out of duty for a couple of weeks now, it didn't mean he'd actually let it pass when there were so many criminal folks around them. Somehow, if he'd let them go now—it meant that they'd hide even better next time.  
This was a chance for a proper arrest if he actually had his weapons with him. If being a quite important word. And if he had a lot more Guards with him.
"Hah! Backing out from a fight, huh? What's so special about these kids—think they'll fetch a good price?"

Chapter 23

LEWIS' VILLA

"So, does your Grandpa know you're bringing your friend over?" Kate Lewis asked. They were eating dinner. Andy visited home.

"Yeah, he's okay with it."

"I'm surprised you're letting someone in…I mean, into your 'personal' life." Mr. Lewis quoted the word personal.

"Nah, I'm just comfortable with her." 

"Well, I'm surprised too," Kevin joined in. "I only knew Donna as your friend."

Andy shrugged. "I have a lot of friends. I'm even friends with everyone in school."

Kate Lewis held her daughter's hand. "Dear, acquaintances and friends are two different matters." 

Andy smiled. She can't argue with that.

"We're just glad to know you've got another friend you can lean on other than Donna." Mr. Lewis said while wiping his mouth. He has those eyes who stared at her daughter showing how genuinely he mean every word.

Erika smiled. "Thanks Dad."

"Hey, you don't really have to buy all that." Andy pointed to the shopping bags Erika was carrying.

Erika invited Andy to go shopping with her. Well, she said to buy some necessities for tomorrow's trip but it seems not just necessities to Andy. She's buying a lot.

"Why? I think I need them."

Andy sighed. "Erika," 

'Don't call me that. Hearing your voice call my name sends chills down my spine. '  Erika complained in her thoughts.

"We are going to another city, a CITY not some remote area." Andy stressed out the word CITY. 

"We can easily buy that." She added while pointing again to the bags only to caught Erika rolling her eyes. 

They ate dinner before calling it a day dropping Andy to her apartment. 

While unbuckling the seatbelt, Andy remembered something. 

"Right, we're using my car tomorrow so give me your address."

Erika lifted up her brow. "I didn't see you ride one." 

"Well, my apartment is just a walking distance from school so I don't see the need to use it."

Erika nodded. "Can I just take a cab and meet you here?"

Andy's brow met. "Is it too much for me to know where you live?"

Erika was taken aback. Andy sounded hurt. 

"No, I mean I'll…"

Andy cut her off. "It's okay. See you tomorrow then," and got out of the car. 

Erika rested her head on the steering wheel for a while before driving home.

Be brave enough to take off the mask you’ve been wearing and be who you are underneath. I think in life, happiness comes from deciding to follow your heart over your fears.

Death, everyone knows that word but who knows what it really means?
the death is simple word that spreads fear to some people but loved and sought by others, suicidal people want to be her friend, while others take it as the enemy who really knows who is seeking death? I mean, is it the only way to forget all the worries?
Death has become my best friend, my passion, my goal in my poor life, that's not my fault, they taught me that it's the only way to escape , this is the single word that I heard the most so I just wanted to try , it's not my fault that's what the voices in my head said to me , this is the fault of the monsters and beasts hiding where I live and who are following me , If only I could touch a wing or a feather from the wing of this angelic devil.
Some describe it as a darkness that no one can illuminate, as for people like me; they describe it as a bright flame that no one can extinguish in the darkness of their lives.
Another night sitting in my roof, I felt his back, but it didn't bother me, he kept silent, He understood that I did not want to speak, that this calm was good for me and for him too but there was a question that still crossed my mind

Black, is what I've seen right now. I tried to calm down and remember what happened earlier. Still can't believe what happened just now. The 'monster' that suddenly attack me, unleash something, darkness spheres and direct it toward me and when I activated one of my abilities—[Avesta]; I suddenly heard something in my head. A sentence, sounds like activation word. It came out natural from my mouth, as if I already said it once… as if I'm already used, though… from the fact, this is my first time to use that.

From the moment I've use it. I can hear that strange voice again.

It laughed. My body currently in bad condition, I'm fainted the moment after unleashing that kind of attack. This is… my first fight and I could hear three voices laughing at the same time. But, one of it spoke to me.

"Well done, human. Already activate it, my power—a power that can surpass another so easily and could even rival gods! —yet it's used by one of the biggest weakness. Quite ironic, isn't it? My power—my [Gift], "Another Cosmology" or also known as "Pseudo Star Map Creation". Well done, human."

I tried to speak but my mouth can't let out what I want to say. It's not like I'm stunned, petrified, or anything but—as if I couldn't utter to 'it'. It's not coming out but then, instead of just voice… I could see something. A blurry white figure before me, it seems not human and… have three heads.

Another voice could be heard.

"Not yet. You're still weak. Far from what I've used to. You must seek power, achieve the peak and grasp it yourself. After you become stronger than now, I'll welcome you again… with proper introducing."

But… can you at least give me a glimpse of this ability?! This… [Avesta] ability? Because God seems not give me the details.

"Hmph. Very well. My power, my "Another Cosmology" allows the user to add enemies' original power with his own power "Another Cosmology" and create the mirror opposite Gift that neutralizes everything, your chance of victory is will never below 50%, no matter what kind of situation, what kind of enemy, also how many they are—but… as long as your opponents are non-human."

"Another Cosmology"? Gift? What the hell… is that?

I swear that I could hear he/she/it snorted.

"Of course it is, human. You should be grateful with this and it's a shame your body couldn't handle its full power. You've to train your body more, gain better or perfect control of my ability. Although your body is weak, you have three assets."

Three assets? What is that?

"First, you have three powerful abilities inside your body and the second is, somehow, you have high magical power. The third is you seem posses quick learning when coming into fighting, from what I've seen when you doing that so-called martial arts training with that woman."

Isn't… that awesome?! But how… I mean, when I come to his world, God only gives me those abilities but… how come I got two more?

"You should grateful, human. This way, you can become stronger fast and use my power to the full potential."

Azi… you're quite a nice person, huh.

He just snorts.

"This is for my own benefit. Doing this will entertain me up."

From what he said, maybe he talking about something like Forbidden Balor View or Aeon Balor and Nereid Kyrie but I dunno about others Sacred Gear because I'm not following the latest volume of the light novel. Too much real-life problem to face for me every day.

This makes me confused, because I felt something strange from his tone.

He laughs! I swear that I can imagine that he wears a sly smile and mocking laugh when saying that, this of course makes me irritated and confused, more than that! What's the meaning of that word? What did he mean about that?

C-Could it be… something dangerous will await me?! Oh no, please don't! I don't wanna encounter it for now, because I just finished my first fight to that strange monster and awaken my [Avesta] ability! But well… what could I do, anyway? Nothing!

As if I give up about it because it seems I can't escape when I wake up and open my eyes, this so-called mindscape of mine suddenly disappears. Small lights suddenly wash away this blackness, this darkness that surrounds me right now and changes it entirely, as if I've been taken out from this place.

This is the end, huh. Maybe when the time comes, I can ask someone to teach me about entering mindscape as I please. Though, why it's pitch black and not have any image? Maybe like… some beautiful and cool scenery? Something like that? But well… this my mindscape, so it's up to me to customize all of it.

The small lights increased. The darkness is suddenly disappearing and I could feel it. My conscious is back, I could move my fingers, it's twitching and… I felt something soft below my head. It's has a nice feeling and makes me don't wanna let it go. But as much I want to feel that, my eyes slowly open and I could hear a voice—it's very familiar.

My body is trembling, my eyes widened when I see something above me. That face, I couldn't forget it. And words came out, a single sentence.

"Oh. You are awake, Andrean."

Ophis! I love her very much! Rias? Akeno? Grayfia? Venelana? Yasaka? I don't care about that! Shoo, get away from me, you boring character! I don't need you to chase me with that harem bullshit!

God, why you put me in this miseries?! What I have done to you to get this treatment! But, anyway, I will get perfect ending to win Ophis heart in her route!

Troy dropped his towel to the cement, shaking his head and wanting to laugh. Cam had cursed. And fought back against her family's constant nagging. Check and check. Now they were getting somewhere.
He glanced at Tim, standing near the grill with a pan of uncooked steak, wearing a man apron and looking shell-shocked. Troy picked up his cell and sat in the chair. "I like my steak medium-rare, Tim. And Camryn likes hers well-done."
"Troy Lansky," her mother said. "Why are you grinning?"
"Hey, just because Cam got mad and left doesn't mean you can harass me in her wake."
Heather scanned the other shocked faces. "I thought she was happy for us. I thought she wanted to be my maid of honor. Why is she so mad?"
Troy sighed. The family still didn't get it. "She is happy for you. She just doesn't understand why your wedding has become about her."
"I've never heard her swear before," Anna said. "It was like The Twilight Zone. I'm going to have nightmares."
Troy grinned, but Mom wasn't done. "I don't see why asking her to put on sunscreen upset her. She could get skin cancer."
Bernice, ever quiet until now, dropped her hand from her chest. "Perhaps asking her instead of telling her would be better received. If she had known you were worried about skin cancer and not what she looked like in her dress, maybe she wouldn't have gotten angry."
Well said, Bernice. She deserved a huge pat on the back for that one. Plus, it shut up Cam's mom. Not an easy task.
Troy tossed Dad the bottle of sunscreen as his bald head was turning pink. Dad stared at it before saying, "What was this fat business?"
Troy wanted to know the answer to that, too. Camryn had a beautiful body. After last night, he could attest to that firsthand. Hell, he'd never forget that body as long as he lived. All curves and lean muscle. She wasn't an anorexic model, but she was far from fat. She was normal, healthy-
He flashed back to their meals and couldn't remember her finishing a plate of food. She'd eaten, but not as much as normal. Or was that normal for her? He'd never paid attention. Even on their Paris day, she'd only consumed one crepe, one croissant.
At the sound of voices, Troy looked up. Apparently over Cam's outburst, the family moved on to relaying to Tim how they wanted their steaks cooked, and arguing whether Baba could eat steak with dentures.
Troy touched his cell screen to pull up some music and tune them out when he saw he had a saved text. Wondering why Cam saved a spam note, he opened it.
Shit. Lindsay. He'd dated her two years ago for all of a week. Every once in a blue moon she'd booty text him when she was lonely or desperate. As always before, he sent her a message to decline.
Out of town. Also happily with someone else now. Best to you.
Cam had seen this. He wondered how she felt about another woman, in the picture or not. After last night, he couldn't tell what she wanted. He thought she'd wanted him like he wanted her, disastrous as that may be.
She'd had no reaction as far as he could tell when she'd opened the text.
Either way, he'd warned her. They were going to talk. He would get some of his answers tonight.

They were all cowards, the lot of them. They'd sent Emily to her bedroom to fetch her for dinner. Only her family would use an innocent three-year-old as a buffer.
So, there they were, sitting around the tables outside, eating dinner in silence. It was the craziest, most wonderful thing Cam had ever experienced. Silence from her family. Who knew? Troy had riled her to the point she'd lost it, defending herself, as he'd called it, and cursing. It wasn't something she planned on doing often, if ever again, but perhaps there was some merit to this list of his. Anything that could shut up the Covics couldn't be all bad.
What she'd really like to know was what Troy's motives were.
Camryn cut another bite of her perfectly cooked, well-done steak and slid it into her mouth.
"What's fucking mean?" Emily asked.
Baba spit out the baked potato she'd been chewing. Heather pounded her on the back as she coughed. Mom and Dad exchanged horrified looks. Bernice's jaw dropped to the picnic table. And Troy-laughed.
"Emily Covic," Fisher chastised, setting down his corn on the cob. "We do not use that language!"
Emily glanced around the table. "But Auntie Cam did! I want to know what it means."
"Well," Anna said calmly, "when you get older, I'll explain it."
"But I'm older than I was this morning!"
"Still not old enough," Tetaka Myrtle mumbled under her breath.
"I am, too. I'm free years old," Emily argued, not helping her cause. "I'm not a baby."
"You'll always be our baby," Mom said, not helping the situation in the least.
Emily crossed her arms over her chest, huffing like Puff the Magic Dragon on steroids. "It's not fair."
Fisher nodded. "Life's not fair. And we're done talking about this. Eat your dinner."
"I don't want to. I want to know what--"
"Eh hem," Camryn interrupted, causing the collective whole to look at her. If it was one thing she'd learned from her niece, kids never forgot. They had a one-track mind. Emily would not let this go until she got an answer, no matter what the answer may be.
She finished chewing. "Fucking is a noun formed from a verb by adding the -甶ng' suffix after it. A suffix of nouns formed from verbs expresses the action of the verb or its result, product, and material. And your dad is right. It's a naughty word. So, I can trust you'll never say it again. Just like shit, hell, and damn."
Baba's silverware clattered to her plate. The rest of the family stared at Camryn in stunned silence, forks suspended in midair. They kind of resembled a paused movie. It was quite entertaining, actually.
Camryn took another bite of her meat and chewed. "The steak is very good, Tim."
"Um, thank you."
Emily looked at Fisher. "Why didn't you just say that?"
Justin laughed. "I'm not sure your dad even knows what Auntie Cam just said. I know I don't."
Cam looked at Troy out of the corner of her eye. He put a hand to his chest. "Camryn, that was the sexiest thing I've ever witnessed."
She thought he was joking until she fully looked at him. His dark eyes were three times the size of normal and his mouth hung agape. Huh. He was as insane as the rest of them.
Yjaka Mitch grimaced. "Troy, come on--"
"No, seriously," he insisted. "The sexiest."
"It was kinda sexy," Justin mumbled, which received an honorary slap from Heather. "What? It was."
"What's sexist mean?"
Fisher rubbed his forehead. "Great, Troy. Thanks a lot."
"Not sexist," Heather corrected Emily, "sexiest."
"Heather!" Fisher shouted.
Emily slammed her hands on the table. "Well, what does it mean?"
They all turned their heads to Camryn. 
"Cam, please tell her," Troy pleaded. "I can't wait to hear this one."
"Me either," Justin agreed, receiving yet another slap from Heather.
"We don't hit people, Auntie Heather! Use your words." Emily looked at Camryn again. "Tell me."
They'd always made fun of her in the past for having an intellectual brain. For being a plethora for useless knowledge. Now they were interested?
"Uh," she mumbled. "Sexy is defined as generally appealing and attractive. By adding the suffix -甧st,' it implies the most appealing or attractive of all."
Troy nodded. "Exactly."
"Is it a naughty word?" Emily asked.
Fisher pointed at Camryn with raised brows. "You be careful how you answer that, dear sister."
Camryn rolled her eyes. "No, Emily. It's not a naughty word, but it is a very adult word, so you should only use it when you're much older and in the correct context."
Anna shook her head. "I'm so calling you when it's time to discuss the birds and bees."
"Why would you call Auntie Cam about birds and bees?"
"She means puberty, sweetie," Kuma Viola supplied.
"Damn it!" Fisher howled, causing Troy and Justin to laugh like drunk hyenas. "Would you all shut up? You're going to get her kicked out of preschool if she repeats this."
Emily stoically looked at her father, seeming much older than her years. "Auntie Cam said damn is a bad word. So, don't say damn anymore. Right, Auntie Cam?"
Cam smiled. "Right, honey. Damn is a damn bad word. No more damning. Now, you should eat your damn dinner that Tim spent a damn hour grilling before it gets damn cold."
Fisher threw his head back and stared at the darkening sky as if praying to a higher power. Troy and Justin all but fell off their seats laughing. Justin was turning the same ugly shade of fuchsia as the shirt Heather had bought her. Even Bernice chuckled behind her napkin.
Emily and Camryn commenced to eating while everyone but Fisher giggled into hysteria. Eventually, they calmed down and finished their meal as the waning light descended behind the mountains.
