Chapter one:
Can you change the station? Jean asked her parents. When the song's over, honey. Her mom tells her. You said the same thing two songs ago. Jean sulks. Her father chuckles. You know this is a classic right? He asked.
Okay. How about I make you a promise? Jean's mother asked as she nodded her head. When you're old enough to drive, you can listen to whatever music you want. Is that a deal? She asked. Jean thought it seemed fair enough, so she nodded.
Suddenly the radio changed to another station without any one touching it. John. Jean's mother says, looking at her father. It wasn't me. He says. Jean? Was that you? She asked, and Jean shakes her head no. She adjusts the radio so that it went back to the same station it was on. However, the radio changes again.
Jean? What are you doing? She asked her, confused. I don't know, Jean admits looking into the mirror. The radio changes again.
Shut it, Jean whispered to herself. Thinking that her parents couldn't hear her. Everything seemed to have increased in the volume, and Jean couldn't bear it. Her parents turned around and looked at her, fear in their eyes.
Time seemed to slow down for the next few seconds. Shut it, Jean whispered softly. Shut it! She repeated, now yelling. Something happened, and no one was controlling the car. Her father reached for the wheel in a hurry as the car banged into a truck, the impact causing the car to flip a few times.
The glass from the windows and windshield stayed away from Jean. It seemed like an unseen force was protecting her from the shards of glass. The car landed on the road upside down. Jean came out with absolutely no injuries. She wasn't so sure about her parents as the next thing she knew her world turned black.
Jean was turning conscious again, but she couldn't seem to open her eyes. However, she could hear people talking to each other, but her brain couldn't comprehend what they were saying.
Next thing she knew, Jean was sitting in a room by herself. A man in a wheelchair enters, and he was right beside her. Hello. He greets. Where are my parents? Jean said, getting straight to the point. My name is Charles Xavier. He says, introducing himself without answering Jean's question.
They're dead. Am I right to say that? Jean asked, he seemed shocked. Yes, they are. He admits. And I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that. He said. So what's happening to me now? Jean asked, curious.
That's why I'm here actually. He says as Jean looks at him. See, I have a school actually. That is for young people like you. He says. Special. He says,, describing Jean.
Special is just a less rude word- He cuts Jean off. For weird or crazy? Yep. Sometimes it is. Or sometimes, that word can be used to describe people who are significant, amazing or just really cool. He replied. He smiles before continuing, You've got gifts Jean. He says.
You know what? He asked. Look, just take this pen. He says, taking out a small black pen from his pocket. Just take it. It's a gift. He tells Jean as he holds the pen out for a confused Jean to take. Jean takes it, and he starts speaking again. Now you could choose to draw a really nice picture with that, or you could choose to poke someone's eye out. He said as Jean's nose scrunched up at the thought of her doing something like that. But either way, it's a pen. It's a gift. But what you choose to do with your gift is entirely up to you. But if you want to use it to do good stuff, I can help you. He says.
That is in Jean's mind and heart made it's choice, and she nods her head slowly.
They got into the car. When they got out, there was a gigantic castle- like building right in front of them. What do you think? He asked Jean. I can't stay here, Jean replied. Okay. Why not? He asked. It's too nice. And I have a habit of breaking nice things. Jean tells him. If you break something, anything, I can fix it. He says. Not everything. Jean replied.
I can help you. So that you'll never have to break things ever again. He says. You think you can fix me? Jean asked. No, because you are not broken. He tells Jean. Jean can feel herself smile a bit at his words.
